One Of His Best.......2003-06-07
If one can get past the laughably bad Star Wars opening track, this album is a stunner. Though lacking the fluid continuity of his previous efforts, Tomita manages to select darker, more beautiful, and more moody pieces than before, creating an incredible dream-like atmosphere without resorting to the usual space-ship and "alien" sounds that tarnished The Planets and The Bermuda Triangle. His sound became larger, more ambient, and denser. The final Bach medley "The Sea Named Solaris" is Tomita's finest hour, and this album is a must for any fan or Tomita's work, or of electronic music. A flawed but still great work.
Complete list of Tomita's classical albums..........2002-03-05
This CD is fantastic, but a big box set of every classical Tomita album would be even better. Most of the CDs out of print for years are absolutely fantastic. Four of his albums would fit two on one CD. Here's the complete list...
Snowflakes Are Dancing 1974 (11 Debussy pieces) The newly remastered CD is an audiophile recording, adds Prelude To The Afternoon of a Faun and is available for a good price.
Pictures At An Exhibition 1975 (Mussorgsky)
Firebird 1976 (Stravinsky: Firebird. Debussy: Prelude To The Afternoon of A Faun. Mussorgsky: Night On Bald Mountain)
The Planets 1976 (Holst)
Kosmos 1978 (Star Wars Title. Space Fantasy- R. Strauss: 2001 Title, Wagner: Ride of The Valkyries and Tannhauser Overture. Honnegar: Pacific 231. Ives: Unanswered Question. Rodrigo: Aranjuez. Grieg: Solveig's Song. Dinicu-Heifetz: Hora Staccato. Bach-Tomita: The Sea Named Solaris)
The Bermuda Triangle 1979 (Sibelius: Valse Triste. And excerpts from... Williams: Close Encounters. Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet, Scythian Suite, Symphonies 5 and 6, Violin Concerto 1. My favorite electronic CD.)
Bolero 1980 (Ravel: Daphis and Chloe. Pavane for A Dead Princess. Bolero. Mother Goose Suite)
The Grand Canyon 1982 (Grofe)
Canon of The Three Stars 1984 (Pachelbel: Canon. Rachmaninoff: Vocalise. Albinoni: Adagio. Bach: Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. 4 pieces from Villa Lobos: Bachianis Brasileiras 2, 4, and 7)
Live At Linz, Austria 1985 (With speakers on both sides of the Danube River and live soloists. Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring. Japanese Traditional: Cranes In Their Nest. Vaughn Williams: The Lark Ascending. Wagner: Tristan Und Isolde-Liebestod. Beethoven: Ode To Joy with full Choir.)
Live In New York 1988 (Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Dukas: Fanfare. Mahler: Symphony 3 in D Minor - 5th Movement. Traditional: Chinese War Lord Going Home. Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue. Fisher-Dvorak: Goin' Home. My favorite live concert CDs.)
electronic instruments, very good selections,.......1999-05-29
I have this album in vinyl, should be better without background hiss. Star Wars theme is quite interesting, lovers of "the force" should be impressed. Worth every dime.

Customer Reviews:
It's a keeper!.......2007-01-28
It's one of my favourite DVDs. Recording/Sound/Video quality is great, musicians and performances are great. What else you need on a DVD?
Guitar Shredder's Delight!!!.......2006-11-07
Irrefutably phenomenal! Some of the best guitar playing you will ever see. The production quality is top rate and there are lots of good close-up shots at the fretwork of these fabulous guitarists--Paul Gilbert & Nuno Bettencourt. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Two thumbs up; go for it!
Superb rock DVD.......2005-05-13
This is simply a superb guitar-rock live DVD. It is expensive, but all the money worth, and there is a lot of tracks. My favorite one is "Gravity". Nuno is back on the top and Paul Gilbert is supercilious. All the musicians are great.
A must buy for Extreme/Guitar fans.......2004-10-08
I bought this in Tokyo on holiday this year along with a boatload of other extreme albums and it is excellent. Featuring probably the best guitarists you'll ever hear this is a must buy.
As a more recent devotee to Extreme I found this rare opportunity to see Nuno and Gary too good to miss. We also get to hear John Paul Jones perform both his solo material and some Zeppelin greats.
Paul Gilbert who was previously unknown to me shows very quickly why he is so highly regarded as a performer.
Get it now.

Men, this DVD is great!
Great music and great performances by everyone of them, especially Paul Gilbert and Nuno Bettencourt.
The cd features the 9 last songs of the list, from Scarified to Red Rooster.
If you are a guitar player, you must absolutely by it!

