Editorial Reviews
Product Description
'Downfall's' rich textures and multifaceted grooves cascade into a pool of strong, lush passages and emotionally powerful vocals, while its lyrics touch on everything from technology overshadowing humanity ('Phantoms') and vampires ('These Are The Nameless') to dying in a fire ('Chapel Of Burning') and longing to be a werewolf ('Midnight Dreams'). Hands down, Downfall is Solitude Aeturnus' best, tightest and most mature release to date. Crash Music.

OH,HOW THE MIGHTY ARE FALLEN.......2007-07-26
I've had all Sirenia/Tristania's albums at one time or other, but this one just doesn't measure up to previous standards. After all,Veland was always the benchmark for good gothic metal.I hate to use that expression "sold out", but he's getting mighty close on this album.I agree with other negative reviewer's comments entirely. Keywords:bland, repetitive, radio friendly[in other words, dumbed down].Gone are all the previous essential elements that made Morten's music a piece of musical mastery[sigh].Even the female vocalist is nothing special:her voice and the musical arrangements reminiscent of Evanescence or Lullacry. This album is strikingly similar to Theatre of Tragedy's 2006 album "Storm",which is certainly no worse than this one,and Tristania's "Illumination" is also a more enjoyable experience,[especially with the superior female vox of Vibeke Stene]even though this has also moved in the same direction, although to a lesser extent. It's as if the various bands work from the same musical template now[a formula if you like]and then they throw in a few sounds and rhythms etc which then identify them as that particular band, just so you don't forget which one you're listening to.You only have to listen to the former Veland masterpiece At Sixes & Sevens to see how bad things have got from a purist's point of view. This album doesn't stir the soul like older albums used to.They might garner a larger following from those who listen to radio, and who know no better, but they will lose loyal longtime fans.Maybe the cash registers will ring louder, but surely that's not what it's about;is it?As the Emperor said to the great composer,on being less than impressed with a new great work which he had just listened to:
"What have you DONE Beethoven!"[read Morten]
If you like the genre, you should love this.......2007-07-03
Of much more consistent quality than their earlier albums, Nine Destinies and a Downfall is a solid example of innovative contemporary gothic metal. A great album overall. Highly recommend it!
Not bad, but..........2007-06-10
As a huge fan of Tristania, and inumerable other gothic metal bands, I must admit that I bought this album with high expectations. Admitedly, it is very good by most standards, but is also far more *shudder* 'pop-friendly' than will generally be apreciated by the average metal-head.
Therefore, for those seeking something heavier, I certainly recommend some of Sirenia's earlier works, as well as those of Tristania- masterpeices all.
But you should by no means overlook 'Nine Destinies and a Downfall', as it's still a very good record compared to most of the dribble out there these days.
Blase.......2007-06-08
I wasn't impressed. The lead singer's voice is not as rich as I expected, and I read somewhere that this band considered themselves to be "symphonic" metal, and even went so far as to invite comparisons with Dimmu Borgir. Yet I heard very few strings or winds, and I heard none of the bombast associated with Dimmu's latest offerings (Death Cult Armageddon & In Sorte Diaboli).
The songs are amateurish with bland, predictable melodies that lack energy and lyrical content that sounds like it came directly out of my buddy's goth sister's diary.
In short, mopey 14-year-old self-mutilators who just lost their "one true love" will eat this up. The rest of us have better things to do.
Amazing!.......2007-04-27
This is easily some of the best symphonic metal I have ever heard. I am glad they decided to keep the death growls to a minimum (they only appear briefly on 3 tracks). That is not my thing and would have prevented me from buying this disc if there had been more. The female vocals are not quite the calibur of Nightwish but they are very good. The music is modern and catchy but there is much more to this outing than what you normally get on the radio these days. Imagine the symphonic metal excess of Nightwish mixed with the radio rock accessibility of Evanescence.

A+ Snare Drum Work!!!.......2001-05-25
This is a fantastic album. It's an absolute must for any student or enthusiast of drumming. The snare drum solos on this recording are executed flawlessly and serve as an excellent study reference filling a real void. Mr. Gauthreaux has obviously spent a lot of time working on his craft. There are some wonderful classics performed, including 'Three Camps', 'Downfall of Paris', and my favourite 'Grandfather's Clock'. The sound of the recording is also excellent and very "true" to the instruments used (love that Gladstone Snare). It's about time somebody recorded these solos - great job!!!!

