5 out of 5 stars AT LAST THE PERFECT SOUNDTRACK.......2007-07-06

I've waited a quarter century, since the release of the film, for a faithful reproduction of Boorman's movie soundtrack. The perfect blend of (Wagner's) classical pieces with more modern work is brought out so well in modern CD format you could almost close your eyes & imagination you're back in one of Manhattan's old movie palaces.

5 out of 5 stars EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

5 out of 5 stars "Epics featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra ~ 60 years of film scores".......2005-09-07

When I think of the "Golden Age of Hollywood", many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades right and up to the present 2005.

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classics that even the youngsters today recognize...sweeping scores that capture the drama, mystery, adventure, action and romance...one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this...many nominated and winners by the Academy for Best Original Score...

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Advanced Big Band Jazz That Swings.......2006-09-11

Steve Wiest is an alumnus of North Texas State and the Maynard Ferguson Band. Currently he is a highly respected jazz educator. In addition, he is a very talented jazz composer/ arranger and a trombonist with monster chops. His work with Maynard Ferguson 25 plus years ago was impressive enough, but on Exclaibur he has definitely taken his talent to a higher level.

In August 2005 Wiest assembled a talented band of midwestern jazz musicians in a Chicago studio to record eight of his charts (five originals and three standards). On every one of the charts Wiest achieves a hard to find balance between the advanced big band writing of Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider and Bob Florence, and the more straightahead approach represented by Thad Jones, Count Basie and Bill Holman. (Brookmeyer and Jones seem to be Wiest's most obvious influences). It is this balance within each chart which makes the music on Excalibur so interesting. In addition, the inclusion of the standards (Cheek to Cheek is especially remarkable) gives the listener a reference point to hold on to. The attentive and open-minded listener will find much to enjoy on every chart, and for this listener, The Once and Future Groove, the title piece, and The Silver Spin are most striking. (The latter is a beautiful ballad written by Wiest for his wife). All the music swings, but not always lightly and politely and often in a rather unexpected way.

The band is tight ensemble, with especially strong work from lead trumpeter Mike Williams, and impressive solos from trumpeter Mike Plog, tenorist Ed Peterson, baritonist Glenn Kostur, and altoist Tim Ishii. The rhythm section spearheaded by drummer Bob Rummage is really on its toes in these sometimes tricky charts. But the main soloist here is Wiest, who plays muscular solos on trombone with a full sound and an awesome range (check out On Green Dolphin Street).

Excalibur is one of the most intriguing recordings I've heard in 2006 and continues to unfold with repeated hearings. This beautifully recorded 68 minute CD is a wonderful showcase for Steve Wiest's extensive gifts and is highly recommended to all who enjoy modern big band jazz. Trombonists will definitely want to check CD out, as well.

This is defenitly NOT the sound track to the movie. Good music if you want something playing in the back ground. Very mellow. There is some variation between songs, but if your not paying attention, you won't notice. Also, purchase it thru one of the other sellers and save yourself some money. Recording is very good and plays well. Playing time is around 36 minutes

5 out of 5 stars Power-metal to shatter your eardrums!.......2005-08-23

I'm gonna get right to the point here.....if you've never experienced power-metal before, or might have heard some power-metal bands & thought "I guess this stuff is OK," let me tell you something... Grave Digger is 1 of the VERY FEW rare exceptions! This was the 2nd Grave Digger CD I purchased & it completely blew me away!!! In fact, out of all of the European power-metal bands I listen to (Hammerfall, Metalium, Brainstorm, Afterworld, etc.) Grave Digger is at the top of the list for me next to Brainstorm! These guys are just all out heavy from the beginning w/ no signs of letting up on this masterpiece!! If you want further proof---also listen to their albums 'Rheingold,' 'The Grave Digger,' & 'The Last Supper.' Metal at it's finest!!

    5 out of 5 stars Genius... Genius I say.......2003-06-01

I just recently got into this band. Grave Digger has always been one of those band's I'd heard of, but never really heard. Now I'm kicking myself for not listening to them sooner. This is power metal, but not your typical style. The vocalist definetly breaks the predictable mold and comes across with something very different. Gruff, deep, and powerful, I think he's what really makes the band. Of course the nasty, ultra-heavy distortion doesn't hurt matters and makes the songs very catchy and headbangable. If you like heavy, dark power acts like Nevermore or Eidolon this is an absolute must. Also worth noting is the entirely different take from the norm on the 'big chorus'. Grave Digger manages to use this with maximum effect and without the cheese factor of bands like Blind Guardian. The choruses tend to be deep and menacing with an evil chant quality to them. Don't waste anymore time. Buy this NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Epic Metal is the Best!.......2001-07-29

I love this CD, the awsome music, with the hard vocals gives a great contrast. Last time I saw anything like this Idea was with Metallicas S&M album, I love that style because it shows my two personalities.

