Back in the 70s, the double-LP version of this UH album was as popular as "Frampton Comes Alive". However the CD version issued in the U.S. by Mercury/Universal IS NOT COMPLETE (UGH!). If you want to have the full LP edit, get the UK Castle edition, which includes among others the unforgettable "Rock'n Roll Medley".

I am partial to this live recording as my wife and I were in the Birmingham audience when it was recorded.

Just like the Scorpions, Black Widow, Fingerprintz, Curved Air, Middle Of The Road, etc. I find Uriah Heep's live versions to be superior to their studio recordings.

This CD is a must for any UH fan!

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ALBUMS AND I MEAN REALLY
LIVE! FROM SUNRISE TO LOVE MACHINE IT ROCKS! DAVID BYRON
WAS A GREAT SINGER. KEN HENSLEY WAS A AWESOME SONGWRITER.
THE ENTIRE BAND WAS GREAT MUSICIANS. THE ONLY FLAW IS
THE SONGS LEFT OFF FROM THE ALBUM VERSION? ANYWAY IT

Okay for starters I ran into Ken Hensely when he was a member of the band BlackFoot and he kind of winced when I brought up this record. He seemed to appreciate the general support which I had for the band but didn't at all wish to dwell on this record choosing to focus on other Heep topics. Perhaps that should tell you something....

Anyway that encounter aside, there was a trend in the record industry at the time of the release of this album for bands to release live recordings since they , among other things, bought the bands time as they prepared for future studio work. Also recall that live recordings were perhaps they only way for those who missed the shows to somehow experience the concert. Still. this album doesn't capture the band at its best in terms of performance. I'm willing to forgive some of the fidelity issues as it was years before ProTools and Mastering PlugIns though Heep has performed much better in concert than was documented on this release. Obviously this is a matter of opinion and you will find Heep heads arguing about this endlessly but despite the high hopes I had for this album I was let down.

On the plus side the original album release (Which I still have) does have a detailed inset on each of the band members which is , unintentionally, very funny and sort of presages Spinal Tap. See the sections on Lee Kerslake and Mick Box. I will say this. Gary Thain is a great bass player if not a bit busy at times but certainly no more so than Chris Squire yet with more soul and R&B influence. So you do have that going for you should you wish to investigate this.

I have to start by saying I'm a BIG early Heep fan. Up until High and Mighty I thought they could do no wrong. They are often said to be a poor man's Deep Purple. Maybe. But Heep was much more diversified than Purple. They both had the same lineup: guitar, bass, keyboard, drummer, and singer. However, Heep had 2 lead singers, background harmony vocals, and Hensley doubled on keyboards and guitar.

Now, about this live album. In my opinion, Uriah Heep never really transferred from studio to live very well. Often times, the guitar is mixed down to the point of sometimes being difficult to hear. And the background harmonies were sometimes out of tune, and the harmonies is one of the characteristics of UH that set them apart from alot of other bands. With that being said, this is still the best live album I've heard Heep put out. All the classics are here, even though most of them don't sound much at all like the studio versions. That's not necessarily bad. They do have an intensity and 'feel' to them that gives the impression that they are having a hoot performing them. I've seen this particular lineup in concert 2 times and they were good. But,personally, I prefer a live version of a song to be very similar to the studio version but with Heep you don't get that. Specifically, the guitar solo in the studio version of Look at Yourself is 40 seconds of wah-wah pedalling that will send chills down your spine. The live version is kind of watered down. Also, the intro to LAY sounds like they are leading in to Easy Living. It fools me every time.

Overall, a nice live album. 5 stars for song selection and a 4 for their performances.

      Wow! Awesome live show captured in London in 2000. Former Heep members Lawton, Hensley and Newton still sound phenomenal. Lawton's talented band help to give the old Uriah Heep standards genuine, honest renditions. If you are a fan of 1970's era Uriah Heep or just great classic rock, this is worth adding to your collection. The production and quality are first rate. As far as effort and overall energy, this is superior to the two Wetton/Hensley live releases from the following year(2001).

      I had the pleasure of seeing Heep live (and meeting the band members) for the first time at one of the concerts featured here, and all I can say is that if there's a better live band, or a nicer bunch of guys, I've yet to encounter them. A must-have. (Kudos especially to vocalist Bernie Shaw, who had to sing most of the set leaning on the drum riser after twisting his ankle on a loose cable on stage!)