THE DEAD SHALL F*CKING RISE!!!!.......2006-09-24
Whaddaya know another really underrated awesome album. This is a pretty interesting band because as others mentioned we definitely have a supergroup on our hands. The band is Oscar Garcia doing the vox, Jesse Pintado who went to Napalm Death (is it a coincidence that once he joined ND they got A LOT better?) two guys from Morbid Angel, Dave Vincent doing the bass of course and then PETE SANDOVAL! YES! PETE IS HERE!!! Geez, that should be more than enough for you to buy this but let's get into some more details shall we?
If I had to describe this album in one word I'd call it a 'Whirlwind', 'Tornado', 'Hurricane', or any of those other natural disasters that involve air. Yes you have 16 songs and the longest is about three minutes, half of them being under two. Sorry kids, no 10-minute epic technical Opeth masterpieces of art to splooge in your pants over because this is balls to the wall AGGRESSION. I mean you all love Reign In Blood right? Well this is basically the RIB of grindcore so to speak. This is grindcore with some serious f*ckin riffs and blast beats galore. Speaking of the those, it's pretty amazing that they use it frequently but it still seems like they're placed perfectly in the songs and it just feels awesome. These guys were able to do on this record what ND were not on their first two records, which was harness the insane brutality more accurately. Yeah they had Bill Steer but I dont think he reached his potential until Carcass.
Ok so there's no solos on the album, big deal. Now I don't what that to deter some people from trying this out. Some people (well I used to as well) think that if it has no solos then it's not metal, which I've realized is a sorry-*ss excuse to dismiss something. This album alone completely shatters that argument and after just one listen I'll bet you feel the same.
So how's the vocals? INTENSE. This Oscar guy sounds like a souped-up more brutal version of Max Cavalera actually, and that's saying something considering Max aint exactly one of the Bee Gees. Yes he is doing the "yelling like I have two hearing aids" style but I like it. Like ND, they sing about left-wing political issues (like corporate take overs, animal cruelty, etc)I also love Dave's bass here, it's so crunchy and thick it's like eating Grape Nuts without milk, just check out the second track!
The only criticism one could make of this album is that is has that 'samey' feel to it but if you're a true metal fan I believe you'll be able to discern each song and really enjoy it.
My tip for this (and other albums with this problem) is to never listen to just one song from the album, always listen to the WHOLE thing to get the full effect. Hey it works for me.
I don't see any reason to dislike it if you're an extreme metal fan, another totally essential album.
Highlights - After World Obliteration, Fear of Napalm, Whirlwind Struggle, Dead Shall Rise
I'll end with some good news and bad news. The good news is that these guys just put out a new album last month and I heard it's not bad. The bad news is that Jesse actually died last August from complications with his diabetes. Rest in peace man...
Original, seminal, influential, essential, and bah-roo-tal!.......2006-06-28
Napalm Death and Bolt Thrower are often credited for being grindcore's godfathers, but Terrorizer were every bit as responsible for making and popularizing this type of music. In other words, if Napalm Death (who debuted in 1987) and Bolt Thrower (1988) planted grindcore's seeds, then Terrorizer watered them and helped them to grow and prosper. Thus, all three bands were at the root of grindcore's creation.
And Terrorizer were not only one of grindcore's first bands, they were also one of the first extreme metal supergroups. Two out of the four band members, bassist/vocalist David Vincent and drummer Pete Sandoval, would later become famous for their involvement in Morbid Angel, and guitarist Jesse Pintando was apart of Napalm Death.
All metalheads need to know the following two words: "World Downfall." This is the title of Terrorizer's first--and so far only--studio album (which was released in 1989). This disc is widely thought of as being immensely influential in the grindcore genre. In fact, it has got to be one of the most important metal albums in the history of extreme music. Terrorizer were, after all, the first American band to fuse thrash with death metal.
"World Downfall" kind of sounds like Napalm Death, circa 1987 (the "Scum" era), except these songs are longer and David's vocals are much more constipated. This record is one long, ultra-intense, giga-heavy, super fast maelstrom composed of walls of crushing guitar noise and constant, speed of light blast beats. It is so full of scorching riffs and walloping blast beats, one can't help but wonder if Jesse's fret board is smoking and Pete's bass drum is in splinters by the time the first song is done playing.
Jesse and Pete are incredibly nimble and skilled musicians. They never fall behind or get lost in the mix, and they both play an equal part in driving the songs' rhythms.