Customer Reviews:
Album is great, actually one of Yngwie's best, but the mix and production are the worst ever!!!.......2007-04-24
I love the songs on this. Yngwie's playing is great as well. However, the mix and production are the worst of any CD I've ever heard. What the heck is wrong with Yngwie on this?
War would probably be more fun than this album.......2006-08-21
Man, the adjectives just come flowing out of me in relation to this album. So many in fact that I think I'm gonna do a little dictionary kinda thang here. I'm going to put down a descriptive word and give you it's special meaning in relation to this album:
Ridiculous - Booklet art. I mean look at the back cover. There is a picture of a suit of armour with Yngwies head superimposed over it. Or did he actually dress up like this.
Pompous - The other photos - the guy smiles in a total of one of them, in all the others he's got this studied look and in one he's got a sword in one hand and a guitar in the other. Is he trying to be Rhapsody?
Neoclassical - If you don't know what this means your reading the wrong review. For those in the know, yep this is more of the same in the very worst possible sense.
One dimensional - OK that's cheating cos it's two words. But it sums up this album - it's full of neoclassical runs for the sake of it without any imagination. Understated riffs that are barely worthy of the name except for Bad Reputation which ain't a Thin Lizzy cover alas. More gothic lyrics (get a life - look out your window and think of something to write about). And of course we get instrumentals with stupid Latin names, just in case he wasn't pretentious enough.
Desperate - "Cover art used by special arrangement with legendary artist Frank Frazetta". Seriously, the cover art got more attention for this nonsense than the tunes. And it ain't any wonderful thing anyway. The cover in question has two pseudo fantasy/medieval dudes getting, well getting medieval on each other. The artist apparently does covers etc for Conan comics or somesuch. Cool if Yngwie was Rhapsody or Dragonforce. And if his fan base was 15-20, however methinks that most of his (dwindling) fanbase is probably more like 30-35 so how about we get some maturity in outlook/lyrics etc? The whole 'I'll get you with my axe blah blah blah' and 'you'll never defeat me, don't you see/my arpeggio will bring you low'. What a lot of... well I can't say given the family viewing timeslot we're in!
This album is pretty dire. Facing the Animal was good, no question about that. And Live!! was a well times piece of party rawk rock. So what went wrong here? I own every darn studio LP by this guy and have copped heaps of flak for it over the years from mates. But now even I'm starting to wonder (actually I did continue buying his albums - Attack!! plumbing even lower depths but that's a story for another review).
For anyone who cares by this point the band here is John Macaluso (D), Mats Oluasson (keys) and Mark Boals on vox. Here the man sounds broken in voice, toiling with a powerless voice that's only useful for high end straining. Actually it's weird to see him back in the fold but obviously Yngwie had gone through all his vocalist options and was starting at the top of the list again. But to be fair to Boals I've heard his efforts on the Lapse of Reality album and he sounded great there. So what's the go here?
I fully expect a raft of negative votes for this review, hey if it makes you feel better go ahead. Just don't blame me if you blow your dough on this and discover that this album does indeed give a new meaning to the word unloveable. Darn it all, as a young pup I used to buy any mag with an Yngwie article... what went wrong ...
At least the last track is genuinely amusing. Hey you deserve something to smile about if you make it all the way to the end of this record.
FOR THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE YNGWIE, GO TO HELL!!!.......2006-02-06
I'm sick of y'all bashing my man Yngwie J. Malmsteen, I like this album so much, I bought the Imported version and the US version at one of his shows. Me myself, being a guitar player, I have to say that WAR TO END ALL WARS is one of the rawest Yngwie albums out there, so unless you've been to one of his shows and got to meet him, please don't be quick to judge a book by it's cover. In fact, I dare anyone to challenge Yngwie Malmsteen to a shred off competition, CHALLENGE HIM!!!!
Al-eyet?!!
Bloody x-cellent !!!!!!!!!!.......2005-05-05
I have no problem @ ALL w/ the production of this gem (it just suits the music just fine...).
The songs are all very strong (w/ the exception of the bonus track 'Black Sheep' which is just plain silly)...
Hell, I even prefer this release over Alchemy.
Yngwie RULES !!
Yngwie Who?.......2005-03-07
This album in no way resembles Malmsteen's unbelievable playing of the '80's! Yawn is right!! Worst mix ever!! (my grandmother can do a better mix!...and she's dead!)The lead vocals are torturous to listen to! Why can't someone as talented as Malmsteen come up with better songs? and better solo's? Nevermind the ridiculous lyrics!!
Been there...heard that!.. remember his song "Deja Vu"? ...I have that feeling every time I hear his solo's!. How many of the same scale patterns do we have to endure before we all roll our eyes into the backs of our heads??(granted that they ARE fast and, for the most part, clean) This album has all of the makings of a carelessly put together "rush job" for some quick $$.
Unlistenable garbage that's not worth the plastic it was recorded on.The only thing this "CD" is good for is a......FRISBEE!! Don't waste your money or your time on this trash! Malmsteen....you should be ashamed of yourself ! Maybe less time teasing your mop and more time in a practice room will put that much needed creativity back into your solo's. YNGWIE WHO?????....NOW IT'S TRUE!!!

