5 out of 5 stars Very Dark Sort of Ambient and NOT!.......2003-05-09

This was the first Controlled Bleeding CD I purchased. At first, I did not like it much. I was thinking, "Another English band of really trippy space-cadets". Well that was last year when this title was released. I kept coming back to it. I like dark stuff... experimental and trippy, but this recording had no "hook" to it until I put the song, "Here Come the Warm Jets " onto one of my mix tapes. It actually has a beat to it and it is on the hard side in flavor... but it is infectious! I put it right after the live version of Saucerful of Secrets by Pink Floyd. I had already recorded more than half the CD already on other dark mixes for my somber car rides alone. Most the songs have no real beat pursay, but fits a gothic definition in a way. Darn if this is intellegent, well-planed improvization and experimentation with tone, texture and "closing" space. You will have to hear it to understand what I mean by closing space.

Next to Between Tides, this is their best record! I think it is fair that there is no deception about what this music is. It is strange, eerie, mood enhanced dark-joy of musical experimentation!

I fear that this band is done. I hope not. They will NEVER fit into a mainstream category but this is a very intellengent work of Dark Ambient Space rock. Excellent spin!

The Smell of Rain by Mortiis arrives at a rather strange time. Although the vast majority of music lovers have abandoned black eyeliner, fringed jackets, cowboy hats, and flour makeup along with their old Sisters of Mercy and Fields of the Nephilim records, Norway's Mortiis is at the vanguard of nü-goth, or "darkwave," as it is now known. But instead of the usual trappings of leather trousers and bad crimping, Mortiis is renowned for his prosthetic nose and pointed ears, casting him halfway between a troll and Mr. Spock. Which is quite possibly why the opening track on his fourth album is called "Scar Trek/Parasite God." Looks aside, Mortiis's transformation from his suspect beginning as an extreme metal musician to this hugely accessible pop creation is profound. Having discovered the virtue of tunes, he's crammed The Smell of Rain with pounding melodies that bring to mind everyone from Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails through to the chanting choirs of Enigma. With the MTV-friendly likes of "Parasite God," "You Put a Hex On Me," and "Smell the Witch" casting their industrial spell, Mortiis could soon find himself a superstar on the alternative scene. --William Luff

    Album Description

New album on Earache Records from Norwegian black metal pioneer, Mortiis delves into darkwave & pop sounds to create a dark, atmospheric infectious album reminiscent of Skinny Puppy, New Order, Enigma & Moby.

    5 out of 5 stars Different........2007-06-22

Trollrocker Mortiis, formerly of the black metal giants Emperor, comes in a whole different kind of swing with this bizaar album that evokes elements of coldwave industrial metal, synthpop, and new age. It's kind of like taking musicians like Nine Inch Nails, Enigma, Depeche Mode, and movies like Legend, and Lord Of The Rings, and than throwing them all into a blender. Whala! The result is Smell Of Rain. I think this is a verry creative album that enetertains the heck out of me. This is nothing like Mortiis's prior solo albums that had hardley any vocals...there is lots of singing on this album. Sadley, Mortiis tried to repeat this album with The Grudge and failed miserably. Nevertheless, Smell Of Rain is a cool CD. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars THE CHILD DEVIANT.......2006-12-15

There are plenty of people out there who just don't get it. Indeed, Mortiis, is a freak!!!!! Indeed, he is a huge NIN fan, and has never denied that NIN inspired him to make this album. This is not to say that 'The Smell Of Rain' is a NIN rip-off....because Mortiis is too creative to dismiss as a copy cat artist. First of all, a little history, ..Mortiis hails from Norway, home of the infamous "Satanic Mafia", and the greatest black metal bands in the world. Mortiis, a founding member of the ultra black metal band -Emperor- suddenly went an entirely different direction as a musician. Prior to 'Smell Of Rain', his albums 'Stargate', and 'Crypt Of The Wizard', are the musical combination of Vikings/Elves/Trolls/Witches/and warlocks. Think of films such as Legend, and Lord Of The Rings. Than comes 'Smell Of Rain', and people are shocked off their a**!! This album is loaded with vocals, synthy dance beats, and progressive industrial rock. My absolute favourite songs are "Parasite God", "Everyone Leaves", and "Smell The Witch". If your new to Mortiis, and your a fan of NIN...try this one out. Its's quite entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Everything dies in the end..........2006-05-09

Smell The Rain is a classic album, and a showcase for Mortiis's versatility.

Rain gives us everything from driving industrial, such as Flux/Mental Maelstrom, with its 'machine gun' bass/guitar line, to hauntingly beautiful gothic ballads such as Everyone Leaves.

He is so highly regarded in his native Norway that the album The Grudge is carried by libraries as a government requirement, based on its cultural value.

Yes, he's gone heavy folks, and he's done it with style.

