Editorial Reviews
Product Description
This 1972 release marked the end of the line for Sweetwater until they re-formed in the late '90s, as the inability to tour with Nevins or find a suitable replacement killed the band's career chances. Still, there are some great moments here, and the band's always superior musicianship shines through.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top Ten CDs.........2007-06-26

After sort of passing off Blind Melon when they came out (only played songs were sort of commercial & Shannon Hoon's later stage work was a bit scary), I came to love this & Soup. These, some Alice in Chains, A Perfect Circle & Days of the New are probably my most played CDs.

Getting old now, but if you didn't give this a chance you should.

5 out of 5 stars sigh.......2007-02-08

I bought it when it came out. I bought 'Soup' when that came out, and then I bought 'Nico' when that arrived, as well.

Well, it's 15 years later, and now I can't listen to this album. I can't listen to Nico, and while I can occasionally get up to put on Soup, this one gathers the most dust. To call it a solid album is an understatement. To come to terms with it is impossible. I've worn it out and repurchased it probably five times? I even stole my sister's copy.

The songwriting and playing is brutally personal and honest to the point where it frightens me. I get emotionally upset when people bring up the band, the singer, or the songs.

Capitol pressed so many copies that you can buy it here for $.99, and if you ever thought Seward got a good deal...

3 out of 5 stars It's alright.......2006-11-03

Nothing special here aside from the song "No Rain", but it's still a pretty good album. Decent rock form a decent band.

3 out of 5 stars Once I got passed "No Rain" it's actually good.......2006-09-10

I couldn't get passed "No Rain" when I owned this album. You see "No Rain" was the first song I heard off this album, and it's dreary sounding even on a sunny day. I heard when shooting the video that Shannon Hoon the group's lead vocalist hated the little girl who's in the video. Well she's probably now 24, and had Hoon not killed himself in 1995 he may very well be masturbating over her right now. The song just doesn't belong here as the rest of these songs are more rocked out than the song "No Rain". I found "Holyman", "Time", and "Dear Old Dad", and let's not forget "Soak Up Sun" as the cream of the crop. I was pleasantly surprised that this was actually better than originally expected. I bought this in May of 1994, but never played it all the way through as I was going through so many changes at this time, and I just put it off to the side, and eventually got rid of the album. I know that "No Rain" was still a thorn in my side, so I will put this to rest now.

5 out of 5 stars ESCAAAPE.....ESCAAAPE..........2006-08-23

This is an awesome debut album. It had been a few since I had put this one on, and it all came pouring back, just beautiful. Blnd Melon in my opinion has always been overlooked as just some obscure jam band,or a one hitter. But this band is so much more, and this debut release shows what a group of talented musicians these guys were. This band had such unique sound for it's time. Sure you could drag out all the infuence's here and there, but you would lose what is truly there. Songs like "Tones Of Home","Change", and "No Rain" are inviting. While "I Wonder",and "Holyman" ring out like a folksy lullaby. This soundscape of blues/folk/rock is truly inspirational, and when it sink's in leaves an impression. Check out School House Rock, Woodstock 94',Live Like A Porcupine, and Enconium if you can't find enough B.M. Blind Melon fans will always be Blind Melon fans.

5 out of 5 stars Lost Gem.......2007-06-08

Blind Melon's second (and last) proper studio album is truly a lost gem of 90's alternative rock. This effort is flawless all the way through. From the song writing to the band's musicianship, this is Blind Melon in top form. The production on this record is amazing and the album rewards those who put in the multiple listenings needed to grasp such a dense recording. This underrated masterpiece will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Hoon was such a tragic loss.......2007-05-03

I find this album to be a big improvement on Blind Melon's self titled debut. It is much more diverse and tackles several musical genres with aplomb. As usual Shannon Hoon's voice is outstanding. He was a one-off. Nobody could ever sound like him. It is such a shame that he died so young and so tragically.

