A great under-rated album.......2006-10-22

I've had this album, since it was released, and was just listening to it recently (October 2006), so my review is not just based on the pleasure of a first listen.

I was impressed with this album when it was initially released, and remain so to this day. From a guitar point of view, it's probably the last album where Blackmore was given a free rein, and I enjoy his work on this.

As far as songwriting goes, my favourite track, would have to be "Fire in the Basement", I would love to see how that worked out live. I really get the feeling, it would be an equal to "Lazy".

I have to acknowledge those who refuse to credit this as a Deep Purple album, and refer it it as Rainbow. I find this hard to understand, given that the Ian Gillan Band been releasing product under the Deep Purple brand for how many years now?

Ugh.......2006-06-14

Deep Purple NEVER made a bad album until this trainwreck. According to an interview with Joe Lynn Turner:

"It's a shame. Some members may got jealous to RB, me and Jim Peatric who were recreating Deep Purple sound."

Yeah, these guys recreated Deep Purple to sound like every other generic 80's power ballad band. Thanks alot Joe Lynn Turner, you ruined a perfect career. The only positive part of this album that gives it two starts is some of the playing from Ritchie and Jon.

Not bad. Not great, but not awful, even though it sounds a lot like a Rainbow album.......2005-08-05

Well, during the tour for the last album, the Ian Gillan/Ritchie Blackmore feud caused Gillan to leave again. The band carried on with Ritchie bringing in former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner for this album. It's nowhere near the greatest, but there are some really stellar tracks here (Fire in the Basement, King of Dreams), along with some absolute drek, too (Breakfast in Bed, the worst Purple song ever).

About the only thing that saves this from being a Rainbow album is the presence of Jon Lord. I'd buy other Purple before this one, but it's not as awful as some folks would have you believe.

Hmm..........2005-01-24

I feel really sorry for all these one-track minded poor people out there, who are bashing so hard on this album, just because it doesn't sound like DP some 15-20 years earlier. For you guys maybe "Deep Purple = Machine head" and nothing else matters. Ask yourselves now whether you're one of these people. Well, if DP wanted to sound like they did during the early 70s, they would do it. Personaly I like the first line up (with Rod Evens) AND the Slaves And Masters album, especially the only song that Joe Linn Turner wrote for the album "TOO MUCH IS NOT ENOUGH", is the best DP song for me ever. I've been listening to DP since a child, for more than 20 years and I own the whole DP and Rainbow discography, together with over 1200 other albums, I listen to alot of music almost every day, and I do my second year as a "Musical Arts" student (bass guitar), so believe me, I know what I'm talking about. Yes, and I like the 74-75 albums with David Coverdale more than Mahine head. Don't you ever get tired of listening to Smoke on the water? I would agree with everyone who says this album is not like mk2 DP, but I would NOT agree that this album is in any way worse than any other DP album. It's a pleasure giving album, and "Too much is not enough" just rocks with its groovy mood.

Underrated and unfairly bashed.......2005-01-14

Slaves And Masters (1990.) Deep Purple's thirteenth album.

After two succesful reunion albums in the eighties, 1984's Perfect Strangers and 1987's The House Of Blue Lights, Deep Purple entered the nineties - and the band endured an unexpected twist! Ian Gillan had departed the band once again, leaving a vacancy. Ritchie Blackmore seized the opportunity to take control of the band, making the band's new singer his Rainbow cohort, Joe Lynn Turner. How does THIS version of Deep Purple's only album, Slaves And Masters, measure up? Read on for my review.

If you're looking for the classic Deep Purple sound, you ain't gonna find it here. But if you've got a thing for pop-flavored hard rock and heavy metal in the vain of Rainbow and Whitesnake, Slaves And Masters is sure to please. DO NOT come into this album expecting the band's classic sound - this one's only for the open minded. Joe Lynn Turner's presence in the band certainly shifts their sound in a more pop-oriented direction, not unlike the Rainbow albums he played in prior to singing on this album. The tracks that this album shells out are among the strongest heavy metal tracks of this type, but sadly, this ISN'T really the kind of stuff you'd expect from a Deep Purple album. Because of this, while the open-minded folks will greatly enjoy the album, the die-hard fans and loyalists of Ian Gillan aren't likely to give it the chance it deserves. This is a real shame... because it's a good album.

This album's availability and affordability are among the best in the Deep Purple catalogue, oddly enough, despite the album's mixed reviews and unpopularity. Most record stores carry this album for CHEAP - Amazon included. If you're a big enough fan of Deep Purple to discover this album, it's not gonna cost you much to add this underrated gem to your collection.

