Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Really Bad Sound Quality.......2006-07-05

I bought this expensive CD for the same reason you are looking at it, to get Raise a Little Hell on CD. Let me tell you straight up that this CD sounds really, really bad. I read the previous review regarding the sound quality and asked myself, "How bad can it really be?" Its so bad, I threw it away. Now that's bad. I don't know if any of the other CDs are any better, but don't buy this one, you will be throwing 20 bills out the window.

2 out of 5 stars Classic Canuck pop rockers deserve better than this.......2006-02-11

Trooper was one of Canada's best 1970s pop rock bands. Influenced by Guess Who/BTO founder Randy Bachman (he produced the Vancouver quintet's first four albums), Trooper had a dozen top 20 hits north of the border between 1975 and '80. The band is still together, with lead vocalist Ra McGuire and guitarist Brian Smith touring around the country.

The question is, why has MCA (the label that released 7 of Trooper's 9 studio albums) not given the band its due with a decent compilation? Hot Shots was released right after the fourth album, so it's missing a huge part of the the group's history. Not only that, Hot Shots contains only 12 songs and 45 minutes -- far less than an average CD can hold. Finally, this cd has *terrible* sound quality, as if it was mastered from a beat-up 8-track tape.

Shame on MCA for spitting on Trooper's catalogue! Then again, I shouldn't be surprised. The label still hasn't released all the studio albums on CD.

5 out of 5 stars awesome classic album.......2003-04-16

This album brings back fond memories of my high school days. Who could forget The Boys in the bright white sports car? All of the girls wanted a boy in a white car when that album came out. They were H.O.T.

5 out of 5 stars good cd.......2002-10-31

great trooper cd i know the lead singers son connor he is a cool guy and i met the lead singer for trooper they live in vancouver bc

4 out of 5 stars Almost an ideal Trooper compilation.......2002-06-24

This would be the perfect Trooper compilation, except for one glaring omission: "3 Dressed Up as a 9" was one of Trooper's best tunes, yet it was, for inexplicable reasons, not included. But all the rest are here: "The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car," "General Hand Grenade," and "Raise a Little Hell" being the most outstanding cuts. "Raise a Little Hell" ranks below Alice Cooper's "School's Out" but rivals Prism's "Young and Restless" and Twisted Sister's "We're Not gonna Take Take It" as a teen rock anthem.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING: DO NOT BUY UNTIL U HEAR THE PREVIEW..........2006-10-22

I've heard quit a few tributes to IM, but this one really blows. The music just has no dynamics, and sometimes even sounds out of tune. If u want to waste some money on classic instruments performing IM songs i recommend that you buy THe Piano Tribute, but do not even bother with this one. It is a rather experimental attempt to play already perfected music and doesn't even give you that satisfaction that you might have had if you are a Metallica fan and have listened to Apocalyptica's tribute to them.

1 out of 5 stars The CD IRON MAIDENS SHOULD BE "WITHOUT".......2006-01-27

Being an Iron Maiden fan i thought this would be a good one. But Stupid me i didn't read the warnings from other buyers. This is the worst cd ever. well if you pretend its not iron maiden songs being destroyed, i guess it may be acceptable. A waste of money. i will probably toss it out with the rest of the trash. This is my opinion. DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen to the warnings of others PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Comparatively Disappointing.......2004-12-19

I am a big fan of almost all "String Quartet Tribute to -" 's, but this one is an exception. The arrangements are rather poor and on some tracks, the instruments are slightly out of tune - which is really distracting. They add a set of bongos / congos into the mix, and it feels really foreign and out of place. As much as I love this genre and Iron Maiden, this tribute really does justice to neither.

3 out of 5 stars LOL.......2004-10-08

When i Heard the sample tracks it just made me feel like turning on some REAL Maiden.

One of the many Nashville-based singer-songwriters whose respected stature among critics and fellow artists stands in stark contrast to his rather meager commercial acclaim, Greg Trooper has quietly built a catalog of superbly crafted albums. On his second release for the Sugar Hill label (his eighth overall), Trooper teams up with legendary songwriter/producer Dan Penn for a collaboration so natural, it's a wonder it hadn't happened before.

