5 out of 5 stars Carcass's best effort, bar none.......2007-07-20

You heard me right, "Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious" is without question Carcass's best album of all time, and it also really stepped up the band's career as well. It's also one of the best death metal albums of all time, as well as one of my all time favorite death metal albums ever. This was the one Carcass album along with "Heartwork" that really got me into this awesome band. Whether they'd be goregrind/grindcore, death metal, or even melodeath, Carcass are truly one of a kind in the metal world.

Everything on "Necroticism" is just excellent. The production by Colin Richardson is just top notch here. The lyrics are great, and the album art cover is very creepy. The musicianship on this album is also top notch as well. You got Michael Amott (formerly of Carnage, and he would later go on to play in Arch Enemy) and Bill Steer's orgasmic dualing guitarwork, lots of great heavy riffs and awesome technical dualing solos throughout. Ken Owen is a great drummer. His double bass drumwork is just awesome especially on my favorite song "Corporal Jigsore Quandary" in which he does an excellent drum loop at the beginning of the song. Jeff Walker is a very unique death metal vocalist. His vocals can range from low death growls to high pitched black metal screams, and he also tends to use a cleaner approach to his vocals as well.

Every song on here is just excellent, but if had to pick some standouts, they would definately be "Inpropagation", "Corporal Jigsore Quandary" (my favorite song which I mentioned earlier), "Incarnated Solvent Abuse" "Symposium of Sickness", "Pedigree Butchery", and "Forensic Clinicism/The Sanguine Article". Overall this classic album is an absolute must have for all metalheads. Guaranteed to get those heads banging, enjoy!!

5. Incarnated Solvent Abuse (4:59) - 5/5
6. Carneous Cacoffiny (6:43) - 5/5

5 out of 5 stars Pedigree Butchery.......2007-07-13

Let me start by saying Heartwork and Swansong are MUCH more accessible CDs but this one is - IMO - their best CD by far. With every listen the love for this one grows.

Favs - Pedigree Butchery, Incarnated Solvent Abuse and the rest of the damn CD!

Consider yourself priveledged if you own this.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Grind.......2007-05-14

The best deathmetal record ever made and probably the best there ever will be. All the songs on Necroticism have character. They are all great complex compositions and have a melodic infrastructure. The songs fit eachothers to make this recording a piece of metal history. I cannot praise this record enough. It never gets uninteresting as new sounds are discovered everytime I listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Genre Transcending.......2007-04-08

I no longer listen to metal as much as I used to, but this is one of the few death metal albums that, for me, stands the test of time. It really is the apex of Carcass's career and really, of the genre as well. After Carcass and Obituary reached their peaks in the early 90's (while Cynic and Atheist were pushing the boundaries on the prog end of the spectrum,) there really was nowhere to go but downward into a glut of clone bands.
At the exact midpoint between their nauseatingly fast grindcore material and their more melodic, NWOBHM throwback albums, this one has the best of both world - medical dictionary derived lyrics, vicious vocals, speed and melodic leads - witness the choruses on the opener "Impropagation." Truly a keystone of the sub-genre and a landmark heavy metal album in general.

5 out of 5 stars Carcass Reached Perfection Here.......2006-12-09

Out of all the death metal bands I have listened to throughout the past three years of my life, I must say that Carcass was definitely the most influential death metal band of all time. Scratch that. They're the most influential BAND of all time. They have changed their sound and gained a wide fanbase during the early 90's. From goregrind to death metal to melodeath, they covered a whole spectrum of not well-known music.

If there is any Carcass CD that definitely stepped up the band's career, it is no doubt "Necroticism". The production is top notch here. It was muddy on their previous two records, as they tended to steer towards the goregrind side of music. With "Necroticism", however, Carcass shows their pure talent here and tells people that "We're not just a grindcore band, folks".

Mike Amott (of ex-Carnage/Arch Enemy fame) and Bill Steer's guitars are just orgasmic, especially in my all-time favorite track, "Incarnate Solvent Abuse". "Corporal Jigsore Quandary" has an excellent beginning drum loop played by underrated drummer Ken Owen. Jeff Walker is one of the most unique death metal vocalists of all time. He tends to use a cleaner approach to his vocals and steers away from the "grunting" and "gurgling" that makes death metal/grindcore so controversial these days.

This album is simply a masterpiece in the death metal genre. While it may not be as melodic as "Heartwork" and "Swansong" would be, "Necroticism" will definitely have some heads banging, especially for the death metal fans. I definitely recommend.

A masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Carneous Cacoffiny.......2004-10-23

Michael Schenker once said that when Punks finally learned to play their instruments, the music would be called Metal. Whether he was being facetious or remarkably astute, he was correct. Carcass, with roots firmly planted in the fledgling mid-80s Grindcore scene, created `Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious', an album widely hailed as one of the all time greats in Death Metal.

Because the band approached the music from a different background to traditional Death Metal bands, Carcass were not constrained by it's invisible but impenetrable boundaries, and "Necroticism..." is not strictly a pure Death Metal album, but contains a large Grindcore component. The progress in the years since the release of the bloody pulp of `Symphonies Of Sickness' and the indecipherable white noise of `Reek Of Putrefaction' was remarkable. The Punks had indeed learned to play their instruments.

