Les Nubians have carved out a name for themselves as the sexy soul sisters with a thirst for jazz grooves and hip-hop beats. But the Faussart girls are switching gears on their third album, creating a 21-track aural excursion filled with rich array of guest poets reading, rapping and slamming in English and French. The verbosity means there is less focus on Helene and Celia's beautiful Afro-pean voices and harmonies, not to mention their bumpin' grooves, but the poets¹ stories are vivid. Tracks like "Fire" and "NYC" highlight the new sound, while songs like "Rendez-vous New York" and the French language "Les Entrailes du Monde" are a musical reveries equal to past glories. Echos isn't really follow up to the two previous albums. It's more of a response to HBO' s Mos Def-hosted Def Poetry Jam and the countless other poets out there performing. The singing sisters and "modern day Nubian griots" of LES NUBIANS, Helene and Celia Faussart, have returned from yet another fantastic voyage, and have many poetic tales to share on their new album LES NUBIANS PRESENTS: ECHOS-CHAPTER ONE-NUBIAN VOYAGER. A musical expedition of poetry and song featuring 4 new Les Nubians tracks, the conception of this album came to Helene Faussart on a memorable Feluqua boat trip while traveling with her sister Celia in Aswan, Nubia in 2000. This chic, multi-part album showcases Les Nubians' lifelong affinity for poetry, be it their own words, or those of other poets they have met along their many tours and travels since 1999, mingled with sultry Afro-soul and hip hop grooves. They have also included three new tracks- "I Disagree," "Rendez-vous New York" (a duet with John Banzai) and 'Solide'.

Recorded in NY, Paris, Bordeaux, London, Marseilles and San Francisco, Echos is divided into four parts: La Terre/The Motherland, Dans Le Ville/Urban City Life, Des Hommes et Des Femmes/Love Stories, and Les Elements/Spiritual Human Nature. Each chapter is introduced by Les Nubians and features an array of gifted French, African and American word craftsmen, such as Souleymane Diamanka, Queen GodIs, John Banzaï & C.Lia, Jamarhl Crawford and Nazeelah Jameson.

Their previous two acclaimed albums charted impressively in the Billboard Top 200, each respectively the highest debut for a French language album in the past 20 years.

A Spoken Word Triumph!.......2005-11-05

Les Nubians took a chance and stepped out into a new realm by spotlighting some of best spoken word artists on this continent and abroad, and I am loving it! The album still has that Les Nubians feel, but it is now more textured with the addition of this beautiful poetry. Every song on it is strong and evokes a feeling of being right there in the moment. It is jazzy, thoughtful, soulful, continental, and just downright fly!

I purchased Les nubians cd entitled "Princess Nubiennes" after I saw the video for Makeda and have continued to follow their releases including "Echos." Les Nubians Presents "Echos" Includes music in french and english as well as poetry in english and french. If you do not speak or understand french this cd will make you want to learn the language. The spoken word artists and the music behind their poetry will make you feel at peace as you listen to the nature type instruments and sound effects in the back ground. This is a sit back and relax cd. At times the cd includes Manifestos such as the Track "heaven" and spoken word pieces in which queen godIs Shouts "Fire!" and "Freeeedommm" as she discusses issues of slavery, progress, "blackness," and her lyrical prowess's. Les Nubians also presents a live version of "Demain" Ca veut dire "Tommorow" and Embrasse- Moi (which you may be able to infer.) de le premier CD "Princess Nubienne" cd. This cd is a reflection of creative energy from across the globe, from Ny, France et Afrique that creates a cd laced with beauty and art for your listening and cognitive pleasures. Spoken Word and Grooves.......2005-10-05

if you enjoy poetry/spoken word with grooves, then this is the cd for you. i thought this was another Les Nubians cd (i love them)but was i surprised. The sisters, did a great job of bringing together some very talented poets/artist from around the world. dont worry that some of the artist speak French, a couple translate the words into English. this is one of those cd's that you put in and just chill to.

Liona Boyd.......2007-03-26

It's interesting, I think, to note how Miss Boyd's style and technique seem to polarise the current reviews for her album "The Spanish Album". I certainly wasn't aware that Miss Boyd is regarded as "a light weight" in the classical guitar world.

I can only say that as a humble amateur classical guitarist, I remain an avid admirer of her interpretation of several of the standard classics on this album.

Her virtuosity in Gran Jota has already been referred to: may I also single out the sweet expressiveness of her playing in Capricio Arabe (which I suggest cannot be matched by any other modern recording)as well as the fascinating discords in Asturias.

Yes, and I'm Clark Kent, reporter for a small town daily. Liona Boyd achieved her fame through non musical means. As a musician she leaves a great deal to be desired. Her technique is modest. Her interpretive skills are nonexistent. Proclaiming her "queen of classical guitar technique" is only revealing of one's ignorance. I only wish there was a zero star rating.

If you wish to hear the real McCoy I recommend Martha Masters.

