5 out of 5 stars Ties Piece of Mind.......2007-07-25

Different sounding than Piece of Mind, newer sound, faster guitar, IMO, an equal, excellent cd. Maybe just a little better.

4 out of 5 stars "Heroic" rock done right.......2007-07-04

I'm not going to start this by saying fanboy stuff like "Best metal album ever!" because I haven't heard every single metal album ever released. But in about a quarter century of being a fan of heavy rock then I can wholeheartedly say that Powerlsave is a true classic of "heroic" metal and probably Iron Maiden's finest moment.

It's not really down to earth, gritty stuff like Motorhead, and I'm not even sure that I'd class it as "rock and roll" (which is an althogether more hormonal beast). But for rousing, headshaking, play-the-air-guitar rock it's excellent. Despite the often regrettable Neanderthal like public perception of 1980s heavy metal, this is really pretty musically and technically accomplished stuff, with lots of clever chord changes and musical surprises. Thankfully we also have one of the best "duelling guitarist pairs" ever giving us some of the best solos in rock. People sometimes refer to Dickinsons voice as "opera like", and although I kind of dislike that term, the Dickinson era has a decidedly more "theatrical flavour" than other lineups.

There are a few problems. To my ears the drumming is rather routine and unexciting. And the drums sound rather tinny and lacking in power. A common production problem for most bands, but it's distracting. And the epic final two songs Powerslave and Rime Of The Ancient Mariner can, if I'm not in a receptive mood, sound rather monontonous. If I'm "feeling" the album, then they have a kind of heavy but hypnotic feel, but sometimes they just bore me.

That's the bad news. Other than those minor quibbles of mine, the rest is a gold mine of heavy music. And I *still* love hearing the intro to Two Minutes To Midnight, twenty years on.

Like The Pyramids themselves, Powerslave is big, bold and who knows, it may be considered one of the Seven Wonders Of Heavy Metal in the future!

5 out of 5 stars Instant Clasic.......2007-06-14

Second only to The Number of The Beast, Powerslave is one of Metals greatest albums. Iron maiden has made a career of playing their own brand of Mrtal for four decades without skiping a beat. Timeless clasics on this album such as 2 Minutes To Midnight, Aces High, Powerslave and The Rhyme of The Ancient Mariner make this a must have for real Metal fans

5 out of 5 stars Iron Maiden's best ever album.......2007-06-10

Don't listen to the people who say Number of the Beast is better, because i think this is their best album. I know exactly what the worst song probably is, but even that is good.

1. Aces High: An excellent opener, and a bit unusual to have a 20th century song. 10/10

2. 2 Minutes to Midnight: The song that i cant stop singing whenever i hear it. Awesome lyrics and intro, plus chorus. One of the world's best songs. 10/10

3. Losfer words: Somehow the guitaring sounds somewhat like the f-zero soundtrack. Nonetheless, a good song. 8/10

4. Flash of the Blade: Not a favourite of mine, but still good. 8.5/10

5. The Duellists: The highlight of this track is the chorus and the lyrics. 9/10

6. Back in the Village: The worst song, but still good anyway. 7.5/10

7. Powerslave: This is a very strange song which ive never seen anything like before. But i like it a lot, even if it is very long. 9/10

8. Rime of the Ancient mariner: Longest ever song from iron maiden, but what if it is? The song is still brilliant and shouldnt be underrated. 10/10.

UP THE IRONS!

5 out of 5 stars Crowning of the Metal Kings.......2007-04-22

By 1984, Iron Maiden already had already released 2 back-to-back classic albums and they showed no signs of slowing down. Nobody expected them to make a record better than 1982's The Number of the Beast.

But they did.

For 1984 was the year that Iron Maiden forced the metal world to drop down to its knees and gaze in wonder as their 5th album, Powerslave, was dropped to the public.

