Customer Reviews:
Best folk metal album out there.......2006-08-08
It really is.
The vocals are great, the songs are very imaginative and creative, and the sound is really refreshing and great. There really is no weak point of this CD. It sounds similar to their first one, and a bit more melodic than The Winters Wake. Its somewhat heavy at times but at the same time carries a lot of melody. The best tracks here are Pathfinders, Disappearing Sands, Jigsaw Puzzle, and the Perpetual Knot. They also have a very long song which is cool, called "A Poem for the Firmament."
I'm fairly confident to say that if you buy this album, you won't be disappointed, especially if you've heard the first Elvenking album.
Ground Breaking Folk Metal Release For Sure.......2005-01-05
Elvenking play a style of folk metal you do not hear too often. The sound is power metal but the instruments and songwriting has a strong folk element. A lot of times I don't like folk influenced power metal because the folk elements are too strong and don't mix well with the metal influences. In the case of Elevenking that is not true at all. They seem to sound just about perfect.
The first Elvenking release Heathenreel was quite good. For Wyrd they change singers although at first listen I didn't even notice. Another thing is Wyrd is produced with a little better sound than Hethenreel. In fact, perfect IMO.
This is such a breath of fresh air I really can't say enough about these guys. Just the other day I went to the website because I was really hoping they were working on another release. I kind got good news and bad news. They are working on the next release but they got rid of the vocalist they used for Wyrd and went back to their first singer. I guess it is not really bad news since I do like the first singer but I like the album Wyrd so much that I am a little disappointed to hear of a linup change.
Oh yeah, make sure you get the limited edition version with the 2 bonus tracks. Disappearing Sands is the first bonus track and it is as good as any track on the album and possibly the best track. A Fiery Stride is the second bonus track and although not a standout is still quite good.
I'm not kidding here folks. This is one of my favorites of all my CD's and I have a ton of Power, Death, Goth and related metal CD's. The great thing is that it is unique. I mean I love an album such as Edguy's Vain Glory Opera or Gamma Ray's Somewhere Out In Space but there are a lot of similar albums out there. I promise if you pick this one it is quite unique but still your power metal ear will pick things up right away as they don't go off in funky directions at all.
Must buy at any cost. Buy or burn in hell! God I'm praying they don't make any significant changes in the songwriting for the next album.
this album might need more than 5 stars.......2004-12-26
incredible, hands down, don't listen to the negative review that mentions the bands breakdowns seem forced or contrived, this band is able to change directions so flawlessly it should astound you, after hearing this cd and their first, heathenreel, the easily became my favorite band ever, i wouldn't really call it folk metal, because when folk comes to mind alot of people might get scared away by it, its not slow or lame sounding by any stretch, its an upbeat album, with a sound i can say you've probably never heard the likes of before, don't let the price scare you, believe me, some dude you've never met, buy this album with no hesitation.
Amazing Folk metal.......2004-12-26
This "Wyrd" album is one of the best I've heard in a while. They mix melodic power metal with a celtic music touch (sometimes more than just a touch). Very catchy but strong at the same time. Great vocals and musicianship too. Highly recomended.
Some bad/Some Good.......2004-09-13
The first time that I listened to this album, I did not like it too much. The first track was a bad copy of Nightwish and the vocalists (I was told by some people that the vocalist was replaced) showing no harmony and pretty much giving me a bad impression of this album and delivering something I was completely unready for after listening to Heathenreel. However the good news is that after the first track the album picks up a little, and by a little I mean a lot.
However the band changed and i am not sure that is was for the better. The lyrics now sound a lot more like standard power metal rather than the folky medley that they once were. Also the vocalists accent is now heard very easily. One thing that did improve on this album were the instrumentals. Elvenking's guitars now deliver very fast metal solos and the folk part of the band also improved greatly. However the arrangements and the combinations of metal and folk fall short. Many of the transitions seem forced and contrived. And at other times the band is forced to slow down to accomidate the mediocre vocalist.
Overall this album is pretty good just for god-sake skip over the first track and you will enjoy this album a lot more.

More breathtaking harmonies by The Wyrd Sisters!.......2001-08-18
After waiting months and months for the release of this newest CD by The Wyrd Sisters, I can say with certainty that the wait has been well worth it! The recording is marvelous--the vocals are moving, the lyrics are powerful, and the music stirs the soul. Anything produced to date by The Wyrd Sisters is definitely worth hearing--their sound, sort of a jazzy, bluesy, folky sound, is nothing short of captivating. I heartily recommend this CD--as well as this group's earlier recordings (Their first recording, LEAVE A LITTLE LIGHT was released only on cassette and, as far as I know, is only available for purchase in Canada.).

