Album Description
Nuclear Assault were among thrash metal's most socially aware groups, making room for serious subject matter (and occasional goofs) in their careening speed metal riffing. They also remained closer to the world of hardcore than most of their peers, and at their late-'80s peak released some of the most uncompromising thrash metal offerings of the time. One of the Big Apple's few challengers (along with Anthrax and Overkill) to the Bay Area dominance of all things thrash metal, Nuclear Assault became immediate contenders due to the cumulative sum of its parts not to mention, their extreme nature and their ability to back it up with solid musicianship. Produced by metal stalwart Alex Perialas, their first album, 1986's Game Over, was regarded as a breath of fresh air with its potent speed metal tinged with hardcore overtones. In the process, fans and critics alike instantly accepted it and the band was quickly off to the races. In early 2002 the band was approached by a mutual friend to reform for a couple of shows. Their first reunion show was a the Metal Meltdown in April and there they found out that there was a demand for the band to continue. They played the classic NYC venue CBGBs in May along with a show in Massachusetts that was recorded for a live album, released by SPV in early 2003. Currently, Nuclear Assault has just finished a successful tour of South America with the Sodom and is preparing for a European tour to support their first studio album in 10 years, Third World Genocide. The album features 13 tracks performed by core members Danny Lilker, Glenn Evans and John Connelly along with Anthony Bramante and Eric Burke. Supporting videos are planned for the songs Long Haired Asshole and Price of Freedom.

Very Enjoyable Listen.......2006-05-08
This may not be thier best ever, but it's definitely a well written album with solid riffs and catchy songs. Props to Nuclear Assault for still being able to kick ass!
"Must be something out of Kafka's dreams".......2006-02-10
I am a big fan of 1980s metal and am always interested in what bands from the metallic heyday are putting out now (so many are still around proving how incredible their music was and still is). Usually, these albums from old bands are OK but miss the magic of their glorious past. Third World Genocide is an exception. Nuclear Assault's Game Over/The Plague CD is at the top of my all-time thrash albums. This CD is now right up there with it. They have not missed a thunderous beat. Every track on here is awesome, some of them incredible! Listening to this CD is like going back to the 80s and listening to a lost release. The energy, feel, noisy yet addictive riffs: it's all here! Also, John Connelly is one of the best thrash vocalists. Although high, he doesn't have a screeching voice like singers in other thrash bands. It is much easier on the ears.
The title track is as solid a thrash opening as I have ever heard! Thundering, yet restrained, drums and very dark and heavy yet catchy hooks! "Price of Freedom" has excellent riffs between the verses. "Human Wreckage" is highlighted by heavy, pounding drums. "Living Hell" just pounds away and has an addictive chorus and a nice, slow-down bridge with pleasant guitar. "Whine and Cheese" is a fun, punk-like track with smashing cymbals and light, humorous lyrics ("I'm going to sit here and whine, I'm going to whine about how my life stinks..."). I love this song! It is the one I remember the most and find myself humming. I could listen to it over and over! Then it's is followed by the amazing "Defiled Innocence"--awesome guitar riffs, a head banging heaven! The next four tracks are straight-forward, fast and furious thrash! "Eroded Society" is Cryptic Slaughter-like (remember them? A blending of punk and thrash). Like their past albums, Nuclear Assault likes to demonstrate their sense of humor (remember their blues segment on "(You Figure It Out)"?) and they do so here with "Long-Haired A$#hole." It actually sports some cool blue grass licks. The vocals on it are darn good and the guitar solo is very impressive. The lyrics are also very cool ("Well people with short hair and business suits they caused the S & L disaster/ We'll be paying for that for the rest of our lives/ But I'm a long-haired a#$hole...") These guys are versatile musician extraordinaires! It ends with the killer closer "Glenn's Song" (another of my favorites). Although, my favorite tracks are "Third World Genocide," "Price of Freedom," "Living Hell," "Whine and Cheese," "Defiled Innocence," and "Glenn's Song," there is nothing weak here. Just killer, old school thrash! Anyone who likes 1980s thrash and is skeptical of what these bands are churning out now, do not hesitate to buy this CD. Check out the audio clips (that's what encouraged me the buy it) and you will be made a believer! The CD booklet includes lyrics and a photo of the band (Glenn Evans gives the sign that his fans are #1).
Modern Nuclear Assault sound with a lot of the old in it.......2005-09-21
I really go for songs that have lyrics that mean something, and as usual Nuclear Assault provides in spades. They run the spectrum from 911 to adultery. Good stuff compared to what many bands provide these days.