None of the songs ever cop into any kind of melody or slow tempos. Thus, when the album is over, about all the listener remembers is one long blur. But, if you listen closely, there are a few standout tracks here. "After World Obliteration" is the album opener, and since it is an onslaught of blindingly fast riffs and pounding bass drums, it sets the pace well for the rest of the songs to follow. Later, "Fear Of Napalm" is a fiery, churning steamroller, and "Corporation Pull-In" is backed by careening guitars and insane drumming. The last really memorable song is track seven, "Condemned System." Pete really gets to show off his talents, here (he goes berserk on his trapkit and creates an all-over-the-place, jackhammer rhythm.)
If you're just getting into Terrorizer (in 2006), you might not understand what the big deal is about, since there are louder bands out there nowadays. But bare in mind that "World Downfall" came before all of those bands. (Without this album, there would be virtually no grindcore as we know it, today.) So, if you've given this disc a couple of listens and you still (for whatever reason) don't get anything out of it, you should still give Terrorizer credit for being so influential. And if you're a Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, or extreme metal aficionado, there is almost no C.D. you need to buy more than this one.
REAL Grind.......2006-06-11
You shouldn't call yourself a grind fan until you listen to this album. Sure, it's the only album they ever released, but it's a landmark in the late 80's grindcore scene, like with Napalm Death, Carcass, and Repulsion. It also features members of Morbid Angel and Napalm Death as well. This is what real grind is about. Downtuned guitars, crust punk related riffs, and pure insanity. Buy or consider yourself not worthy!
AN EXCELLENT GRIND ALBUM. SEMINAL. TERRORIZER ARE REUNITING---NEW DISC ON CENTURY MEDIA!!!.......2006-01-07
Truthfully, this album is one of the illest grindcore or otherwise albums released in the history of heavy music. The lead in to After War Obliteration just kicks your @ss in, and it is on to nihility from there. I really can't verbalize how good this album is. Sandoval kills it on the drums and the riffs are hooky and superb as well. One of the greatest parts about this album is it's ability to cross over. I am not a huge fan of grindcore, I do like Napalm Death, Repulsion, Carcass, and Black Army Jacket, and LOVE intersparsed blastbeats. However, sometimes I find some grind just plain old rehashed. I mean there is a blueprint whether you would like to admit it or not. Blastbeat, poor production, and a guy shouting like he is deaf. The cool thing about this album is the rawness, it kind of reminds me of Beneath the Remains era Sepultura. You have heard grindcore like this because it has been copied, the great thing about this is it's seminal nature. It was one of the FIRST grind albums. Another cool thing is the hooky, and often groove laden aspect of this album. it just kills from start to finish. Also worth of mention is the fact that this clocks in @ just under 40 minutes which is just about the minimum length I like an album to be. The cover art is cool and makes for an excellent T shirt print. This has got to be one of the top 10 all time albums for me and would definitely be a superb specimen to represent the grind genre. It never gets old. NEVER. I got into this album only 3 months ago, and I am sort of glad I did not back in 87 instead. I feel I would have taken it for granted, as well as kept on looking for albums to match it until today. I really think that older grind is better grind and it's simplicity should not be held against today's grind. If you dig Napalm, or go out and buy this, don't sleep on Repulsion's Horrified. Relapse did a nice job on the 2 disc (the demo's are actually listenable!!!) version of thier only album with liner notes and packaging and the price is good too. These albums contain the realness and should not be slept on. GRIND!!!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent album by an underrated band.......2001-12-31
This album does tend to grow on you as you listen to it a few times, indicating that it is more complex than your average metal recording. This is the third album from this group I bought, first was Through the Darkest Hour, then Adagio, then this one. I'd have to say Darkest Hour is the best of the three, but this one is a close second. Both show off the power of the vocalist - in my opinion, one of the best singers since Ronny James Dio. He has quite a range and is able to sing with feelings and power. The guitar work is mostly chords, but like Darkest Hour, there is enough solo work and other variations to prove the skill of the guitarist. The whole band works well together, and creates a set of melancholy but powerful songs that stand the test of time. No cliches in any of them.
My biggest disappointment is with the recording quality. Adagio is the best recorded of the three, with immense drums and ferocious guitar sound. This album sounds like it was recorded in a really cheap studio because everything is kind of dull, with no dynamic range at all and poor clarity. Of course, Solitude probably didn't have the money to burn on a high quality studio since they weren't well known, or at least weren't well played! I was lucky enough to hear them once or twice on DirecTV.
