5 out of 5 stars One of the most underated bands ever!.......2007-07-15

Excellent Excellent CD!!!
One of the best sounding guitars that you'll ever hear.
you're a fool if you don't buy this CD. If you don't love it after you buy it, you're a moron and I don't feel a bit sorry for you.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-07-04

its just as i remembered it outstanding cd. too bad after the 2nd cd they went pop this band had alot of potential.great cd

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory Metal.......2007-05-23

*heavyyyyyyy chains*, this album rocks. Akira is a guitar god, this band is Japan's version of early Van Halen. If you are looking for all things 80's metal then this album is Mandatory Metal. Riffs, hooks, shred it's all there!!!

5 out of 5 stars Surprise, Surprise.......2007-01-14

So, there I was, in Frankfurt, Germany, thumbing though some used cd's at the weekly Saturday flea market. I'd picked out some Satriani, Uli Jon Roth and an import Van Halen. The vendor pulled this album out and recommended I also buy it. I'd never heard of them and at first turned him down. Then he offered it to me for just one Euro. I figured that even if it sucked, then at least I had the other five disks that I knew would be worth the ten total Euro I'd spent. WOW!!! What a great album! I'd never even heard of these guys, but I'm going to look into getting more albums. Akira Takasaki can shred along with the likes of Eddie Van Halan and George Lynch. Stand out songs are Clockwork Toys and Never Change Your Mind. The production quality is a bit low. But this album is about 22 years old. A re-release would be cool, but this does just fine. If you like early Van Halen, Cinderella, Dokken, then you'll probably dig these guys, too.

5 out of 5 stars These guys can PLAY!.......2006-09-28

Loudness was unfairly lumped in with all the '80s so-called "hair-metal" bands because of their look (probably due more to mis-management than actual personal styles), and unfortunately that label seemed to have stuck with them, despite the release of 4 brilliant CDs, this one being the first Major Label American release. Led by the "Oh yeah Yngwie? Check THIS out!" guitar work of Akira Takasaki, Loudness was a band of guys who could PLAY, not pose. Yes, the lyrics are fairly simple and sometimes juvenile, but I don't remember anyone else writing anything considered prose at the time either. Especially if you are a guitar player, this CD is a must have. Try to see whether or not you can match up with the straight picked solo in "Clockwork Toy" and then call this mediocre. I don't think so.

5 out of 5 stars Good quality japanese 80's metal.......2007-05-22

When it comes to Loudness'american released english language albums, this one is the best. This is the first Loudness album that incorporated some slight elements of pop but it was just right and would give way to an even poppier sounding next album, Hurricane Eyes although that album was a disappointment because they took that pop sound way too far. This album,Lightning Strikes has great songs and it is a must have for fans of 80's metal. The guitar work of Akira Takasaki is great and is on par with people like Eddie Van Halen. The vocals are great too.Faster paced songs like"Face to Face" and"Black Star Oblivion" sound like speed metal. This band shows that they are versatile as well as being extremely talented.Every 80's metal collection should have Loudness in it.

5 out of 5 stars Unique/Punched in the gut heavy-metal.......2005-09-20

Loudness "Lightning Strikes" I think was one of the most memorable sounding albums I'd ever heard before. The completely unique "riffs" and "japanese styling" in the guitars will not disappoint you 'guaranteed'. This album "kicks" from start to finish and you can listen to it over and over again and it just keeps getting better. I had'nt heard this album for years but hearing it again reminded me of how the music variations could pick you up and "slam you to the ground without remorse". A totally "fingers on fire" guitar assault that's nonstop. This is truly one on my favorites in the "80's Hairbands" genre. Don't miss this one if your a fan of that genre too!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars "start a fire tonight".......2005-07-13

The first album I heard by Loudness was Thunder in the East. It is one of my all-time favorite 1980s metal albums. I did not think I needed to check out any other Loudness record since none could come close to Thunder; at least, that is what I thought. Well, I was wrong. Their next release in 1986 Lightning Strikes demonstrates how lightning can strike twice for a band. I was reluctant at first but, after listening to this album many times, I proclaim Lightning better than Thunder. Every track is amazing and it includes my all-time favorite Loudness track (just topping my previous favorite "No Way Out").

