Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

A wonderful eclectic compilation. A bold step for Luciano that works! Very easy listening.

4 out of 5 stars great, but..........2003-06-16

the neville brothers don't belong here. they have fake voices that were made by marketing people. pavarotti has a voice trained over the years with tremendous preparation and hours and hours of classical training and lessons. it's like putting gary matthews jr. on a hitting show with ted williams. a big joke. but everyone else is great.

5 out of 5 stars Verry fun and risky but it worked.......2002-02-07

Pop stars with Opera singers, who would of thought. But it worls well. This CD is fun and has some wonderful proformances. Sting and Pav are very good together on Pania Angelicus. Sting is also good with Zucchero on Muoio Per TE. This CD sounds wonderful and is a must have for the fans of Pav, Sting, Kaas, May, Succhero, at all.

1 out of 5 stars I don't think so.......2000-12-31

This is not what I expected. I only like "La donne mobile." My mom only liked "Caruso" and "Panis Angelicus." This is not like the second on or the one for Bosnia. Those rocked.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album...the 1st in a wonderful series.......2000-12-14

This is the first cd in the Pavarotti and Friends series which benefits charities. The wonderful thing about them, is the mix of genres. And this one is no exception. Listen to Sting sing with Pavarotti on the beautiful 'Panis Angelicus', and 'La Donna e Mobile'. Who would have thought of pairing those two together. But it works with breathtaking magic. Just look at the list of artists on this disc and the songs performed. There really is something for every taste. From operatic songs to rock. I love this series, and highly recommend them to all music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Crash Course In Brain Surgery!.......2004-12-30

Greetings, All!
Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

This entire album rocks--and rocks hard, baby! In fact, IMHO, this is one of those rare albums where EVERY track is a gem (and we all know how few and far between those are, eh). This is definitely one of my island classics. I agree totally with one Mr. Sullivan's review, herein.

I have been a big fan of Budgie since the mid-70's. And really, you can't go wrong with selecting any Budgie title, as long as Tony Bourge is the guitar player; once Tony left the group, they just weren't the same!

I have always loved Burke Sheeley's rocking vocals. For a while, Budgie seemed like a revolving door for drummers. Pete Boot takes the honors on this wonderful album; and, he is very, very good here.

I own the entire Budgie catalogue, and, as mentioned above, any Budgie album with Tony is outstanding, but this one (if I were forced to pick) is probably my favorite.

The reason this album is at the top of my Budgie list can be summed up in one-word--LIVING ON YOUR OWN! This, folks, is a rock classic. I will go even further and call this a "rock epic." In a way, I'm glad commercial radio sucks so bad, because I feel these special Budgie treats are all ours (the fans), and no one elses. But, that is a bit selfish now, isn't it?

So, you should definitely go out and by this before they become unavailable. And, if you are new to this terrific group, and are just starting your collection, I would advise to start here; you can't go wrong, and you won't be disappointed.

As a side note, you followers of heavy metal--Metallica is on record as having credited Budgie as their major influence. That, right there, should say it all!

So, kids, you rockin' cats--go out right now and get yourself a course in brain surgery--get IN FOR THE KILL. Your neurons will never be the same!

Rock On, Kids,
Dr. Of Style

5 out of 5 stars This really IS "Spinal Tap".......2003-09-10

Not literally, of course, but this IS the band (along with a few others) that the satirical movie "This is Spinal Tap" was modeled after. They have also been copied by many big "metal" bands such as Metallica. If you are a metal fan, and I assume you are if you are reading this, and haven't heard this cd yet, then RUN, don't walk to get it. If you are a blues/rock fan you'll want to grab it also, because these guys really turn some blues inside out here.
This was the 1st Budgie album I ever heard and I've heard almost all the rest since, but none are as good as this one. Every track is worthy of 5 stars except "Wondering What Everyone Knows" (what everyone actually was wondering is how this "early Beatles" sounding tune got on this album). But every Budgie album seems to have that one "La La" track anyway.
I won't elaborate on every track here but I will mention that "Zoom Club" is my personal favorite, with a very innovative guitar part that includes what sounds like Tony Bourge either rapidly unplugging and plugging the guitar jack while getting great feedback or else he just had a short in his guitar cord that he knew just how to tweak. Either way it is some great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars HUMONGOUS GRINDING SLABS OF LAWNMOWER NOISE.......2002-07-27

Which is a good thing, of course, and if you don't think so, you may as well stop reading and go take a look at the John Denver catalogue.

I'll make this short and sweet. Listen to the first (yes, ONE) note of the title track. If you aren't immediately drawn into it and loving it, you have no heavy metal soul. Of course, when the riff kicks in, you'll wonder like I did why Hetfield and Co. didn't cover this tune as well as the two Budgie tunes they DID cover. If ever there was a spiritual successor to Metallica, IN FOR THE KILL was it.

Turn it up. Bleeding makes your ears tougher!