There are absolutely no weak tracks on Powerslave. Classics "Aces High" and "2 Minutes to Midnight" start off the masterpiece, and is followed by the excellent instrumental "Losfer Words (Big `Orra)". "Flash of the Blade" features amazing vocals by Bruce Dickinson (as usual), and "The Duelists" has some great rhythm work. I love the "fight to the death" line at the end. Next is "Back in the Village", a continuance to "The Prisoner" from The Number of the Beast. With song 7 the album completely hits a new high and never returns. "Powerslave", written by Bruce Dickinson, is a masterpiece about a pharaoh struggling to come to grips that he cannot reign forever and must die. The album closes with Iron Maiden's biggest and most ambitious closer, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". The song is based on the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Iron Maiden are at their peak here. The guitars have the best sound that Dave Murray and Adrian Smith have ever accomplished. Bruce Dickinson pushes his amazing vocals to the limit on every song (except the instrumental, mind you). Bass god and Iron Maiden leader Steve Harris plays every note with pinpoint precision. Nicko McBrain does a phenomenal job (as always) on the drums.

After Powerslave, Iron Maiden were arguably the most powerful metal band on the face of the earth. The massive World Slavery tour followed and by the end of it the world was bowing to Maiden.

So go buy this record, its Iron Maiden at their best.

They would, however, create another record that is just as good as Powerslave, but that wouldn't happen for a little while.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING: DO NOT BUY UNTIL U HEAR THE PREVIEW..........2006-10-22

I've heard quit a few tributes to IM, but this one really blows. The music just has no dynamics, and sometimes even sounds out of tune. If u want to waste some money on classic instruments performing IM songs i recommend that you buy THe Piano Tribute, but do not even bother with this one. It is a rather experimental attempt to play already perfected music and doesn't even give you that satisfaction that you might have had if you are a Metallica fan and have listened to Apocalyptica's tribute to them.

Being an Iron Maiden fan i thought this would be a good one. But Stupid me i didn't read the warnings from other buyers. This is the worst cd ever. well if you pretend its not iron maiden songs being destroyed, i guess it may be acceptable. A waste of money. i will probably toss it out with the rest of the trash. This is my opinion. DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen to the warnings of others PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Comparatively Disappointing.......2004-12-19

I am a big fan of almost all "String Quartet Tribute to -" 's, but this one is an exception. The arrangements are rather poor and on some tracks, the instruments are slightly out of tune - which is really distracting. They add a set of bongos / congos into the mix, and it feels really foreign and out of place. As much as I love this genre and Iron Maiden, this tribute really does justice to neither.

3 out of 5 stars LOL.......2004-10-08

When i Heard the sample tracks it just made me feel like turning on some REAL Maiden.

Having been around for nearly a decade by this time, Iron Maiden's sound was developing from their early punk-styled streetwise songs to complex masterpieces. The Number Of The Beast saw the beginning of this change. The band's 1984 release, Powerslave, was the moment where their new style shined it brightest.

Like the previous release, 1983's Piece Of Mind, this album has the classic, and most likely the best, Iron Maiden lineup. Bruce "The Air Raid" Dickinson takes the forefront and vocals and sings with raw energy and power while having refined his ability over the last two albums. Guitarists Adrian Smith and Dave Murray play the harmonies that are so tight it's hard to imagine how they pull it off. They also let off some blazing solos when the time comes. As always, bassist and main lyricist Steve Harris lets himself be heard in the low end as he pounds, slaps and jams with the rhythm of Nicko McBrain, whose drumming is masterful and incredible.

The album starts off with the classic Aces High. The song starts a little slowly but once the harmony and rhythm kicks in, you know your time has come. The song is fast paced; hard, heavy and powerful with some great guitar work and a showcase of Dickinson's vocal refinement. Next comes another classic and live favorite: 2 Minutes To Midnight. Slower than the previous song, the guitars are very tight while the rhythm is powerful as Dickinson sings away with perfection. Next is Losfer Words (Big Orra), which is one of the 4 instrumentals that Iron Maiden has recorded in their career. A very cool song, the guitars shine, the bass is all over the place and the drumming is solid and consistent. Flash Of The Blade comes next and this is an awesome song about fighting and being a swordsman. The opening guitar is pretty interesting but blows into a hard song that rocks until its over. Not much to say about this song except awesome.

