Customer Reviews:
Best of Emperor.......2007-02-27
This two disk set is exacty what the it says, a collection of the best songs of emperor. Unfortunatly due to the fact Emperor varies there sound so much throught the span of there career, it leaves the listener much to be desired. When going through the first disk the I found it to be very disjointed, and it felt as though I was listening to a completely different band by the end of the disk. It does display a good sampling of emperor's career, and is worth it for new listeners of the group. The second disk cover songs. I would only rcomend for the absoulte die hard fans of the group who feel they must here absolutly everything they have done. I always felt the strongest aspect of the group was the composition, and these cover songs do not show that aspect. Overall I'd recommend this compalation for new listers to sample the genius that is Emperor
Some great stuff on these cds........2006-02-15
I will first by beginning with admittance I never heard of Emperor until I listened to Cradle of Filth and Dimmu, and it was my understanding if you listen to this genre then knowing of Emperor was mandatory. I began with the only CD I could find at the time, and that was IX Equilibrium. I quickly gathered up the other cds, and then came the release of Prometheus, thus the disbanding of Emperor, meaning I'd never get the chance to see them live... Quite a shame...
However, since it was a celebrated event that a band with the talent Emperor does, calling it quits before you ruin your good name releasing crap ( *cough* METALLICA AND SLAYER *cough*) as time moves on... They pump out this release, a compilation of their greatest hits pretty much, spanning their entire career. You get to see how they began, and matured in sound and showmanship with each release, including goodies that you wouldn't have gotten unless Emperor was a part of your local scene in Norway.
Highly reccomended, I'm listening to it right now actually ;)
A Mighty Hail to the Emperor Horde.......2006-02-06
This album has pretty much all of Emperor's greatest songs on it. Curse You All Men! is a perfect opening for a collection of great tracks by one of the greatest black metal bands ever. If you have ever enjoyed Emperor or are looking for more black metal to add to your collection, this is the perfect addition.
I find absolutely nothing wrong with this album.
Progressive Black Metal from the Masters!.......2005-10-06
Emperor started off as a primitive dark metal band and morphed into a gigantic mammoth force of orchestral and symphonic black metal that represents some of the biggest musical talent this genre has ever seen. the the compositions presented here are extremely intricate and hard to follow at times, but quite good and challenging to the listener. i like that. this 2cd is a collection of songs pulled from their past albums and some compilation tracks. i think the compilation tracks are pretty good, but the remix stuff doesn't really grab me. but there is alot of interesting stuff here for diehard fans of this band and those who want to experience the epic blackened attack of Emperor. hail!
So intricate and intelligent, so boring and annoying !.......2005-10-05
I bought this album 2 years ago and every now and then I give it a spin. But I can't get through more than a couple of songs without turning the volume (way) down. The music is so pretentious and bombastic, but fails to really grab me. In fact it becomes quite irritating after a few songs. I don't really like this symphonic type of metal, but Cradle Of Filth at least make their albums fun and pleasant to listen to. Which, from a band like this, is what we want. If I wanted real black metal, I would play some Darkthrone! Some of the early Emperor stuff is ok (if you don't mind the horribly cheap synthesizers), but the newer stuff is unbearable. Packed with too many tempo changes, impossible rhytms, annoying orchestras, bad synths and whining vocals. The high screeches on their early stuff are not my cup of tea either. The reason I give this album 2 stars instead of 1, is because of their big influence on the scene. On the wrong side of the scene, but still. If you like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth and so on, you should get this album. This is where your favourite bands learnt the trick.
