Customer Reviews:
Some good, some bad.......2007-01-07
I agree with many reviewer, this album is under what the band has achieved in the past. The album contains great tracks but also really poor ones, something that you didn't find in "The Light" or "Beware of darkness" The poor numbers here are "Crack the big sky", "The Gypsy", "Can't get it wrong" (very poor pop ballad with bad vocals)
The highlight is the last six songs, which should be just one epic...why did they divided this one? Maybe because this is simply a collage, if it is, I would have cut "The healing colors of sounds part 2" because it doens't fit in the whole sequence. The other good songs are the opening track "Day for night" and the following one "Gibberish" and finally "The distance to the sun" Spock's Beard can do better than this...and they will.
A great, stripped down but amazing Beard album.......2006-11-27
Day For Night is the 4th album from Spock's Beard and is almost the "forgotten" Beard album of the Neal Morse-era. Everyone knows the first three and everyone knows V and Snow, but Day For Night seems to be constantly overlooked. And that's a damn shame, as it's a fantastic album. While it doesn't have a few long songs like previous albums did, it has a lot of excellent 4-9 minute tunes and a 20 minute suite closing the album. The playing and singing, as always, is top notch....in short, this album should NOT be forgotten in the Beard's catalog!
It starts off with the excellent title track and weaves its way through fantastic songs like Gibberish, Skin, Crack the Big Sky, the very pretty acoustic-based Distance to the Sun, before closing with the mammoth suite The Healing Colors of Sound, which is incredible. The title-track instrumental leads into the rockin' My Shoes, the grooving Mommy Comes Back, Lay it Down, which is a gentle, quiet section, before the reprise of the title-track song and the My Shoes finale. Just amazing.
This would also be a great Beard album to get if you're starting to get into them (any of the first 4 albums would be good ones to start with).
Beard Trim.......2004-09-30
First of all, if this is your first forray into Spock's Beard and the renaissance of progressive rock, this CD is a great intro into the talents of the band. Except for a couple of semi-weak songs ("Can't Get it Wrong" and "Gypsy"), this album stands up quite well.
When I first heard Spock's Beard, it was through the free download of "Gibberish" from this CD. I have learned much since then about the band.
I give this 4 stars because of the self-absorbed, Styx/ELO-like "Can't Get It Wrong" and the vocal tone Morse assumes occassionally is a bit nasally for my ears (but light-years better than Dream Theatre's lead vox).
For this effort, Spock's Beard trimmed up their sound to a tight, well-arranged combo pressing out solid licks and fairly intelligent intro segments. The 10-minute "Crack the Big Sky" seems to take only 3 minutes to hear...the songs are listenable and easily approachable to the uninitiated.
The massive multi-song compilation-piece of "The Healing Colors of Sound" that closes this album foreshadows the upcoming concept work, "Snow", a CD worth investigating.
The Beard provide shades of classic 70's progressive bands (without sounding contrived or simply a "lifting" of other artist's ideas) mixed into their own (Neal Morse's) original sound.
Other albums to consider with this CD:
Spock's Beard: Snow
Spock's Beard: V
Neal Morse: Testimony
Live this way........2003-08-02
'Day for Night',like any Spock's Beard album, is literally crammed with moments of sublime invention and beauty. Although this album took longer to grow on me than any of the other Beard albums, there is enough fantastic material on here to instantly merit the highest rating. The bands signature sound is intact, as is the format of the album laid down on previous releases, with an extended track and a mellower ballad both complementing the usual range of melodic, catchy and spectacularly executed pop influenced prog Neal Morse churns out so effectively.
The title track is an instant classic, and is probably among the strongest cuts on offer here. Spectacular vocal harmonies towards the end of this song only hint at what is to be attempted on 'Gibberish', a delicate and in places plain odd song, with the bands vocal talents being showcased in their entirety for what seems like the first time. 'Skin' completes an impressive opening trio, and this song posseses the most single potential, unleashing the kind of infectious and epic chorus only Neal Morse can produce. The albums strongest moment is certainly the obligatory concluding epic, the poweful 'The Healing Colours of Sound'. Although the song is split into seperate tracks on the CD (I agree wholeheartedly with Lord_Chimp's comment on this matter) the suite achieves continuity and a sustained texture very well. Its not the bands best extended track (see 'At The End of the Day' or 'The Light'), but 'The healing Colours' is another compelling addition to a back catalogue that is frightningly unblemished. Other highlights arrive with 'The Gypsy' and 'Cant get it Wrong', the only full band composition here.
A number of reviewers have commented on the lyrics, dismissing them as weak or ridiculous. While I dont think Morse is the best lyricist around today, I fell the lyrics work as an extension of the music, contributing to the overall texture of the song. Also, anyone trying to analyse the lyrics of a song called, um, 'Gibberish' really needs to take a more objective standpoint.
Once again a classic release form Spock's Beard, 'Day For Night' comes highly recommended.