Boyd is, in fact, considered a lightweight in the world of classical guitar. Sure, she's sold recordings, but not anything worth listening to. If you're looking for excellent female classical guitarrists, look for Antigoni Goni and Sharon Isbin. Don't waste your ears on Boyd.

While the Sufi musical tradition of Pakistan is well documented in the popular press because of the work of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his predecessors, the Sabri Brothers (both represented with excellent tracks in this collection), the wealth of great art from this religious culture is often left unheard. This two-CD set rectifies the problem with style and beauty. Not only Pakistan, but Egypt, Senegal, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and many other countries in Asia and the Middle East have rich traditions of devotional music from loosely defined Sufi roots, from the simplest solo singer to lush orchestras of percussion, harmoniums, and massed voices. Each of the 21 tracks on Sufi Soul is worth your attention: the incredible passion of a women's choir from Uzbekistan; the sparse, gentle flute solo of ney master Hassan Kassayi; a rare tanbur (lute) and vocal track by Ostad Elahi; a Balachi song for sorud (fiddle). There are standout tracks that need to be mentioned. The frame drum and qanun (zither) come together in Ensemble Al-Kindi for a dramatic, almost avant-garde feeling. An amazing Persian singer, Khatereh Parvaneh, presents the poetry of Rumi in a piece in dastgah shour; she performs with minimum ornamentation to maximum effect, accompanied only by a hammered zither. Senegalese artist Musa Dieng Kala offers one of the most stirring vocal pieces on the set, an a cappella masterwork. As with most of the Network sets, this is a gorgeous package, with great photos and excellent liner notes on the history and the music, in English, French, and German. --Louis Gibson

Music to reflect by.......2000-06-15

This CD set is one of my two favorites; the other is the Desert Songs compilation by this same label. This very well recorded selection, brings you into the location and mindset of the various Musicians. The really nice presentation, with extensive liner notes, pictures and the sheer wealth and variety of sufi/mystic music from around the world, make this double CD set a thoughtful present for friends interested in esoteric music or Middle Eastern music. It is music to relax and meditate by, music to do your work and dream with. Highly recommended.

Lacrimosa - True, sophisticated Goth!.......2006-04-30

I used to be quite heavily into Goth in the late 80s, through the early-mid 90s. After that, I started losing interest, it seemed as though Goth was getting too popular, and thus commercialized, and the new Goth music coming out just seemed less and less appealing.

Well, this review is for those of you, like me, who miss the old school Goth. I don't know about all that crap that they call Goth nowadays, I won't name specific names here. But I do know that it's missing the old vibe. So, if you like older Goth; you know, Bauhaus, X-Mal Deutschland, Gitane Demone, Switchblade Symphony, Mephisto Walz, Suspiria, etc... then check out Lacrimosa.

I know now that they have in fact been putting out albums through the 90s, but living here in the United States of Ignorance, I had no idea of them until last year, when I traveled outside the country and found Echos in a music shop! Intrigued by the cover (it's the original European release, with a ship on the cover), I bought it, and thus discovered that true, profound Goth is alive and very well in Lacromisa!

Now, Lacrimosa is quite musically complex, I believe more so than the more usual Goth bands. If you check out Lacrimosa you should also like Classical, or at least be open-minded about it, because there is a heavy dose of it. The only very, very slight complaint I have about Echos is the long first track classical overture, it is maybe a bit too long, but this is very minor; it is otherwise perfect in every way!

There are a number of reviewers here who seem disturbed by the singing and German language. I am surprised by this. His voice and way of singing is stunning; a very strong and powerful Goth voice, not screaming like with some bands, just very powerful and emotive. The German language is amazing, harsh and beautiful. In my European release I have no English translations; I don't need them, his voice becomes an instrument that speaks to me on another level, I need no literal meanings...

My Second Favorite Lacrimosa Album.......2005-06-19

It's too bad Amazon does not sell Lacrimosa's Satura album; that one is definitely my favorite. Echos is awesome, though, and any lover of classical music or gothic rock should have it, as long as haunting German vocals will not turn them off.

Tilo's vocals really are the only complaint anyone can have about Echos. At times, they are cheesy. The only other complaint I can think of is that the intro track, Kyrie, is a little too long. The piece is not complicated enough to warrant 12-13 minutes. They could have shortened it a little without losing much. Also, Tilo's singing sounds a bit off on "Eine Nacht in Ewigkeit".

However, I don't listen to Lacrimosa for the vocals, but for the beautiful music accompanying them. Absolutely brilliant.

It Made Me Love Classical Music Again........2004-07-13

'Echos', is Lacrimosa's 8th CD of original music. This long running German band has sucessfully blended two genres of music, Rock and Classical, into a beautiful and dramatic rock opera. As a fan of Lacrimosa for many years, I was quite surprised when I popped this CD into the Stereo. There is a lot of strings, choirs, and piano in this CD. Tilo's um.. interesting voice is a little disconcerting at first, but you get used to it after a while. The album opens with Kyrie, an overture consisting of strings and a choir. This then descends into Durch Nacht Und Flut, a catchy blend of Strings and Guitars, and Tilo's passionate voice.By the time Tilo's Kermit-esque vocals faded out on 'The Screams are Silenced, I was speechless. This album made me love Classical Music again.

