All good but..........2002-10-30

The first 7 titles rock and want to be one-hit wonders.Now I want to hear a ballad and we get Out of the Blue, a sure-hit, mellow rock song and Calling St. Cicilia, a mellow ballad; and up to this point this is a nice disc. But then Mr. E puts this jazzy tune in and a funky blues song about some guitarist he adores and the whole arrangement falls to pieces. The last two songs will take you far away from the rock and because of those 2 misfits I can't see any better than 3 stars for this compilation.

Outstanding is just a word. I don't know if it can really describe how glad I am that I bought this CD. I've been a longtime fan of Rik's since the early days of Triumph. Saddened by their breakup, I rejoiced when Rik first released Absoloutely back in... 90? I loved every track of it. I puchased Spiral notebook after running across it in 1998, thinking it was the only other album he had made, and was pretty happy with it but always wished there was more. So now (June 99) I've gotten a computer and behold, the internet tells me that there are 4 more Rik albums. So I bought all 4, listened to this one first, and loved it immediately. I'll review the others when I've heard em. ENJOY!!!!

Tony has a special gift for connecting heart felt feelings to gospel truth. The song, "Why?" pierces through the noise and confusion of life and allows us to see what is really going on from a higher plain. Songs like "Found,"Lisa's "Prayer",and "Our Father" make you realize how personally God desires to know each of His creation.

And, from a vocal standpoint, there is no better crooner anywhere! I highly recommend By Chance!

I`ve been an avid fan of Cam Newton`s music for more than 20 years and eagerly await his latest recordings. So I`m excited to see that Summit Records has released its second album by Mr. Newton, the wonderfully gifted and original composer/guitarist from Portland, Oregon. As one who has enjoyed not only his previous recordings but also many of his scintillating live performances, I can happily say "Ipso Facto" captures the exuberance and spirit of those shows, as well as Mr. Newton`s compositional genius. It`s yet another superb offering from a unique and very talented musician---an artistic and aural delight.

Expansive Amplitude.......2002-12-15

I suppose you could call Cam Newton's Ipso Facto a jazz album, but one, like in a good curry, with many flavors, a sophisticated yet surprisingly accessible mix of American jazz and pop with Brazilian beats and world folk music. Newton's guitar virtuosity anchors the music--not, as the metaphor suggests, with weight and gravity, but with dynamism, finesse, and agility, sometimes on top of, sometimes interwoven with, the magnificent playing of his fellow musicians. But technical virtuosity is not enough to recommend an album. Excepting the rare solipsist, most musicians want their audience to actively engage with their music, the best of which inspiring the listener's own creative response. When I listen to the songs on Ipso Facto, I start "seeing" things as the music becomes a soundtrack for motion pictures in my head: slow motion dancers cross the Grand Canyon on a swaying hammock while rain falls below on a flower-filled pup tent floating down a row of corn on a collision course with a freight train pulling trees waving at me from the surface of a perfectly still pool ...; you get the picture--maybe not mine--but the point is Ipso Facto is a capacious album that invites you into a beautiful and evocative aural landscape where your imagination can play like a child. And this is not just an invitation to the mind; it also gets under your skin, or into your heart, or wherever it is you feel things, with incredible emotional range--at times meditatively sweet (never saccharine) and languid ("Empty Rooms"); sometimes nimbly celebratory and dance-ready ("Morning of the Gypsy King"); and at others locomotively hard-driving and energetic ("The Splendid Amplitude Of It All"). Perhaps the last song title hints at the general feeling I have for Ipso Facto, an expansive amplitude and breadth of emotion, indeed.

It's not Triumph, but it's Rik.......2006-07-06

Rik continues to inspire me with his lyrics and amaze me with his guitar-playing. This is softer than most Triumph work, but if you like Hold On, Magic Power and Midsummer Daydream (the sensitive Triumph hits), you'll love this. Out of the Blue gives me chills. Bang On got me through a tough period in my life. I love you Rik!

A good overall album. Changes from his Triumph days, but a good change. Mellow album, easy to listen to and the voice still sounds good. I really like this album, and look forward to hearing more

This is a great CD. Triumph fans will surely like it. A lot of musical variety, great songs, great guitar work, and great vocals! In my opinion, this is some of Rik's best work.

Overproduced, but excellent.......2000-09-04

Coming from a long time fan of Triumph, this review may be a bit biased. I always felt that Rik was the strongest artist in the older band, and his solo career has only reinforced this belief. Rik shines with competent studio musicians! The only complaint that I have is that the drum (especially the cymbals) sonuds are canned, and detract slightly from the enjoyment of several songs.

This is one of the best records ever made. It has everything from really mellow to heavy metal. Every song is a great song. If you ever get the chance to see him live, Don't miss it. If you like good guitar playing don't miss a great record by a great guitarist and singer.