One is sensitive, caring, (Basicly a Gentalman who lives his life by the code of the knight)

The other is a troubled young man, mad at everyone and everything for what theve done to my life.

Yeah I know im straying off topic, but I love the music, it is really my kind of music, give it a try, I think you'll love it.

4 out of 5 stars CAN THEY FIND ANOTHER SINGER ???.......2001-07-19

IT's a mystery how Boltendahl can compose so great and sing so bad !!! This CD its very good, a brave try by Grave Digger inr ecording a conceptual album, following almost exclusively the movie "EXCALIBUR". The result was terrific, an atuthentic power metal that is not boring. ( a rare fact ). Congratulations, German boys !

3 out of 5 stars Good music, bad vocals.......2000-12-28

Every knows this is Arthurian concept album. Overdone concept, but I personally interested in the theme, so a plus for the album.

Music is good. Various "nonmetal" instruments make their appearance here; nicely situated around the non-nonsense heavy metal playing which enhance the concept of the album. Good segues and riffs. A plus for the album.

... but the vocals... ruff and gruff, almost death metal-like without the lyrics and IMHO, they don't fit the album. In fact they detract from it. I personally like good melodic vocalists( B. Dickinson, Klaus Meine etc) so perhaps I am missing something here. Were they going for something? (This is the first Grave Digger album I have listened to).

With enough spins, I will adjust to the vocals, but until then, 3 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Tom Fogerty leaves CCR and Declares Independence.......2005-12-25

This European release couples two LPs issued on the Fantasy label, Tom Fogerty's 1972 self-titled release, with the 1973 follow-up, entitled "Excalibur".
In 1971, Creedence Clearwater Revival was one of the hottest groups around. They'd charted many top 10's, moved thousands of units, and had toured the world over. Many hailed them as the American response to the Beatles. Then, early that year, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty left, frustrated by the lack of allowed involvement in the affairs of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
The fact that Tom was on his way out was saddeningly obvious on their "Pendulum" album. Keyboards and saxes (courtesy of younger brother John) dominated and rhythm guitar, when it did appear, was given a backseat.
In 1971, a single entitled "Goodbye Media Man" appeared. It was the first solo recording out of CCR's membership. It's date, "17th of June, 1971" proudly displayed on the label, perhaps signifying a "declaration of independence" of Tom Fogerty from his little brother's dominance. "Media Man" creeped up to a disappointing #103 on the Billboard charts, but, hey, doesn't everyone work their way up?
Later that year, free from CCR, Tom Fogerty began work on his first solo LP. Immediately after departing Creedence, Tom began gigging with Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, and not surprisingly, Saunders, and gig-mates Bill Vitt and John Kahn, made up the backing band on this album. Tom handled all guitars, and, as such, no strong leads are present. But, that's a good thing. The songs here are lilting and melodic.
Opening this first LP from Tom is "The Legend of Alcatraz", a nice and melodic tune that might not have been a single, but is definitly a proper opener for this record. "Lady of Fatima" is a nicely playing jam between the musicians, and I find it to be a high-water mark on the album if you don't think so much of its crud lyrics. "Beauty Is Under The Skin" screams R&B single while "Wandering" is perhaps a throwback to the psych lyrics of the 60's, and "My Pretty Baby" is an homage to 50's vocal groups with Tom singing all the vocals, ala multitrack (think "Workin' On a Buildin'" by brother John) sparsely accompanied by Russ Gary's acoustic guitar. "Train To Nowhere" is a pleasant, loping number that is the longest song on the album, with nicely metered playing by Saunders and a fine vocal by Tom. "Everyman" is a country-style ballad with rollicking piano playing from Saunders and Tom gives a harmonica solo. This track sounds like it was cut by a bunch of guys who were having fun, and its my favorite on the album. "The Me Song" finds Tom addressing, perhaps, the things forced upon him that he doesn't want from superstardom, and "Cast The First Stone" (the album's single, by the way) seems to be Tom taking a jibe at John, with some percussional work from Billy Mundi. Things come to a close (with a beautiful closer!) with "Here Stands The Clown". A brief track, to be sure, but the beauty of how Tom works it...
This would be Tom's best selling album. It peaked at a meager #180 and would mark the last album chart appearance. The album produced no charting singles.
"Excalibur", Tom's second album, was issued in 1973. It would be an understatement to say that Tom's style had changed by this point. Jerry Garcia augmented the group which played on the first album. This would be one of the last albums to feature Garcia's pedal steel work, for those collector's out there...
"Forty Years" opens the album. A long, lost and forgotten piece of country-rock, here's a gem waiting to be discovered again. Garcia supplements the tune with his pedal steel guitar playing. Merl Saunders provides fitting piano. This song is worth, on its own, tracking down the LP. "Black Jack Jenny" is a return to Creedence's up-tempo formula, but with some rather uninspired playing from Garcia and lyrics that just don't mesh. "Rocky Road Blues" is a cover of a Bill Monroe bluegrass number, but Tom turns it into a repetitive tune, much in the style of his own that you wouldn't know a legend wrote it or that a good musician was playing it. Fogerty does sing it very decently but once again Garcia just isn't using any imagination. "Faces, Places, People" is one of the high-points of "Excalibur" and a dark one at that. Garcia hits his psych stride as Tom vocalizes some pain-wrentched lyrics. What he's singing of, I don't know, but obviously, it means something to him. "Get Funky" seems a random throwaway and "Sick and Tired" is a cover that Garcia, Saunders and Fogerty had been doing live. "Sign of the Devil" (incorrectly listed as "Sign For The Devil") is snooze-ville and "Straight and Narrow" goes on for too long and goes absolutely nowhere. "Next In Line" is a loping, country song, and makes me wonder if Tom ever considered tackling that genre. "(Hold On) Annie Mae" is a generic, but energetic blues number with prominent keys from Saunders, but the musicianship can't hide the banal lyrics (at one point he sings 'she didn't leave nothin'/No traces behind/Didn't leave numbers/For me to be find' - no, no typo). This one wound up on the "best of" CD!
"Excalibur" went nowhere, and was the start of chart no-shows. It would also be the last to feature Garcia, Saunders, Vitt and Kahn. They never figured in Fogerty's career again.
This CD includes "Goodbye Media Man" in its unedited, unsplit form. If you only have "part 1" of the single, you're OK, unless you want to hear Tom scream 'stop flashin' pictures of the people/stop flashin' pictures of the power' ad nauseum for two extra minutes...
This CD is pricey, and quality doesn't compensate. Someone was careless with the cheapo, PC-based noise reduction functions. "Tom Fogerty" is fine, not really a problem, but "Excalibur" takes a beating bad. The NR totally kills the treble and makes it even muddier, and removes all traces of reverb. A couple of tracks show up in their pure, unscathed hissy quality, and I would have preferred all of the tracks to be that way instead of being too sterile.
Liner notes? A measly (and incorrect) discography and whoever pressed these felt the urge to credit Tom's late-70's band Ruby as the backing musicians... Some pressings do correct the error, to a degree...
Artwork? Front covers, only. What you see on here is all you get... All of the Tom Fogerty reissues from ZYX suffer the same fate. Repetitive packaging.
Buy it for the music, nothing else...