I've never been fond of the 'Goth' tag, but after hearing 'Echos' I realized that this CD goes far beyond gothic music, or classical music, or even Rock. THIS CD IS LACRIMOSA, and only Lacrimosa.

Lush and darkly engaging.......2004-02-06

An online friend of mine kept recommending Lacrimosa to me so I finally gave in and bought 'Echos' several months back. At first I didn't care for it much and actually put it in my to-sell-someday drawer but I'm really glad I recently gave it another try. Some CDs take a long time to grow on me, and I'm not sure why, but a lot of them turn out to be eventual favorites. I love music sung in different tongues but I'm not too fond of German and all the tracks but one are in that language so the lead male vocalist, Jilo Wolff, took some getting used to. I now admire his deeply expressive tone, though, and I believe it meshes well with Lacrimosa's haunting synthesis of classical and melodic Goth metal seamlessly mixed to perfection. Anne Nurmi also has a gorgeous voice that supports a good number of the melodies. In the future I just hope to hear more of her talents upfront and in the spotlight because she did such a stunning job on "Apart".

Thanks to the person who got me hooked on this group (nosferatum) I have some more Lacrimosa albums on their way to me and am really looking forward to experiencing their other releases. And because I don't know a word of German the English translations for the lyrics and song titles were greatly appreciated.

Highlights for me include "Durch Nacht und Flut (Through Night And Flood)", the epic 9 minute long "Sacrifice", the previously mentioned "Apart" and "Eine Hauch von Menschlichkeit (A Touch Of Humanity)".

Welcome my friends to the show that never ends..........2004-01-30

An audacious foray into orchestral Brechtian prog-goth that earns stars just for being so hilariously pompous and endearingly anachronistic. A kind of "Brain Salad Surgery" for the new millineum, Lacrimosa's "Echos" (hey-that ain't how Pink Floyd spelt it!) kicks off with a 13-minute "overture" titled "Kyrie" (hey-I think that IS the same way that Marillion spelt it!) that lets us know right away that these are Serious Artistes. From that point on, bandmates Tilo and Anne (whose "Sprockets"-style photo shoot in the accompanying booklet teases and challenges us to "touch thier monkey") warble, bellow and pianoforte thier way through an almost indescribable 45 minutes of Nick Cave meets Dead Can Dance by way of ELP, Van Der Graf Generator and Amon Duul II, with a pinch of David Bowie's "Low" period thrown in. Tilo's er, Teutonic "vocalizing" takes a little getting used to (I keep picturing Joel Grey in "Cabaret") but Anne's voice provides more melodic moments. The standout song is the haunting "Sacrifice", with its subtle marimba track recalling Bowie's "Loving The Alien". Not the type of CD you're going to pull out at a social gathering, but if you're in the right mood, you may find that these "Echos" are worth repeating.

This is a stunning disc: if you don't know the music of the French Baroque it will convert you - if you know the music already the performance and interpretation will dazzle you. Lully wrote with what I hear as an incredibly modern sense of melody - his tunes (and most of the pieces are short) are instantly accessible to a modern ear and are impossible to shake off, but these are more than simply pop songs; they are layered and varied, from exuberance to melancholy, to resignation and tears, to delight. And why buy this one rather than another interpretation ? Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations combine technical virtuosity with a beautiful musicality that allows you to hear the layers in the music, and they play with a sense of joy, and at times wildness, that make me wish I could dance. This package of transcribed 1931 radio shows from the Cocoanut Grove, Hollywood, is the natural companion to the 2-CD set on Renovation. The introduction to "Singing the Blues" is extrapolated and inserted at the start of "By A Lazy Country Lane", possibly in tribute to Bix Beiderbecke who died in August 1931. The Three Ambassadors are good fun, showing the influence of the Rhythm Boys, particularly when joined by Harry Barris. This CD is now hard to find, but well worth hunting down.

The Cocoanut Grove series was made from rented large record disks; radio stations would rent the privelege of one play only, then send the disk back. As a result, these disks are virtually mint, and with modern technology the sound quality is remarkable considering the era.

Gus Arnheim's Orchestra reflects the era, as symphonic jazz became more orchestrated with a more sober sound brought on by the Depression. Soloist Loyce Whitman displays her exceptional voice, as do the male soloists and The Three Ambassadors trio (similar to the Rhythm boys of Paul Whitman).

If you enjoy vintage music from this era, you will love this CD.

A Musical Time Machine.......2001-03-03

Sit back, dim the lights, close your eyes, listen and be swept back to the Hollywood of the early 30's when class and style ruled and the music fit the mood. This album does it. Aces!