On top of that the music sounds a lot like the original Nuclear Assault music. There are some changes, but not enough to keep the long time fans from recognizing who it is. For those that say this is not thrash, then they have forgotten what thrash is.
Should Have Known.......2005-09-20
I should have known that this album would suck because thrash bands from the 80's that are still around and they make a new album it always sucks,Kreator is the only thrash band that has made a new album that's good(Enemy Of God).I love Nuclear Assault's old stuff their first four albums.
John Connelly's voice isn't as high as it use to be but that's understandable because he's older.
The riffs are not good, the music in general isn't good on this album.
This is a slower album, the thrash doesn't come until half way through the album.
The song Third World Genocide is annoying.
The best song on the album is The Hockey Song because I love hockey,it's about the 2003 playoffs.
Nuclear Assault always has their typical goof off songs on their albums, this one being Long Haired A**hole(funny)the lyrics are awesome,it's old country hick music(sounding).
Major Disappointment..........2005-09-14
First off, understand that I was a big Assault fan back in the day..."Game Over", "The Plague" and "Survive" were major richter-wreckers that most thrashers loved. Funny, heavy and faster than hell...this band was the sh*t.
"Handle With Care" was also decent, but it was obvious that perhaps a bit of stagnation had set in. And that opinion was rammed home by the aptly-titled "Out Of Order"...no new ideas, nothing fresh, boring. Nuclear Assault, boring??? Yes, it happened. I didn't bother with "Somthing Wicked"...
Now the new album...I was really looking forward to it, but I can't understand what they were trying to achieve. There is not one memorable riff on this album - everything sounds like they wrote it in 2 minutes. The leadoff title song is the absolute worst thing they, or almost any band, has written - it sounds beyond dumb. A few songs are ok, thrashing old school style, but they are grade-b at best, and don't hold a candle to their old stuff.
The worst part is the singing...John Connelly sounds like he's whining, completely out of breath. And the "joke" songs are barely that..."Long Haired A**hole" was actually written over 10 years ago from Connelly's solo record.
Again, this is from someone who used to LOVE this band, so I know what they sound like when they kick a**. This ain't it.
You want modern-day THRASH...check out the new Exodus (Shovel Headed Kill Machine) - AMAZING album!!!

The Coup (Boots, E-Roc & DJ Pam the Funkstress) pull together an amazing 2nd album. I mean amazing...it took me at least 10 listens to fully appreciate this album and I still love it more everytime I listen to it. "Genocide & Juice" is laced w/ deep socially-concious & political lyricism, so deep it'll probably take most advanced Hip-Hop heads a while to touch the bottom (myself included).
They never shy away from speaking out against capitalists, corporations, pretty much any corrupt (literally, but more so socially) figures. Yeah, I know, we've all heard Hip-Hop like that before...but not like this. The Coup just have a ironic, non-violent (loosely used) approach to their messages that will never be duplicated.
Boots, for one thing, is one of Hip-Hop's 10 most under-rated MC's, w/o a doubt. He has tremendous presense, a great voice, an on-point flow and supremely intelligent & meaningful lyrics. E-Roc is also really dope, but unfortunately Boots always out-shines him. The beats are stellar, I love every one of them. The vibe of each beat fit the theme of the track perfectly...and guess who did all the main production...my man Boots.
The Coup definetly sparked the flame w/ their debut "Kill My Landlord" which is also an under-rated masterpiece, but in my eyes, they caught fire w/ this album. Every track is good, you can listen to the whole thing straight through, w/o even thinking of skipping a track. My favorites are: "Fat Cats...," "Hip 2 tha Skeme," & "The Name Game." There's also guest spots by Spice 1 & E-40 on track #11.
Be sure to check for all The Coup's albums (there's 4 in total).
Bottom Line: This album is a slept-on masterpiece and I love it. This is Hip-Hop that needs to be listened to, not just nodded to. I strongly reccommend this to any fan of real Hip-Hop. I DON'T reccommend this to beginning & average Hip-Hop heads...this is a truly advanced album. A 5 star masterpiece, Peace.
Great Album.......2004-04-29
Back in the day my dude let me hear this album and I was blown away. The lyrics are so tight it's unbelievable. I used to smoke out and just vibe to this album, it's amazing. Rap just ain't the same anymore. What happened to all the real MC's? If you can find this album, get it, you owe it to yourself.

