5 out of 5 stars Very Peaceful and Relaxing.......2007-06-28

This music is very easy listening and very peaceful. It would be good music to meditate too, as well as just playing it around the house.

5 out of 5 stars Life-giving music.......2007-01-21

After I stumbled on "Returning" by Jennifer Berezan, a friend turned me on to "Praises for the World." This is truly a passionate recording of various voices and instruments. I feel connected to the energy of life and love when I listen to this. Have purchased it for other friends and they enjoy it very much. Keep on recording, Jennifer!

5 out of 5 stars Great for studying, meditating, or just relaxing!.......2005-11-14

The back cover of the CD says, "File under world music, new age, women's, healing, meditation, vocal, ambient." Any of those will do just fine, but in my collection, it goes under "when you have to relax!" It is a wonderfully relaxing hour or so of music, sure to carry you off to any tranquil corner of your mind that you like once you put it on and close your eyes. Replete with guest vocalists and nature sounds over a mellow guitar arpeggio, the songscape consists primarily of gentle repetitions of the title line. Only the first four minutes or so are outside of that mold, featuring a three-verse song of healing and love for the Earth, which then segues neatly into the main event. Later in the piece, Alice Walker recites her poem "We Have A Beautiful Mother" over the music. This might be a bit much for some listeners, but if not, you'll love the whole CD. Pleasant dreams!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely incredible.......2003-10-23

profoundly beautiful, dangerously addictive, marvelously uplifting, my favorite of Berezan's albums, and I have loved all of her work. The harmonies are celestial and hypnotic.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2003-08-31

I've given this CD along with "Returning" to friends and they love them too. Its a great CD - I find myself singing along, getting lost in the music and harmony. The CD is one long song that evolves and changes yet has "praises for the world" running through it as the undercurrent. Absolutely fanstastic.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Oh dear...they've taken their eye off the ball.......2007-01-08

This is not much like their first album (which was a mostly clever, sometimes ham-handed combination of operatic arias and modern electronic instrumentation).

But Shine is pretty much the same ethno-electronica that was pervasive throughout the 90s. Think Deep Forest, Anubian Nights, Enigma, B-Tribe, and even Sting's "Desert Rose". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Their first album was good mostly because of its orginality (operatic arias are definitely a challenge), but any old fool can slap a "cool" Middle Eastern chant over a modern beat.

What bugs me about both albums is that they don't maintain that singularly operatic quality--it seems to be a sonic delicacy reserved only for a few tracks.

So, with a very few exceptions, this album is a bit contrived.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful music.......2004-11-29

I would describe this music as a mellow and unusal mix of music where Enya meets Maria Callas, and I am a fan of both, so that's a good thing. It is so good that Billboard Music called it the best classical crossover of the year!

I would call this music techno opera scene from the future with beautiful opera singing, just to give you an idea of what this music is like! Also, the singer from the Fifth Element soundtrack, Inva Mula sings the song "Mon Amour".
Also singing on this cd is a singer named Shakila. She sings on "Kokab" and "Khodoya". These three are my favorite tracks. Though the cd in whole is a joy to listen to.

We'll say that "Operatica-Shine" succesfully bridged the Middle East to Europe via southern Spain.

So if you're a nu music dj, pick up this cd, so you can really spin an eclectc mix of music - Savannah Skye aka DJ Dakini-NYC...

4 out of 5 stars Better then R&B.......2004-04-16

My wife and I are always looking for new music to cuddle up to, while either watching the sunset, or getting a little heated. I think this album is a great replacement for Barry White, or some other R&B that people often equate with mood music.

These sounds will actually get your heart pounding and blood pumping without forcing you to constantly skip over songs that just get too rowdy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, yet not comparable to Diva Dance.......2004-03-12

Let me start out by saying that i love this cd. i bought it thinking that it would be like the song Diva Dance from the Fifth Element. It is most certainly one of my favorite cd's but it is nothing like the Diva Dance song. All of the tracks are much slower, focusing more on the opera part, as opposed to the techno/pop. i would still give this cd a splendid 4 out of 5 stars, but i would just like to get across the point that it doesn't have the type of songs that are advertised. thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Opera Today.......2003-08-24

I just bought Operatica:Shine. It is my favorite CD, I strongly recomend it to enyone who enjoys opera! If you like "THE DIVA DANCE" in The Fifth Element you will love this CD!