Trooper's music already combines strains of R&B, country, and folk, which Penn acknowledges by infusing a subtle yet palpable tenderness into these songs. Sung in a honeyed, gritty voice that combines the tough, yet resigned style of Guy Clark and longtime friend Buddy Miller with the vulnerability of Paul Simon, Trooper's songs straddle the dusty roads between Austin soul and Nashville twang--both of which cities he has called home. The lyrically provocative "When I Think of You My Friends" is one example of a typical Trooper setup where the protagonists are "out of luck, out of work, never out of dreams." Yet he won't settle for weepy sentimentality in either his words or stirring melodies. These twelve tracks flaunt the soul in the singer's emotionally rousing tunes and show him as one of the most talented contemporary acts on the roots scene. Credit also goes to Penn, whose warm, sympathetic production allows Trooper the room he needs to shine. --Hal Horowitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-31

I bought this album largely on the basis of the excellent reviews on Amazon.com, and I wholly endorse the reviewers' universally positive views - this is a marvellous album, heartfelt, lyrical, gutsy, great melodies, with a lot to say. It beautifully captures the point at which folk and country come together. I can't imagine anyone not loving this. Buy it....

Others have singled out various tracks for praise, but my favourites here are "No Higher Ground" (a movingly heartfelt take on hurricanes) and "I Love It When She Lies". The only mystery to me is, why is Greg Trooper not better known?

5 out of 5 stars You won't be disappointed.......2006-08-10

I saw Greg live in Ann Arbor a few days ago, opening for
the great Slaid Cleaves. He played solo, and put on a great
show. I had never heard of him before, but now I will look
at his other releases. He's an extraordinary songwriter.
If you liked John Prine is his prime, you will love
Greg Trooper.

5 out of 5 stars Trooper Arrives.......2006-02-17

Make It Trough This World is winning all the right awards in Nashville these days for all the right reasons. Trooper has been quietly around awhile and manages to sew all the threads of those experiences into a most powerful set of lyrical stories.. While his terrific live album, Between a House and a Hard Place, spotlights his brilliant lyric writing, this collection brings the best of all together with legendary producer Dan Penn. Penn uses just enough music to let the driving rhythms highlight the lyrical brilliance. While Trooper definitely has his own thing going here, if you appreciate John Prine, Guy Clark and Todd Snider you will love every single song on this one. And you'll have a new favorite song each listen through. Trooper has arrived!

5 out of 5 stars Another Gem from Trooper.......2006-01-16

This is the fourth Greg Trooper CD I've purchased. Each of them is excellent, but "Make It Through This World" is the best yet. If you like thoughtful lyrics that you can understand coupled with superb country/blues/rock music, Trooper, and this album in particular, are for you. Highlights include "Dream Away These Blues," "Green Eyed Girl," and "Lonesome for You Now," all of which are so catchy and heartfelt (without being corny) that you'll be singing them to yourself non-stop.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I bought it twice.......2005-08-29

This has been my favorite album of the year. Great, natural, country-soul. I originally purchased the album digitally, and I just bought it again from Amazon in order to get the lyrics.

Both the music and lyrics are brilliantly crafted.

I have heard of Trooper a couple years ago but I didn't really know too much about them and I'm so glad that I discovered this album at a record store and I decided to give these guys a try and I'm now glad that I did, Trooper sure has a wide diversity of music and I take that as a good thing, at times they sound like Foreigner, Rare Earth, Orleans, Eagles and the (early) Doobie Brothers, the best songs are No Fun Being Alone, Round Round We Go, Raise a Little Hell and One Good Reason, the rest of the album is solid and there isn't a bad song on here and that is something I don't say too often, I just wish that Trooper would've been as big in the states as they were in Canada and I think that all 70's classic rock fans should check out this album.