Takin these, hard concrete, repo man, santa rita weekend w/ 40 wata, and everyother song are dope. Check thisone out.l
Old School Tyranny Exposed.......2003-08-27
`The Coup' is among the best in highlighting social inequalities and injustice in the world. They as rappers actually have the nerve to criticize where others more well known and with more to loose fear to tread. They call out on the carpet the classic imperialists like US Presidents, Jean Paul Getty, David Rockefeller, Donald Trump and Coca Cola Execs etc. `The Coup' maintains that it's the "Fat Cats" who make this world unsafe not the thugs, pimps etc. despite what you may see on the evening news! I would compare them to Outcast though they are more West Coast in their vibes. The album also contains a seamless flow that makes you want to put it on from beginning to end. They do all this serious contemplating with on point lyricism with a twist of humour and hypnotising hip-hop beats not to mention that old school - nod ya head - funk that still sound great almost ten years later. They are clearly before their time in many areas. This album is severely underrated or ignored by most and in my opinion that is a shame.

Boy George's musical-theater debut has been unfairly maligned. Set in the glamorously decadent London nightlife of the early 1980s, the show is unquestionably hampered by a weak book. But Boy George's original score (which is credited to his actual birth name of George O'Dowd) boasts several strong pop songs and generously spread-out tour-de-force numbers among a handful of performers. The plot follows the rise to fame of Boy George (impeccably channeled by Euan Morton) and his interaction with lovers and hangers-on, friends and foes. One of the most striking characters is Australian-born performance artist Leigh Bowery, confusingly played by Boy George and Matt Lucas, who took turns during the London run and who both appear on this cast album (George sings "Everything Taboo," for instance, but Lucas gets the striking, Cabaret-like "Ich Bin Kunst"). Confused yet? Well, that's Taboofor you. But never mind the plot: There's plenty of cool, theatrical tunes on this CD, which is more than you can say about most contemporary shows. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Jolly Good!.......2006-06-16
Boy George may be to blame for the failure of his musical in the United States, though he would rather fault Rosie O'Donnell. Still, critics praised him for his lyrical skills here. There are catchy songs with various gay themes here. I enjoyed it though I've never seen the musical. I think musical fanatics will appreciate having this piece in their collection.
Bravo Boy George!.......2004-05-26
Don't hate me, but I saw the Broadway production five times including closing night. I'm still unclear why this tremendous production did not catch on, it was truly amazing. It's the first time that I've seen a Broadway show more than once. I received my Broadway CD today, as I ordered it the day after the show closed - I understand that it will be available in July, 2004, hopefully sooner in time for the Tonys. The soundtrack CD is absolutely brilliant, completely capturing the fire and energy of the live production. My favorites from the show are still my favorites here, especially Euan Morton's haunting Stranger In This World and his beautiful Pretty Lies; Liz McCartney's unbelievable take on Talk Amongst Yourselves; Guttersnipe (so funny and cute live); I See Through You; Raul Esparza's heartbreaking Petrified plus the opener Freak; Out Of Fashion and the finale, Come In From The Outside. My fingers are crossed that the Tony's are generous to this show and hope Rosie O'Donnell keeps her promise for a return for this show! Get a copy, you won't regret it, even if you are not a Boy George fan, his lyrics and beautiful melodies are his best ever - everything here is eons above so many Broadway shows that run for years. I guess I'll just keep wondering why mass audiences didn't get it, although the show did receive a standing ovation every performance.
holy crapper!.......2004-05-18
well first off, being a huge boy george fan... i was interested in his musical... i bought this cd... and i must admit most of the songs are written well and are catchy.... the most touching song is STRANGER IN THIS WORLD... euan morton's voice is soothing and the lyrics are sad and beautiful... and i recommend this album to all boy fans... although this is the london recording.... (as i patiently wait for the broadway score)... this album is good.... although george only sings on one song its still being rotated in my stereo.... get this album now....
A Very Pleasant Surprise.......2004-04-23
I did not see the Broadway Musical, but I am curious why it failed. I bought the cd just out of curiosity and absolutely love it. The songs are witty and the ballads are especially beautiful. I would highly recommend this cd.
No words to describe this.......2004-04-12
My review is going to be short and i'll get right to the point. Buy the soundtrack. The singers are beyond anything you've ever heard before. Euan Morton, be still my heart. His voice is mesmerizing. The song STRANGER IN THIS WORLD will leave you breathless. Just listen to it and you'll be transfixed, I know I was and am everytime.

Customer Reviews:
Wow! There IS still a metal underground!.......2007-01-27
I just happened to find this CD and decided to give it a try, as the reviews here on Amazon seemed to speak very highly of it. I was amazed at how Malefic (I'm guessing that's the name of the mastermind behind this CD) could create such a totally unique sound. There are elements here of many different ambient bands, but with a much darker outlook than I've seen elsewhere. Sort of imagine an angry and extremely depressed nihilist was mixing sounds in his basement and came out with something that sounds like a cross of Burzum and My Bloody Valentine. That's the basic sound here, and yes, I do think it deserves to be mentioned with both of those bands.