Album Description
Set amid the chaos of pre-revolutionary China, small time thief, Sing, aspires to be one of the sophisticated and ruthless Axe Gang whose underworld activities overshadow the city. Stumbling across a crowded apartment complex aptly known as "Pig Sty Alley," Sing attempts to extort money from one of the ordinary locals, but the neighbors are not what they appear. Sing's comical attempts at intimidation inadvertently attract the Axe Gang into the fray, setting off a chain of events that brings the two disparate worlds face-to-face.
The exotic original score by Raymond Wong is complemented by the film's classical pieces, notably Sarasate's acclaimed "Zigeunerweisen" and Khachaturian's famous "Sabre Dance."
Customer Reviews:
What about the dialogue?.......2006-04-08
I have a question about the dialogue on this CD... is it interspersed on separate tracks between songs, or do they talk during the songs?
Loved it!!!.......2005-10-21
As a Chinese, I love this soundtrack and the movie very much! There is no more I can say. However, it's a good soundtrack and I love it very much.
great CD, but incomplete..........2005-09-20
This is the soundtrack released to the U.S. Just so you know, the soundtrack sold in Asia features a few more songs. Most notably missing is a song preformed by Huang Sheng Yi, called "Zhi Yao Wei Ni Huo Yi Tian" which comes toward the end of the movie. It might be my favorite song in the movie, and it's too bad it's missing from the U.S. soundtrack.
Fantastic Soundtrack.......2005-08-20
If you have seen this unbelievable movie, then you know how incredible the music is. It matches the mood of the movie and everything the previous reviewer said I agree with. It has great sweeping scores with an extremely cool "oriental/chinese" sound and presence to it. I mostly bought it for a few cool songs I fell in love with when I saw the movie and the whole album is great. You will recognize a few of the songs used in a lot of other chop socky/martial arts movies and you'll really enjoy having them along with all the other great music on this soundtrack and it goes without saying, but if you haven't seen or bought this movie yet, get it. We need to encourage Stephen Chow and support him in his endeavors to make more great movies instead of the same old rehashed formulaic, cookie cutter, boring(need I go on?)"Hollywood Entertainment" fare.
There comes a time when you find a soundtrack that's..........2005-06-14
...Absolutely perfect!
As a collector of various movie soundtracks, there are many times when I am utterly dismayed by how unrelated they are to the movies they are supposed to complement.
The Kung Fu Hustle CD, however, is far from any of that! I watched this movie four times in the theater, and every time, the music just mesmerized me from start to finish! The movie was great, and the music was even better!
I quickly ordered the soundtrack from Amazon.com, and when it arrived, I was far from disappointed. This CD is fantastic! It does not leave anything out. What you hear in the movie is what you hear in the CD from beginning to end. The tracks are even in order of which they appear in the movie!
If you enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle, then the soundtrack is definitely for you. Go forth! Purchase the soundtrack, and prepare to be pleasantly entertained by the delightful music!

Simply put, this is one of the top ten recorded recitals. Peerless singing. Not to mention heartbreaking. Music lovers who are familiar with Podles' voice will know why. Those who don't should by this disc.
Podles is in her element.......2003-03-04
Eva Podles brings her considerable vocal talents to this recording. She captures the darkness of the Russian soul. As well, she brings Mussorgsky's Nursery Songs to life. It is easy to hear the wonder and temper and joy and life of the child through her singing. Even if you don't know Russian, you can feel the spirit of these songs.
Unique and stupendous talent on a marvelous CD.......2003-02-02
Short and sweet review...this will fill you up in a way that only Mme. Podles' other performances can. She is phenomenon. Her rich flexible voice, fabulous technique, and intelligent use of vocal color to convey character and emotion will not disappoint.

What can I say? I saw this incredible contralto in recital...I was on the edge of my seat. The Mussourgsky is absolutely hair-raising...

