Racer X is great but Superheroes... not so much.......2004-10-12
My first Racer X cd was Technical Difficulties, a record i feel defines what it means to rock. Being completely satisfied with my purchase I went to read some buyer's reviews of their other albums on amazon. I decided that Second Heat would be my next purchase, but i stumbled upon "Superheroes" in a record store and decided "hey why not just get this one since its here". My first listen was very disappointing, but i know one must offer recordings numerous listens before a review can be accurate. This record seriously did not live up to my expectations for Racer X. It seems like Paul tried to fit a guitar solo in anywhere he could, none of them offering the interest and excitement that I heard on "T.D." (ex. his entrance on "G-d of the Sun"). The songwriting seems to have been overlooked, instead to offer screeching castrati treble from Jeff Martin, compiled with 32nds notes from Paul. The lyrics on this are absolutely ridiculous."It ain't good for my heart to be Mad At The World... Mad at the worleerld... so mad, so mad, Mad at the World." and "Are ya evil? Evil JOE!" I mean... c'mon. I guess that works in Japan though because they dont speak english. I remain a huge Racer X fan, but to pay over $16 bucks for a cd I expect a little more for the money. But hey thats just my opinion, buy it if you want and hopefully it works out better for you.
An explosive sequel to "Technical Difficulties".......2004-02-24
From hard rock, to metal, to blues... Paul Gilbert has covered it all, and he's brought that versatility into this album. I might even say "Superheroes is like a box of chocolates..." You never know what you are going to get.
Let me pull a few examples here. Songs like Mad at the World would sit well in a power rock/ballad category (recognize that melody from Mr. Big - My Kinda Woman?), but metal instrumentals such as Viking Kong and King of Monsters belong in a category of their own. Bluesy tunes, O.H.B. and That Hormone Thing, and pure out sheer hard rock tunes like Dead Man's Shoes would NEVER mix will in a record... right? Wrong! Paul Gilbert did it all - and even threw in a Racer X interpretation of the Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla," with the guitars tuned an octave down and the vocals pushed an octave UP from the original recording.
Big fan of metal? The title track is as heavy as it gets, with screaming Halford-like lyrics pushed out in front and flashy stampeding guitar-work that will FLATTEN YOU if you're not careful!
Even though the songs are quite seperate in category, Paul Gilbert manages to creatively bind them all together in a fashion where every song is equally enjoyable as the other. True Racer X fans and the lovers of hard rock and metal will not be disappointed with this release.
Metal at its best!.......2004-01-13
I had never heard Racer X back in the 80s. I liked some of the stuff that Paul Gilbert did in Mr. Big, but I always felt like he was holding back. There is no holding back with Racer X, Superheroes! Gilbert plays some ferocious licks. Check out Viking Kong, wow!!! Other awesome songs include Superheroes, track #2, and Godzilla (my favorite). Jeff Martin does some great singing on this one. This is metal that one must head bang to. Buy it, it rocks!
Top notch killer album.......2003-04-05
This is a truly great album with catchy hooks, great singing, and kickin riffs. I would recommend this to anyone who likes Metal and Shred
smokin.......2002-09-14
From the opening track, this album will blow your eardrums. Paul Gilbert at his best and back on track with speed riffs not heard in the last twenty years. Superheros is judas priest meets van halen, with a little tommy bolin, satriani and led zep thrown in...all except that this one has scott travis, the best drummer on the planet. This album is what metal should sound like. Buy this one! Actually buy a couple of copies and give them to the neighborhood kids.

Superheroes of metal - this is a blessing in EP disguise .......2005-12-26
What could one expect after Edguy's awesome, perfect and aggressive Hellfire Club? Well, the answer is a very un-Hellfire EP, where the songs are more melodic, experimental, varied and funny. But all that Edguy-ness is still here: inspired and effective songs, catchy choruses that make you hum-along, melodic but distinct guitarring, Tobi's unique voice and approach, and that Edguy sense of humour that seemed lost in the metal scene.
SUPERHEROES starts with a Batman-TV-series-theme-song-like bass intro and procedes to a purposefully exagerated melodramatic song on how superheroes don't cry for love. First time you hear the chorus, you sing it along. Still it's the weakest song in the EP. The epic version is just an interesting version without guitars and more melodrama from the pianos.