David Helpling's sophomore effort fulfills the promise of his first CD, Between Green and Blue. The guitarist is still influenced by Patrick O'Hearn, sharing the same penchant for smoldering, sensual rhythms and simple yet highly evocative melodies. He arranges it all on guitar and synthesizers, although it's often difficult to tell which is which. Helpling sends his guitar through a stream of effects and delays, using volume swells to mask its attack, turning his stringed instrument into an ambient orchestra. Across sequencer rhythm loops that sound like a pan-ethno drum troupe floating in space, Helpling layers surging synth pads draped with simple melodies that create a moody, cinematic expanse. Because he's a guitarist, Helpling has a natural sense of phrasing that eludes many keyboardists in this area of melodic electronics. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars sublime.......2007-02-26

For several years now, I have been playing this music to go to sleep to. My wife and I rely on it to usher us into dreamland each night. There are not many recordings out there that can serve do that! and it stands the test of time

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Music.......2006-10-27

This music has depth and beauty that I rarely get to experience, The musical ideas develop throughout each of the pieces as well as the album as a whole. The songs seems to spring from a well of energy and have an almost magical quality that keeps you relaxed, yet engaged, The pieces are melodic and rhythmic enough that you don't drift off into a mindless trance. This is excellent music to work to, the music keeps you energized and focused on your work. It also great to listen to if you want to sit down and enjoy an album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars A magnum opus .......2006-10-11

Brilliant album, one of the best new age albums ever recorded. The track #4 Divine Whisper is my favorite, an amazing song that is like a great story being told of a mysterious and grand journey.

I have listened to many new age and ambient albums, and this one ranks near the top. Almost every song is masterfully composed. It's a dark themed music with subtle and intricate melodies.

I don't know why this album doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves, but it's assuredly a landmark masterwork in new age music.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Put ..........2006-09-15

To avoid repeating the praises mentioned thus far, I'll just keep this short. Simply put, this is hands down, bar none, the most ELEGANT sounding CD I've ever heard in my life. I'm a huge ambient music fan and "Sleeping on the Edge of the World" continues to stand out in my library, and is among one of my all time favorites. I'll make sure they bury me with this one so I can take it with me to the great beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise in a dark unknown realm.......2005-01-27

David Helpling's sophomore follow-up to his debut album "Between Green and Blue" is a major artistic leap forward. Where as his first CD borrowed the 1980s keyboard styles of Patrick O'Hearn, on SOTEOTW, there is less of the O'Hearn influenced and a far more of a distinctive sound all of his own on this album.

The mix of dark moods in a positive sense is absolutely exotic and out of this world.

The dark mysterious journey through the foggy terrain begins with the eerie spiritually arousing opener entitled "Rain Falls". A dark and mysterious ambient intro begins which conveys the sense of a twilight drizzly cloudy evening and gradually builds up into an exotic track with a sound that is utterly distinctive style altogether. While it is somewhat O'Hearn influenced, this one finds Helpling with a style all of his own.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

5 out of 5 stars Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19

It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2005-03-20

I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

5 out of 5 stars Not for those who expect artists to do the same thing every time........2005-09-28

This was very different from Private Radio - not better or worse - just different. And equally amazing. Billy Bob Thornton is one of the most talented musicians out there today. People have criticized this album because it is so different from Private Radio. But I think that is why it should be praised. I respect the few artists who don't keep releasing the same stuff in different wrapping. Artists should constantly try new things. And people who can't handle that should to go back to reviewing their Top 40 repetitive mediocrities.