"Let It Go" is an awesome opener. It is an upbeat rocker with addictive hooks. Very accessible. The next track, however, is my all-time favorite Loudness song: "Dark Desire." I can't praise it enough. The guitar riffs are addictive and the pounding drums are incredible! It just makes you want to rock out! I find myself hitting the "repeat track" button on this one (well, actually, I move the needle or push the rewind button). My future metal compilation tapes will always include this track! "1000 Eyes" continues the trend of incredible tracks. It has a powerful opening riff with excellent guitar at the verses up to the chorus. Niihara's vocals at the chorus seem a bit strained, but they do not detract from the song. The song just rocks! "Face to Face" is a fast and blazing track. "Who Knows" is highlighted by Akira Takasaki's guitarwork as is usually the case for Loudness. His playing here is not so much heavy and rocking as it is a virtuoso's style much like Eddie Van Halen.

The second half of the album begins with another stellar track. "Ashes in the Sky" opens with beautiful guitar and vocals then explodes into a powerful song with thundering drums. It is a slower track but with a lot of depth and is also catchy. It offers a superb guitar solo. "Black Star Oblivion" is a furious track with pounding drums and flying guitars. The guitar riff right before the chorus is what I remember the most as well as its killer guitar solo. "Street Life Dream" is an excellent, straight-forward rocker. "Complication" is a nice ending track with pleasant vocals but not losing its rocking edge.

I had thought Thunder was Loudness' zenith but Lightning Strikes shows that there was still a little ways to go before they reached their peak; well, the peak of Loudness with English lyrics anyway. I have not heard the earlier material the band put out in Japan with Japanese lyrics, but I have heard it is incredible. Unfortunately, lightning did not strike again the next year with the disappointing Hurricane Eyes (unlike the Thunder and Lightning, the Hurricane was a true disaster) and, after Niihara was fired from the band, I lost interest.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME Metal from Japan!!!.......2005-02-09

When I first heard the new Loudness single "Crazy Nights" in 1985 that introduced the band to mainstream America, I thought it was a joke. Ok here is some Japanese band that is mimicing all the American hair metal bands in one big cliche. A year later this album came out and I got it and I was completely blown away. This wasn't just some Japanese copy band. They were the real deal. Blistering licks, awesome riffs, catchy rhthyms; I was HOOKED! Forget the vocals and just listen to the voice as another instrument in the mix. It works! Defintely one of the best metal bands not only of the '80's, but ever. I saw them play live around '87 or so and they were awesome. They had fantastic sound, crunching guitars, and it was one of the best shows I ever saw. I wish I could've seen them again. Ah, the good old daze! ;-P

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......2005-01-01

This is probably my all time favorite cd. I remember draggin a friend all around Tampa Florida to find this cd to no avail..alas! the internet was born. EVERY track on here is a masterpiece and the production is second to none..the vocals and guitar are awesome and full of melody!

3 out of 5 stars Good album, but not for fans of Loudness's early material.......2006-12-14

I have always considered Loudness to be Japan's answer to Dokken and Judas Priest. There is some good material on here, but this album is the most poppy sounding one that they had made at that time."In my dreams" and "rock and roll gypsy" are definite skipover tracks."This Lonely Heart" has a great opening with great guitar riffs, but quickly drops off after that. The rest of the songs are decent but overall, this album will not set your world on fire.I recommend the two previous albums,Lightning Strikes and Thunder in the East if want to hear this band's best American released material, although their best material is on the early eighties Japanese import albums which contain no pop at all and are'nt so grossly overproduced like the later releases.