Another song about fighting, The Duellists follows up. It is basically a continuation of Flash Of The Blade with the heavy guitars and pounding rhythm but it is definitely a great song. One of my favorites on this album, Powerslave is an incredible song. Right away, the song hits home with heaviness. Dickinson steps in with the microphone and sings incredible lyrics about an evil Egyptian god. The guitar of the pre-chorus is cool and gives the song and evil type sound but the chorus is where everything shines. Dickinson's vocals soar while the other instruments play something similar to a march or even their signature galloping sound. The song breaks down into a soft piece but picks up again and ends in perfection. The final song, the longest song Iron Maiden has ever done, is Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. All any fan can say about this song is "wow". Its is simply incredible. The guitars gallop, the bass pounds, the drums flow and Dickinson's vocals are amazing. The breakdown with the spoken part is eerie but cool. And like the song Powerslave, the song comes full circle and ends perfectly. Words can not begin to describe this song.

Among Iron Maiden's 12 studio albums, a majority of fans vote this album to be one of their favorites. It has everything Iron Maiden stood for from the beginning. Although a number of these songs aren't played live anymore, they are still classics in their own right and you have to love each and every one of them. I recommend this for every Maiden fan and any fan of metal in general. Go on. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Iron Maiden's Finest Hour. Im losfer words..........2006-03-21

Powerslave (1984.), Iron Maiden's fifth studio album

By the mid-1980's, Iron Maiden was one of the top metal bands out there and this was further seen in their great fan following. If being on top of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal scene at the start of the 1980's, with albums such as their self-titled debut and follow up 'Killers' was not enough, the band then made history with the seminal metal classic, 'Number Of The Beast' and then followed it up with the even better (in my opinion) 'Piece Of Mind'. The question was, could this band keep on producing such awesome heavy metal. After a long tour, the band went back to the studio and produced the 'Powerslave' album; their longest work at that point. This album has gone on to be a firm favourite amongst a number of fans but often languishes in the shadow of it's two predecessors. However, is this a fair reflection on the album?

'Powerslave' is in many ways, the last of the straight up metal albums for Iron Maiden in the 1980's, as later releases would explore the bands more progressive side. However for me, this album represents the peak of the band's powers. 'Powerslave' is a monster of an album, featuring blisteringly heavy riffs and consitently great tunes. Also though, more so than previous releases, the album explores more longer and epic songs. In many ways, this is where the album succeeds as these songs are able to keep the listener interested throughout, with plenty of captivating sequences. This is chiefly demonstrated with the title track and the 13 minute epic 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner', showing the culmination of the band's songwriting ability. The album also features two of the band's greatest singles in 'Ace's High' and 'Two Minutes To Midnight'. Guitarists Adrian Smith and Dave Murray are in blistering form throughout the album, jamming out diverse and varied metal riffs and plenty of great solos, most notably in the 'Powerslave' song. Theres great drumming from Nicko McBrain and Steve Harris shows yet again how well the bass can be played (you could almost describe him as the 3rd guitarist in the band - his bass lines are that impressively dominant in the songs). Bruce Dickenson is well... Bruce Dickenson, vocals legendary as usual.

Not too long ago, the Iron Maiden catalogue got totally remastered and improved. Hence the 1998 remasters are the way to go. The remaster job is great and all of the songs shine through with no sound glitches but also the recent version features and excellent accompanying booklet. The CD itself also has an enchanced multimedia section and you can view video footage of the 'Aces High' and '2 Minutes To Midnight songs from your PC.

The well known opening riff to 'Aces High' gives a classic start to the album. This opener then bursts into top form fast metal from the band. Another song with a World War II theme, which the band are quite fond of in their songs, this is a great start to the song, with the chorus especially the highlight. An even better follow up in '2 Minutes To Midnight'. This is one of the few 6 minute songs that really succeeds as a single. From start to finish, it is an entrancing song with great riffs, fluid bass lines and great vocals. The instrumental 'Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)' is next up. Like most instrumentals, this song is highly underrated. It's another song full of great guitar solos supplemted by a solid bass line. 'Flash Of The Blade', another highly underrated Maiden tune follows. Mellow and deep verse riffs set up a great song and are followed up by another great chorus line. 'Duellists' finishes the first half of the album. This song is mostly instrumental with occasional inspired vocal injections from Bruce Dickenson. The guitar riffs have a heavy but again mellow feel to them, however, it is a style that works very well in this song.