Another very strong release from this metal powerhouse.......1999-02-04
It is a pleasure reviewing Riot CD's as one knows the material is going to be very strong due to the bands consistant output of high quality, carefully written music. "Nightbreaker" is no exception. This CD was released in 1994 everywhere except the USA. That is a shame and American metalheads have been deprived of a good one. The CD boasts possibly the most powerful drum mix I have ever heard. The production quality is utterly amazing; strong, pounding drums, but not compromising the guitar sound at all which is usually the case with huge drum mixes. "Soldier" gets things going in an uptempo Riot kind of way. The song contains good lyrics and fine singing by Mike DiMeo who's voice soars through this one. "Destiny" is another good song, if perhaps a bit too "happy" sounding for my taste. The band included a fine version of Deep Purple's "Burn" on this CD as well. The title track "Nightbreaker" ranks up there as one of Riots best songs. It is power metal defined. "Medicine Man", "Magic Maker", "I'm On The Run" and "Babylon" are slower but still powerful, showing a more bluesy oriented side of Riot. The band has re-recorded one of their most popular songs from the 1980's, "Outlaw", and the new recording does the song justice, although honestly I prefer the newer speed dominated Riot songs of the late 80's and 90's. My other favorite track on the CD is "Silent Scream". This features a great chorus and ranks up their with Riots best work. If there is a weak spot on the CD is is the ballad "In Your Eyes". While it's well written and well performed, it sounds out of place here. If Riot is going to do a ballad, it would serve them better to make it a power ballad in the vein of old Uli Roth-style Scorpions, ala "In Trance". Don't let this mild bit of constructive criticism detract you from adding this to your CD collection. Riots "Nightbreaker" is a superior release by a band that has everything: chops, song writing ability, talent, integrity and power. They have been a secret for too long in America. Let's hope they are not a secret much longer. Buy, and you will enjoy.

Mercyful Purple.......2006-12-25
The only problem with unleashing a cd like this on the world is that it makes you wish the band had actually put out an album or two instead of fizzling away. I guess there's no real need to complain coz at least we got something from these guys. Black Rose is the kind of band you throw on when you're jamming out to Black Sabbath and Deep Purple albums as opposed to King Diamond and Mercyful fate ones. Little hints of Diamond's vocals and Fate's sound are found, but not much. Diamond seems to be finding himself, shifting from his snarly vocals to a flat out Alice Cooper impersonation and just a pinch of his falsetto. The album's obviously been remastered and touched up, but seems to have the production sound of an old Deep Purple album. In between(and sometimes in the middle) of the tunes are talk between band members....in Danish of course. Hardcore King fans will certainly pick this up, and some will be disappointed. Folks who aren't big on King Diamond but dig that Purple sound might find this surprisingly good. Either way it's worth the time.
3 and 1/2 stars.......2004-08-19
I agree with most of the positive reviews of this album. Only in addition to the Prog and Early Metal influences, I also hear a little glam and post-punk as well. Like maybe the more psychedelic moments of the Damned or the Stranglers were an influence as well. Anyhow, an ear-opening experience for the King's fans.
An awesome album.......2004-05-26
Black Rose: 20 Years Ago - A Night Of Rehearsals (2001.) A 1981 rehearsal album by Black Rose, King Diamond's pre-Mercyful Fate band.
When we think of the legendary Danish metal star King Diamond, we generally only think of his material that he recorded with Mercyful Fate or the solo material that he recorded as the years progressed. What many people (even fans of King Diamond) don't know is that he played in a band BEFORE Mercyful Fate! He was once in a band called Black Rose. Sadly though, that era of his career was all but forgotten - until now. A set of Black Rose rehearsal recordings has been released! Read on for my review of 20 Years Ago - A Night Of Rehearsals.
PROS:
-If you want to hear what King Diamond sounded like before he joined the legendary Danish metal band Mercyful Fate, this compilation will answer your questions - and may leave you wanting more!
-The sound that Black Rose had was a sort of classic rock/power rock/classic metal hybrid, similar to the sound that made Deep Purple popular. Accordingly, if you're a Deep Purple fan, you may want to consider checking this set out.
-The band plays very well during the rehearsal session that is captured on this album.
CONS:
-The only real complaint that I have with this set is that the sound quality isn't that good. This is because this was a rehearsal recording that was never intended for commercial release, and it was recorded twenty years before it was released. But if you can get through the bad sound quality, you're probably going to be impressed.
-The sound featured on this album is very different from that of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond's solo material. Accordingly, many fans of the King may be turned off by it.
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent compilation that demonstrates beautifully that King Diamond was rocking hard even before his Mercyful Fate days. If you're a fan of the King, don't hesitate to pick up this release. Listen with an open mind, though - It may end up not being what you'd expect!
Deep Purple with King Diamond Style Organ-Playing.......2004-03-04
This is a great raw raw recording of a practice session for King's first band in 1980. Expertly remastered to hi-fi! The musicians are very good, and the music is great. Just what I thought it would be. The baroque-esque organ really makes the transition from this band's Deep Purple influences to King Diamond's style.
King's vocals are undeveloped at this point, rarely using his falsetto. Based on musicality, he was probably the weak-link in the band, but that makes the album even more authentic. Great guitar-work.
Great original songs, very catchy. Difficult to make out the lyrics, through heavy Dannish accents, some songs might be in Dannish, so only 4 stars.
Lots of goofing around, and the sound of beer bottles being opened during the songs makes for an environmental listen.
They cover "Radar Love" by Golden Earing, and it sounds pretty sweet!
Prog Shock from the King.......2003-01-10
In the late 70's there appeared a totally bizarre and depraved shock rock band in Denmark. Their frontman was none other than present day Metal icon King Diamond. What this disk contains is what it says. Over an hour of rehearsal time laid down on tape and surprisingly clear and professional sounding. Nothing is edited out here, so you get to hear all the between song antics within the studio. (some of which are pretty funny) Also you'll hear the band mess up and start over. The actual songs themselves are played excellently with hardly any mistakes.
If you like Merciful Fate and King Diamond but have never heard of the King's first band, you may be a bit surprised. The band's style lies somewhere between 70's style Prog rock and Heavy Metal. I hear elements of Early Judas Priest, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Early Genesis, Kansas, Yes, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath. King's voice hadn't developed into the psychotic animal we know and love today. He sounded more like a a hybrid of Alice Cooper and early Rob Halford.
Also the lyrics, while dark, twisted and quite morbid (try Kill For Fun, or I Need Blood), they didn't touch on satanic themes at all. In the liner notes King talks about some of their on stage theatrics, including pig's eyes, blood, and entrails; stabbing baby dolls, setting off bombs, and other disgusting and loony things. So if you like shock rock, prog, or are a major King Diamond fan, check out Black Rose. You'll be enlightened for sure.