2 out of 5 stars What happened between 2001 and 2003?.......2004-02-09

Well, after listening to Billy Bob's previous CD, Private Radio (released 2001), this was quite a change.
I like Private Radio from the very first cut, and found the whole recording to be one I could listen to over and over again.
Perhaps it was the bare bones (but quite extremely fitting) arrangements and more intimate, introspective atmosphere of Private Radio that I half expected here.
Well, dispite (or maybe because of) the more elaborate production and overall polish of 2003's The Edge of the World, I just don't feel that Billy Bob was quite as comfortable and relaxed this time around. While I didn't notice the "ascend to pitch and descending last note" vocals in Private Radio, they're quite apparent here, particularly in the title cut (melody of which is reprised in "God").
Other observations:

Please tell me that's not a drum machine in the opening measures of "Fast Hearts."

A horn section at the intro and throughout "Everybody Lies"? Yes, it's a horn section. A HORN SECTION. Lord, step aside, Blood, Sweat & Tears. Billy Bob's comin' to Vegas.

Billy's band discovers acid for the lengthy opening of "Do God Wop," and passes the bong for the equally lengthy (and utterly pointless) spoken narrative/outro.

Either Billy Bob borrowed Cher's pitch correction software after she was finished using it for "Believe," or somebody has done something damn funky with Pro Tools digital editing, because held notes seem a bit too unnatural. (Note: for those who have no idea what pitch correction is, let me sum up my feelings on the matter: better for a human voice to be natural [albeit a few cents flat or sharp] that to sound like a robot [a la "Believe"]).

A sitar on "Edge of the World (Reprise)"? Billy Bob, come on, man!

Oh, I see: repeating the vocal melody throughout the album is artistic. Gotcha. Now I understand. Goes along with the "Part II" and "Reprise" thing. Right.

The studio musicians are most definately LA studio musicians. Oh, yeah. LA studio musicians.

Oh, yes, that IS pitch correction! Check out "Island Avenue": not only disgustingly obvious enough initially, but intentionally used for robotic effect on the words "In a monotone".

But, there are a few good points, folks: "The Desperate One" is a well-produced tune, without being overbearing. Harmonies are top-notch; Joe Walsh does some fine guitar work on "Pieces of a Man"; and "Midnight Train" and "To the End of Time/Edge of the World, Part II," without the way-overused pitch correction (though it's still there, for cryin' out loud), overproduction, horn sections and sitars, comes closest to conveying Billy Bob's voice and soul.

Yes, I was always told, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all," but when you take a blessedly unpolished, soulful songwriter/vocalist like Billy Bob Thornton, add musicians who know that this is a voice meant for acoustic guitars and maybe a little B-3 organ, keep the arrangements tastefully performed and musically supportive of such a voice, and allow the music and vocals to come forth naturally -- raw, unprocessed, and natural, ie: MUSICAL -- you end up with with darn good music that's a pleasure to listen to over and over again.

I truly hope Billy Bob Thornton keeps making albums. But, a return to the realness, the unpretentiousness, the unpolished would be a most welcome thing, indeed.
Drop the LA guys, the digital pitch correction and the horn sections, Billy Bob. Damn, son, a guitar, bass, drums and organ is what your voice and lyrics cry for. Get back to the real, the gritty, the passionate, the painful reality.
And leave the overproduction and pitch-correcting annoyances to Cher.

I know this has come off rough, but honesty ain't always pretty. And if I didn't appreciate Billy Bob's work as deeply as I do, well, I guess I'd just hold my tongue. It's because I admire his work so much that I can say that, in my humble struggling musician's opinion, he can do a heck of a lot better than The Edge of the World. Want proof? Listen to Private Radio. Then try to tell me that ain't real.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite!.......2003-10-10

A gem! Truly a gem! Billy Bob is the most vivid lyricist to come along in a long time. He deftly tackles the haunting questions that torment us in the night. This is music you can sit back and inhale.

5 out of 5 stars just a great rock and roll record with heart.......2003-10-09

I've had "The Edge of The World" for a couple of weeks now, and since I was anticipating it so much, I wanted to make sure that I gave it enough time to sink in so that I could write a fair review for it.