5 out of 5 stars What an old school combination with dark and goth elements..........2006-02-21

Well, well... that's a true dark and goth combination with darkwave...synth pop... Industrial guitars...80s new wave... and a few of freestyle!!! Nice combination!!!! Mortiis rules!!! the past CDs are more dark ambient and medieval style (awesome past CDs too...) but this CD is a nice piece of art!!! Mortiis have a great mind...!!! I recommend this CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Mortiis put a hex on me..........2005-06-07

I know there are a lot of people who question Mortiis' artistic decisions. There are many reasons for this.
    1) He's gone from playing black metal to ambient to industrial
    2) Many industrial fans consider his music to be too "heavy" for their liking
    3) His image - stupid, I know - but he does look sort of strange

However, I'm just going to say this. Mortiis is a GENIUS! If you can't see it that's your problem - but coming from a fan of such bands as Wolfsheim, And One and Apoptygma Berzerk - Mortiis is really a breath of fresh air for the genre.

Needless to say, this music is far away from what he did on his first few albums (Hence the Mortiis: Era 2 logo on the cover). In any ordinary case you'd expect fans to whine (see: Theatre of Tragedy) but not so here. The dude is so flexible - he masters everything he does, or so it seems.

The songs on The Smell of Rain are actually not too far apart from what Trent Reznor did on the older NIN albums. And it isn't surprising that Mortiis lists NIN as one of his top influences, alongside such names as Skinny Puppy, the Sisters of Mercy, Enigma and Aphex Twin. But it's the use of Sarah Jezebel Deva's operatic vocals and the occasional blaring riffs that set him apart from the genre.

Vocally, he doesn't offer much of a range - which is fine if the synths take a dynamic path of their own, and that is the case. Some songs will go from dancepop to darkwave to some strange operatic/guitar duet that leaves an epic feeling to the disc. I'd say highlights for me are the groovy "Scar Trek/Parasite God", the psychedelic "Spirit in a Vacuum", the catchy-as-hell "You Put a Hex on Me", the oddly beautiful "Everyone Leaves" and the danceable "Marshland". Humorous moments are thrown throughout the album as well just to spice things up.

All in all, this is industrial done right. Recommended if you're into this sort of thing, and if you're not, then maybe Mortiis' the Smell of Rain would make a good first purchase.

      5 out of 5 stars Great find!.......2006-09-23

Great album with many solid songs! I play it all the time. I was initially attracted to Katy's voice, but the songwriting is very good, with considerable variety. These songs have staying power, getting better with wear. No trite pop lyrics, but they deal with varying themes in a variety of moods, from playful to contemplative. Some of the best songs include "Trouble and Sorrow" and "The Day that I Die" (obviously these aren't the "playful" songs). I can't wait for her next album.

5 out of 5 stars Smell of Success.......2006-06-14

      4 out of 5 stars A synth-goth-metal-indutrial delight.......2005-01-06

Yes, I just called a Mortiis album delightful. it sounds like something I would have listened to back whe I was first discovering Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Ministry, Depeche Mode and all that goes with listening to those artists. Mortiis did an excellent job capturing not only a "sound", but an "era". It works, maybe not for his "death metal" fans, but definatly for fans of goth.

5 out of 5 stars A Nine Inch Nails for the new millennium.......2004-08-16

Well, this album was quite unexpected. If you're familiar with Mortiis' previous works, you may be expecting this to be another album full of dark dungeon ambience. Oh how wrong you would be. Mortiis' last album, Stargate, hinted at his desire to bring in more synths and electronic music into his work, but nobody could have predicted this. He took a wild leap into new territory, a kind of electronic-industrial goth. It's difficult to classify, an album as unique as the man... err, troll, who made it.
And what a leap. His previous works were for a niche market at best, had to be taken with a pinch of salt, but this is the kind of music you can put on and get your friends dancing to. Just so long as you don't show them the guy who made it. A more traditional song structure, clear-cutting vocals, lyrics so angsty they put Linkin Park to shame. It's extremely reminiscent of early Nine Inch Nails (Reznor himself has proclaimed a great joy for Mortiis' recent works), though with a slight aura of innocence or naivety to it. The whole thing works extremely well, it appeals to a large cross-section of audiences, and has more than enough catchy tunes to bring in new listeners.
Content-wise, despite being only nine tracks, this album more than delivers. Out of the nine, I would only consider two of them as filler material, and even they are hardly tracks you're likely to skip past after the first listening. The opening track Scar Trek/Parasite God is a stunning opener, filled with more atmosphere than the planet Druidia. Spirit In A Vacuum is a track reminiscent of Sisters of Mercy in their hayday, which is one hell of a compliment, and it's almost criminal that this song never ended up being released as a single. Everyone Leaves is a song that will bring some people to tears with the stark truth layed out by Mortiis' unusually innocent voice. Marshland will have you humming that chorus for weeks to come. And Smell The Witch, well, what more needs to be said by a song with such a title? It's a great bit of fun and a fantastic finish to one of the best albums of the decade thus far.
If you buy the special edition, you'll get a DVD with the music video to Parasite God too, which is a neat bonus, though the video is sadly nothing to write home about. They could have at least thrown the Mental Maelstrom video on there as well. But still, it's a free bonus, so I won't dock marks for it.
Overall, if you have any interest in dance, industrial, electronic or goth music, seek this album out, and you'll love it a long time.

      5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2002-12-02
