Captured on this one disc are the great film scores Bernard Herrmann did for several classic science fiction films of the '50s and '60s. Herrmann did not go in for simple atmospherics and cheap orchestral tricks with his music. He knew that the music would have to conjure a mental world all its own. This is especially true in "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad". It's a tone poem Rimsky-Korsakov could have written. The best here is "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with its use of the (then) revolutionary theremin. It's a clear masterpiece, all on its own. --Paul Cook

The other essential Herrmann CD.......2004-08-25
I like to think of this CD as being the "Forbidden Planet" of film scores CDs -- technically marvelous, consistently enthralling on an emotional and mental level, and way ahead of its time.
Unfortunately it is not available as I write this. Last time I visited this Amazon site, there was one CD for sale for almost $60. You'll have to make up your own mind if this music is worth that much to you. I made my choice long ago to own this and keep it in my library, conceivably forever.
With five film scores, 35 tracks and 72 minutes of the most high grade science fiction music, this CD should be considered the definitive source for Bernard Herrmann's non-Hitchcock film scores. Not only did he conduct the National Philharmonic Orchestra in these recordings, the composer approved of the Phase 4 recording and mixing. It is, as the notes say, a unique listening experience.
I have found this CD to be a constant source of imagination, vision and scope in film music that still has no peer 30 years after its production. The opening sequence to "Journey To The Center of the Earth" is better than it ever was in the theater, where the music was a hackneyed backdrop to an incredilbe film. In this CD, the music dwarfs the film action.
My favorite sequence in this issue is Herrmann's work for the Ray Bradbury novella "Fahrenheit 451", which was recast in some minds recently when "Fahrenheit 911" appeared in theaters throughout the country.
Every bit of the miracle of that little film is projected through this eerily wonderful music, which seems to comprise a world of its own. The sections help recall Sontag's first trip on the fire engine, the bedroom fire and the finale.
The lengthiest tract on this disk is the near 27 minute set from the film "Gulliver's Travels". I've never seen the movie but will attest that the music is out of this world in a very British way. This section seems closer to following the musical rules for a suite than any other on this disk.
Decca had the good sense to return the Bernard Herrmann-conducted Hitchcock scores to circulation, so maybe they will do the same with this miraculous disk. Again, the notes are nothing to write home about, but even with that considered no lover of film music or the music of Bernard Herrmann can consider their library complete without this disk.

A Classic.......2006-01-01
I bought this when it came out; heard Flying Guillotine on the radio (KFJC, of course) and had to find out more about this crazed guitarist. So it's been a decade and I'm still a rabid fan but this has got to be one of his most mixed efforts, but is still essentially successful. All the songs are structured the same (which is somewhat tedious); some are wildly successful while others are less so. That said, I do listen to this CD frequently - and more frequently than most other Buckethead music.
Any fan of Buckethead's must posess this CD, however. It might not be what I recommend as an introduction to Buckethead, but it is serious music from a serious musician for serious listeners.
BucketHead is god.......2003-09-23
I got this a few years ago expecting another Monsters & Robots. Then again, I had only gotten into BucketHead in mid/late 1999, and only had M&R and Colma. When I got it, it blew my mind how different, yet still amazing it was. Day of the Robot starts out with about a minute's worth of a slow preparation. Then it gets right into kicking your ass. The shredding and the pounding of the drums gets you energized. Actually, the first track is just downright awesome. Then again, this whole CD is. Electric Charge must be destroyed at all costs, and only BucketHead can do it.
This CD covers the battle between the two, and it's quite a fight, even if there's no lyrics. It doesn't need any. This is some of BucketHead's top work. I put it behind only the likes of Colma and BucketHeadLand. There's just a few slight areas where this drags, but it kicks back in at the drop of a hat. The freakin' awesome bass on Collision is an example of this.
Get Day of the Robot whenever you see it. It's getting harder and harder to find. Heck, get an extra copy even if you have one. Make sure nothing ever happens to it. This is a holy album. And yes, that is a "Star Spangled Banner" bit in the last moments of the album.
Thank you for saving us from Electric Charge BucketHead. If I ever get to meet you, I'll give you a happy doggie sticker.
can electric charge be destroyed???.......2002-07-21
Day of the Robot is quite a digression from Buckethead's other work, to be sure. However, as an owner of both Day of the Robot and Monsters and Robots, I personally find it a welcome change. Buckethead's talents lie more in his guitar playing than in his musical creativity. I found Monsters and Robots to be a mediocre album at best; the songs ranged from monotonous to just plain stupid, with a couple of decent songs thrown into the mix. Day of the Robot takes Buckethead's skill as a guitarist and combines it with the skill of two talented musicians, Bill Laswell and dj Ninj. Ninj's beats are amazing; his complex drum loops are meticulously planned and complement Buckethead's erratic playing style beautifully. If you want a CD that showcases Buckethead's guitar playing than one of his other CDs would probably suit you better. If, however, you are more a fan of techno/d&b you should check out this album. Oh by the way, does anybody else hear 1) the theme to Super Mario Bros. during the intro synth solo to Quantum Crash and/or 2) the Star-Spangled Banner a la Hendrix during the guitar solo to Caution Drop or am I just hallucinating?
WEAK!???! ARE YOU INSANE!??!.......2002-03-02
This CD was a very big transition for Buckethead. The evolution of his solo CDs reflected what he was doing at the time. As all know The Bucket is heavily connected to Bill Laswell, who dabbles in dubs and techno music along with his own ambient style that so well meshed with Buckethead in the numerous Praxis albums. As Buckethead used less and less clip dubs and more and more machine produced beats rather than live drums his music curved heavily. Listen to Giant Robot and then listen to Day of the Robot. The evolution from trying to tell a story to playing a song, by The Buckets definition of one atleast, has begun but is stil not complete. The five tracks are not actually five tracks, that is the disjoining thing about this album, they are several tracks loosely connected but only by electronic music and have strange new guitar added to them. Songs do seem to drag at points but only because they change so much they do not seem coherent. Overall this CD is awesome, it does have a few flaws but what CD doesn't? This CD is well produced and the musical quality is awesome compared to some of his older stuff that seem heavily remastered and faint, or in some cases hazy and acratchy- this CD has none of that! Get this CD if you like Monsters and Robots alot, or if you like Giant Robot at all you are good to get this CD as well. Farewll fellow Bucket loyalists happy listening!