5 out of 5 stars a great lost album.......2001-04-10

I always viewed Budgie as a Sabbath doppelganger and this album sounds the most like the mighty four. The title track unleashes at you with molten riff after riff.Guitarist Tony Bourge sounds like a Tony Iommi with all 5 fingers in place.Crash Course in Brain Surgery kinda sounds outta place(spawned in 1971 actually)but it still rocks mightly.I never really cared for Wondering what Everyone knows,Riding my nightmare would have been a better fit.Zoom Club is where the band really shines for all eternity,a 10 minute jam with some lyrics thrown in sparsly,Bourge really shines on this track with devestating riffing and soloing, the best song of their catalogue in my opinion,I never get sick of this stuff.Hammers and Tongs at first listen sounds like a rip-off of some zep tune i can't remember but to me it's just a logical progression and i love the mid-section of that tune,Burke Shelley is an awesome vocalist once you can get over that high baritone.Running From My Soul is a tidy and short speed rocker with tasty bourge fills.Living on your own is the second next crowning achievement on this great album. With awesome riffing from Bourge and witty vocals from Bourge this song is only second to Zoom Club as the best song of the budgie catalogue.the mid-section of the tune borrows from "beck's bolero",but it's cool to hear that kind of stuff.it melds well with the song.If you don't own this album and you want to go beyond the Sabs, zep and/or purple then do your self a favor and grab this CD,it's awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Budgie still sounds good!.......2001-03-13

This is Budgie's second best effort (after "Bandolier"), great HEAVY music like "In For The Kill", "Crash Course", "Zoom Club", and "Running from My Soul". I had all of Budgie's stuff on old LP's, it wasn't until Metallica's "Garage Inc" rekindle my love for old 70's heavy music, great version's of Crash Course and Breadfan. I was always a great admirer of Tony Bourge guitar playing and Shelly's unique voice and bass playing that gave RAW HEAVY METAL a whole new meaning. Although 70's recording is not is not what it is today, I still find the music ground shaking, head banging and after all these years, unique as no HM band ever. Budgie was really, (in my humble opinion) the best Heavy band of it's time (Zep included, which I also love), guitarist Tony Bourge departure marked the end of the "real" Budgie, although I admired Burke Shelley's attempt to keep the Budgie going, it was never the same without Shelly/Bourge/Phillips.

4 out of 5 stars Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26

Music score was great. Paul McCartney and Wings. Movie well fitted for Roger Moore, a great candidate for this role.
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! The complete Live and Let Die Soundtrack.......2005-09-13

I have only been waiting for this for 22 years! Granted when this was first released on LP (Vinyl record technology, pre cd, pre cassette and during the horror period of 8 track tapes!),
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sound Track Ever.......2005-03-20

I just love bond movies and being able to listen to the music from them is just ausome

5 out of 5 stars Live and Let Delight.......2004-08-12

The remastered release of LIVE AND LET DIE is much improved. The previous issue was no different than the track line up on the original 1973 vinyl record -- or eight track tape, depending on your antiquated stereo. Not only does this release include additional superb tracks, some of the original cuts have also been lengthened and more closely correspond the the film soundtrack. George Martin, the Beatles producer, took the helm from John Barry in scoring the eighth James Bond film soundtrack. Though no one has yet equaled Barry's compositions for Bond films, which we have not heard since 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, Martin's soundtrack was perfect for launching Roger Moore's first outing as Bond. Let us not forget Paul McCartney's brilliant theme of the same name.

The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.

There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.

Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.

3 out of 5 stars Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16

Yes, that is my sentiment....in fact, it seems in all the other re-mastered Bond soundtracks, the best music is left out, and Live and Let Die was no exception.

George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....

Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.

But why the 3 stars rating?
We have to wait for Bond's 40th anniversary for the soundtrack's proper release, AND rebuy the soundtrack (I have it in cassette and CD and now the Re-master). Call me bitter, I think the people who runs the Bond empire should stop treating us fans so shabbily.

5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

5 out of 5 stars A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

5 out of 5 stars A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

2 out of 5 stars Just not the same.......2006-06-07

I got this CD cheap somewhere, mainly because of the dearly departed Rob Fisher, who I knew from Naked Eyes. This CD isn't bubble gum but it is watered-down saccharin pop and lacks substance. Climie Fisher is a different animal from Naked Eyes. Like NE, CF had just two studio albums and scant chart success. Simon Climie is best known these days for producing Michael McDonald's "Motown" one and two, as well as writing tracks for Amy Grant and Vanessa Williams.

This album is awesome if you know who Climie Fisher are. They are a British band from the late 80s early 90s. Good stuff but a bit of a 'love 'em or leave 'em" kind of album. I love it. It's great for wet windy afternoons wrapped up warm by the fire. Have some hot cocoa whilst you are at it.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good within the span of time allotted.......2001-11-08

It is disappointing that there are no "License to Kill" or "Live and Let Die" cues in this CD. Some of the remaining cues, such as from "For Your Eyes Only" and "A View to a Kill" are unfortunately brief.