I own 5 Trooper albums and this is the best by far. Hot Shots is great, but this album just SHINES!!!!! Ra's vocals are so sharp, the band is so tight, not a bad song on the whole album. Wish they would tour here in Denver!!! Love to get a new album out by them. LONG LIVE TROOPER!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best Trooper album ever !!.......2001-05-11

Trooper's 1978 album was there best album ever! With the hit's "Raise a little hell", "Round round we go", "Moment that it takes" & "Say goodnight" (not to mention "The Gambler", "Live from the moon",& "Drive me crazy"), Ra and Brian were at there peak songwriting. Without a doubt one of my Top 10 albums of all time (#4)and a soundtrack to my youth. ...

5 out of 5 stars A classic gem that rock fans of the 70's & 80's would love.......1999-02-25

this is one album from the 70's and 80's period that most folks have never heard of, but i still consider it a classic, "Raise a Little Hell" is probably the only song that some people would recognize, but it is not even the best song on the album. a must for fans of guitar oriented clear lyric type music of this wonderful era...

5 out of 5 stars Not "one" bad song on the entire album........1999-02-21

I bought the vinyl in Canada roughly 19 years ago. Now it's time to purchase the CD...what a great collection of tracks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Musicians Unite To Benefit Free Speech.......2007-02-24

This unique and now rare CD captures a two-night performance at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville to benefit the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University. The CD was originally offered to the public for free (with only a nominal mailing charge), with the hope that the recipient would recognize the importance of the cause and make an additional monetary donation to the Center, which battles censorship and other infringements on First Amendment rights.

The concept behind the choice of songs was simple; every song on this disc was banned or surpressed in some manner at the time it was originally released. They dealt with a variety of subjects: sex, integration, and the Vietnam-era anti-war movement among them. Some of the tunes are very familiar, such as Good Rockin' Tonight (best known through Elvis Presley's recording), Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash & Young) Blowin' In the Wind (Bob Dylan) and In the Ghetto (also Elvis), while others were more obscure, then and now. In some cases, it seems almost laughable that the song prompted such an uproar. But almost all of them had an important message about society at the time they first recorded.

The list of performers is diverse and impressive. Steve Earle performs one of his own recent compositions, and Rodney Crowell, Radney Foster, Bill Lloyd (who also serves as musical director), Dan Baird, Kim Richey, Kevin Welch, and Greg Trooper also appear. The best performance is turned in by Tommy Womack, whose version of Eve of Destruction has an honesty, passion and energy that Barry McGuire's hit version (1965) sorely lacked. Another highlight is a straightfaced trio rendition of Where Have All the Flowers Gone, a song I never again expected to enjoy, having lived through too many saccharine versions during the Sixties folk boom. Sadly, its powerful anti-war message is relevant again in our times.

The purpose for these performances is found in the songs themselves; there are no heavy-handed speeches or politicizing. But these sensitive and intelligent renditions serve to remind us how precious is the right of free speech, and that artistic expression should not be crushed by political or social agendas.

Even if you remain unpersuaded by the politics, this recording is a lot of fun, with a lot of terrific songs, and it stands up to repeated listening. Good luck finding this CD, but if you do, grab it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Obscure Gem refills Empty Music Glass.......2007-01-15

This is one of my finds at NYC this past Holiday. I think it was at a St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store on 79th & Broadway... Great little place; big on books and knick-knacks and a surprisingly beefy little selection of CD's.
The reason this particular CD stands out from the others is 2-fold. 1st, {amendment}.. I can't get this to show-up on All Music, which is where I go for a little background sometimes.. Sometimes alot. and 2nd, There are substantial cover-materials here to warrant a cop.
Dan Baird of the Legendary Georgia Satellite turns in a kill-me-with-it version of "Stret Fighting Man".. and Rodney Crowell, the first Mr. RoseAnne Cash, trips into Merle-Town with that anti-hippie chestnut "Okie from Muskogee".
You also get "Society's Child" and "Ohio" and "In the Ghetto"- - -

Bill Lloyd seems to be the thread. It's like great evening out with a group of musicians doing what they do best.
18 in all.