I could speak of the dismal vision of the album and its sound, but another reviewer already summed up what I could say perfectly: contra mundum, indeed. The bottom line is, bands like this deserve far more attention than they get. If you have any appreciation for unique musical styles, or you're one of the few open-minded black metal fans, then you should really pick up this album. It confirms what I've been hearing for a long time, that there's a definite underlying link between black metal and ambient pop/rock experiments like MBV.
good. for the status quo........2006-12-12
Decent album... if you like Scotty's brand of black metal "Muzak." To be played at high volume in every elevator and shopping mall in hell. Nocturnal Poisoning is the best work of Xasthur, also one that has not been duplicated in sound or style. ALl his other albums are like this one, in essence.
CONTRA MUNDUM.......2006-10-16
Two words can summarize Xasthur's Subliminal Genocide: Contra Mundum.
Every scream is a vitriolic spout of complete frustration, loneliness and contempt against this world. Within Malefic's damning screams is also a incredible sense of powerlessness, self-loathing and suicidal passion. While other black metal groups might express rage and hatred against the ideals of a world where fashion and falsity is more important than truth and reality, where the idiotic and mediocre are celebrated while the intelligent and skeptical are condemned as social parasites - Xasthur's expression of discontent is very personal in nature and has to do with the feeling of suffocation, isolation and desolation in enduring the tedious and cold nature of living in a diseased society.
Subliminal Genocide is a journey into the darkest excesses of the human consciousness. To me it seems Malefic awoke one day (every day) to find himself as a 'monstrous vermin' who must have been abandoned by humanity just as Samsa was. Malefic is Sisyphus fully aware that his life is being spent pushing boulders up hills only to have them roll down again. The sound of Subliminal Genocide is the Metamorphosis of man to vermin, a vermin that is hated, discarded or hunted by the hostile and indifferent culture that surrounds it. The sound you are hearing in this album is the stream of consciousness of that Vermin, of Samsa, of Sisyphus, the existential drama unfolding, the manifestation of fear, confusion and unmatched loneliness. We observe this consciousness when all hope is lost and the only solution to stem the constant feeling of desolation is voluntary death.
At the root of Malefic's sorrow is the abrahamic delusion of salvation. Instead of focusing on the health of humanity we instead bustle through life in hopes of securing a divine tomb through appeasing an absentee landlord. In the bustle our fellow man is left behind, or worse, condemned as being defective or a social adversary. In more sane times, before the judaic fear of death permeated every aspect of life and thought, human beings were more interested in reality rather than some theoretical metaphysical paradise, and as a consequence developed civic virtue and a sense of duty in serving in the community. The health of a tree was more important than the health of the leaves. A thousand years later, the health of the leaves is the only important consideration and as a consequence the tree is dying, its roots neglected. Subliminal Genocide is the manifestation of rage against this apathetic, grubby and greedy world - where gratifying an imaginary god is more important than living well and safeguarding the harmony of the greater system. Subliminal Genocide is a final and bitter reflection on this world, before the plunge into nonexistence inspired by the overwhelming strangulation of conformity to mundane and grubby creeds.
Subliminal Genocide plays like an abysmal, melodic funeral march through winter, crafted by discordant guitars and the fading heartbeat of a mechanical drum machine which at times turns into a thunderous, muffled tachycardia. Over this horrible and depressing sound come the agony filled bellows of Malefic in some of the longest and most sorrowful screams you will hear in black metal. Beautiful and memorizing interludes are immediately suffocated by bassy blast beats and fuzzy, overwhelming guitar work. A claustrophobic, terrifying, shamanistic experience, Subliminal Genocide will defiantly raise the heart rate (if not kill you) if listened to properly on high quality speakers in complete darkness.
Within this existential dream, the subliminal genocide, Malefic can exact his callous revenge, but in the real world, he is powerless and alone.
More... (I also happen to like it).......2006-10-12
Subliminal Genocide is another consistant, well crafted release from a respectable underground artist. It bears practically all of the elements Xasthur has previously established himself with and it offers more. More... plain and simple. I personally have no qualms with "more" and Genocide does not rock the boat on the quality front so I see no need to alert the Black Metal "Quality Control Police."
