brilliant much better than i thought it would be some great covers
Shadows Of Knight - 'Dark Sides:The Best Of...' (Atlantic) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-08-02
An excellent compilation, with a total of twenty tracks. Most fans should totally dig about every cut here.Tunes that draw you in are "Gloria","Dark Side",their minor hit "Oh,Yeah","Light Bulb Blues",Willie Dixon's "You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover","I'm Gonna Make You Mine" and "I'll Make You Sorry".The CD's last two cuts,"Alone" and "I Am The Hunter" among a few others I believe are from a later version of the band which the sole original member was vocalist Jim Sohns. There's no denying it,but 'Dark Sides:The Best Of...' can EASILY be said to define the '60's garage rock era.A must-have.
Back to the New Place.......2006-03-29
I grew up in the suburban Chicago Area in the mid-60's. My friends and I frequently went to a teen club called the New Place hoping to find girls and to see local acts threatening to break out on the national scene - The Cryan' Shames, the New Colony Six, and the Shadows of Night. Appropriately named, the Shadows really were the Dark Side, playing harder, raunchier songs than either of the other two well-scrubbed acts. I don't think I have ever had a CD bring a smile to my face more quickly than this one. The Shadows were bad, unpolished, and wild. They captured the essence of the times, and still have a punk, in-your-face sound. I'm Gonna Make You Mine is about as politically incorrect as you can get. This is a great disc.
Please shut the window!.......2004-07-03
The Shadows of Knight were a blues based garage rock band best known for their Top Ten hit cover of Them's "Gloria". They were never able to duplicate the success of "Gloria", although they made some good attempts. The only other real hit they had was a cover of Bo Diddley's "Oh Yeah", which barely managed to crack the Top 40. This CD features most of their singles (a-sides and b-sides) and some notable album tracks. The first seven tracks are from their first album, and they are blues based rock songs at their best. After that, they decided to experiment a bit more on their second album, with somewhat mixed results. There are six songs from their second album, plus three non-LP singles from about the same time period. After that the group broke up, but singer Jim Sohns hired some new musicians to continue the group name. This new Shadows (actually Sohns and some studio musicians) almost had a hit with the bubblegum song "Shake". That was followed up by another fine bubblegum song, "My Fire Department Needs a Fireman", which was a total flop. The "new" Shadows recorded the group's third album, which was a strange mishmash of blues based garage rock and bubblegum. Significantly, only one song from that album is included here. The Shadows of Knight struggled on and recorded one final single, the early 70s hard rock style "I am the Hunter". It flopped, and the band was never heard from again. Let's get outta here! I'm done now!
One of my all-time favorite bands!.......2004-04-28
Every time I think of or even hear these guys name, one song immediately pops into my head, "Gospel Zone." It's not the first song I ever heard from them, but I find it to be their best. (and my personal SOK favorite) I have to admit, I don't have this disc but I have some of the tracks included here and have heard quite a few more. This is going to be my first Shadows of Knight CD purchase. I gave it 5 stars based on what songs I am familiar with because I'm seeing some really great ones here. This looks very, very good!
I have an incredibly clean mono copy of "Back Door Men" on Dunwich (found it used when I worked in a record store around '88) and was struck by the quality of the production when I first played it. "Gospel Zone" wrapped me around it's finger right away because of the guitar intro, the usual outstanding drumming, (these guys had a FANTASTIC drummer, possibly one of the best in rock's entire history) and the hand claps on the chorus. I'm a sucker for hand claps! And when they're compressed to the point where they sound like they explode they become irresistable. It reminds me of Mick Avory's drums on "It's Alright" by the Kinks. That track is also heavily compressed, (and that's not always a good thing, but sometimes it works). The production suited this song and it's arrangement perfectly. I love this track!