On the other hand, the producers _did_ try to condense almost 20 years of music onto a single CD. Compare this to the first collection, which encapsulated about 10 years of music - obviously much more time to devote to each individual film. Ah, if only they could've done, say, a Roger Moore CD and then a Dalton/Brosnan CD. In any case, I didn't really miss "License to Kill" all that much - while it works great on film, Kamen's score here seems a bit too sparse and incidental (bordering on meandering) to really produce enjoyable standalone pieces. ("Brazil" or "Die Hard", on the other hand...)

That said, this is a rather fine collection. What's particularly interesting are the breaks from Barry's scores - the lavish string arrangements for Conti's "For Your Eyes Only" (if only they added the disco cues, but again see above comments) and Hamlisch's jet-setty "Ride to Atlantis" provide an interesting contrast from the string pads and brass fanfare that dominate the remainder of the CD. John Altman's "GoldenEye" contribution is a refreshing interpretation of the original Bond theme.

I happen to have the Rykodisc version of "The Living Daylights", so there's nothing new here for my favorite score of the Bond films. Seems also like they set the drum machine a little too fast for "Hercules Take Off"....

3 out of 5 stars How shall I try to put this...........2001-07-13

I thoroughly enjoyed the first 'Bond Back In Action', and I really tried to like this. While it has it's high's (like the 'TLD' and 'GE' parts, as well as 'TSWLM' and 'FYEO'), it had it's terrible, crash and burn, lows, such as: what ever happened to 'LALD'?? What, did it suddenly get lost? And doing music from 'TMWTGG'? That was some of the corniest music (Chinese overtones? I know we're supposed to be in the Far East and all, but please spare me).

One of the very first things I noticed when I got the CD: the packaging was very poor and just done very badly (like a trained monkey had put the thing together), and, in addition, the front cover of the case had a big 2-inch crack in it.

Sadly put: this CD could've been better. Lots better.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, not outstanding..........2001-02-11

I wish I could say I love this album, but it doesn't compare to Bond Back in Action 1. It seems like a lot of stuff was left out and some songs don't sound like the originals. Not that this album is bad, its just not impressive. After the first one, I was expecting more. But for Bond fans, what's included is good and is worth listening to.

3 out of 5 stars Perhaps Not a "Must" But Still Good.......2001-01-12

This the third anthology of James Bond film music done by Nic Raine and The City of Prague Philharmonic. The interpretations and performances for this recording are perhaps the best of the three. But as with any review of earlier film scores, there are ups and downs here. The good news is that there are several positives with this recording, including the performances and interpretations. Several of the sutites are quite enjoyable, especially "The Man with the Golden Gun," "Moonraker," and "A View to a Kill." Bravo, as well, to the "new music" from "Golden Gun," "Moonraker," and "Living Daylights." The best cut is "Fanfare" from "The Living Daylights," and this is no surprise, since Raine worked with John Barry on the original soundtrack. The down side includes music still missing: a full pre-credit suite from "Moonraker" and "Octopussy," and the "Welcome to India" flourish or fanfare from "Octopussy." Oddly, the best pieces are all by Barry, and the least impressive are the non-Barry inclusions which still fail to excite despite a noble effort by Raine. The music from "Goldeneye" remains a problem, there is no way around this reality. The packaging is disappointing, but adequate. Overall, however, this is still a very worthy effort and worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars "007 Films Scores by Nic Raine & City of Prague Gang".......2000-12-14

Silva Screen presents a follow-up to their previous releases of the most famous "Secret Agent" ever to grace the big screen - "The names Bond, James Bond!". Our bigger than life hero has appeared in many forms - Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan - all capable actors with an aire of complete confidence in saving the world.

To assist our hero are various film score composers - John Barry, Bill Conti, Marvin Hamilsch, Eric Serra and Monty Norman, all have attained immortality and classic status in film scoring. Monty Norman had done the famous James Bond Theme of sorts, but John Barry gave it the polish with a new arrangement, a guitar, different accompaniments and so forth...now recognized world wide as the most popular theme ever.

Nic Raine who was fortunate to work with composers - Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, George Fenton, Gerald Gouriet and Stanley Myers...but was passionate when he orchestrated two James Bond scores for John Barry - "A View To A Kill" and "The Living Daylights" and conducted both Silva Screen's release "THE CLASSIC JOHN BARRY" and "THE ESSENTIAL JAMES BOND" with The City of Prague Philharmonic.

This latest album "BOND BACK IN ACTION 2", with a faithful and outstanding interpretation in the form of suites which incorporate some of the best "action" cues - some material that hadn't been available before. Nic Raine adapted and changed the material where necessary for the demands of a 75-piece orchestra. This is a "must have" for "film-score-buffs" and "movie-music" collectors!