Carcass' 1987 debut album `Reek Of Putrefaction' was a balls-out one-riff-per-song blast, with only one song passing the three minute mark, while many were considerably shorter, as was the old Grindcore tradition. Fast forward to 1992 and the band's songwriting and composition skills had developed to the point where songs were now six or seven minutes. Riff after riff was strung together, like a DNA double helix. Carcass adapted many songwriting conventions, like introductions, and rudimentary choruses, but part of the charm of this album is the delight they took in throwing in an unexpected blast passage or discordant solo.

Ken Owen's drumming in particular had matured from frenzied flailing, where he seemed to hit as many drums as possible as rapidly as he could, to a powerful, fluid and accurate sound, part Death, part Grind.

Part of the problem (or part of the charm, depending on how you look at it) with Carcass' first two albums was the indistinct guitar sound. It was loud and blurred, and so poorly defined it is near on impossible to hear what Bill Steer was playing, but was probably true to the band's live sound at the time. However, producer Colin Richardson reassembled Carcass' wall of noise on this album, brick by brick, so the riffs and solos shared and traded by Steer and new boy Michael Amott are crisp and clear, yet heavy and menacing. The opening passage of "Lavaging Expectorate Of Lysergide Composition" bounces along like an Iron Maiden riff on steroids.

Many bands missed the point of Carcass' lyrics and copied the gore theme while trying to be as offensive as possible. Jeff Walker's lyrics have a hidden depth to them. Yes, there are horrific gory passages, which are designed to shock. Behind the medical dictionary verbosity though, lays a witty, satirical sense of humour. Each song has a story to tell. Opener "Inpropagation" is a tale of using human remains as fertiliser. "Incarnated Solvent Abuse" is a recipe for creating glue from rendered down corpses, while "Lavaging Expectorate Of Lysergide Composition" explains how to get high from chemicals created by decaying bodies. Perhaps most repugnant is "Pedigree Butchery", in which human babies are processed as dog food, with wonderful lines like "Rheological, twisted nursery chymes/The fluxing of the defleshed/Paedophilosophical, carnage knowledge/As the illegitimate to the domesticated is fed". The lyrics are still completely indecipherable without a lyric sheet, while Walker took on a bulk of the vocal duties, rather than the three way sharing of the previous albums.

The overall sound of this album was far removed from Carcass' early albums, and quite a distance from most Death Metal bands of the time, except perhaps Bolt Thrower. Before `Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious', Carcass had been a bit of a cult band in Death Metal circles, too chaotic to gain wide acceptance, but their perverse lyrical bent was much appreciated. After this album's release however, all things gory and Grindy in the underground were loudly professing their love for Carcass. So imposing is this album that few bands have ever tried to imitate it's sound, and none have ever succeeded, not even Carcass.

5 out of 5 stars Artisans of the Dead.......2004-05-02

Simply put, this CD is the best of the best. The best BY the best. It's perfect. It's masterful and well put together. I agree 100% with everything the guy from Colombia wrote. It seems as if Carcass hasn't always gotten the recognition they deserve within the death metal scene, so it's nice to see them getting a lot of great reviews. For lovers of death metal, this CD needs to be in your collection. It's a staple. Don't be mislead by their name. This isn't Cannibal Corpse here. They may be similar in the way that they focus almost exclusively on dead bodies, but Carcass is on a level most other bands in this genre can only hope to reach. Necroticism is definitely my favorite. Their earlier stuff is true grindcore, raw and brutal. But this one is more refined and melodic. Yet it's still heavy. This band has class and intelligence. I think everything they've done is awesome. Necroticism is a great place to start. This was the first one I bought and it inspired me to buy the rest. It's amazing how they've transformed over the years. They have so much talent. What I find most impressive are the lyrics. Not just because they're filled with medical terminology, but also because they rhyme and flow so beautifully. Only a genius like Jeff Walker could turn songs about rotting flesh into works of art. Shakespeare would have been proud. Humour can be found in every song, but 'Pedigree Butchery' is the best. There's nothing funnier than feeding disgusting worthless human beings to a beloved canine. Who said morticians have no personality?

5 out of 5 stars Carcass delivers.......2004-02-08

This is a great carcass album. Thought not as good as heartwork, the two can hardly be compaired. This is much heavier and more brutal than heartwork. The songs are very good and extremly catchy. The only flaw in this album is the weak production.

4 out of 5 stars SINGING ABOUT THE UNHEALTHY........2003-12-03

This band was one of the best in grind period. With this release they got more melodic and technical than their previous efforts. The production is really good and the songs are also quite heavy. You got to love those intro samples on each song. The guitar work is really refined and catchy. No one could deny that these guys are talented even if you do not like what they are singing about. You should own this in your cd collection if you dont already have it.

I'm stunned I'm the first to review this cd. If ya like splatter gore metal played by actual professional musicians, with the precision of a scalpel slice to the chest. This is for you. Not for the timid. Easily on my top 10 list. Definate but or die.
