4 out of 5 stars Blood Guts and Glory.......2004-09-15

Band:Cryonic Temple
Album:Blood Guts & Glory
Record Company:LIMB Music
Writer: Ogg the Barbarian
Things are, generally, exactly what they appear to be. You heard it here. More importantly, you heard it from me, brethren, and as one beloved of Odin and all the really super cool gods, no other mortal opinion is relevant-- don't you feel lucky to have Ogg to think for you? Cryonic Temple is classic Euro-Power/prog-i.e.: Testosterone fueled battle hymns and a he-man woman haters club in-your-face mentality that belongs to no other genre of music. Nothing more. Nothing less. One look at the Frazetta-style cover painting tells you exactly what's on the inside-- it is completely, unabashedly WITHOUT PRETENSE.

OK-- according to The Dictionary of Everything You Ever Needed to Know, classic Euro-Power/prog=Helloween clone. This is not necessarily true. Although I'm agitated by a dunning lack of original thought or innovative idea in this style of music from time to time, this is not the case here. "Mercenaries of Metal", the first track, for example-- over six minutes long, and complete with a reverb-heavy chaingang chorus. Sure, sure-- regurgitated Manowar. I should be quaffing grog, pulling my hair, tossing it across the hearth and on to the next disc, but I'm not-- this band is not without its merits. Cryonic Temple, a five piece, know little about dynamics, apparently-- their pace starts, lives and ends in the breakneck zone. For all that speed, there is a stamina and solidity to the work. This has the feel of a journeyman band with great commitment to their craft, and a strong sense of traditional metal. In power metal, there is a razor thin line between the sublime and the silly-- when a band can draw comparisons to Manowar, that band flirts with the silly side of that spectrum-- but here is a band that has not crossed that line . Not yet.

General overview: nice flirtation with the classical modes in the solo work and good restraint shown in the keyboard arrangement. Admittedly the keyboards are of the ambient noise variety, but not obnoxiously so. The guitars attack with straight on conviction, and overall, the guitar parts are well honed (but right on the cusp of sounding over-produced). Lyrically-- well, I'll give you the titles of six of the ten tracks on "Blood, Guts & Glory" and let you guess for yourself: "Mercenaries of Metal"; "Swords and Diamonds"; "Thunder and Lightning"; "The Story of the Sword"; "Long Live the Warriors"; and "Triumph of Steel". Heard enough? The vocals are tight, and soar as power vox should, but there is enough of a Dickinsonian (I just invented a word!) overtone to make it listenable, which is important. Just cuz it's nothing new, doesn't mean it's nothing good. Cryonic Temple has the skills to wave d#@ks with any of the heavyweights in this genre, and if pure power/prog is your cup 'o mead, then get this disc. Ogg the Brabarian gives "Blood, Guts & Glory" three and a half bronze shields out of five.

5 out of 5 stars an awesome blend of old school true metal with the power and progression of newer styles of power metal.......2006-11-03

this my fellow metallians is truly an awesome power metal album. cryonic temple blend together old school with more modern power metal with utter perfection. the music here is alot like a mixture of master of the rings 2 and time of the oath era helloween blended with sounds of such acts as grim reaper, cirith ungol, attacker, or even old virgin steele. all of these styles blended together make for one hell of a power metal sound.
the song writing and story concepts truly walk the path of manowar. titles like triumph of steel and mercenaries of metal, that sounds like manowar type songs to me. this album starts out with a wonderful song called mercenaries of metal, i love this song because it has the feel of a helloween song that i love. if you remember on master of the rings 2 the songs where the rain grows and soul survivor had this irresistable guitar mellody that was layered over a nice riff. the sound of those 2 helloween songs remind me alot of the first song on this album. it has this beautiful catchy lead guitar mellody layered over top of the main riff that truly makes this song stand out. another great thing about this cd is that every song walks its own path, every song does not sound the same as the others. each song has its own unique sounds. my favorite song has got to be #7 long live the warriors because of the crunchy old school style main power riff that makes you feel like smashing someones head through a wall. this song rocks and adds to the diversity of time changes on this album. from anthems to epics to ballads, this album has something great in store for all lovers of power metal. also check out in thy power, another awesome release from these metal mongers. i am truly thankfull for all of these bands around today who are keeping true metal alive, there are so many amazing acts out today like primal fear, silent force, wolf, majesty, jag panzer, grave digger, gamma ray, rob rock.ian parry, edguy, sonata arctica, rhapsody, godiva, freedom call, eidolon, paragon, king diamond, skylark, pink cream 69, pretty maids, axel rudi pell, kamelot, nocturnal rites, tad morose, lefay, sinner.i could go on and on untill my hand breaks from typing. any way keep on keeping the spirit of metal alive and do like me and just say to hell with mtv. your friend in metal, brandon whitson

3 out of 5 stars A Good TRUE METAL Album.......2005-01-19

Probably 3.5 stars. I think this is a fun release. True metal played well with candy and a vocalist that sounds similar to Steve Grimmett of the classic metal band Grim Reaper. Some songs are better than others with a few standout tracks which is nice. This is big chorus true metal of the tra,la,la Hammerfall sort with typical warrior, metal forever type lyrics. Overall you get what you pay for here. Well worth the money but certainly not groundbreaking stuff. I personally have the version with the bonus track but it is nothing special so if there is a price difference puchase the regular version with no fear of missing anything special.