For me the highlight of the album and possibly one of the best songs of the 90s is "New Life". It is an amazing song both lyrically and musically. It's rare to hear a man sing about his fears and worries about impending fatherhood. Hoon wonders if the new life (the new baby) will breathe new life into him. What a noble aspiration and what a sad thing to admit. I'm sure Hoon's life was stretched enough by his drug addiction that he hoped that the impending birth of his son would give him a boost rather than drag him down further. Other classics on this album would include "Galaxie", "2X4" and "Mouth Full Of Cavities".

What an amazing talent Shannon Hoon was..and what a sad loss.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars ... what could have been.......2007-02-22

This album is such a great snapshot of Blind Melon's potential. Musically it is SO diverse. Rock, New Orleans Style Jazz, country and all more in between.

While their debut is strong in its own right... Soup takes the pallet and travels in many directions that all really work. They never go beyond their ability.

The scope of this album is so broad. Lyrically it sings with Shannon's voice.

Yet another rock n roll tragedy... and an EXTREMELY overlooked album

5 out of 5 stars hands down best album of the 90's.......2006-12-14

so i recently read that blind melon was "one of the worst bands of all time" according to blender magazine. i couldn't believe that there is someone out there that has the balls to say something like that. i guess these days if music is too creative, different, or has any type of real emotion, then it's too much for the average listener to handle. this album is one of the most creative records i have ever heard! there are so many different sounds, ideas, and emotions present. everything about this band was unique. everything. if you actually like music. actually like to sit and listen to music. if you understand the magic an album can hold, then this is the album for you. if you are looking for something quick easy and to the point, i know this site sells creed records too.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2007-01-20

This is the best "Greatest Hits" package I have ever seen. All the essential tracks are tracklisted here - released as singles or not. I can't name one essential track that was missed. This album is faultless. They even included "Three is a magic number" which up till now was a rare track. I still can't believe it...a greatest hits that is actually an accurate representation and a worthy tribute to the band!

5 out of 5 stars Love Blind melon, this is a perfect CD to give to a friend........2006-11-14

This is not a product of the grunge era. They are one of those rare and unique gems from the 90's. I'm biased as hell, It's my fav band of all time. But I listen to everything and know enough about music to pick out the s*** from the gold. This Album is particularly good for its live stuff and also the hard to get "3 is a magic number". It's one of my personal favorites. The pusher, is controversial, another remake, another song you gotta listen to. They only made three albums, but what the hell...Gotta say, I wasn't expecting to see a greatest hits. Still, like I said, great start for those of you out there who have only heard "no rain." P.S. They only made three albums cause Hoon died. The world is cruel.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2005-12-27

Die-hard Blind Melon fans might argue that getting the first album would be better value for money. I have to disagree on account of the last three tracks. Three is a magic number is an insanely catchy educational track which i believe tops No Rain in terms of catchiness, You can't help but smile when Shannon Hoon shouts out "3x10 is" and is immediatly answered by a chorus of "30." and they work their way all the way down to "and 3x1 is (what is it?) 3!". The two live tracks prove that blind melon are an amazing live band. As for the actual compilation, it is a good account of blind melon's best tracks, although most will argue that their favourite tracks off the debut are not contained (I would've personally put "Seed to a tree" and "Sleepyhouse.") It does include their ever famous "No rain." and great songs like "2x4" and "Time". It should be excellent for initiates.

4 out of 5 stars Blind Melon At Its Best.......2005-09-30

This album has some good hits, more off the older albums, but if you're looking for amazing Blind Melon I'd suggest going with their self-titled album, every song is amazing and it gives the listen such a greater appreciation for the band. The Best Of combines songs from all their albums, but too me there are a lot more songs, "Holyman", "Sleepyhouse", "Skinned", and a ton more I would have liked to seen on this disc. But other than that its still a great cd and if you liked "No Rain" you'll like this cd and i suggest you get it.