GIVE IT A CHANCE.......2004-09-29
I bought this album 19 years ago. I guess it was a birthday or something cause I bought a few records that day. So that you realized what I was expecting on this one, I bought it along with Raven "Wiped-Out", Venom "Welcome to hell", Hellhammer "Apocalyptic Raids", Grave Digger "Witch hunter", Impaler "Rise of Mutants".........OH and I forgot Twisted Sister "Under the Blade". Anyway, I was into very black metal and all that stuff so I kind of put aside this one until 4 or 5 years later when I gave it a second chance and when I hear it again, it really stucked in my mind. I have to confess, I picked it up because of the cover I didn't know what I was buying.
Unfortunately, CD was gained too much market and a lot of albums had to wait to see the light again (and still are). I was waiting for this one a long time ago, until I got import.
Now, NIGHT OF THE BLADE is probably on of the most unfortunate CD's that I can imagine. This album has it all. It really rocks, you can hear Def Leppard on their first 2 albums all over the place. This one, is heavier but very melodic. The classic song on this one is "Love Struck" but the rest songs are great. This band never made it big, in fact they changed the vocalist in the middle of the recording of this one. You can see it on the bonus tracks (that were not on the original album), some songs are faster and not very well produced like the first 10 songs.
They realesed other albums but I haven't listen to them so I can't tell. This one says it all. Not one song is bad until the bonus tracks start; it kind of went down with those songs. They are not bad songs, but don't match with the rest so it's like listening to other band.
If you are looking for some unknown hard rock that it's guaranteed. Try this one, you won't regret it and you won't believe your ears!!!!!

Great performance, bad quality.......2004-07-15
This concert's playlist is a killer. Most of the stuff is from the albums "A Distant Thunder" and "Nosferatu". Thier live performance is incredible. The guitarist play everything note by note and without any fault despite the diffucilty of the songs. Rivera is at peak performance.
But the sound quality is very bad. If you like to hear Helstar anyway just like me, this album is a killer. And if you like to hear a good sounding album, keep away from this
don't buy this album.......2000-10-13
This albums sound quallity is too bad.I have nosferatu and distant thunfer they are awesome classic progressive/thrash albums in 80's. I know its Bootleg concert but I did not understand anything. don't waste your money for this concert album better to listen old albums of Helstar.

