From the band name to the album title of their dozen-song debut, it's clear Dope don't shy away from controversy. In fact, the quintet embraces discord with songs like "America the Pitiful" and "Pig Society" that posit the band as a more angry and political (if less dramatic and provocative) Marilyn Manson. Modern metal melds with techno touches on the majority of the carefully wrought songs of Edsel Dope, who, along with real-life brother Simon Dope, formed the band. While they're not all that incendiary (though they deserve a parental-advisory sticker), Dope have nonetheless made a powerful debut. From the irresistible kick of "Sick" to the Ministry-meets-Rob Zombie "One Fix," to vocal effects on the cool groove of "Kimberley's Ghost," the album fits right into the Ozzfest Nation's aggro consciousness. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars an excellent debut from an amazing band.......2006-09-05

Dope is any concert-goer's dream! I've seen them twice already (touring with Cold, Mushroomhead, Lifer...) and they are a band built for the metal crowd! On this CD Dope introduces themselves to the world with garbled vocals and extremely energetic guitars. SPEEDMETAL!

Their other three albums that came after this have a cleaner, touched up sound compared to this one, but they all share the same enrgy. The lead singer (Edsel Dope) shows more singing talent on the next albums, but this CD rocks anyway.

If you're looking for the extra track, this CD doesn't seem to have one. But you can find them on "TAKE A BITE OUTTA RYHME: A ROCK TRIBUTE TO RAP" where Dope covers "New Jack Hustler" and "WWF: FORCEABLE ENTRY" where Dope provides a track called "No Chance".

If you like this CDs raw energy and anger, then check out their latest album "American Apathy" and try to get the limited CD/DVD combo--it's well worth it! "American Apathy" combines "Felons..." energy with the clean sound of their "Life" and "Group Therapy" albums.

SEE THEM LIVE IF YOU CAN! THEY ARE EVEN LOUDER AND MORE ENERGETIC IN CONCERT!!

3 out of 5 stars Musically fine but..........2006-04-15

Just plain boring, and I don' know, this might be personal but I hate the way this album was recorded, it's much too flat, like every instrument has tuned themselves to the same level in everything. They have good ideas musically and lyrically but maybe the guy should revise the verb sing, what he does is alter between crude chilling screaming, to monotone flat talking. seriously it sounds like the guy is talking to himself most of the time! Buy this album if you're into that sort of industrial but I'm not so I didn't like it. (This is more of 2 1/2)

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2005-08-15

this is an awesome cd. i had bought "life" a few months ago and loved it, which is what made me buy this cd along with group therapy. they are all great cd's and i would say that dope is probably one of the best bands out there(along with slipknot, korn, and nonpoint.) this is a great addition to any metal collection.

4 out of 5 stars Bonus track...wha?.......2005-07-16

So I got this CD, and I love Dope and all, but where is my bonus track I was promised. I bought this CD SPECIFICALLY because I love Dope's "You spin me round" remix. So I open the cd when it arrives, throw it in my CD player, and immediately go to track 14... or I would have... if there WAS a track 14. So I said ok, maybe it's hidden with another song. I listened to the whole CD, all the way through, and there was NO extra song... I WANT MY EXTRA SONG DANGIT!!!

4 out of 5 stars Umm I Don't Think So.......2005-03-06

Okay, first of all... Brian Warner (Marilyn Manson) Ego Maniac? I dont think so. Apparently you know little to nothing about him for you to be saying that. Second of all I agree with what some other reviews were saying that just because you both dislike the same thing doesn't make you "ripping off" the other person. And lastly... Marilyn Manson has put out far more music and been around much longer and still kept his greatness despite millions of band member changes. So to say that he's fading, every band fades but Manson is still great and will be for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Gold, pure gold.......2005-05-13

I remember working the fryer at Runza in 92 when Kroll told me there was a group a little birdie told him about called Convicted Felons getting ready to drop their first plate on the music world. Kroll was the first to tell me how awesome matchbox 20 was so I took his word for it that this convicted felons group would be top of the line. Boy howdy was he correct. He wasn't frontin at all. When I saw the album title, "The year of the Ho niggas is over" I knew this thing was going to be solid because I had been telling my friends that for weeks already. This thing comes out of the box on fire and keeps it going like Orel Hershiser in 88. I like all of the tracks except, "Pusherman" which made no sense in the flow of this joint. The best track on this and maybe the finest rap single ever release this side of Superbowl Shuffle is "Hustlers against Dirty ass cops". I had a hard time figuring out which side of the fence the convicted felons were on with this song because I'm extremely dumb, but the beat is doper than Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam playing Ibiza in 84. Yeah, you know it!! I bought this for my parents for Christmas and my dad, though 57 is totally down with this sound and the lyrics. He grew up in rural Nebraska and Chuck didn't front. Let that be a lesson to you kids in Fremont that think Gretna is not going to be a playa in Class B. Get this disc and increase the piece.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Westcoast Compilation.......2006-02-20

This is a great compilation with some of Cali's finest: T-Nutty, Cyco, G-MAcc all good rappers in my opinion. The best song on here is Paper Rout by Nyke Loc every thing comes off tight on that one, the hook sounds great. I also like The Way We Ride despite the fact that I had already heard it on a Garden Blocc compilation called Blocc Love, but it's a great song regardless. You can listen to most of the album without skipping a song that song by Dre Loc is okay 2.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than Ho Niggas.......2005-07-06