Greg Trooper will never be a big star; hell, he won't even be a small star. Yet, as an everyman roots-rocker, Trooper consistently delivers solid, honest songwriting (good enough to have been covered by Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle, and Billy Bragg among others) in his husky but unassuming vocal style. Straight Down Rain, the Nashvillian's fifth studio record, is buttressed by the thick-and-meaty production courtesy of Phil Madeira, who successfully pushes the sonic envelope on a number of occasions. Highlights include the fiddle-and-steel honky-tonker "Real Like That" (featuring Julie Miller's harmonies); the humorous, swampy "Doghouse" (which adds trombone, tuba, and drum loops to the mix); and the pretty, Celtic-tinged "I'm Dreaming" (which adds Maura O'Connell's vocals). With taste and charisma, Trooper manages to put forth another endearing collection that achieves its goals, modest as they may be. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Straight down rain.......2004-01-13

Yet another amazing album from Greg Trooper. This guy is a genius singer songwriter. My faves on the album are 'real like that' with Julie Miller on harmony vocal; 'Once and for all' a real cool song that has spent much time on repeat in my stereo!! 'Lovin' never came that easy' and 'over the moon'. All in all a great album, a well worth investment. Go on, add it to your basket....you know you want to!!

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical Nashville artist.......2001-09-24

Greg Trooper breaks the stereotypes of Nashville songwriters. In "You Love Your Broken Heart" he sings of a lover that won't allow themself to love back. "I'd like to think the time has come/ for ancient wounds to heal/ to shake off all the ghosts that still remain/. . . /but you love your broken heart too much to change." As in his prior recordings the songs often feel confessional, showing emotional ambiguity about the situation the song's protagonist finds himself in.

Produced by Phil Madeira this release has a smoother sound than Greg's previous albums, not good or bad, just different. "Doghouse" shows an edgier feel than anything he's done in the past. With the exception of "Trampoline", which was previously released on co-writer Bill Lloyd's 1994 "Set to Pop" release the compositions on this collection are newer songs showing Trooper's continued growth as a songwriter.

Greg's songs always sound best when he performs them, but we can expect other artists to release cover versions as has happened in the past. His songs have thus far been covered by such country and folk artists as Steve Earle, Vince Gill, and Lucy Kaplansky. One potential cover is "Sometimes it Takes a Hurricane", a song with a catchy chorus and a timely message, much like the title track from his "Everywhere" CD.

Anyone who enjoys great intelligent songwriting will appreciate this and all of Greg Trooper's CDs. He's also a great live performer, don't miss the chance to see him in your town.

Call it what you want, folk country americana, it's all here. there is even a waltz, a damn fine one too. Purchased this CD from Trooper at a show, and he is even more open live than on disc. Buy this and amaze your friends, I have and do>

4 out of 5 stars Songs from the Heart.......2001-04-24

Mr. Trooper, once again, has assembled a collection of charming, heartfelt songs. Straight Down Rain tends to have more of a studio, refined, plugged-in sound than the acoustic Popular Demons. From the whimsical Trampoline to his eternal optimism in anticipation of a second chance at love (Nothin But You), Greg Trooper weaves some interesting stories that make me roll down the windows in my minivan on a sunny day and sing out loud!

4 out of 5 stars To the ignorant.......2007-01-12

the person who wrote the review saying that they just released this album to make money is obviously the coolest person alive. please write the band a letter and mayne they will apoligize for making money. good lord

1 out of 5 stars More of the same.......2006-11-21

Once again, Iron Maiden offers over and over again the same songs they always play. This is noting new. This is nothing interesting. That band just shows no respect for the fans because they offer the same stuff in order to make money. The same tracks live for the 1000000000000 time. If you are a fan, show some respect for yourself and do not buy this. Make the band know they have more songs to offer.

5 out of 5 stars A nice treat for the fans.......2005-12-29

This single (Along with the 2005 Number Of The Beast single) is a very nice treat for the fans of the band. The CD, 7" vinyl and 12" picture disc comprise of various tracks from the European Early Days Tour, along with the original recording of The Trooper from Piece Of Mind, and a live version from the album Death On The Road. A very cool (and inexpensive) way to say thanks to the fans.
