Is there such a thing as rock anymore? It's alternative, or it's pop, or it's metal, or it's industrial, or it's techno. Or, it's Pitchshifter, who are all of the above... and then some. The influence of old-school punk like the Dead Kennedys is obvious, especially on songs like "As Seen on TV" ("When sport utility vehicles are no longer enough, you need the Terminator!"), but Pitchshifter have accomplished the difficult trick of melding several genres into a distinct sound. Perfectly at home in goth dance clubs and on the Ozzfest tour, they sprawl into head-spinning electronica experiments or straight-ahead riffage ("Stronger"'s guitar line sounds like it was written by Rob Zombie), and they're never boring. What more could any punk/metal/rivet-head ask for? --Genevieve Williams

    Album Description

The most hated musician on earth, mr.deviant, unleashes his debut CD "Techno Obsession", 11 tracks of diverse electronica instrumentals. "Techno Obsession" covers many styles in the electronica genre, including: big beat, down-tempo (or chillin'), hard house, electro-funk and even hard rock inspired techno. Hot spots include: "Sex in Public", "Cherry Strut", "Techno Obsession" and "Surrounded by Evil". "Techno Obsession" leans toward the darkside of electronica, so don't expect to find any happy dance anthems here.

4 out of 5 stars Import Ant Ambi Ant.......2007-07-31

Too bad it's a lizard, and not an ant, featured on the album artwork, otherwise my stupid pun might make some sense. Anyway, I didn't realize I was getting the import version, but that's what I got, so I'm here to tell you that while there are some pretty good remixes here, the collection has its dull spots too, notably the 11-min.-plus dud "Runaway" on Disc 1. That's not a track to chill too, it just kills the disc dead, IMHO, even with The Primal Scream, Robbie Williams and Art of Noise fun mixes.

Disc 2 is much more consistent, building to the excellent Damage Manual mix, followed by a properly-handled cool-down "Morocco Mole" from Yasuaki Shimizu, and capped off by a crazy/funny found/"enhanced"(?) novelty number, The Reefer Song.

The whole 2-disc package is well worth it at the current stated price (under $15).

5 out of 5 stars A few differences between the regular and import versions.......2006-05-29

Since pretty much everyone who has reviewed this has reviewed the US version, I thought I'd point out the differences between that and the UK import (and since this listing claims it's the import, I thought I's choose here to put this). Here's the tracklisting for the UK import:
    Disc 1:
    01. KLF - 3am Eternal (Blue Danube Orbital Mix) (7:40)
    02. Primal Scream Higher Than The Sun (Battersea Shield Mix) (6:20)
    03. Wendy & Lisa - Staring At The Sun (Blinding Mix) (8:34)
    04. Orb & Robbie Williams - I Started A Joke (I Started An Orb Mix) (4:27)
    05. Orb - Once More (FT Explore Satan Mix) (4:46)
    06. Lisa Stansfield - Time To Make You Mine (In My Dreams Mix) (9:58)
    07. Rick Wright - Runaway (Leggit Dub) (13:38)
    08. Art Of Noise - Art Of Love (Youth & Orb Mix) (4:26)
    09. Tubeway Army - Jo The Waiter (Bon Apètit Mix) (9:32)
    10. Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Music For A Found Harmonium (Pandaharmoniumorb Mix) (4:56)
    Disc 2:
    01. Mike Oldfield - Sentinel (Nobel Prize Mix) (14:24)
    02. System 7 - Miracle (Orb Remix) (6:10)
    03. Can - Halleluwa (Halleluwa Orbus II) (9:09)
    04. Grid, The - Crystal Clear (Crystal Clear Water Revival Mix) (7:17)
    05. Meat Beat Manifesto - Radio Babylon (Beach Blanket Bimboland Mix) (12:38)
    06. Tangerine Dream - Towards The Evening Star (Mandarin Cream Mix) (8:23)
    07. Witchman - Angel Art (The Tale Of The Orb Remix) (6:17)
    08. Damage Manual - Sunset Gun (Full Monty Sunny Orb Up Mix) (5:05)
    09. Yasuaki Shimizu - Morocco Mole (6:46)
    10. Mindless Drug Hoover - The Reefer Song (Grass Garden Of Child's Mix) (3:04)

As you can see, many of the tracks are the same, but a bunch of tracks are exclusive to each release. Most of the tracks exclusive to this release are on the newer side, so people looking for old-school Orb may be a little disappointed, but I think that any compilation that has The Orb and Robbie Williams doing a cover of the Bee Gees has to get points for originality.