And that's making quite a statement. Convicted Felons are everything that is right with Rap today. It's hard hitting rhymes about how the man is keeping us down. I'm white, but I can totally relate. I was speeding one night and the cops pulled me over in my renault alliance with the leather top. I told them the renault was only capable of going 45 with the gerbils running full speed in the engine, and then I told them to step off because there was real crime to fight. What you get from Convicted felons is a much more mature sound in the '01 than you got in tha '93. The year of the Ho Niggas album was rough and raw, it was angry like Kenny Rogers near a camera. This album was smoothed out and refined. Are the felons still angry? Darn tootin they are, but their approach to the man is laid out in much better terms this time around. I think we can all see what they're saying. I am just plum confused about why these boyz didn't get mad airplay on hot 97. I think it's just another case of the man not wanting to hear the message and I'm not talking D-Nice.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......2005-09-28

I can't imagine any rap group being better than convicted felons. They represent Cincy very well and the city should should be proud of them. It's like members of the basketball team wrote songs talking about what goes on in the life of a Bob Huggins team. Nothing tops Ctown projects. I feel like I live there. Growing up in West Omaha, I understand projects much better than you do. I know what it is like to run through gunfire to get to your schoolbus, what it is like to have people dealing crack in front of the pizza place. That was life in west O in the mid 90s. It's gotten a little better from what I've heard, but I'm old school. There is another track on this thing called Poverty Anthem that is pretty good. It's different than the poverty anthem I wrote. Here's mine:

      Dang, I'm hungry
      You gonna eat that roll?
      Seriously, I'm pretty hungry
      You gonna eat your chowder?
      Dude, I'm starved
You gonna eat that corn dog?
Give me the corn dog now
or I will hit you with a stick

That hits home much more than other songs you could write. I'm so superior to others as a writer, hell, as a person in general that everything I do tends to turn the tide of history. I'm friends with people like J Abs,Kroll and Burns that do the same things. While you're at home wondering what your wife is cooking for dinner, your wife is wondering why she's with you instead of someone like us. Think about it.

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Review.......2003-11-10

OK, I actually purchased this album several years ago, but recently I decided to go back and read the reviews to figure out what others thought of what I consider to be one of the last real rock bands. I must say I was shocked by some of the responses given. I must have read the word rip-off atleast 10 times, and all I have to say to that is this: What band these days isn't, atleast in some form, a rip-off of another band? This band just happens to pull it off better than most I have heard in the past. I also believe that by putting their own twist on the style that they define themselves as one of the best bands to emerge during the late 90's. Yeah, you might say that raging against the system is nothing more than a cliche now, but atleast they make it sound good. I went on to read one review where it was said that the lead singers voice was "terrible." This to me just says that America has gotten so far into a mainstream perspective that it can't handle when someone comes out and changes things up a bit. I'll get off my soapbox, but all in all this is one hell of an album. If you find yourself getting tired of the regurgitated garbage coming from bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn, you might want to pick this up and give it a listen. I consider it to be a ray of light in hoping that maybe actual metal isn't quite dead.

1 out of 5 stars Not ["everything sucks"] (just this album).......2000-10-13

Oh boy... another political nu-metal band. Just what the world needs. With horrendously clichéd song titles like "Pig Nation," and "America the Pitiful," it surprises me that anyone takes these guys seriously at all. Strip away their "political" notions, and dope is just another generic metal band. Not very hard, with boring, down tuned guitars, and an absolutely TERRIBLE lead singer. It sounds like the guy got picked on in high school and listened to way too much Marilyn Mansion. Akin to a bastardized hybrid of Rage Against the Machine (the politics), White Zombie (industrial crunch), and (of course) Mr. Mansion, dope leaves nothing to the imagination, and no reason to buy this piece of garbage. If you want some real politically charged metal, check out One Minute Silence, System of a Down, Downset, and of course, RATM.

        4 out of 5 stars melodic,indusrial metal.......2000-10-05

I would definately not say this is a genre defining album. It is basically the average industrial metal album.Yet;the main aspect of this album, that keeps me listening to the disc,is the instant melodies and hard hitting grooves. In my opnion,it actually does not matter, whether the music i listen to is genre defining or not(and trust me this disc is not),i enjoy music with enjoyable grooves and melodies.Dope's:"felons and Revolutionaries",combines the furious industrial metal of classic white zombie, with instant sugary guitar hooks,of many alternative rock bands operating on the scene today. The lyrics are somwehat anti establishment and should appeal to teenagers that do not have jobs,or have a dislike for school and authority. Dope basically, are angry so called-drug dealers that hate the system for personal reasons and enjoy letting the entire world know about this.I am not saying that their message is negative,i'm just implying that it is a tad cliched.Well,to conclude;the music makes up for this slacker like rage.If you enjoy your industrial metal brutal yet melodic at the same exact time,in a present moment(with a little rapcore rantings)then purchase Dope's:"felons and revolutionaries"from amazon.com now!

1 out of 5 stars complete and utter garbage.......2000-10-01

this band is NOT METAL! it is bad music for posers only. if you wat real metal buy some morbid angel, nile, or slayer. this cd isnt worth anything. throw this cd away. it sounds BAD.

5 out of 5 stars Dope is cool.......2000-09-16

Dope is a cool band. I heard of them through my friend. It is really cool, his uncle is actually the drummer for the band! When he told me about them, I downloaded a song from them on mp3. Now I have a couple, and I want the album.