5 out of 5 stars akira .......2006-08-28

shred at its finest akira is the man this is a great album never was a fan of the vocalist but their 80s stuff was amazing

4 out of 5 stars very good album.........2005-08-19

Had this one on tape when it came out..great music! the tracks "this lonely heart" and "rock n' roll gypsy" are some of the best songs from the 80's I thought, but like always a great band fell in the cracks of the hair bands...

5 out of 5 stars "GREAT METAL FROM JAPAN".......2004-05-28

Best Loudness album of all! I got into Loudness right from their early beginnings. I originally bought the albums back in the early 80's and later bought the CD's when they were released. The INPORT price is well worth it. Their first 4 releases were in Japanese but the music is so good that it just doesn't matter. My favorite Loudness song is on this album-"Speed". This is one of the best songs ever!! Akira is one of the best Metal guitarists of all time and on this song, it shows! If you don't know Loudness, start here or with their second release, "Devil Soldier", another outstanding album! If you don't have Loudness in your Metal collection, you're missing out!

5 out of 5 stars Second best studio album........2003-02-05

Disillusion is their best studio album. This album is a close second and was the studio album preceding Disillusion. If you really like this album then you will not be disappointed by Disillusion and visa versa. If you like the later and harder ( and more basic and dull ) version of Loudness then this probably is not for you.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT !!!!.......2001-07-31

THis is LOUDNESS't third album, and it is one of their best ever!!! THe songs shine, real metal classics. Altough the song tittles are in English, the album is sung in Japanese. Fantastic piece of metal, much better than everything they released when they tried to go pop-glam.

great album akira seem to simplfy his rhythme work on this but his tone, solos are amazing. the addition of mike was a greatchange wish it would have happened sooner

5 out of 5 stars Best Loudness Album!!!.......2006-08-22

This is their best work - hands down. Great songwriting with Outstanding guitar, drums and bass!! Unbelievable vocals by American singer Mike Vescera. You can feel the energy between all members with Mike being the new change to the band. No filler, just great metal!!

5 out of 5 stars A searing release - Loudness hits the spot.......2006-02-16

Wow. This was my intro to this band I'd only heard underground rumblings about. This album can be listened to from one end to the other. The searing class of the guitar playing. How this wasn't huge can only be down to a few reasons - a) bad luck or b) poor management or c) the band not being American. My guess is C given that even in 2005 one foreign band was told by their american record company "why would we want bands from overseas when we have our own bands" (not to mention any names).

I'd love to sit here and talk about each track but your better off just buying this album and enjoying it. Michael Vescera is in top form, nobody can accuse him of not trying to make this work - at least in the studio. One track I must mention is Demon Disease. Listen to the damn lyrics. Foreboding but uplifting and that's not an easy line to walk. Not to mention that by the time this album is over you need something emotional to let you down from the blast you've just experienced.

Alas the band didn't hit this high very often, I've reviewed a couple of their other albums for anyone who'd like to check out my thoughts on some of their other releases.

5 out of 5 stars WE ARE THE LOUDNESS GUYS!!.......2006-03-26

well, if all goes well, in a little over 24 hours from now I will once again be seeing this great lineup perform live! It's been quite a while since I've been this psyched about a rock concert but these guys are the real deal! I saw them many moons ago and I couldn't be happier that they decided to tour again. This is a great live album by probably the greatest Japanese rock band ever.
I can only imagine how much bigger they might have been if they had gotten their English down as well as say, the Scorpions did. Half the time I have no idea what the singer is singing about but the music is so good that it does not matter.

Standout songs for me are ROAD RACER, LOUDNESS, SLEEPLESS NIGHTS and the great TUSK OF JAGUAR. Akira Takasaki is an ace guitarist with some great riffs and smokin' leads. I purchased this on vinyl when it came out and still have it. I have been a Loudness fan from way back and this lineup is my favorite. They have the chemistry that Deep Purple MKII had.

