4 out of 5 stars Heeeeere's Johnny!! .......2007-03-13

Skid Row - Thickskin:

After several years as the lead singer of Skid Row, Dallas native Johnny Solinger, finally released his first collection of recordings since 1999's locally distributed Chain Link Fence. Thickskin is an amazing album. Equal parts old and new school make this CD familiar yet adventurous. The CD starts of with a Manson-meets-Bon Jovi-like anthem called "New Generation" and never lets up. The lead single, "Thick Is The Skin" is a traditional rock anthem in that "Youth Gone Wild" vein. "Lamb", "Mouth of Voodoo" and "Hitting The Wall" are more modern rockers with a heavier edge. "I Remember You Too" is an irreverant punkified version of their monster '89 hit that's sure to piss off the Bas-loving purists. Always a sucker for the ballads, "One Light" is my favorite track - not so much for its "post-911-loss-of-a-loved-one" lyrical content, but rather for Johnny's strong, soaring vocals. Two things I grew up with: late 80's Mtv rock/metal and the early 90's D/FW local music scene. One of my dearest friends, Johnny Solinger, is now a proud part of both.

2 out of 5 stars One killer song and the rest filler.......2007-02-25

"Thick Is The Skin" is one awesome song. Great guitar riff, great bass, good vocals. It is almost worth buying for that song alone. But other than that, I didn't much care for the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best Metal album of the year.......2006-10-06

I was skeptical of anything decent from Skid Row without Bach, but after hearing Thickskin, it's obvious that their primary strength is songwriting. I'm a huge fan of Bach, and Sollinger is great, but Barney the dinosaur could sing these songs and they would get stuck in your head. Incredible songwriting, as always- great musicianship, and Sollinger does a good job at being himself while still sounding like Skid Row's singer should. If 'Born a Beggar', 'Ghost', and 'Lamb', don't get stuck in your head, you have no memory.
Highly recommended for fans of old and new metal. Can't wait to hear the new album 'Revolutions Per Minute'. These guys seem to improve with every release.

5 out of 5 stars got to get...if as good as live.......2006-06-25

just saw skid row live in erie pa and i must say...not a single thing missing just a diffrent lead singer and i must say...as a old die hard fan...i am a new die hard fan too....new album they said to be released in fall with all new stuff

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad rock album, but Baz is surely missed, band should be renamed.......2006-06-19

I am a big Skid Row fan from the 80's and 90's and a fan of rock/metal in general. This album is pretty good and heavy, not a bad listen at all. People will all have their views on a band switching lead singers and going in another direction. I personally feel that this project does not need to be named Skid Row. The singer sounds nothing like Baz which is fine, he shouldn't need to make his name copying someone else. But at the same time, he doesn't have the style to sing Skid Row's older music, and the I Remember You 2003 is more a punk parody than a cover. His voice is good, but he doesn't have the rawness and emotion that Baz does. These guys are great musicians and the new singer is fine but they are not the Skid Row we all knew and loved without Sebastian. Remember when Motley Crue got rid of Vince Neil? How about if Velvet Revolver's members called themselves Guns N Roses (not that they legally could, just making a point.) GNR would not be GNR without Axl (again not that the current GNR joke is either, just making a point.) Skid Row and Axl should have both done the same thing, let us keep all our great memories and hope for a reunion in the future, in the meantime call it a new band because that's what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Thick Skin is Rockin.......2006-04-30

If you shy away from getting this cd because Sebastian Bach is missing from the line-up, I promise you, you wont be disappointed. Johnny Solinger, the new singer does not try to copy Baz's vocal style, he's a little more bluesy. I love this album, i recommend to all. some highlights are "Ghost", "Thick Is The Skin" and "Born A Beggar". I think the weakest song on the cd is "I Remember You Two". To each his own, Rock On!
