Another Winner From Dark Moor.......2005-07-24
Recommended for fans of Rhapsody, Skylark, Edguy, Blind Guardian, Stratovarius and Gamma Ray.
This is another very good album from the Spanish epic metal band Dark Moor. At the time of this recording, they were fronted by a female vocalist -- which is unusual in this particular subgenre of metal.
Elisa's vocals are strong and the instrumentals are also truly beautiful. It is hard to make a "best of" list for this album, since every track is a highlight. Highlights among the highlights would include Nevermore, Starmaker, Night of the Age and Truth for Me.
It is hard to find fault with this CD. The only complaints I have with this nearly perfect recording (and they are minor) is that the tempo of the songs rarely varies and the drums seem to be too far forward in the mix. Still, this is a great recording from a great band.
Dark Moor - Gates of Oblivion.......2004-11-26
OHMYGOD! This album is incredible. Any Metal fan out there who has not yet listened to this band is missing out. I know that many Metal fans cringe at the thought of symphonic elements in heavy music, but this really rocks! This is Symphonic Power Metal at its finest. Great band, brilliant album!
NO! IT'S NOT YES!.......2003-09-03
I don't mean to be glib with my review title but these guys do sound eerily like Yes on some songs. Actually, these guys sound like a combination of Rhapsody, Yes and Therion. If you haven't heard some of these groups, that means they sound good.
The first time I heard Epic Power Metal. I thought, I could really get into this if they would slow down just a little, especially on the faster songs. I was listening to the self proclaimed "Hollywood Metal" of Rhapsody.
The reason I thought this, was that Rhapsody along with Dragonforce and a couple other groups play the percussion at machine gun speed. In fact it was so fast I'm wondering if it was computerized because I don't see how anyone could move their arms and legs that fast
Then I discovered some other groups that played similar music but at a slightly slower pace that would allow my overtaxed mind to absorb and appreciate the music. Now, everyone knows that a lot of Power Metal bands are from Italy but most of the bands I found which played at a tempo that was appropriate for my taste were from various other countries. There was Sonata Arctica from Finland, Dragonland from Sweden, Freedom Call from Germany, Kamelot from (surprise)U.S.A. and last but certainly not least, Dark Moor from Spain
The Spanish melodic power metal band's third release The Gates of Oblivion captivates the listener from the first track. Each song is a masterpiece of epic power metal with the support of an orchestra and a couple choirs. Dark Moor continues to combine thrilling arrangements and grand melodies with the ingredients of classic heroic epic power metal.
This album is an invitation to loose ones self in the music, each song is a highlight, a new world that comes upon the listener. When the song "By the strange path of destiny" is opened by the unbelievably beautiful voice of Elisa C. Martin, you melt away. That's right the singer is a woman. I was surprised too, her voice could easily be a man. In fact she sounds a lot like Jon Anderson. The Gates of Oblivion is almost 56 minutes of top shelf melodic power metal.

To bring you current the above three members have left Dark Moor and formed a new band with former members of the French power metal group, Heavenly. The new band is called Fairyland.

Holy crap!.......2003-06-21
Thisi album came out of nowhere and blew me away! I was already familiar with the more popular (stateside) powermetal bands like Guardian or Rhapsody, but this lesser-profile band is just as good as any of the big names! You can do no wrong with this album, everything is as it should be: epic songwriting, tight musicianship, and great production. There's not a whole lot to say; if you're familiar with power metal, you really need to get to know Dark Moor!
DELIGHTFUL,SIMPLY DELIGHTFUL.......2003-01-16
The Spanish melodic power metal band's latest release The Gates of Oblivion captivates the listener from the first track. Each song is a masterpiece of epic power metal. Dark Moor continues to combine thrilling arrangements and grand melodies with the ingredients of classic heroic epic power metal. I believe The Gates of Oblivion is one of the four best albums I have ever heard of this genre, the others being Hastings 1066 by Thy Majestie, Crystal Empire by Freedom Call and A Time Never Comes by Secret Spere. You may not have heard of any of these groups but trust me they are good.
Back to the cd at hand. This album is an invitation to loose oneself in the music, each song is a highlight, a new world that comes upon the listener. When the song "By the strange path of destiny" is opened by the unbelievably beautiful voice of Elisa Martin, you melt away. The Gates of Oblivion is almost 56 minutes of top shelf melodic power metal. Highly Reccomnded!

A delightful blast from 10 years past........2005-12-16
Just when it appears that what the majority of folks are considering melodeath is quickly going down the drain in a shower of catchy clean vocals, terribly used keyboard melodies, predictable song structures, and a veritable assault of overly used breakdowns; a pitiably small number of bands are diligently and more importantly skillfully fighting back against the trendy tide. Among these, hailing not from Sweden or Finland, are Coram Lethe. Taking a page out of the early 90s book and going back to a time when melodic death metal camped closer to the black metal camp than the hardcore one, these Italians are most definitely a band to be heard.
As always, the first thing my ears pick up on is the albums production; which is superb. You can clearly hear all the instruments including the bass guitar, which is all too often lost these days on metal albums. At the same time the production is not overdone as well. The guitars possess a delightful dirtiness to their sound that continues where the guitarists' tremolo picking, Mirco's high pitched screams and the drummer's love of blast beats left off in contributing to Coram Lethe's black metal stylings. The Francesco/Giacomo (Italian names are ever so cool) guitar duo also serve up delightfully thrashy riffs and even some tastefully used chugging; two things many metalcore duos use, but they use them badly.
But this is not all! Coram Lethe also ices their melodeath cake with a delicious touch of progression which, while not main factor of their sound, is something that will keep me coming back to the album. They litter the album with acoustic sections, a grand orchestral intro, and a soft interlude or two reminiscent of Opeth. Touches like this are what seperate the forgettable metal bands from the ones I would love to listen to over and over again.
I will leave you with this message: If you like your melodic death metal more death metal than melodic, full of tortured screeches, and with at least a trace of originality; then Coram Lethe most definitely stand up to the challenge of your tastes.