SPOOKS IN THE ATTIC is very Stratovarius but the Edguys made it evolve into a singalong chorus with happy keyboards and Tobi even added some David Lee Roth's "let's party and I'm crazy" vocals. A great song and the lyrics are awesome.
BLESSING IN DISGUISE is very introspective, atmospheric, almost depressing, but as it grows into a powerful, gigantic chorus your hope starts to grow, and that hooky, ballad-like solo extracts tears from your eyes. Wonderful.
JUDAS AT THE OPERA has Tobi and Michael Kiske singing together, thus it's the best song here, one of the best from Edguy and certainly Helloween's best song since the Keepers. Kiske is "kisking" ass in a song that has that feeling and happiness from the Keepers era, Edguy's funny and weird lyrics, Savatage's Chance-like epic choruses, a symphonic "solo" and some vocalizations and guitar changes reminiscent from classics such as Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. Did you get it?
THE SPIRIT is a great Magnun cover, but it sounds like an Edguy song. Hard to describe, but I imagine everyone camping, singing together in front of the fire. Wonderful and snappy chorus, a little bit sad but hopeful feeling. Great song.
Superheroes comes to prove that Edguy is today the best band in what is called melodic metal. When all other bands would just try to repeat Hellfire Club again or fail trying to get away from it, Edguy delivers another great metal piece that is totally un-Hellfire and perfect exactly because of that.
Nice and Fresh!!!.......2005-12-18
I didn't like "Hellfire Club" that much. In my opinion it was their weakest album to date like been there heard that etc. In my opinion "Vane Glory" is the top with theater of salvation and their first album following.
However, even though for this maxi single I listened that they changed a bit their style and became more commercial it seemd that the result was very good. All of the songs are very good except Blessing In Disguise which is mediocre, and they sound fresh and "new".
Superheroes --is a mid tempo song with a great riff and a catchy mellody. 10
Spooks in the attic --is also fantastic in a more faster tempo than Superheroes 10
Blessing in Disguise-- dont like this song that much but its not bad 6
Judas at the Opera --Has some operatic elements of Queen but its a nice and fast song the Edguy style 10
The Spirit-- Not exactly a ballad but a slower song with the chorus changing its rythm and tempo. Nice song and kinda different.
If their new album follows this "lighter" and more "rock" side of the maxi single I believe that they will do great. I don't wanna listen to anogher Hellfire Club and listening something a bit different made me happy about this super talented band.
If not from Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Stratovarius, Dream Theater and a little bit of Nightwish who let me down with their latest release I expect a lot from Tobbias and crew!!!
Way Better than Expected.......2005-12-02
I was a little worried about this before it came out because I wasn't impressed with their last effort "Hellfire Club". I mean it had it's moments but as an album as a whole I didn't care for. Nowhere near "Theater of Salvation" and/ or Vain Glory Opera and Mandrake. But in my opinion I figure all bands are entitled to at least one bad album so I decided to pick this up when it came out and I'm glad I did. I liked it alot from the 1st time I heard it, the title track "Superheroes" was stuck in my head all night as well as "Spooks in the Attic" and "Judas at the Opera". Too all you Edguy fans like me that was worried about where this band was going after the Hellfire release worry not this is definately worth picking up. Now I hope their 2006 album "Rocket Ride" will be this good.
It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No, It's Edguy!.......2005-11-03
I don't have all that many Edguy CDs, but, thanks to a friend of mine who's a very devoted fan, I've heard plenty of songs from their catalog.
Having said this, I can honestly say that "Superheroes" is, for lack of a better word, amazing! All the elements are here: catchy melodies, excellent musicianship, and the unmistakeable humor that only Toby could come up with. All of these factors meld together to form an EP that is, well, addictive. Once you hear it the first time, you'll hit the "Play" button again. It's rare for me to listen to a CD without skipping a track, but "Superheroes" is one of those rare acceptions.
It's difficult to pick a favorite track, so I'll pick two of them.
"Blessing in Disguise" is not your typical Edguy ballad. It has more depth than most of them and, in that regard, seems to harken back to earlier ballads like "When a Hero Cries." If any song on this EP were picked as a single, I would hope "Blessing in Disguise" would be considered.