Well, everyone knows that Billy is a great actor and everyone knows what happens to most famous people who try to move into another area that their not already known for (they usually get slammed for it) , so I'm going to skip right through all of that and get on with what is really important here...THE MUSIC.

"Private Radio" was a very different move for an actor making a record. It had next to no radio appeal, no pop, and no commercialized videos with lush scenery to go along with the songs on CMT, but what it did have was an honesty and a realism that brought me back listen after compelling listen to the land of Waffle Houses, back porches, cotton fields and one night stands. THAT was an amazing record with more replay value than just about anything I've heard over the last five years. Truly remarkable.

Now, two years later, here we are at "The Edge Of The World". I wasn't qutie sure what to expect here, but I knew that this would be more rock oriented and there would be a loose story line. From the opening licks of "Emily" I knew that I was in for another treat. If all you know of Billy's singing is from "Private Radio" then this will blow you away. Frankly, it doesn't even sound like the same guy. On the last record everything was low and Cohenish, here he sings out and loud, backed by Michael Shipp's awesome guitar playing and a mighty fine band.

When "Emily" gives away to "Everybody Lies", you won't be surprised if Billy has a bonafide hit on his hands here. This is everything a great rock tune should be. It's just such a blast to listen to and the lyrics burn in deep. Now, with "Island Avenue", Billy had released this tune a couple of years back on a wildlife benefit cd called "Hollywood Goes Wild". It became one of my favorite songs and everyone I played it for loved it. Here, we're treated to a slightly different version which features back vocals by James Young and Tommy Shaw from Styx. Also, Michael Shipp's playing really shines through. It's another winner.

Now, I'm not going to go through all seventeen tracks here but I will say that with your first listen, by the time you have made it to the beautiful instrumental of "The Edge of The World" (reprise) you might agree that this is one of the most exciting and original albums of 2003 and see for yourself that Billy is indeed, the real deal. This is music about life, in a language that we can all identify with and understand.

Thank you Billy Bob!!! See you on Tour

5 out of 5 stars Billy Bob Thornton scores again!.......2003-10-05

And I thought PRIVATE RADIO couldn't be beaten.

To be true, this album isn't as steeped in despair as Thornton's first was. And when the openening licks of the (almost) commercialized "Emily" met my ears, followed by the (almost) commercialized "Everybody Lies", I wondered if Marty Stuart's absence (though not total; he does produce two tracks and co-wrote one) had made Thornton into nothing more than a country-music-star wannabe.

Then I got further into the album. "Island Avenue," the superb "The Desperate One," and "Everybody's Talking" brought back that old feeling, while adding something new and exciting: SOUND. No, they weren't all stoned when they made this CD (listening to PRIVATE RADIO, one gets that idea) but they were at their best, with or without narcotics. (I don't mean to say that drugs make you a better musician; I wouldn't know, don't care to find out, and don't advocate that others find out; let's just move on to avoid further awkwardness.)

This CD is a masterpiece. The title track is no despairing, you wonder just what the heck Thornton was thinking (and yet, there's an ironic "I'll-get-you-back" twist to it that makes you have to smile). "Pieces of a Man" follows that despair-ridden tone. "Savior" offers a bit of optimism (so does the previously-mentioned "Emily"), and "To The End of Time" closes out the album (not counting the unnecessary hidden [17th] track) with a positive attitude. And "Do God Wop", a remix of "God", asks some questions of the Good Lord that'll get you laughing our buttocks (yes, I avoided saying something else) off, and yet at the same time nodding your head at how much sense it makes; great do-wop backing vocals, by the way.

That's not all the songs; the rest are pretty good, too. And yes, there's a lot of downers here; hey, this guy's been through a lot, after all. Thornton wrote or co-wrote all but three of these songs; you could say this is, if not his life, then a period of it. The greatest surprises come in 1) the instrumental "The Edge of the World reprise" (Thornton on drums) and 2) the three-minute instrumental intro to "Do God Wop" (again, Thornton on drums). Shows a nice range of musicianship.