'Back In The Village' opens up the second half of the album. Perhaps the work's weakest track, this song is still no turkey. The song's racy chorus is awesome and the occasional linking guitar riffs are infectiously catchy. However, on this album, the greatest 2 tracks are saved till last. The 7 minute mini-epic 'Powerslave' is the first. The song incorporates Egyptian styled progressions (in tune to the album's cover) which work really well. Bruce Dickenson uses themes of Pharoahs and Gods in what is a great vocal performance on this track. Musically, the song has great chugging riffs and wailing choruses, plus a crazy explosive ending. However the best part of the song is the instrumental part, which has some legendary bass lines from Steve Harris coupled with some killer solos from Murray and Smith. Then, if things couldn't get any better, the 13 minute epic in 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner'. Some have called this progressive styled song overindulgent (it's Maiden's longest ever song), however there is no doubt in my mind and many others that this is one of the jewels in the crown for the band. Based on a poem by Samuel Coleridge, this epic never loses interest, whether it is in the lengthy verse riffs, the quiet but atmospheric interlude (which features creaking boat sound effects) or during the great harmonised solo section, which is Iron Maiden in full out attack. All in all, an awesome finish to an awesome album.

Many fans of Iron Maiden will say that the band's finest works were 'Number Of The Beast' or 'Piece Of Mind'. Both are excellent, classic efforts however I feel that this album tops them both, chiefly in terms of creativity and sheer power. 'Powerslave' is an album which never has a dull moment and represents the great band at their greatest height. 'Powerslave' is a must for any heavy metal fans collection, this is a perfect demonstration of how metal should be played. Don't miss out!

MY RATING: 10/10; a classic that rises above the rest

5 out of 5 stars One round of praise simply isn't enough!.......2004-09-18

Yes, this is indeed my favorite Maiden album. Everything about it is candy for the ears. "2 Minutes to Midnight" is still a lyrical masterpiece, and Steve Harris deserves to be put on a pedestal for his masterful working of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's famous poem into a heavy metal epic. If music buyers are seeking albums where all the musicians are playing at 100% efficiency, Powerslave is one of the best choices (ditto with Dream Theater's second and third albums) they can make.

BTW, anyone who says Nirvana is superior to Maiden needs to call a proctologist to find his/her head. You know who you are.

    4 out of 5 stars Here's Sand in Your Face . . ........2003-10-27

For Iron Maiden, following up the metal classic "Piece of Mind" would be no easy task, but the band proved themselves up to the challenge. With the release of Powerslave, and the subsequent World Slavery tour, the group arguably climbed to the top of the heavy metal heap, emerging as the most popular metal band of the mid 80's.

At or near their creative peak, the band delivers powerful, energetic metal, dominated by the guitar work of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. The music shows growth and maturity, while still featuring driving riffs, blistering solos, harmony lines, and signature time changes. As always, Maiden's sound is propelled by the aggressive bass of Steve Harris. Nico McBrain is a solid, and often flashy drummer. And Bruce Dickinson continues to carve out a special place as one of metal's finest vocalists.

Steve Harris often draws on novels or historical events as source material for his songs. "Aces High", his song about the Battle of Britain, is an extremely tight number that is one of Maiden's finest compositions ever. It features the customary alternating solo break, with Murray going first, followed by Smith, showing again their contrasting styles.

"The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner", is Harris's 13 minute epic based on the famous poem. It starts energetically, drags a bit in the slow middle section, but then finishes strong.

Powerslave, drawing inspiration from ancient Egypt, is another tight, and powerful musical journey. Creating a rich atmosphere, it transports you there to feel the pain and despair of that time period. The Egyptian motif was both the album's theme, and that of the World Slavery tour.

Blazing out of the gate, and humming like a motor, the guitars on "Back in the Village", never slow down. Murray and Smith continue to take their guitar playing in new directions, with their individual sounds meshing almost perfectly on this powerful number.

Swordplay is the theme of two songs. Penned by Dickinson, "Flash of the Blade" is a dark tune with some interesting lyrics. Not particularly "heavy", it features some tasteful guitar work, and an unusual opening riff. "The Duelists", written by Harris, is a heavier, more traditional Maiden tune, with classic elements like time changes, arpeggios, duel solos, and harmony guitar. This under appreciated musical gem, finds Murray and Smith at their complementary best.