Final verdict? This album has been unfairly bashed for too long, just because it "doesn't sound like Deep Purple." People need to learn to enjoy the album through its own merits, and not judge it by the other material the band has recorded. Don't be so blind, people. Give this album the chance it deserves. Four of five stars.

PURPLE GOES HAIR-METAL?.......2005-07-19

Maybe I was just naive to expect Deep Purple to have come up with songs which demanded to be heard. After all, that's what made this band so extraordinary.

Joe Lynn Turner (Ian Gillan`s temporary replacement) is a solid vocalist, but his approach to singing is to rock-Vegas. It's hard to listen to SLAVES & MASTERS and not overlook this. But on to the album it's self.

The first three songs all have promise "instrumental wise," particularly KING OF DREAMS, which grooves along with some inspired keyboards from Jon Lord and attractive little touches of Ritchie Blackmore's guitar. The band are virtually rocking on THE CUT RUNS DEEP and they hit full stride on FIRE IN THE BASEMENT, a fast shuffle powered along by bassist Roger Glover and drummer lan Paice. FORTUNETELLER & TRUTH HURTS both start slow but pick up. LOVE CONQUER'S ALL is a beautiful balled, which is right up JLT's alley. Then there's TOO MUCH IS NOT ENOUGH, absolutely the worst song ever recorded by Deep Purple. You must skip over this song! Then, the album closes with WICKED WAYS, which is a good performance and I like JLT's vocals on the Chorus'.

So, if you're a fan of Rainbow (with Joe Lynn Turner) then check it out. It would have been classic Rainbow, had it not been Deep Purple! The bottom line, the legendary band seemed to have lost all sense of purpose; for the moment.

The only Deep purple album to feature former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, this resulted that they needed much more instruments such as Winger and Defender, it's a good album but it doesn't fit onto the sound of Deep Purple, it sounds much more as a Rainbow (with Turner) album something many Deep Purple fans didn't appreciated, they wanted Gillan back, the same did Glover, Paice and Lord, so Blackmore had to kick Turner before they finished another album.

Not a Low Point, Just Different.......2006-07-08

I am amazed to see how many people rave about this album. Though there is no DP album I don't like, this one is low on my rating list of the 18 studio albums in the band's career. To say it sounds like Rainbow is fair enough as the line up includes three members from the final Rainbow line up (Blackmore, Turner and Glover). It's like Rainbow took a break while Joe Lynn Turner beefed up his vocals a bit and came back with the other DP boys. Ritchie Blackmore is still distinctive in his playing though the modern 'late 80s (1990)' guitar sound seems out of place for DP and more like Rainbow. The album has great potential with some good songs and catchy choruses. Jon Lord contributes some orchestral efforts with a string arrangement and intro for Love Conquers All, something I believe we haven't heard since 1969, and in a way it's a shame that string arrangements were just not as cool in 1990 as they were back in '69. Jon Lord could have done so much more, I am sure.

I have mixed feelings about this CD. There are definately songs I can enjoy but it's hard to consider them a part of the DP legacy. Along with Come Taste the Band (another very different DP album that I still like) this album is one that deviates greatly from the familiar DP sound. But then again, variety and experimentation are two things that Deep Purple have always worked towards.

It's interesting to note that for the most part the band members (other than Blackmore) in retrospect were not thrilled about firing Ian Gillan and doing an album with Joe Lynn Turner, and admit that Slaves and Masters doesn't sound like a Purple album.

Great Album.......2006-01-24

This is one of my favourite albums. Yes, it is Joe Lynn Turner on vocals, but I'm sorry I do like it. I am also a huge Rainbow fan. This album has a regular home in my glove box and now resides on my MP3 player!

i have all four of these cds and i can honestly say that i don't listen to any of them at all except for slaves and masters on a regular basis. yeah yeah, it's not ian gillan and yeah yeah it sounds like rainbow. fans are almost as bad as critics sometimes. makes me sick. hell, i think dp has come a long way with steve morse on abandon and banannas since perpindicular and has cememted his status as the guitarist of dp. give me jlt, ian gillian, coverdale any of them singing in this band any day over blackmore's yoko ono i've lost my mind and hang out with george lynch (act 2 of lynch mob, dokken shadowlife) when he's in a weird mood band. now that is absolute crap squared. king of dreams is still a great song fifteen years later and the overall cd is a classic that has been treated unfairly becasue it was released in the so called "80's" well, 1990 actually. good music is good music no matter what decade it was released in. hell, i love ten thousand fists just as much as piece of mind. why be shallow and stuck in the 80s, 60's or 70's? go visit and listen, come back and listen to new, and back again. too much is not enough is the only song that doesn't make my list on this otherwise great cd. a cover i think. done rambling

An album that should not have been.......2005-10-07

This one is a girly cd. It contains the girly man Turner on vocals. He always ranted about how he didn't want to emmulate Gillan. Well ,guess what "chimp"? you didn't. The Purple realized thar they were never a hair band and they fire his balzy ass. There are two good songs : "King of Drams" and "Wicked Ways" and Blackmore is good as always but Randy "Lynn" Turner just doesn't cut it he is probably doing Bon Jovi emmulations because Gillan is still rocking and she's still sulking.