I read an interview with the guitarist and he said the other guys in the band all have day jobs so they don't tour much and it takes a while for them to make a CD. My advice to them - quit your jobs, make a new CD with no filler (like parts of Adagio) and good sound, and prepare to take over the metal world. These guys could be stars.
Epic Doom.......2001-01-26
Solitude Aeturnus is not a gothic metal band (recent gothic metal bands include Theatre of Tragedy and Tristania), but is rather a doom metal band inspired by the likes of Candlemass, Electric Wizard, and of course Black Sabbath. Themes deal with isolation ("These are the Nameless"), religion ("Chapel of Burning"), and melancholy states ("Concern"). Some of the songs are even inspired by Edgar Allan Poe ["Only This (And Nothing More)" is a reference to Poe's poem "The Raven"]. Musicwise, the bass takes center stage, with the guitar work complementing the low notes. The tempo is slow, sardonic, and at times even plodding. If you like doom metal, you will enjoy this band.
Melodic Goth Metal.......1999-06-30
I bought this album a couple years ago. I listened to it once and it bored me. More recently, while I was angry with all of my CDs that suck, I decided to give them another try. I was surprised to notice that it is actually very good. It has a sort of eighties metal feel to it, but it is definite goth metal. It is the kind of album that grows on you alot after you've heard it a few times. It is much more melodic and mature than their older stuff. For some reason it reminds me of Paradise Lost and Iced Earth... or does it?

Up there with the rest.......2007-05-31
A really fine album, is up there with the rest of the new Scandinavian metal bands, proving that over the last few years Northern Europe IS the new driving force that rejuvenated the whole metal scene.
OK... they are not Nightwish, and there are some other similar bands that I prefer more (Tristania, Leave's Eyes, Therion). But the whole album is good and there are 2-3 tracks that stand out. And "My Mind's Eye" truly is a "hitter"!

An unfortunate purchasing mistake?-No- i don`t think so!.......2006-05-20
Only one review? , only one star?
Be aware to the gathering from the early YEARS. The sound quality could be better but i enjoyed this album , and found great materials ("downfall " for example . i wish they would record it in new edition with all the other tracks). " THE GATHERING DEMO WAS REQUESTED BY MANY PEOPLE " AND " THE GATHERING WHERE PLAYING , IN THOSE YEARS, AS SUPPORT ACT TO PARADISE LOST ( SHADES OF GOD ERA ) " .
An unfortunate purchasing mistake.......2006-02-21
I greatly enjoy the Gathering's music beginning with Mandylion and continuing up to the present. So when I saw this in a record store I was intrigued because I had not heard anything the Gathering had done before adding Anneke van Giersbergen to the band. Let me help you out and say that if you love the Gathering at least partially because of Anneke, avoid this set of early works. Also, if you take pleasure in doom metal, listening to groups such as My Dying Bride, Anathema, Amorphis, November's Doom, etc. then please do not be tricked into buying this regrettable collection because I believe you will be deeply disappointed. The case had a sticker announcing that only 10,000 copies would be produced, and I should have taken that as a warning. There is good reason for limiting production, and even this number is insanely ambitious. The vocals are horrible and the music is mostly dull. It surprises me that any of the people on this CD could also be members of the Gathering today, but however unlikely I suppose that must be true. I don't want to be overly harsh because the Gathering have certainly discovered a different voice since excreting this rubbish. Thankfully they have improved so much so as to be unrecognizable from what we can hear on this disc. Stick with the Anneke-era albums (may it continue indefinitely) and experience the wonderful contributions the band has given for our musical pleasure. But beware this assortment of trash and spend your money, hard-earned or otherwise, on their later albums.

Product Description
Whimsical, wintery non-denominational holiday EP. Snow is My Downfall was actually written 5 years ago by Patti Rothberg and performed live at Glen Burtnick's holiday show at the Bottom Line, NYC with keyboardist Tom Brislin (of "Spiraling"). Tom and Patti agreed to record this frosty gem right afterwards, but tours with Yes and Meatloaf kept Tom out of reach, and Patti was busy recording her full length CD, Candelabra Cadabra (also available on CD baby). Although Tom makes many star appearances on the CD, the SNOW EP seemed destined to be put on the back burner. (5 months before the holidays each year Patti tried and tried again but missed the deadline, and couldn't locate Tom in time. Finally, here it is! Wouldn't you like to hear it finally!?