"Judas at the Opera" is a mini-epic featuring Michael Kiske, formerly of Helloween, as a guest vocalist. It's not the first time Toby and Michael have worked together, and I imagine their friendship is the only reason Michael had anything to do with this song, given his views on metal these days. Still, the combination works very well, and the song itself can't be described in words. I _will say this much, though: "Judas at the Opera" is the heaviest song on the EP and rather catchy, too. You've been warned!
Even if you've never heard of Edguy, I think you'll enjoy "Superheroes" anyway. And if you buy this EP and like what you hear, buy their older material as well.
What are you waiting for? Buy "Superheroes" now! Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
Edguy rocks the house, opera house..........2005-10-19
Continuing in their effort of making first-class, worthwhile and must-buy singles and/or EP's, Edguy serves up Superheroes. Like 2004's King of Fools, Superheroes shows Edguy is far from finished, and have so much power in reserve that it's almost scary. What's even scarier is the title track isn't even the main attraction....
The title track "Superheroes" starts off the album, and while it's not the best Edguy song or single, it does its job well and energizes the listener ~ simply put, the track is just plain "fun". "Spooks in the Attic" is another playful, upbeat tune, with some of those goofy lyrics you'd expect from Edguy thrown in for good measure (Example: I'm a family kind of man, I've lately started number ten).
While the first two songs reveal Edguy's well-known silly side, there is nothing funny about the third track, "Blessing in Disguise". A slow, strong and serious song with a dynamite chorus, "Blessing in Disguise" has my vote for the best song on the EP. The song paints such a vivid narrative in my head it is downright frightening, and would make a killer video. Unfortunately, while I think the track is amazing, I just know it is doomed to become one of Edguy's most underrated songs ever (like "Frozen Candle" on Savage Poetry) because it is different that what one expects from Edguy.
Sammet and crew bounce back from the dark and dank with "Judas at the Opera". The harmony guitar solo that opens this song just screams Helloween Keepers-era, which is so appropriate considering Michael Kiske makes his appearance as a guest vocalist. Speaking of Kiske, I'm actually quite surprised he's even on this disc, considering his big "I'm no longer interested in the metal scene, I never fit into the metal community" statement he posted on the internet. Sammet must have flashed a big wad-o-cash to secure his participation, hehe.
Back to the song, Kiske and Sammet vocally battle back and fourth in this "mini-epic" that must be heard to believed. Honestly, when Sammet can throw in the word "french-fried" in the chorus and still make the song work, you know you got a winner. The album closes with "The Spirit" (which is surprisingly a Magnum cover), and the Epic Version of "Superheroes", which are good, but just seem like sprikles on an already richly iced cake.
Simply put, this is one of 2005 best euro metal releases despite the fact it's only a single/EP and appetizer to Edguy's new album Rocket Ride. In the end, for ten dollars, you're not gonna find a single/EP, let alone an album that gives you more bang for your buck.

Customer Reviews:
This is THE Racer X Album.......2006-10-14
I was amazed how much more time seemed to be put into writing some really decent songs; As usual, the musicianship is top notch; It's nice to see Paul doing all the guitars; The vocals, drums, and bass have never sounded better; These guys have put together a total package of songwriting and some serious shredding. The 2 instrumentals are 2 of the best moments, but I really liked 'Time Before the Sun'. I didn't think they had that one in them. Good stuff here....
Let the flaming begin.......2001-10-13
First, I've had a few emails with these guys and they really pushed this release as their "best yet." I've been a huge fan for 15 years (see my review of "Technical Difficulties"). Nothing would make me happier than to give this 5 stars or more. But I can't. I just can't.
Someone else said it first: This isn't "racer" material anymore. Jeff never sounded better, John is clearly the most adept bassist in the history of swirling, twirling bass gods, Scott makes the ground thunder, and Paul is...well, Paul has matured and gotten I think a little eccentric and... "Superheroes" shows it.