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17
I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.
I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.
An interesting mix..........2002-05-18
This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.
While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...
A touch of history...........2002-01-28
An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****

Sean Hickey's CV includes an impressive array of commissions and performances, due no doubt to the combination of adventurousness and accessibility that we find on this disc of nine short works. The longest, at just over 13 minutes is his Flute Sonata, whose three movements boast a nice combination of attractive melody, energetic, complex rhythms, and in the middle movement, a lively perkiness. Five other short pieces for various combinations of instruments, exhibit similar qualities. They include the aptly named Fluff for solo flute, the flute-clarinet duet Pair of Pants (Hickey has a penchant for oddball titles), and a piece for bassoon and piano, Granfaloon, that goes against typecasting by stressing the agility and lyricism the of which the instrument is capable. The immediacy and brevity of the short works on this disc seem to demand radio airplay. Included in the mix are two vocal pieces, a somber To the Wars, a setting of a 17th-century poem for soprano, and Sagesse, sung to an English translation of a Verlaine poem, for soprano and tenor with a chamber orchestra that plays a prominent role. The instrumental performances throughout are excellent, the singing less so. -- Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
A great CD.......2006-04-23
I am not really a fan of classical/modern music, but when I heard this CD at my girlfriend's house I was really impressed. The composer, Sean Hickey, writes very interesting music that is enjoyable and lyrical. I personally liked Left at the Fork in the Road and Sagesse, and I think his choice of text was elegantly reflected in the music. I was especially impressed with the playing of the clarinettist, flautist, and bassoonist in the first few tracks, which were equally great pieces.
I think Sean Hickey is off to an excellent start and his CD is truly great to listen to, and I would recommend it everyone, especially people who want to broaden their musical horizons...
An excellent CD from an excellent composer.......2006-04-23
Sean Hickey's Left at the Fork in the road is a wonderful album--the musical language is interesting, thoughtful, and engaging, and the contrapuntal writing is very original and lyrical. The sound quality of the recordings are all excellent, and the musicians are clearly top-notch, which makes pieces such as Left at the Fork in the Road and the Flute Sonata even more delightful to listen to.
Sean Hickey is clearly a composer to be reckoned with, and I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone and everyone who loves classical and contemporary music alike!!
A Stellar Debut From An Up-and-Coming Composer.......2006-04-21
Some months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Sean Hickey for an article in the UK-based publication, Music & Vision. (http://mvdaily.com/articles/2005/11/hickey1.htm)
It was indeed a pleasure to meet this young composer, but it was an even greater pleasure to finally hear his debut CD. Hickey is a fabulous young writer, who, even at such a young age, has accumulated a remarkable catalogue of works. We will surely be seeing more of him in the future.
Since meeting this bright young talent, I have continued to follow his progress over several months. I recently came across a review on his latest premiere, "Ampersand," for solo violin & piano, which may be read via: http://classicalnjsociety.org/reviews/WDEH/032006.htm
BUY THIS DISC, for I can assure listeners they will not be sorry. All performers on the disc are first-rate, indeed an added bonus, thus solidifying *Left at the Fork in the Road* as an absolute "must-have" for any classical devotee's collection.

Customer Reviews:
The most explosive guitar but..........2003-03-06
I've listened all discography of Yngwie Malmsteen, personally I hate when the "magazines" said: obviously had to be M. Voals the singer, the best who Yngwie ever had! I think the best vocalist is Jeff S. Sotto, for example you can star to buy MARCHING OUT or INSPIRATION (tracks 1,3,6). Even with this vocalist, this is the most explosive guitar album.
Mostly good........2001-12-26
Let me put it this way: I would not buy this album on the merits of the vocalist alone. Why? Because, in my opinion, the vocalist quite frankly sucks. And no offense to Yngwie, but he should stick to guitar, because the lyrics suck, too. Fortunately for the album and the listeners, the music more than compensates for the poor singing. Obviously, Yngwie's guitar is the focal point of the album, and it is, as usual, superb. The drumming and keyboards are also fairly good, though nothing to write home about. This is a good album, regardless.
Excellent but not worth it.......2001-02-15
It is the same as the european edition, except that it has two tracks instead of Black Sheep of the Family. The pick isn't included.
It is better to buy the other edition, cheaper and quite the same