5 out of 5 stars Turn the lights out..........2000-01-14

This is basically an anthology of Witchman's (aka John Roome) music from 1995 through 1998. Its grim stuff - grinding hip hop beats, eerie synths and horror film voice samples stirred together in John's big black cauldron create the sound of a chilling urban (or perhaps subterranean) nightmare.

The first disc contains later, slightly more 'upbeat' material, while the second has the older and grimier stuff - they don't come much grimier than Destiny, a 10 minute DIRGE of a track.

There's plenty of listening here kiddies, at least 140 minutes - every single one will make you feel like you're in the freezer - it's that cold. Use it to give yourself goosebumps in the height of summer.

again Pitchshifter has changed more or less completely of style.
they have been doing black metal at their beginnings , then a fusion of punk rock and drum and bass : on this one the pop and punky sides are more accentuated, although there is still a synthetic smell to their music. hard to classify, impossible in fact...."Dead battery" is already a classical song....
those guys are not followers, they make the trends....
the cherry on the cake: jello Biafra comes to "sing" on " as seen on TV",whose beat will make your loudspeakers explode....go for it NOW......

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2002-01-26

Once again Pitchshifter seems to have outdone themselves. With cuts like "Hidden agenda" and "Condescension" How can one go wrong. With Pitchshifter's hard-edged combination of punk, techno, and metal; and the brutal social commentary, this easily became one of my favorties.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly suprised by this english band.......2001-12-13

As far as accessible pop-metal goes, Pitchshifters 'deviant' is up there with the likes of Spineshank's 'Height of Callousness'and Fear Factory's 'Digimortal'.

First of all i have to say that the cover art is great. Secondly the music is great and individual. Tracks 3, 4 and 12 really impress while tracks 1, 2, 7 and 9 are all very good. Infact there isn't really a bad song on this radio friendly album.

They appeal to diversifying nu-metal fans and have a industrial dance style going on which works very well. This is also much better than there previous effort (although others tend to disagree). Thoroughly recommended, but if you like girlie singing stick with Lost Prophets and Incubus.

2 out of 5 stars What happened to Pitchshifter?.......2001-08-26

The Pitchshifter sound that has been forged over their last 5 or so releases, culminating wonderfully with "www.pitchshifter.com" has here been stripped to a watered-down sound that could have come from any of 1,000 other bands who are wasting our time (and money) these days. The Pitchshifter formula of brutal guitars mixed with programed drums and other industrial and electronic affects was unlike anything else on the musical scene. That sound is completely gone on this CD--reducing their punishing onslaught to something that MTV would have little problem broadcasting. A very disappointing CD.

I love this cd and would recomend it to and heavy metal fan.

5 out of 5 stars Auntie Aubry's Excursions into The ultraworld.......1999-12-01

A well done 2-CD collection of various artists work, interpreted by the superstars of electronica, THE ORB! Classic and not so classic tracks are given a good reworking by Dr. Alex Patterson, giving the Orb listener a great product. Even fans of the artists being remixed will enjoy the abstract interpretations produced by this phenomenal electronic maestro. A great addition to any CD collection, many of the tracks are set in a mellow sort of mood. Yet, certain tracks definately have a more rugged feel. Also, there is a good amount of danceable tracks for the club/party scene. Yessir, the Orb never ceases to amaze, and Auntie Aubry's excursions are nothing short of amazing.