Gothic symphonic metal that's a little too cliche........2006-05-21
Back in the early to mid nineties, when tape trading was at an all-time high (ah, the nostalgia), I recall my brother (the instigator of my metal fetish and to whom this site is dedicated) had managed to collect literally hundreds of underground metal releases. I would randomly pick out tapes in search of new listening experiences, clutching to the hope of finding great bands amidst a sea of mediocrity.
He handed me a tape one day that contained Ancient's debut full length "Svartalvheim". At first it seemed just like every other standard black metal release, but I found myself going back to it occasionally, finding that it's bleak atmosphere, and raw production only added to the quality of what was a fine collection of memorable underground evilness.
So it came as a bit of a shock to me, after many years of neglecting the band, to find that 2001's "Proxima Centauri" was such a completely different piece of work. I'm not completely sure whether it was a gradual process or a sudden change in direction, but Ancient have become a gothic, symphonic metal band, that still remains within the realm of black metal, due to the occasional repetitive riff structure, and the raspy vocal style of Aphazel. Just as Agathodaimon's latest release has mixed a number of differing styles of metal, Ancient have made a conscious decision not to be held back by the single mindedness of "true" black metal.
"Night Visit", the bands 6th full-length album, continues with this modern sound, and makes no attempt to bring anything new to the table. It's all been done before! That's not to say that the album isn't enjoyable to listen to, it's just that it will most likely (unlike the debut album) fail to demand repeated spins. Tracks such as "Envision the Beast" and the title track "Night Visit" are highlights and show what Ancient is capable of. Unfortunately, there is just a bit too much cliche material for me to recommend the album to anyone but the biggest fans (and I really do find the song "Horroble" to have a very appropriate name), especially when one considers the amount of releases on the market in this genre.
Long live black metal.......2005-12-17
Hails
I only see one other review for this album so far, wow. I am also surprised by that fact.
Ancient is an excellent black metal band, their music is dark, heavy, and melodic. I just happened to see this at a local record store, decided to pick it up, and it was one of the better decisions of my life. This is some great, sinister black metal indeed. If you have'nt heard ancient yet, and your into black metal, then what are you waiting for? Get this album!
Grim, Ravishing Black Metal.......2005-08-06
I am wondering why I am the first person to write a review for this album as i cannot reccomend it enough to fans of the black metal genre. This band has an incredibly high level of musical ability. Ancient is definetly one of the most underrated bands that nobody has ever heard of. THe band is extremely tight sounding while playing at inhumane sppeds. The music, while much of the time playing well over 200 beats a minute, sounds haunting, chilling, and almost ethreal. No matter what black metal you like, whether it be Darkthrone, Thorns, WIndir, or mainstream acts such as C.O.F. and Dimmu, there is somethin for everyone in this album. Absolutely a must have in every black metal fans collection.

The Other Side of the Coin.......2004-04-21
Fans of Fates Warning don't need these reviews. For those who are new to the band, there are essentially two groups of fans: those who liked the original singer, John Arch, and those who prefer Ray Alder. I fall into the latter category and quite honestly find the often quasi-religious devotion to Arch to border on the bizarre. Arch fans usually point to his voice and lyrics, but his lyrics tend to fall into the "monsters and dragons" category of Ronnie James Dio, and his voice is serviceable. His phrasing is somewhat unique. I can see where some would like it, but I find it to be a bit scattered -- especially when he sings over odd-time musical arrangements. The other review reflects the pro-Arch point of view.
Of course, this isn't to say that I don't like some of the band's work with Arch. "The Spectre Within" and "Awaken the Guardian" both had their moments and would probably be better places to start for the uninitiated. In my opinion, "Night on Brocken" is little more than a poor attempt to mimic Iron Maiden. The band simply hadn't developed anything resembling the progressive chops and focus that it became known for through albums like "No Exit," "Perfect Symmetry" and "Parallels" (i.e., after Frank Aresti and Mark Zonder joined the band). "Damnation" is the only track on this album worth listening to in my opinion.
Remastered Metal Masterpiece : Most Underrated Debut Ever!!.......2002-11-22
You have to give this release 5 stars in my opinion. It's so ahead of it's time that even today this is very fresh sounding. Remastered to perfection, "Night On Broken" is without question one of the most underrated Heavy Metal debut releases of all time.....
Those of you who are into the new age Fates Warning, like the utterly boring "A.P.S.O.G.", may not be all that interested in purchacing this masterpiece....Bluntly speaking, it's quite simply too good for your ears.
This, along with "The Spectre Within" and "Awaken The Guardian" are the best of the Fates Warning recording collection. Nothing they released after these gems were comparable in my opinion....
"No Exit" was a very simliar effort as far as musicianship is concerned, but the vocals of R. Adler left something to be desired compared to J. Arch. Arch found a different vocal area, more Heavy Metal so to speak. He was the Metal voice behind Fates, and I'll never know why they decided to replace him.....
This is for all of the old school Fates fans. It's also for those of us who long for the heavy, quickly paced, intelligent mystic that the first three Fates releases captured so seemingly easily.....
It's a timeless classic in my humble opinion, and should be recognized as one of the most impressive Heavy Metal debut releases of all time....
FATES RULES!!!!