Vitamins for your ears!!.......2006-05-22
This is so welcome it's unbelievable. These B-sides were scattered all over the place (literally) amongst my vinyl collection. Great to have them in one place. Really showcases their creativity and their experimental side, which set them apart from their peers, and was always their greatest strength. Nice graphics, too. This and the Peel sessions disc are fantastic. Now we just need a dvd of EARLY OMD consisting of TOTP, OGWT, promotional clips, etc. (Pre-Crush). Hello, record companiies??
Brand New Old OMD Music.......2003-12-18
I have been an avid fan of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark for 20+ years, and thought I had heard everything. Since there is so many rare releases on the recording, when I heard this CD for the first time, it was like listening to a brand new OMD cd from the early 80's. Fantastic!! I especially like Concrete Hands and Navigation.
Brilliant must-have for OMD fans.......2003-09-10
The B-Sides covers their entire career but I think it gives an especially good representation of early OMD. Absolutely stunning music on this collection for fans of the period techno. It went straight into my listening rotation as soon as I got it two months ago and has been there ever since.
I Like It a Lot!.......2003-04-09
I like this one a lot. I'm more of a fan of their lesser-known music anyway.
Get it while you can!.......2002-09-26
I've been a serious OMD fan for nearly 15 years now, and their music never tires, bores or gets old to me. OMD comes from a time in music when it was worthwhile for the fan to purchase singles. OMD was notorious for leaving excellent songs off their albums, so I was never disappointed. I was always delighted to discover a new beautiful piece of OMD hiding, playing hard to get. I've collected OMD flip sides (through my own research and through well-intentioned friends) on square shaped records, 45's and 33's, tapes and 3 inch CDs! Trying to take those songs for a car ride always presented a challenge and never sounded as good.
Thanks to all who have listened to the fans' requests for producing this collection because now I have some of my favorite songs in one place, in one well-made collection that can go with me anywhere! Songs like "4-Neu", "Sacred Heart" and "Navigation" exemplify OMD's ability to make sweet, beautiful and almost surreal music. These songs are a good example of why I've loved OMD for this long and will continue to do so until my dying day. "Garden City", "The Avenue", "Firegun", "This Town", "Gravity Never Failed", "Burning" and all the rest... these are all fantastic songs that poor deprived OMD fans have got to hear!! If you love what OMD does for music, then you will love this album. It is a MUST BUY for anyone who calls himself an OMD fan.
In my humble opinion, there isn't enough OMD in this world, and at the same time, their B-sides are so much harder to get nowadays compared to when I built up most of my collection. Really now... how many fans can say they've seen and own "Crush -- the Movie", an OMD documentary? I only have it because I was at the right place at the right time.
The record companies need to dust off their copies of OMD songs and videos and share with the rest of us already, make it more easily accessible! ...
Anyway, I love this collection. I recommend it. Go for it!!

Great music - but for completists only.......2006-01-29
This is a great little ep cd, however all these tracks are available elsewhere (on Fatal Portrait, Abigail, & Them reissue cds) at the time of original release this was the only place to get "Phone call" (part of the "Them" concept, I remember making a "Them" cassette including this track from this album) or "No Presents For Christmas" originally only available as a single... but with these tracks readilly available makes this ep redundant now... great music, unbelievable vocals (it is King Diamond after all),great tracks, but if you are a completist then buy, but understand that this (as is all "best of's" I guess) has no exclusive music
THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM FOR KING DIAMOND FANS!!!!.......2005-02-25
The King Diamond "DARKSIDES E.P." was actually originally released as a "filler" album with some "RARE" tracks at the time of it's original release. The tracks come from the following releases: #1 "HALLOWEEN"-(FATAL PORTAIT), #2 "THEM"-(Andy La Roques's beautifully played intrumental piece! - THEM), #3 "NO PRESENTS FOR CRHISTMAS"-( originally released as it's own single and later re-released on the "FATAL PORTRAIT" REMASTERED CD as a BONUS TRACK), #4 "SHRINE"-( originally released as the B-side to the "FAMILY GHOST" single and later re-released on the "ABIGAIL" REMASTERED CD as a BONUS TRACK), #5 "LAKE"-(FATAL PORTRAIT), #6 "THE PHONE CALL"-( at the time of the "DARKSIDES E.P." this was the only place you could find this track, which ties into the "THEM" concept album story. It was later released ONLY in CD FORM (NOT LP or CASSETTE Tape version) it can also be found NOW on the "THEM" REMASTERED CD).This really IS a great well put together short album, it IS definately worth picking up and has a great cover picture of a CLOSE-UP of King Diamond's Make-up. This also is a great introduction to the band if you are a NEW listener!! This album in it's time certainly served it's purpose for us King Diamond fans while we were in between albums ("THEM" to "CONSPIRACY") and really adds to your King Diamond collection!! The production on this E.P. is excellent and it really packs quite a punch for being so short!!Check it out for yourself! In MY opinion I DON'T think you will be dissapointed!!! LONG LIVE THE KING!!! and LONG LIVE METAL!! (PS:) Be sure to check out ALL King Diamond's albums out for More TERRIFIC HORROR STORIES and EXCELLENT QUALITY MUSICIANSHIP!!!!
It's your Grandmother..........!.......2001-06-25
"The Dark Sides" is nothing to scream about, but if you don't have songs like "Shrine" and "The Lake", then this album is for you! Mainly a list of King's B-sides songs. "Shrine" is possibly one the bands' finest.

An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28
I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.
Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.
I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.
I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.
Recommended.

More in the Factory vein.......1999-08-18
Soundtrackish instrumental music encompassing and transcending genres from rock to classical guitar to drum-n-bass... almost any given song is worth the album's price. Music left on the Factory Blue cutting floor, to continue the movie metaphor, plus a few others. There is a clear delineation of styles between the moody Factory Blue material and the remaining few tracks, which are generally more upbeat. However, the entire album is, like the rest of Gooding's opus, utterly brilliant.