I would think many people into music would have legitimate reason to mildly envy guys like Xasthur, Leviathan, Sapthuran etc. They are able to take the darkest ideas and emotions from the sweet spot of their brains and translate them into physical, transportable plastic disks for others to hear. Angry guys alone in a basement somewhere making angry art and seizing the tools at hand to fine tune and deliver it... all in this awful modern era of George W. Bush. From their complex logos and artwork to the song titles, album intros and liner notes... it's all crafted with attention to detail. It's VERY cool stuff and quite respectable if you ask me. Even that Leviathan album of "demos" offers interesting moments worth investigating... takes me back to when I first discovered SST records / Black Flag as a teen. Something to get excited about... check these guys out.
heavy and dreamy and melancholy and murky and g-ddamn beautiful.......2006-10-04
What a long strange trip it's been for Malefic and Xasthur. What's even stranger it seems, is that he ended up finding a new home on the very hip indie label Hydra Head. Sure HH has released its share of dark heaviness, but black metal, especially of the ultra personal, cult and grim kind, is so concerned with staying true, and not selling out. So it's a bit of a coup that HH nabbed Xasthur. Especially after a whole mess of records on Moribund, Total Holocaust Blood Fire Death, Profound Lore and Southern Lord. There has apparently been a bit of a backlash in the true cult BM underground. But f-ck 'em. Hydra Head is a killer label and Malefic probably just got tired of being screwed left and right. Plus, oh what a joy it is to watch the true grim warriors weep at the loss, their corpsepaint smearing in long grey streaks. But it really is their loss more than any one 'cuz damn if this isn't the best Xasthur record since Nocturnal Poisoning. And that's saying a whole lot considering how much we've loved pretty much everything he's ever done.
The thing With Nocturnal Poisoning is that it was this perfect mix of sorrowful melancholia and black buzz, the sound was murky and muddy and fuzzy, but above it, were delicate melodies, dreamlike minor key filigree over a bottomless black pit. It was that strange juxtaposition that made it so special. Take that pretty element away, and you're left with just another black disc of Burzum worship. It's a little like the oil paining on the cover. You could see the texture of the canvas and the individual brushstrokes beneath the art. And with the music, it was the same thing, you could see the various elements, feel their texture, see the thick grainy backdrop upon which Malefic placed all of his dreamlike melodies and murky anguished howls.
Every record after that contained similar elements, and amazing songs, but it seemed like the recordings got more brittle, lots of high end buzz, not so much of that glorious malefic murk.
Subliminal Genocide almost sounds like it was recorded right after Nocturnal Poisoning and shelved for the last few years. It's THAT heavy and dreamy and melancholy and murky and g-ddamn beautiful.
There's not a lot of black metal that you might consider truly beautiful, but the songs on Subliminal Genocide, aren't just blasting thrashing metal, they are gorgeous lilting laments, epic and majestic and minor key. Taken out of a black metal context, they'd sound like some sort of super emotional epic post rock, but as they are, buried under thick layers of blackened buzz and wrapped in huge swaths of fuzzy sonic fog, they become even darker and more desolate, lonely and mournful. Almost none of the record is faster than a loping midtempo, about half the tracks are slow motion dirges, downright doom, with the double kick coming in more as a thick black low end cloud than any sort of actual blast, and a handful of tracks are nothing but swirling whorls of sad black ambience.
And because of the fuzzy indistinct production, and the thick murky halo around every track, lots of Subliminal Genocide sounds like some bastardized black metal version of M83, or Tim Hecker, or a little like Jeck and Marclay spinning old scratched up Burzum lps slowed waaaaaay down.
This record is simultaneously so dark and depressed and utterly evil sounding, but also fuzzy and psychedelic and totally blissed out, it's sort of hard to imagine, especially listening to this right now, that there could ever possibly be a better combination.

INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!! CRUSHING TECHNICAL DEATH/GRIND.......2005-02-05
This band just keeps outdoing themselves. Human's Pain, their previous album for me, set a new standard of technicality, brutality, speed and creative songwriting. Genocide is an excellent follow up album and contains the same supreme musicianship found on Yattering's first 2 albums. The drummer of this band sounds like Neil Peart on crack! The guitarwork is atonal, melodic, dissonant, and extremely brutal all at the same time. There is so much going on in the songs that I would not reccomend listening to it all at once. Listen to this band's music in small lethal doses so you can absord the complete brilliance of their music and not miss anything. Each time I listen to this band's music, I hear something I didnt' hear before. I wont even go into describing each song because they ALL KICK MAJOR A. If you like technical Deathmetal this album is an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE. BUY THIS OR DIE A LOOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Prep that mohawk.......2002-06-26
Genocide SS play the kind of punk that recalls the early 80s legends such as Discharge, GBH, Misfits, Exploited, etc. While some of those bands took themselves more seriously than others, Genocide SS seems to be about bashing out louder, faster punk rock that never takes itself too seriously. For those concerned about this being a neo-Nazi/white-power type band, the fascist imagery does not extend beyond the band's name and album title. An anti-swastika sticker on the back of the CD case affirms this, as does the point that it's on Relapse records - which was run by a couple of Jewish guys last time I checked. This CD is great, my only minor gripe is that a few of the riffs are completely aped from their 80s counterparts. For example, the first few seconds of "Crazy Motorcycle" tricked me into thinking they were about to cover GBH's "No Survivors" (at least until the vocals kicked in).