The title track is strong, and "Let The Spirit Fly" is among their best work. "King Of The Monsters" is a work of art, up there with "Scarified." "O.H.B." is fun and total rock and roll in its truest form. But while "Godzilla" might fit the theme of this recording (and the pix are hysterical; how can I hire John to host my New Year's Eve party?), it's not a strong tune regardless of whomever records it. Fun, yeah, maybe, but remember these are the guys who play Judas Priest's unreleased (until Halford's recent live album) "Heart Of A Lion" and make it rock so hard you can't help crying at how good it is and how much modern "rock" reeks in comparison. In the face of what I know Racer X can do, "Godzilla" is a cop-out.
I docked them a complete star for this grievous misjudgment. Racer X can do better than re-record weak 70's rock and older work by their own members. Maybe they've outgrown the "need for speed" and all the pyrotechnics of their groundbreaking, legendary shows in their youth, but they set standards they missed on this recording.
Sorry, everyone, but just because this is better than nearly everything else on Amazon.com doesn't mean it deserves to be praised as their best work ever. Yes, Jeff and John really did their best here, but Scott's slowing down -- understandably -- and Paul is clearly not putting his heart into this band now.
I hope they read this and understand that at least one fan respects them enough to call them on the carpet for not giving us their best work on this CD. But I look forward to the next release, hoping it's all about the music and not about appeasing what appears to be Paul's jaded apathy. Maybe I expect too much; they're only human after all, not really superheroes.
But maybe they'll prove me wrong on the next one. I'm betting they will. And that, folks, will REALLY make us happy.
Racer X Superheroes is music to my ears!.......2001-07-17
Having anticipated the arrival of my Racer X "Superheroes" cd for several weeks (import delays) I gotta say this is the best music I've heard in the last 3 years. As if "Technical Difficulties" wasn't a great cd, "Superheroes" has Racer X sounding their best ever! The fans in Japan must be happy to have an advantage (so it seems) to such great Racer X music. When I heard those opening lines to "Godzilla", I knew I was in for a treat! Paul Gilbert has never sounded better and his guitar tone is matched by very few players. Wonderfully fearsome music - those Racer X boys are at the top of their game!!
Best Overall Rock Album in Years.......2001-06-22
Racer X is truly back with this spine tingling CD. This is DEFINITELY one of those CD's you take on that "desert island." Paul, Jeff, Scott and John are back, and better than ever. Great song writing, meaningful songs, with top notch musicianship.
Hightlights include, an amazing redo of Godzilla, Dead Man's Shoes and Viking Kong (for you guitar freaks). Paul Gilbert is deadlier and faster than ever.
...
Deserves 10 stars.......2001-06-21
This CD is unbelievable ... the best CD Racer X has ever released. The title track absolutely cooks and they don't let up from there. I saw them at the Whisky last month - incredible show (can't wait to get the live CD/DVD). Paul's guitar work on this CD is, as always, truly terrifying.

Edguy just keeps getting better!.......2005-10-02
I've been a devoted fan of Edguy's music for a little over 4 years now. I have all of their CDs, as well as Tobias Sammet's two Avantasia discs, and I can only think of a couple of songs in the entire Edguy catalogue that I don't particularly care for, and even those songs arent' completely unlistenable. With that being said, I feel that the Superheroes EP features some of Edguy's best music to date. The very first time I heard the EP, I thought to myself that the songs were great, but they just didn't seem to have the Edguy sound that I was used to. That's definitely not a putdown, it's just that the CD wasn't what I was expecting. However, since I never know what to expect upon first hearing a new Edguy release, I got over my initial bewilderment fairly quickly.
Simply put, I firmly believe that this is the CD that will allow Edguy to earn the recognition they so richly deserve here in the US. With the possible exception of "Judas at the Opera," I can honestly imagine American radio stations playing all the songs on this discs, especially "Blessing in Disguise" and either version of the tital track. While I really love all the songs on this CD, "Judas at the Opera" is by far my favorite. It's a fun song, and is most similar to songs Edguy has done in the past. Plus, it features guest vocals from former Helloween lead singer Michael Kiske, which is a real treat in itself.
Bottom line: this CD is a must have for any hard rock fan, whether you're familiar with Edguy or not. Even if you're not a fan of metal music, I'd be willing to bet that the great melodies and harmonies on this disc will convert you into an Edguy fan. Buy this CD, and you definitely won't be disappointed. Also, keep your ears tuned to your local pop/rock radio stations; I sincerely hope that "Superheroes" will be getting some airplay within the next month or so.