Those of you who need to hear all your lyrics in English might not get into this but from a music standpoint this CD is a must-have Loudness release. LIVE-LOUD-ALIVE indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Loudness - 'Live-Loud-Alive:Loudness In Tokyo' (Columbia).......2006-02-19

Have sure missed seeing these Japanese metal veterans.Only time I ever did see them play live was, when they were support act for Motley Crue's 'Theater Of Pain' tour.Anyone else remember that? Also seem to recall another live release from them I had on cassette, just can't seem to find it at the moment.Anyway,if you ever even happen to have just one or two of their vinyl lp's,CD's or tapes, you will more than likely be glad to get 'Live-Loud-Alive...'.This CD like totally S-M-O-K-E-S!!Tracks that I found to be superior were "Road Racer","Black Wall",the band's namesake "Loudness",the rocking "Sleepless Nights" and "Burning Love".Should appeal to fans of Bow Wow,Ratt,Kix,EZO,Fastway and AC/DC(specially Bon Scott-era material). An absolute must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Loudness as we know them: great...and loud!.......2005-09-16

If you're a fan of Loudness, this album is a must for you. If you like "Law of Devil's land", you won't be sorry since many songs of this album are present on this live version.
Exploder - Akira Takasaki's response to Van Halen's "Eruption"-
is played even faster (and as well)on this than on "Disillusion".
The recording is pretty good and the selection of songs is showing a large variety of styles.
Loudness is not doubt one of the finest Heavy Metal band ever. This live album is giving them credit for it and their fans can - once again - enjoy another living proof of that fact.

4 out of 5 stars Great Starter Album to Early Loudness.......2005-06-11

Luckily for me, I lived in Germany back in the 80's and had access to all the early Loudness records that were released by Roadrunner in that country. This is a decent place to start if you want to find out what the big hubbub was all about with Loudness.

The LP is a gatefold, so you can do cleaning on it, if you know what I mean. The photos are great. Loudness had the whole "wall of Marshall stacks" stage setup going on. The live versions are very comparable to the studio versions. There's even the title track from Akira Takasaki's solo album on here, "Tusk of Jaguar."

"Roadracer" is great, it's kind of a galloping, poppy rocking song in the vein of "Barracuda" by Heart. One of the funniest/coolest things about this album is the between-song banter from Minoru Nihaara, the singer. He'll ask questions in Japanese (of course, it's in Tokyo!) and then throw out a few English phrases in broken/rough English, ("Are you ready?") and then roll out a Japanese phrase and then you hear him say the name of the song ("Animanalushi shigon sowan...I Was the...Suuuunnn!"). Speaking of "I Was The Sun" - it's a pretty killer tune as well. Kinda slow and grungy with a just out of control guitar solo. Think of Frampton's "I'll give you money" with J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. doing his solo from "Thumb" in the middle - brilliant.

Anyway, Loudness isn't for everybody, but I always do like digging this LP out of my collection and rocking out.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid metal record.......2006-01-16

In 1985, Loudness burst into the American metal scene with Thunder In The East, an album that solidified the band's presence as a full-frontal '80s metal band with a unique approach to the genre. A year later, Shadows Of War (which is essentially the same album as Lightning Strikes disguised in a different wrapper) was released, and proves to be a fitting follow-up to the band's debut in the United States.

While it's true that Loudness underwent a style change after experiencing success in the U.S., Shadows Of War still contains the edge that characterized their previous albums. In fact, I find Shadows Of War to be a perfect blend between pop metal and heavy metal; the music still contains the hard-driving riffs and the blazing fast (yet tasteful) guitar solos, but now included are poppier-sounding choruses, often resulting in memorable hooks that will stay in your head fresh for months.

I give this album a 4.5 out of 5. The only thing I feel is missing is perfect consistency; some choruses are catchier than others, and some riffs are stronger than others. For me, none of the songs ever come close to crossing into the "intolerable" zone. That's better than I can say for many other albums that I've heard. This is definitely one of my favorite albums. If you're a fan of 1980s metal (especially '80s metal with a pop and commercial edge to it, though refer to the "consistency" comment above), then this album should interest you.