Just that close to being great..........2004-11-08
I first heard Jersey's Saturday Night on the Warped Tour Comp (it was sad how I couldn't go, but that's life...)and loved it. After reading some good reviews of the CD I went for it, and it wasn't as good as I expected. For one thing, the one liner choruses can really get on your nerves sometimes, and a few of the lyrics weren't as good as I thought they would be.
On the good sight, the aggression and melody in the songs are really nice and makes me happy. None of the songwriting made me go wow and stop on the spot, but it was still a good Cd, just not great. Favorite tracks included the intrude and saturday night, I thought the combo was brilliant, lessons, and dirty bones and coffins.

The debut from Universal Records' punkers Jersey is a promising album. The band is actually from the west coast, even though their name(and their sound)may suggest otherwise. That sound i mentioned, sounds similar to the punk Operation Ivy taught many bands to play. Though this is nothing we haven't heard before, these guys should probably gain some new fans with this release.
Overall rating: Three stars
Awesome cd.......2004-05-31
this is an amazing cd i bought it at one of jerseys concerts when they played with alexisonfire and at the mercy of inspiration ive personally met the guys from the band and i have a signed cd. saturday night is an amazing song, jersey deserves more fame then they already have.
awesome ceedee
Best Canadian band since Gob.......2004-05-27
I first heard Jersey a year and a bit ago on Much's "The Punk Show" I downloaded the first single off the CD, Generation Genocide, and was greatly impressed. After seeing them live, I bought their CD, and it has since became one of my favorites. These guys are an awesome punk band, and not one song on the CD dissapoints, a must have for any punk fan!
Finally !!.......2004-05-26
Finally, a punk bank that perfectly balances melody and aggression. This is the answer for anyone who is sick of TV's version of punk rock but hasn't lost faith yet. I guess it's sort of a holy grail, messiah, savior kinda vibe.

Good sounding, economical release that is poorly packaged........2005-09-25
This is a combined reissue of Judas Priest's first two albums, Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings Of Destiny. If you already have those two albums, you don't need this one.
The music on here is very good. Do not believe other reviewers who claim that the sound quality on this release is bad. It is as good as it gets.
The real issue is the packaging. None of the artwork is included from the original albums, which is good in case of Rocka Rolla, but bad in the case of Sad Wings Of Destiny. Furthermore, the photographs included in the booklet and on the back cover are from the late 80s, even though the music is from 1974-1976. There is, also, a brief biography in the booklet, the accuracy of which has been called into question.
There are many repackages of this material on the market and none of the money actually goes to the band, so it really doesn't matter which version you get. If you want the all of the music from this era in an inexpensive package and really don't care about the artwork, then this is the one to get. Otherwise, buy the original albums separately.
Don't buy it--You are getting ripped off!!!!.......2004-12-03
This is an attemp by Gull records to cash in on the Judas Priest name. This album and Hero, Hero are unauthorized, substandard reissues of the first two Judas Priest albums Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings Of Destiny. The sound Quality sucks and there is no new material on these that you won't get on the actual albums, which are still available through Cdnow/Amazon.
Support Judas Priest, the best heavy metal band of all time, and don't waste your money on this crap. Buy the real thing
Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings Of Destiny.
Judas Priest.......2004-05-25
I can't believe the the low rating on this CD? 1976's Sad Wings Of Destiny is JP's greatest work! You will not find a better tune than Victim Of Changes. A 5+ Rating!
Priest's first two albums - reissued at last!.......2004-02-05
Genocide (1974 and 1976.) A compilation containing Judas Priest's first two albums, Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings Of Destiny.
Judas Priest has been one of the world's finest heavy metal bands for - believe it or not - three decades. Unfortunately, the band's often forgotten debut, Rocka Rolla, has long since been out of print. Likewise, the band's highly sought-after sophomore album. Sad Wings Of Destiny, has also been out of print. At long last, these albums have been reissued - in one handy package! Read on for my review of these two classic albums.