4 out of 5 stars Not a movie soundtrack, but an excellent New Age CD.......2003-07-28

Medwyn Goodall has released over 70 CDs which express his love of nature and many ancient cultures and legends. This CD is a soft, laid-back collection of songs which is one of many Goodall has done based on the Arthurian legends. All of the music on this CD was composed, arranged, produced, performed, recorded and mixed by Mr. Goodall. He uses harps, guitars, mandolins, woodwinds, horns, strings, panpipes, flutes, percussion, and synths along with sounds of nature to produce nine tracks of relaxing music that really capture the mystery of the King Arthur legend. He has done many other CDs that are more upbeat than this, but if you are looking for an hour of peaceful reminders of the magic of medieval England and Camelot, try this CD.

1 out of 5 stars 'Excalibur' by John Boorman this is not!.......2002-10-12

The song's in John Boorman's 'Excalibur' were written by Carl Orff (German composer)'Carmina Burana- O Fortuna' and Richard Wagner(German composer)Act III,Scene 2:'Siegfried's Funeral March'(Twilight of the Gods-The Ring Cycle). I heard somebody purchased this album expecting to hear these songs and did not get what they wanted,so I'm setting the record straight. If you want the 2 songs from the (1981) motion picture 'Excalibur' by John Boorman, these two German composer's 'Carl Orff' and 'Richard Wagner'wrote the two popular songs:(1)Carmina Burana-O Fortuna (by Orff),(2)Siegfried's Funeral March (by Wagner). You can purchase these two albums sole separatly at bargain basement prices of $5 dollars each an album. Amazon.com lets you hear portions of 'O Fortuna'(by Carl Orff)and then you decide on where you want to spend your money? I'm sure the album pictured above is great, but has no association with the motion picture. I just wanted to save you from some disappointment and heartbreak.