The electrically charged "Two Minutes to Midnight", is Maiden's commentary on the politics of war in the Reagan era, and has gone on to become a concert favorite. Rounding out the album is the instrumental "Losfer Words", which is more upbeat and light, than previous instrumentals like, "Genghis Khan".

Produced my metal specialist Martin Birch, the music is very tight, and precise. The guitar work is magnificent. The band continues to refine what it does best, and explore new musical realms as well. The writing credits reflect more balance. Bruce Dickinson's vocals are right on the mark, and never seem excessive. Powerslave is one of Maiden's finest recordings, and a classic for the period, and the genre.

    3 out of 5 stars For 3 great songs.......2003-03-17

After Iron Maiden's overall best release "Piece of mind", things started to go downhill. On the one hand, "Powerslave" includes some really great songs like the opener "Aces high" - a fast rocker about pilots during World War II; The slower but very captivating title track "Powerslave", and the ending 13 minutes (?) long "Rime of the ancient mariner" which is built the same way as "Hallowed be thy name" (from "The number of the beast") with it's interesting changes in tempo. Steve Harris have revisited this formula several times later but in my opinion he have never been able to come up with something that's not a (pale) copy. These 3 songs are the albums highlight. Then there's two average songs: "2 minutes to midnight" and "Back in the village", but the rest is not good at all.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of their best.......2005-01-02

I don't understand the hype with this album, and I am a huge Maiden fan. In my opinion it is one of the weaker releases with Dickinson. However, it still has great tracks I enjoy listening to like 2 minutes to midnight, aces high, powerslave and rime of the ancient mariner. Losfer Words is also pretty good, but not as good as previous instrumentals. Also, I find that the other songs on the album are weak. If you are a huge Maiden fan I understand why you would buy this album, but if not I suggest checking out the self-titled debut or Piece of Mind, both which are better overall in my opinion.

I don't understand the hype with this album and I am a huge Iron Maiden fan. For me it is one of the weaker albums with Dickinson. However, there are still great songs on the album that I enjoy listening to including Aces High, 2 minutes to Midnight, Powerslave and the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Losfer Words is a pretty good tune, but not as good as their previous instrumentals. Apart from that, the other songs I find are weak. If you are a big maiden fan then I understand why you would get this album, but if not you should check out the self-titled debut or piece of mind, which are both better in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars SLAVE TO THE POWER OF IRON MAIDEN !.......2004-07-10

Powerslave was the breakthrough album in America for Iron Maiden. With such classics as Aces High, 2 mins to 12:00, Powerslave and Rime of the Ancient mariner there's no wonder why. The quality of the production is unsurpassed and, musically, the guys went to the maximum of their capabilities.

1-Aces high : The ultimate album opener. Fast and furious with a killer chorus. A masterpiece that is just uncomparable. 10/10
2-2 mins to 12:00 : It takes a special song to follow Aces high. 2 minutes does it great. 9,5/10
    3-Losfer words (Big `Orra) : A very melodic instrumental piece. 8,5/10
    4-Flash of the blade : A super fast-paced rocker. Very solid. 8,5/10
5-The duellists : Very unknown and underrated song. The guitars and bass are just amazing. 9/10
6-Back in the village : In my opinion, the most underrated song of Iron Maiden. Technically, their best ever. 9,5/10
7-Powerslave : You can almost feel that you're in Egypt ! Adrian Smith solo is full of emotion. After hearing this song, you will be a slave to the power of Maiden. 10/10
8-Rime of the ancient mariner : The best song of all time. A 13 minutes song of that intensity and excellence is a "tour de force". The masterpiece of all masterpieces. Bottom line. 10/10

For some, it's the ultime Maiden album, for others the middle part is weak. The songs need time to grow but they are brilliant. Maybe not my favourite but near the top. A must.

    4 out of 5 stars Powerslave.......2004-05-24

If you are a true Maiden fan, you'll love this cd. It contains possibly the best instrumental piece ever (Losfer Words). If you're a true Maiden fan you should already have this cd or get it right away. "Rimes of the Ancient Mariner" is the best 13 minute song based on a poem (Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge). Powerslave is an essential cd for your collection. Every song is true Maiden from "Aces High" to "Rimes of the Ancient Mariner". Possibly the best cd you could invest in.