THIS TEXT REFERS TO ROCKA ROLLA (1974), THE BAND'S FIRST ALBUM.
The opener, One For The Road, sounds like a southern rocker like you'd hear from a number of American bands in the seventies, though this one has a "harder edge" to it. The title track is a classic hard rocker that sounds like a cross between ACDC and Ted Nugent. It's an excellent song that shouldn't be overlooked. Winter is part one of four in the medley. This one's hard, slow, and gloomy. The track has been compared to Black Sabbath several times - and with good reason. Overall a good track. Deep Freeze is part two of four in the medley. This is easily the weakest track on the album just because it's so weird! You've got eerie noises with a guitar riff every now and again... Too bad this one got sandwiched in the middle of the otherwise good medley. Winter Retreat is part three of four in the medley. A much slower and, for the most part, softer track than anything previously heard on the album. This one's an underrated gem. Cheater finishes off the medley. THIS IS MY FAVORITE TRACK ON THIS ALBUM. Here the band uses a bluesy hard rock/metal style very similar to the one Black Sabbath used on their first album. Never Satisfied is mid-paced melodic hard rock that doesn't seem like the kind of track you'd expect to hear from Judas Priest. It's still a good song, though! Don't skip it! The next song may be called Run Of The Mill, but it's anything but! In this one, the band uses an ultra slow and melodic style, throwing in an awesome guitar pattern at what I guess you'd call the "chorus". Another underrated gem. Dying To Meet You isn't bad by any means, but it sounds almost nothing like the Judas Priest the average person knows and loves (apart from Halford's vocals). Again, you could call this one "southern hard rock." Yet another underrated gem (This album's got a lot of 'em!). Caviar And Meths, the closer, is a melodic instrumental only lasting two minutes. Not a bad song, but definitely a wasted opportinuty. I, like so many other fans, would have preferred a "full-blown" instrumental.
FINAL RATING FOR THIS ALBUM IS 3.5 STARS.
THIS TEXT REFERS TO SAD WINGS OF DESTINY (1976), THE BAND'S SECOND ALBUM.
Victim of Changes, the opener, is a slow rocker, but it's still hard and heavy. I'm almost positive Metallica stole one of the riffs from this song and use it in their Seek And Destroy. The Ripper, track number two, is my favorite on the album - and arguably of Priest's entire career. Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing never played guitar riffs better than they did in this song (though they DID tie it a few times.) An interesting note - the title of this song is where Rob Halford's vocal replacement Tim "Ripper" Owens got his alias! Dreamer Deceiver is a slow and melodic rocker which uses acoustic guitars. It's a perfect example of "Judas Priest is a band that doesn't always have to play heavy music to be good." Deceiver gives us straight-up classic NWOBHM-based metal. The number of British metal bands who ripped off this song is phenomenal. But hey, if you're gonna rip a band off, you may as well rip off the best!Prelude is one's basically piano playing and nothing more. This album is mostly good, but it has a few blunders, this one included. As the title implies, it's a "prelude" to the next track, a Judas Priest masterpiece.Tyrant's a fast and furious rocker, the way heavy metal was meant to be experienced. The band is in its prime here - no questions asked. This is my second favorite track on the album (it's second only to The Ripper.) Genocide is a hard rocker that has a bit of an American southern rock touch to it, making it somewhat similar to the tracks featured on the band's previous album. As for Epitaph, I'm not even sure why this track got put on the album. It's basically just Prelude all over again, but with some wimpy vocals. But Island of Domination, the closer, is another straight-up NWOBHM based rocker that many bands have ripped off. I honestly don't think the boys could have closed the album better.
FINAL RATING FOR THIS ALBUM IS 4.25 STARS.
Unfortunately, this package has three problems that fans may overlook - One, the original cover art is not included here. Instead, an entirely new photograph is featured on the cover. Why couldn't they just do a black background with both of the album covers shrunken down and put on it? Second of all is the flaw that many other reviewers mention - the sound quality. These albums didn't get the remastering treatment everything from Sin After Sin to Painkiller did, because CBS Records doesn't own the rights to them. The third flaw is that these two albums would have fit on ONE disc (if they had omitted the bonus track.), so scattering them on TWO discs was stupid. Another thing to remember is that this is all previously released material, so if you already own these albums in some shape or form, buying this is pointless.
Overall, these are two very good and highly underrated albums. And the fact that you can now get both of these rare little gems in a single package means you have no excuse not to purchase them if you're a Judas Priest fan. If you don't own either of these albums yet, and you're a Priest fan, what are you waiting for?
a taste of things to come.......2002-02-13
I'm a huge Judas Priest fan. I have every original CD from this one through Painkiller (their last with Halford).