Album Description

Jack Dangers, founder of the legendary Meat Beat Manifesto, has returned with his second double album on Important Records. Following the success of Forbidden Planet Explored, Dangers' soundtrack for the legendary sci-fi film Forbidden Planet, he has brought us a brand new Meat Beat-style manifestation and a collection of 10 years worth of his electro-acoustic musique concrete. 'Loudness Clarifies/Electronic Music From Tapelab' brings forth both sides of Jack Dangers' multi-dimensional audio personality into one single commercial package neatly designed by Almighty. From the distant, careful experimentalism found in 'Music From Tapelab' to the dance floor-oriented 'Loudness Clarifies,' we experience Dangers as a whole musical entity. While we don't want to oversimplify his many musical branches, this double CD is the ultimate example of the depth and breadth of this groundbreaking and highly influential electronic artist.

Disc 1 is a Meat Beat Manifesto style beats-and-breaks workout/overhaul of the musique concrete material from disc two. Like a dance party in a classroom, 'Loudness Clarifies' combines the more academic aspects of Jack Dangers music with the absolute beat of his work in Meat Beat Manifesto. The result is an exotic, textured deep bass breakout from the king of dance floor.

Disc 2 is a collection of electro-acoustic musique concrete for film, radio and television, recorded at Tapelab over the last 10 years.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Half Bad . . . .......2005-05-22

After listening to Forbidden Planet Explored, I was pretty disapointed. Then I heard Loudness Clarifies, I was pretty stoked to hear the bass and beats from my speakers. There are some great tracks like "Solid Gold", "Super Hit 9" and "Boss Society." The album is a great update on what Jack is headed and where he is. Yet, listening to the second disc was pretty boring, and bland as Wonderbread with water. It's almost as if Jack didn't put enough spacey garbage on Forbidden Planet that he had to ruin this great album. Oh well, the actual music is great and a pleasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Packed!.......2005-05-21

A good thing about Jack Dangers is that he is not out to rip people off. For real. The songs in this 2 cd set are no exception. The songs are full of synth work, signature pounding drums, and elements of musique concrete. Fans of Dangers will recognize traces of earlier efforts in this album, but will be unable to deny that there is something new, too-- an almost indie element of raw and distorted sounds, perfectly capturing the agression, assertion and frustration of being into the meat of the beat. The second disc contains examples of ambience as hilarious as it is proficient-- as restless and unable to sit still as it would seem that Dangers himself is.

5 out of 5 stars Lots going on here............2004-12-31

A well packaged, quality release from the godfather of aggressive electronic music.
Genre defying, mind manipulating, hardware overload are just a few ways to describe this album. Disc 1 is a glimpse into the TapeLAb studio with rythem and spice, but this trip requires more of a sit down audience rather then a danceing one. Disc 2 explores sound effects and ambient delights in the TapeLab. I;ve had a lot of fun using these sounds in Dj mixes and intervals between songs, even in the background of some too.
I'm on my 4th or 5th listen and ive still got a lot of sounds to pick up on. There is literally tons and tons of audio crunched up in these songs. Youll know right away from the first track this is going to require some effort to indulge all that Jack has offered. Don't be put off though, its quite fun to come back to an album like this and discover new audio avenues everytime!

5 out of 5 stars Another Genre-Defying Masterpiece from the Godfather.......2004-11-29

Jack Dangers has pioneered so many electronic musical genres over the past 2 decades, it's almost impossible to listen to dance music without hearing his touch these days. Whether it's the alternative hip hop scene he forged in the late 80's, the 'big beat' sound he became associated with in the early 90's, the first footsteps into jungle he took, or the more dub-inspired route his work has gone since, anything this man touches is worth a listen. Although most of his work is instrumental these days, his biting raps & Lennon-like vocals on social, environmental, and humane issues fused some of the most intelligent lyrics with a surrealist view that stands apart. If you've never heard of Jack or Meat Beat Manifesto, do yourself a favor and buy everything you can find by him!