Critics will despise this album. It is certain to garner bad reviews. Thornton is known for his acting; whenever someone tries to carve out another career, they get hammered for it. But ignore what the critics say; go with the people who actually LISTEN to the music. Billy Bob Thornton isn't exactly country; he isn't exactly rock. He's stuck somewhere in between...and that's what makes THE EDGE OF THE WORLD so delictable.

This group is from Ireland but they aren't singing any Irish music, just
"New Age" music that gets quite boring.

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever!.......2007-05-05

This long-awaited new addition to Anuna's discography is a major treat. The ensemble sounds better than ever, and the album's name "Sensation" is particularly apt for the selections on this recording. As always, Michael McGlynn's compositions and arrangements here are breathtaking and extraordinarily atmospheric as performed by this unique choral group. "Shining Water" is one of the most intoxicating tracks, with its hypnotic 5/4 motion and inclusion of recorded Cetlic harp played backwards in the background. "The Road Of Passage" is another major highlight, which has a soaring soprano solo and overlapping chords. The disk comes to a truly stunning close with "O Maria", a densely layered piece with a goosebump-raising repeating progression and electrifying embiance.

4 out of 5 stars Review of this album by All Music Guide.......2007-04-23

Sensation, the 10th album by Irish choral ensemble Anúna, brings together a wide assortment of music, all of it arranged or composed by its conductor, Michael McGlynn. While McGlynn's treatments may rankle purists, who, for instance, only want to hear Hildegard von Bingen performed by unaccompanied women's voices, when taken on its own terms, his cross-pollination of musical styles is never less than intriguing and is most often beguiling.

McGlynn's sophistication as a composer accounts for much of the album's appeal. The title track, featuring a speaker reciting an idyllic Rimbaud poem, accompanied by violin, harp, and women's chorus singing a sensual, impressionistic setting of the same text, vividly captures the serenity and eroticism of Rimbaud's imagery. McGlynn's setting of the medieval text Maid in the Moor Lay is disarming in its folk-like simplicity and purity. His O Maria is harmonically and texturally complex, but never sounds "difficult," and conveys an otherworldly and enveloping serenity. Other pieces, such as Silver River and Shining Water, bring a new age sensibility to the Irish folk tradition.

The other factor in making this album so sensually appealing and rewarding is the extraordinary technical prowess and secure musicianship of the singers. The ease and precision and musicality of their performances of extremely demanding music puts them in the ranks of the very finest chamber choirs. It would be a pleasure to hear them bring their formidable strength to the broader repertoire of exceptional (and exceptionally difficult to perform) choral music that is being written today.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Perfection..........2007-01-02

Anuna could sing the phone book and it would make me cry. Michael McGlynn is BRILLIANT; his arrangements are so, so rich and full...there's nothing like it.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait!.......2006-11-10

At long last, Anuna returns with an album of all-new compositions by choirmaster Michael McGlynn. If you're viewing this item, chances are you're already familiar with Anuna's work, and this new album is definitely another masterpiece. The overall mood is quiet, meditative and enchanting. Some fans may miss the more energetic sound of songs like 'Salve Rex Gloriae' or 'Dicant Nunc' from past albums but the mystic mood throughout gives the album a cohesive sound which works perfectly. Top recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Precursor To Planet Drum...........2002-08-12

This CD goes well with the following CD Planet Drum.

This is Mickey's CD companion to the superb book "Drumming At the Edge..."

I just love how the CD starts off with the quietness of the "Forest" noises, going from track to track adding a little more percussive instruments building up to track 5 where Mickey & Co start to really cook. It is almost like you are starting at the beginning of time up to the present.

Great stuff to set your mind to!

    1. To The Threshold Of Silence

    Album Description

On World's Edge, Steve Roach takes a leap of faith at the edge of contemporary electronic music and jumps headfirst into unfamiliar territory. World's Edge explores the enigmatic relationships between sound and silence, space and rhythm, ancient ritual and modern technology.

