5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

4 out of 5 stars A Revolting Room Full of Revolting Music.......2006-04-23

...if you're a moron. Though Skinlab's never been the most talented band, they have done well for a hardcore nu-metal band and Revolting Room is a nice addition to their work.

One issue with hardcore bands is the never-ending progression most eventually make from screaming vocals to clean singing (Nothingface, Slipknot, Diecast are all examples of this.) Unfortunately, many bands fail to make this transition appealing. While Skinlab, like the aforementioned, does have more clean singing on this album than previous works, the progression is generally smooth. This welcomed transition adds to Skinlab's maturity as a band, setting them apart from angsty nu metal bands like Korn, Slipknot, Ill Nino, etc.

Additionally, the overall production quality is improved over other albums, and the vocalist's screams (where applicable) are even harsher than previously. What the screaming may lack in duration it makes up for in intensity.
As for the instrumentation, it, like the vocals, is generally mellower than on previous works with approximately the same talent value. It's not astounding (most nu metal isn't), but each part complements the others well enough for it not to matter much.

The biggest criticism of this album is that not all of the songs are great, and since there are only 10 tracks, it's difficult to be as forgiving as if the CD had 14 or so. 'Anthem for a Fallen Star,' 'Take as Needed,' and 'Come n Get It' aren't the greatest tracks ever, but decent enough to listen to. 'Slave the Way,' 'Disturbing the Art of Expression,' 'Purify,' 'Jesus Sells,' and 'One of Us' are all excellent, however.

If you're looking for a constant screamfest, Revolting Room will disappoint you, as it's roughly half singing and half screaming. Otherwise, Revolting Room is one of the better hardcore/nu-metal albums to pick up.

One last thing I will address: Some people associate Skinlab with early Machine Head and others try to claim that they too have sold out like Machine Head. For one, Skinlab never sounded very much like Machine Head (the former is clearly nu metal and the latter 80s styled-thrash) and for two, Skinlab hasn't significantly changed enough to merit them as "sellouts." Ignore people who claim otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars TOTALLY UNRECOGNIZED BRILLANCE !.......2003-08-06

I agree with some of the reviers about Skinlab. They are truly incredible and totalyy underated as a Metal-Speed Metal band.

Their songs are at the same time fast, loud, and yet soothing to people who like complex patterns of sound and enjoy music that gets their heart racing.

While the names of their albums may keep away POP fans, this group has a wonderful quality and complexity to their music.

Give them a listen and listen to more then 1 song and you might be pleasantly surprised if you like loud, fast music.

4 out of 5 stars very different but good.......2003-04-02

its hard to compare this album to the other two. but "Revolting Room" is very good. i think its their most complex and well written album. i guess you could call this album a very dark version of Tool. the whole album ties in together very well, you have to listen to it from start to finish.

3 out of 5 stars different....kinda.......2003-01-09

i dont really know how to rate this cd. it's good. but comming from skinlab its kind of weak. skinlab had a wall of sound and a big crunch on the first two albums and its really missing here (except for slave the way). the songs on this album are like a diet-skinlab or skinlab-lite.... plus some cheezy moments like "anthem for a falling star" which isnt too bad till you hear the chorus backround voice come in and say "15 minutes of fame"... i cringed on that song...then the same song has some guy talking like he works for the circus........its weird...i dont know whats goin on in the skinlab camp...but it needs some fine tuning for the next record...

2 out of 5 stars Skinlab-Lite.......2002-10-25

I won't go so far as to say that this album is completely worthless, but it can only be described as a HUGE disapointment after Skinlab's masterpiece "Disembody: The New Flesh". I really hope the Bay Area band community and fans give Skinlab a lot of hell about this album because it's so close to nu-metal that I hardly recognize the band. As another reviewer mentioned, "Slave The Way" is the only song on here really worth listening to because it's the only one that hints of the greatness of their previous album. That song is also the only reason I'm giving this disc 2 stars instead of one.

What makes this disc even more ironic to listen to, is that at the end of it there's a bunch of answering machine messages that Skinlab have received from fans prior to the release of this album, and the majority of the messages talk about how Skinlab is staying so true to the REAL metal community and how they will never sell out. Funny that they would include such messages on an album that could almost (not quite, but almost!) be sold next to Linkin Park. The songs here are interesting, but none of them stick except for "Slave The Way" (which, of course, was the song they released on mp3.com as a preview for the album).

If you really loved Skinlab's second album (as I did) and don't want to be disappointed by this disc (or if you already are), I suggest checking out "The Twisted Rule The Wicked" by Face Down or "Burn My Eyes" by Machine Head, or if you want something with more of a death metal twist but kinda similar sound then get "Revelation Nausea" by Vomitory. Forget "ReVolting Room". Looks like these guys are drifting the same way Machine Head did, only not as dramatically.