Bottom line : not a beefer album ,a Albertesque album for Martha lover's pizza.

At Work with Power Clasics.......2000-01-20

Using the 10 CD set of Power Classics over the past five years while "working" daily on Nordic Trak has been a great help. The relatively short segments break up the workout and provide a welcome support for my efforts. The variety of selections available relieve boredom although, I must admit, when one selection finishes I can now mentally hum the next intro. I recommend this set highly for any strenuous workout program.

Slaves and Masters (1990.) The thirteenth Deep Purple studio album.

And thus, Ritchie Blackmore brought in the man who had been so much an instrument of success in his other band Rainbow - Joe Lynn Turner.

OVERVIEW:
Deep Purple released Slaves and Masters in October of 1990. Roger Glover produced the album. The album featured the short-lived Mark Five lineup of Joe Lynn Turner on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Ian Paice on drums, Jon Lord on keyboards, and Roger Glover on bass.

REVIEW:
Many people bash this album because, due to the Blackmore/Turner collaboration, they think it sounds too much like Rainbow. Maybe this is true, to a point, but the fact of the matter is that it's a good album just the same. It deserves WAY more respect than it gets. While definitely not their best album, it has some great cuts.

-King Of Dreams:
The album starts out in fine form. This is power rock at its absolute finest. It's the perfect fusion of melodic and heavy stuff. Definitely my favorite song from the album. This song should have gone down in history as a Deep Purple classic, but sadly, that didn't happen.

-Cut Runs Deep:
After a deceivingly melodic introduction, the band starts rocking hard and never lets down. Turner's vocals are excellent on this song, and with them the song seems like the perfect fusion of the sounds of Rainbow and Deep Purple. A solid rocker from start to finish.

-Fire In The Basement:
This is your typical straight-up pop-rock tune, but with that spin that makes it uniquely Deep Purple. Honestly though, the song sounds like it was written with Ian Gillan in mind - weird assuming vocalist Turner actually co-wrote it. Just the same, it's a good song.

-Truth Hurts:
Here's another straightforward rock tune - but it's got a melodic twist that with the instrumentation that sets it apart from the other songs on the album. What we get here is one of those songs that's the perfect fusion of heavy and melodic.

-Breakfast In Bed:
As one of the more unique songs on the album, this is one of the ones I've found myself coming back to often. While the song has an intro that would make you think it's going to be pretty standard Deep Purple fare, it quickly becomes a blues-based rocker, not at all unlike the stylings used by Bad Company. It sounds almost like Turner is mimicking Paul Rodgers! A very good song.

-Love Conquers All:
This album came out in an era where it was pretty common for an album to feature all rockers and a single ballad amongst the hard rock tunes. Slaves And Masters was no exception to this rule. Very melodic instrumentation, much of it orchestral, appears in this track. The result is a very solid ballad whose inclusion on this record is more than justified. Great tune.

-Fortuneteller:
This song is very melodic in comparison to most of the other tracks, but nowhere near being a ballad like the previous track was. It's got that classic Deep Purple/Rainbow sound to it all the way through, and it keeps things interesting all the while. Once again, good stuff.

-Too Much Is Not Enough:
Another solid rocker. This time around, Jon Lord throws a ton of keyboards into the mix, but this does more good for the track than you might think. He knows how to keep things interesting. It's a nice upbeat mix of hard rock and pop rock from start to finish.

-Wicked Ways:
The closer ends things on a high note. Once again, the group creates a solid rock tune that is both heavy and catchy - something Deep Purple has been able to do from day one. Ultimately this song is a solid end to a Deep Purple era that was far too short.

OVERALL:
One of the most unfairly bashed albums in Deep Purple's catalogue. I get sick of hearing people don't like this album just because it seems more like a lost Rainbow album than a Deep Purple album. There's nothing wrong with trying something different once in a while. In the end, the lone release from Deep Purple Mark Five is a good one. If you're a die-hard Deep Purple fan, this one is worth picking up. Casual fans may want to pass on this one, though.

EDITION NOTES:
This album is available in many stores at a budget price. As such, if it's one you want, you should have no trouble finding it for a good price.

The recordings are crisp, the performers are big stars. The selections are nicely arranged. Being a Mozart fan, I think the first two discs are worth the price of the entire set. Look at the selections! It's all here and it's all great recordings.
