    1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

5 out of 5 stars brutally honest - a full on attack of the mainstream.......2005-03-17

I had never really heard the music of My Ruin, but I had heard of them through word of mouth. The Horror Of Beauty caught my eye one day while browsing in the music section of Circuit City, and I unashamedly picked up the album sheerly by "image" alone.
What I wasn't prepared for was the brutality in which each song was delivered. What pleased me though was how Tairrie B. took a full on assault on the cheese-fest that we're subjected to on a daily basis, via the media. Most of you may not enjoy the blood curdling screams, but once you get beyond the screaming and really get down to the bare bones of it, Tairrie is delivering a message of empowerment to those who are tired of the "cheese-fest", and to those who feel the need to live up the industry's idea of what is "beautiful". I praise Tairrie for putting it all on the table, and saying it outright. It's fantastic to see someone tackle the issue head on instead of beating around the bush.
I would encourage everyone to at least sit down, and truly listen to this album in its entirety, and listen to what Auntie Tairrie is saying and learn from it...

    3 out of 5 stars Eh..........2005-01-18

While I cannot say that I own this album, or have listened to it in it's entirety, I can say one thing. All of the guitar riffs sound nearly identical. If I were not to know which songs were playing, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Riff recycling is a trap that far too many metal bands seem to fall into.

Frankly, from what I heard on the samplers, this just doesn't live up to some of Tairrie B's other work. But, if this is one of those bands that to you can do no wrong, like Placebo is for me, then go ahead and buy it.

It gets three stars due to lyrics, and that I have a fondness for Tairrie B & My Ruin, just not when it comes to this album.

5 out of 5 stars way better than that kittie crap.......2004-09-04

this album is incredibly heavy and awesome and way better than that kittie crap, which i consider to be a sry excuse for metal.
my ruin, however is just what your looking for if u wanna headbang to some chicks that can sing real metal. tarrie b's unfogiving lyrics will have u craving for more. bring on the girl power baby!! these girls kick some major ass. the album is filled with rants and raves about pressure to stay thin, not being drop dead gorgeous, and all the fakeness of holywood. this album is a definite fu.. you to holywood and all those plastic, fake stars in mainstream.
my favorite track on "Horror of Beauty" is "Bravenet" Even though it's the quietest track on their, it has some very in your face lyrics.. and is quite haunting. "Get Pretty" is also a favorite.its a perfect anthem for all the lonely, misplaced, girls out there who wont appoligize for scaring you because "normal ppl" are everything thats wrong with America.
I recommend this album if your a fan of goth and heavy metal. u wont be sry u bought it.

3 out of 5 stars Ashley, who still knows what she's talking about.......2004-08-20

This CD disappointed me. Yes they're still good, yes Tairrie still writes amazing lyrics and packs a gut wrenching vocal...BUT the great moments are fewer and farther between. It's not the "heaviness" that turned me off on this one, because I listen to other stuff harder than My Ruin, but it just seemed watered-down to me. The lyrics aren't as good and her scream seems to have diminished a little bit. There's more "I hate you, screw you" and less intelligence, which Tairrie is famous for. I like the CD but will not rave about it like I would the first two. Anyway, good tracks are "Spitfire,"Burn the Witch," and "Bravenet." I absolutely adore "Bravenet." THAT'S the Tairrie I know and love. But I also realize bands must shift and change in order to do be any good so let's just say I didn't like this change but it's still worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Certainly Worth It.......2004-06-28

This is an interesting album as I thought the track "Made To Measure" sounded very much like AC/DC it was brillant it is was refreshing to hear something different from what we've heard from Tairrie B and "My Ruin", that goes for the whole album really good ol' well ... old school. The Bass, Guiter and Drums where hard hitting and quick paced, which lifted the feel of the music when the each track started, and of course the vocals where top notch. The only songs that expressed dark emotion where "Burn The Witch" and "Bravenet". Remember folks don't snub something because its different, this is a classy album!

    5 out of 5 stars A real find.......2001-04-26

This is a terrific recording of some familar and some little-known American composers. The most substantial work in this varied collection is certainly the Argento setting of selections from the diary of Virginia Woolf. Mary Ann Hart must be just about the ideal interpretter of these powerful songs. Great vocalism, great musicianship, and a special ability to do what the music demands without short-changing the words - which is essential to the success of this cycle. The entire CD - while varied both stylistically an in terms of the quality of compositions - is consistent in the brilliance of the performances and in the appeal of these songs. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in contemporary American art songs, or who just loves great singing.

    4 out of 5 stars Tantalizing tidbits.......2000-06-14

You may not love Paul Sperry's voice, but you gotta love his wide-ranging interests and his obvious joy in performing American music. Singers exploring the contemporary American art song will note numerous composers' dedications to this quirky tenor, and listening to his recordings, you quickly understand why. His interpretations go right to the heart of the matter, and proceed right over the top only when it's rigorously demanded in the music. Singers looking for new repertoire will also appreciate the extensive liner notes, in which Mr. Sperry explains where he found the songs.

The range of composers, beyond Billings and Bolcom to Weill and Weisgall, is maddening, giving a tantalizing taste of the diverse flavors of American song in the 20th century. The songs run the gamut of emotions, too, from Ben Weber's powerful 'Mourn, Mourn' to Cowell's sarcastic 'Who Wrote This Fiendish Rite of Spring?' to the loving memory of 'George.'

I highly recommend this accessible and communicative Sampler, and would also suggest that listeners try Mr. Sperry's more tightly focussed collection, Romantic American Songs.
