5 out of 5 stars Catch the Rainbow: The Anthology.......2007-01-12

I love this CD. DIO is one of my favorite singers and he did not disappointment me with this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Rainbow - 'Catch The Rainbow: the Anthology' (Polydor).......2007-01-07

Twenty-eight track, 2-CD pick of just what the title reads, an anthology of Rainbow's repertoire 1975-83. I don't mean to be fussy about it, but this could have JUST as easily been cut to a single-disc release. I'll likely play disc one more than disc two, because it's got tunes like "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves", "Catch The Rainbow", "Starstruck", "Mistreated" and "Long Live Rock 'N Roll". Disc two has their later, so-so cuts such as "Since You've Been Gone"(yawn!), "All Night Long" (actually like this cut), "Can't Happen Here", "Stone Cold" and an eleven-minute live performance of "Difficult To Cure". Would make a nice gift.

5 out of 5 stars A fine anthology.......2006-10-26

This is the way to do an anthology. We get great mastering and nice song selections. Unfortunately, there is also no way to please everyone.

Many lament the end of the first edition of Rainbow and their foray into the commercial scene. Personally, I first heard the band during the Stone Cold days so I really like this part of their history.

This set brings back great memories and it introduced me to their earlier music. 5 stars all the way.

5 out of 5 stars Blackmore at his best..........2006-09-23

First of all, let me say that Ritchie Blackmore is my favorite guitarist. He is arguably one of the best ever. I have been a fan since Deep Purple and I feel he did his best work with Rainbow. This collection is an excellent overview of their work. New fans will find the best from each of the group's albums and longtime fans will like having these highlights in one great 2 disc set.
The first disc covers the "Dio Years". These songs show just what a virtuoso player Blackmore is, he has the ability to play with both crunching power and gentle beauty. These songs also introduced everyone to Ronnie James Dio, who is simply one of the best singers in hard rock/metal history. I really wonder how big they could have gotten if they had stayed together. Standout songs on this disc include; Man On The Silver Mountain, Sixteenth Century Greensleeves, Stargazer, Long Live Rock 'N' Roll and Gates Of Babylon.
The second disc covers the albums recorded with Graham Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. Many people bash this era as when Rainbow "sold out". First of all, the songs are more radio friendly - that's not a crime. Secondly, Dio was no longer the lyricist and not everyone is going to write songs with medieval themes. The groups biggest "hits" are here as well as some great straightforward rocking songs. Favorites include; Since You Been Gone, All Night Long, I Surrender, Stone Cold, Can't Let You Go and Street Of Dreams. Also included is the live version of Difficult To Cure(performed with a full orchestra) which is possibly Blackmore's greatest guitar work - EVER!
The CD also has a very good booklet/artwork that gives a brief history of the band and a discography. Blackmore also released Stranger In Us All(with another Rainbow lineup) and has his current project Blackmore's Night.
If you are a fan of great music buy this CD. It has something for everyone - unbelievable guitar work, great vocals and great songs.

Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore - Catch The Rainbow.

3 out of 5 stars Good anthology, but one-disc version is better........2006-08-28

This two disc set spanning Rainbow's entire career sounds like a good idea, and for the most part it is. However, the reality is that most people who are fans of this band are only interested in material off the first three albums with Dio, and anything after that is written off as commerical drivle by them. If you are one of those fans, you might be dissapointed by this as disc-two is completey devoted to post-Dio years. O.K., i DO like *Down To Earth*, which i thought was a great album, but i really disliked the direction Blackmore took the band with Turner at the helm. Pretty much 90% of disc-two is Joe Lynn Turner stuff with big chunks taked off of the *Difficult To Cure* and *Straight Between The Eyes* albums, and a little bit from *Bent Out Of Shape*. I find most of the stuff they did with him to be mediocore and forgettable, with the exception of a few songs like "Stone Cold" and "Street of Dreams" which are among the band's best.

Find out "The Very Best Of Rainbow" instead of this, you get all the best songs from the Dio years and only the worthwhile songs put out durring the commercial years with Bonnet and Turner.