On World's Edge disk one, Roach's previous forays into Australian Aboriginal music have expanded into potent rhythmic essays. On disk two, the introspective soundscapes Roach pioneered on classics like Structures from Silence reach a new level of mastery through a single, 60 minute composition, To the Threshold of Silence.

Through it all, World's Edge is a powerful, musical commentary on living at the edge of crisis, evolution and renewal. Says Roach, "I've always enjoyed this metaphor of coming to the edge of an abyss and jumping off, building your wings before you hit the bottom and soaring with the culmination of all those feelings. On another level, I was thinking a lot about the disappearance of ancient cultures as modern life infiltrates. I wanted to convey a primordial voice in the modern technology, go to the edge in a shamanic sense and bring back sounds that carry inspiration and power. On yet another level, I feel the pieces are imbued with the feeling that the world is at a critical edge in many ways. The artist, as an open nerve, has a responsibility to transform all of this into something that will hopefully give off at least a spark of insight and inspiration. World's Edge is a chronicle of my own search for meaning in this often overwhelming time."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Second of Three Ambient Masterpieces.......2002-05-30

Among Steve Roach's vast and brilliant catalog of ambient, or "space music" recordings, very few are less than superlative and a select few transcend the rest to establish the new high water mark by which all other ambient recordings are measured. 'World's Edge' is just such an album.

His first true masterpiece was the double album 'Dreamtime Return'. With 'World's Edge', Steve Roach moved into a new realm that integrated ambient textures with tribal rhythm's to completely transport the listener to, (hopefully without sounding too metaphysical) a new plain of existence. The first disc is especially effective in creating this feeling of escape, while the second disc is one long piece that is more introspective as it delves into the inner soul of the listener.

Once again, I must disagree with Mr. Moodindigo2 who seems to have completely missed the point of these albums. This music isn't about sensory deprivation: rather they are a complex and moving exercise in TOTAL IMMERSION. If you take the time to listen critically, you cannot help but be totally carried away by the intricate structures and subtle counterpoints of the music. I would suggest that Moodindigo2 give it another listen and try to stay awake this time.

This album is the second masterpiece in the triumvirate, but I must also agree with Moodindigo's "friend" who ranks Steve Roach's Early Man (yet another double CD) as the zenith of his career to date, and the third true masterpiece in his catalog. Buy them all and experience 6 discs of the best ambient music available anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Is this what it's like to be unconscious?.......2002-05-14

Amazing disc. Minimalism that is expressionistic. Ever shut your eyes and stare at the stars and red clouds that dance beneath your eye lids? World's Edge would be the soundtrack to that display. New Age that is etheral to the 10th degree. It is a soundscape that looks to the heavens (starry night) for its inspiration, but is rooted in something that is cthonic and primordial. Another Steven Roach fan who is a friend of mine prefers the "Early Man" album to this album. Uh uh. No way. What "Early Man" does for a jurassic feel, "World's Edge" would be the audio experience that comes from sensory deprivation. It can reach inside you and squeeze your heart a bit too tightly if you let it. That sounds extreme, but there is something to this disc that can send the listener on an astral journey, if you let it.....

    4 out of 5 stars Roach's first double-volume release since Dreamtime.......1999-02-12

Roach's most ambitious release since Dreamtime Return, World's Edge offers a synopsis of his various styles on disc one and offers an hour-long meditative mind journey called "To The Threshold of Silence" on disc two. The pieces on disc one are reminiscent of everything from Western Spaces (like "Undershadow") to Dreamtime Return (like "Steel and Bone") and extends the tribal-ambient direction he started on Dreamtime with "Beat of Desire" and "Thunderground", the latter of which is the best piece on the disc one. Disc Two, "To The Threshold of Silence", was his most ambitous space music composition at that time, beginning with a Tibetan- inspired gong ceremonial section, continuing with three other linked sections that move through various emotional spaces tied together by a common textural theme. A great introduction to Roach's music, particularly if you're interested in his '90s offerrings.