5 out of 5 stars The best of paul van dyk.......2001-03-12

excellent, a collection of his best remixes before he went commercial, these cds are the core of trance music

5 out of 5 stars excellent melodic trance.......2001-02-06

there are 3 cd's in this release, and what a symphonic trance collaboration...the main grooves here are bass and mid-range with very few vocal samples..this is a history of van dyk's background and explains why he is the leader in melodic trance today..

5 out of 5 stars The Good, The Ok and The Ok........2001-02-03

CD 2 & 3 are the oks. However, if it were possible to wear down a cd, I would have done it with CD 1. It is 78 minutes and 29 seconds of ingenius intense trance music. Try getting that much value for your money from some regular rock n roll band like Van Halen. This triple CD is expensive, but CD 1 is worth the price alone. If I could only take 5 cds with me to a deserted island for the rest of my life, CD 1 would be one of them. Well, I think you get the point.

2 out of 5 stars Almost essential? How about just "almost...".......2000-12-29

Disappointing. Then again, I think Paul Van Dyk has just about finished his run anyway. PVD has been pushing an energetic, melodic, and usually even beautiful style of progressive trance on the EDM world for some time now. Fortunately, he never compromised his artistic integrity for any particular sound. But then his sound became the popular one. This 3 disc set marks the occassion of 6 years of Paul Van Dyk as a DJ, remixer, and producer. And on that note, it does an excellent job of rounding up those singles. But that's about all it does well.

        *ahem*

When I first heard about the set, it showed real promise and I was very excited. 6 years worth of PVD? Sounded great. Unfortunately, the concept was not as well implemented as it could have been. Ideally, we would have gotten 3 mixed CDs charting the evolution of his sound. Let's say a mixed disc of the 92-93 material, another mix of the 94-95 material, and a final mixed disc of the 96-98 material. Or something to that effect. Instead, we get a brilliantly mixed first disc that perfectly captures PVD's sound and then two more discs of "sequenced" PVD remixes that just don't seem to capture the interest very well.

This set has its moments, but in retrospect, I don't know if I could really have justified the gross expenditure it took to put it on my shelf. If there's anyway you can get a copy of just the first disc, do that. Otherwise, maybe you'd better just skip it. Unless you're THAT big of a PVD fan...

3 out of 5 stars fiery mix leading this collection argues for a pricey pickup.......2000-12-19

Well look at the size of this thing. Vorsprung Dyk Technik, German for "bucketloads of music" - though I could be wrong - packs three discs of Paul Van Dyk's remixes under various names, an essentially complete catalog of his work through 1998. Considering he never releases mix discs (though slated for his first commercial release in 2001) this is the closest substitute available for fans of his infrequent full-length albums.

The first set is mixed and the most enticing. Although Here and Back Again saw a style shift towards sleeker tech-trance, Dyk's late 90's work favors deep, squelchy and driving epics, traits shared with producer extraordinaire BT. And, hey, look who's all over the record - a big heap of BT's work and a few collaborations between them, with the mixes generally removing some of the big-tune majesty and breakdown, adding acid energy. Essentially a peak hour performance, all the classics are packed here ("Flaming June" "Remember" "Forbidden Fruit,") bound in cohesive style and still sounding fresh.

The others records understandably struggle to match in excitement, serving primarily as collector treats. While discs two and three present solid tunes courtesy of Humate, Sven Vath, and PVD originals, the simpler production elements and sound contrast argue a case for trance sounding dated faster than other genres.

So while only the Paul Van Dyk die-hards will get a good value here, the fiery mix leading this collection argues for a pricey pick-up. Let's face it, trance fans could easily be paying more for an import set and not have such a thorough compilation. Disc 1- Grade: A Overall Grade: B-

4 out of 5 stars Mindless but great fun.......2001-06-01

A great bit of English eccentricity in the tradition of the Bonzos. Former busker Mindless does a good set of eminently hummable songs with a great sense of twisted fun underpinning them. Almost guaranteed to offend the Religous Right, and I can't think of a better recommendation than that.