4 out of 5 stars Better blind than deaf........2005-09-28

Nice to finally have a real "Best Of" out. Previously all we had was one of those always lame "Classic Masters" collections. This greatly improves on that disc by adding 7 tracks, and having better packaging. Of course the obvious songs are here like "No Rain", "Tones Of Home", and "Soup". Also good though is "Time", "Three Is The Magic Number", and "2 x 4". It's a nice change to hear the "No Rain (ripped away version)" as well. I think this proper collection is an excellent way for casual fans to see that Blind Melon was more than just the band with the bee-girl video. Shannon and the group were indeed underrated.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2006-04-30

even though this is just a tribute to hoon, and of course nico, it is still one of the best "alt" albums of the 90s. I am going to put what i think of their albums in the category of 1 being the worst and 10 being the best:

Blind Melon (1992) 9/10

Soup (1995) 9/10 (because they didn't even put "soup" on the album!)

Nico (1996) 10/10

4 out of 5 stars shannon hoon from heaven .......2005-12-31

"nico" the name given to shannon hoon's baby girl i think the front cover is a photo of shannon but not 100 perecent certain so don't qoute me on that any down to the review blind melon will always be remebered for that song "no rain" and the bubble-bee girl..but they were more than one song they were a unit that made beautiful music that settles nicely in your soul..
this album features two covers one of the steppenwolf classic
"the pusher" shannon hoon do the best cover i've ever heard
and the cover of the protest song vwritten by the late great john winston lennon "john sinclair"
this album features the title song not featured on the album "soup"
and too end this album perfectly you get a phone in song by shannon only with a guitar..recorded onto an answer phone beautiful!!!! a classic post-humourous album compiled lovingly by blind melon to honour shanoon hoon and dedicated to the nico blue

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2004-03-26

I would have to say that this is by all means my best and most used cd ever bought. Shannon was an amazing performer, he and the rest of the band(Rogers,Christopher,Brad, and Glen)were so under-rated that it makes me sick every time i hear them. I have been a die-hard fan for about 5 years now and i just can't get tired of their beautiful and touching music. Its like nothing else, forget "No Rain",listening to Blind Melon makes you close your eyes and it warms you inside. Their talent was unbelievable along with their music. I only wish they Shannon was here now to make some more real music. He is deeply missed by us fans.

Oh yea you have to buy this cd. Trust me you can't help but love it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2003-08-05

The first time I heard this album was when a friend lent it to me. I was on my way to work and put it in the cd player. Two weeks later, there it remained. I can't describe how incredible their music is, I'm sure you'll agree. Shannon had a gift, a beautiful gift. I'm just glad he got to share a little bit of that gift with the world. The band made this cd for us, the fans, and for Nico Blue. Maybe, one day, she will be able to use this disc to see a glimpse of who her father was. There are three guarantees in life--you'll live, you'll die, you'll love this cd.
RIP Shannon

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums eva!!!.......2003-07-22

The energy and sound quality on this disc are phenomenal. Shannon sounds passionate and the music is tight and crisp as can be. I wanted a longer set with some gems off the debut (I wonder, Holy Man). If like this AMAZING band in any capacity... buy this disc. It totally rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Great album, but short.......2007-02-03

Great album, but short. Why is Blind Melon reforming? Whats the point? Thats like Nirvana reforming without Kurt Cobain. Leave the legacy alone people.

5 out of 5 stars Live at the Palace (The Real Version).......2006-11-22

This is a phenomenal album with the CORRECT TRACK LISTING, unlike the other release by the same name. Too bad they don't make bands like they used to, and the only problem with this album is it's way too short. Amazing sound quality.

This is the second of a series of three TMG comps. These three comps (also Protein source of the Future Now and Ghana) comprise many seven inches, cassette tapes and other hard to acquire TMG material. THis is my favorite of the three and I reccomend getting all three of them, because it is a good starter kit for new TMG listeners. Some highlights are Noche Del Guajolte, Sail On, Rain Song, Alpha Double Negative: Going to Catalina, and a cover of Ace of Bases "the Sign". All in all a great compilation by John Darnielle. Peace.Love.