The album is a double CD featuring Judas Priest's first two LPs - "Rocka Rolla" (tracks 1-10) and "Sad Wings of Destiny" (tracks 12-20). "Diamonds & Rust" (track 11) is a bonus track from their third album, "Sin After Sin" and is marginally different but not worth noting. It is a good song though.
Together the album is worth buying, individually the two albums might not be. "Rocka Rolla" has some good stuff that hints at JP's later greatness ("Cheater", title track, "Never Satisfied", "One for the Road") but the rest is very forgettable junk. By itself, this album would be probably 2 stars.
As for "Sad Wings of Destiny", it was better (some fans still regard it as Priest's best album though I disagree) and while the stand-alone version has very nice cover art its better bought here to make the first album worthwhile. "Ripper" is a great take on Jack The Ripper. "Genocide", "Tyrant", and "Island of Domination" are also very good. "Victim of Changes" is okay. The rest is just filler. By itself, this album would probably be 3 1/2 stars.

the U.N is SLOW.......2005-06-13
It is a tragedy that Western countries cannot act when it is most necessary and vital.
The world must react to immobility! I know i'm only talking and not acting but if everybody realized what is going in Sudan (among other places) the world probably wouldn't be in this sad situation.
IT'S PRETTY SAD IF YOU'RE TRYING TO RESELL THIS CD WITH ZERO FUNDING GOING TOWARDS THE GENOCIDE RELIEF FUNDS. PEOPLE, IF YOU WANT THIS CD TAKE A LOOK AT THIS AND BUY FROM THIS SITE...I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THE MONEY WILL BE SENT TO HELP WHERE IT IS MOST NEEDED. According to the UN, the conflict in Sudan has created the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with more than one million people driven from their homes and up to 50,000 people killed by government supported militias (CNN 8/31/04). The systematic rape of women and the murder of children has been widely reported.
"We're trying to address two things with this CD," says Waxploitation CEO Jeff Antebi, the album's executive producer. "The first is to get the United Nations to declare the ongoing atrocities a genocide, so that real action can take effect to stop what is obviously an `ethnic cleansing' taking place, in violation of the 1948 Geneva Convention. The second is to raise money for the dire relief situation effecting over 1 million innocent civilians who might die from starvation and disease if aid does not reach them right now."
In 1994 in Rwanda an estimated 800,000 people were killed in just 100 days, in one of the worst genocides of the last century. One of the primary reasons cited for why this happened was a lack of outside intervention by the United Nations. Even with UN troops on the ground in Rwanda, they were unable to intervene because it was not legally declared a Genocide until too late.
Waxploitation will donate all of the profits from the Genocide in Sudan CD to the United Nations Refuge Agency and UNICEF (www.unhcr.ch and www.UNICEF.org ), build awareness for solutions that anyone can easily assist with, including signing the petition at (www.darfurgenocide.org/action.htm), and guide people to protests and events in their area.
The CD will be available at most major retailers as well as at www.waxploitation.com/genocide.

MAXIMUM CHAOS!!!!.......2002-06-15
Circle Of Dead Children construct a sonic tornado that is insanely complex and brutal. There is no set song structure present throughout The Genocide Machine. "Songs" if you can call each of the bursts of blistering sound a song , are hyper-active explosions of sound that alternate from punishing speed to bone - crunching breakdowns. The vocals on The Genocide Machine are the lowest most guttural vocals i have ever heard in the Grindcore genre ; scraping the gray matter off your brain and out of your ears. There are no set verses and choruses , the walls of sound are so huge and powerful they will knock you to the ground in a bloody , ball of flesh. The theme of The Genocide Machine deals with the destruction of nature and the ecosystem. So if you are brave enough ; step up to the plate and purchase The Genocide Machine now!
Grindcore at its finest.......2002-05-28
THE GENOCIDE MACHINE is Circle Of Dead Children's third album. It
is absolutely surreal. It's one of those albums that elevates grindcore to musical art. Together, the band is tight and every song will make your jaw drop at the beauty of it all. I don't
like to use the word "brutal" because I find grindcore beautiful-but this album is BRUTAL. Joe Horvath is an amazing vocalist and
the instrumentalists behind him are brilliant.
Circle Grind.......2002-04-28
Circle of Dead Children are a great METAL band... they're not fake like most of the scene today! The singer's sister told me about them, and I've loved their music since!
HEAVY!!!!!.......2001-07-20
This album is so damn heavy it hurts. In-your-face, intelligent metal that will make you think, damnit. The cd is a bit short but who cares when you have something this great.