Customer Reviews:
Incredible women, Incredible music.......2002-11-22
I received two CDs in the mail as a gift from a friend. They were incredible! The music is powerful and the voices are so rich. I found myself swept away every time I played the CDs (which was a lot.) I found their website and can't wait for them to perform in my area. I wouldn't miss it.
I have had these CDs for over a year now and they are still at the top of the play list for me. These women create beauty through lyric and sound. They are truly artists.
What a find!.......2001-07-01
I stumbled on "Raw Voice" on a promotional CD of Canadian music I received with a magazine subscription. I really couldn't believe that I had never heard these women before. We have a pretty decent radio station that plays a variety of progressive popular music, and I'm still amazed that they haven't caught on. The whole package is a treat-- the melodies, lyrics, individual voices, harmonies and instrumental backup are all top-notch. I'm not sure exactly where the Wyrd's music gets filed-- I find it a unique blend of folk/rock/jazz/pop. I ordered the "Raw Voice" CD based on the quality of the title cut on my freebie sampler. I have not always met with success when following up on one good song from an unknown group, but this time the whole CD swept me away. I went on to purchase "Inside the Dreaming," the Wyrd's prior CD, and was in store for another treat. Favorite cuts for me from the "Raw Voice" CD are "Raw Voice," "Letter from You," "untitled," and "Borrowed Time." From "Inside the Dreaming" I find myself listening to "3000 Million," "Dance Little Brother," and "Farewell to Clyoquot Sound" repeatedly. However, there really isn't a song on either CD that I don't enjoy hearing over and over. I have purchased these CD's as gifts for just about every friend or relative I have with good musical taste and have gotten the Wyrds a number of new fans in the process. They've been tantalizing us with word of their new recording for some time now and I'm trying to wait patiently, hoping their next effort can match their previous offerings if we can give them enough time!
Amazing album and group ..........2001-03-13
Absolutely gorgeous CD ... alternately haunting and joyous. Definitely a moving portrait of struggle against odds. Very singable. One of those CDs where you don't have to skip any tracks ... everything is stellar. Lyrically wise, full of musical depth.
If you have a chance to see the Wyrd Sisters live, do it. They put on a gutsy show that succeeds in connecting with the audience. If you like anything from kd lang to the Indigo Girls to Jewel to any sort of older women's music (Meg Christian, Holly Near, Cris Williamson, etc.), you'll love this CD.

This first, full length CD recording was nominated for a Juno and testifies to the strength of The Wyrd Sisters' songwriting and vocal abilities. Songs like 'Warrior' have been recorded and sung by bands and choirs worldwide, and 'Farewell to Clayoquot Sound', a heartrending plea to save rainforests has been included on numerous compilation CDs. This is a 'must have' recording for thinking people with a discerning ear.

Inside the Dreaming.......2002-08-11
I cannot think of words with enough power to express my feelings for this CD. These women know what life is about, the beauty, the pain, the journey, insight, what's beautiful, right and tragic. The expression of life's journey through trial and tribulation flows among times of depair, rage, recovery and powerful triumph. Not recommended for shallow people.
Of this group's 4 recordings, this one remains my favorite........2001-08-18
INSIDE THE DREAMING is a spectacular blend of rich and lilting harmonies. It provides a wonderful variety of musical styles, and the lyrics are strong, meaningful, and deeply moving. I strongly recommend ALL recordings by The Wyrd Sisters (LEAVE A LITTLE LIGHT, RAW VOICE, and SIN AND OTHER SALVATIONS in addition to this one), but INSIDE THE DREAMING has a special magic all its own.
A Dream of a CD.......2000-11-16
I first heard this CD while my massage therapist was pummeling my back. Normally he puts on this dreary monotonous new age music that sends me to sleep. Not this time! Instead this wonderful fusion of folk, jazz and rock accompanied by crystal clear female voices came on. It made me forget even the pain of a deep tissue massage. The lyrics were so striking I almost sat right up. The Wyrd Sisters weave together their soaring harmonies and thought provoking lyrics into a beautiful ensemble of memorable tracks that get right inside your mind and your heart. This is one of the very few CDs that I have listened to in an awfully long time that literally sent shivers down my spine. There is a great range of styles evident here, from the haunting melodies of the title track and the rebellious and angry "Farewell to Clayoquot Sound", to the blues tinged "Another Dreamless Sleep", the compelling rhythm and lyrics of "Dance Little Brother", and the wonderful vocal harmonies of "Warrior". There isn't a bad track on the CD. I've no idea why the Wyrd Sisters are not better known, because they deserve to be. This is highly original, thoughtful and deeply evocative music. Buy it!
easy listening.......2000-11-02
I saw the WYRD SISTERS in Marquette Mi. at the music festival (Hiawatha). They're even better live. The band had such a great energy we couldn't leave until their last set was over. I would recommend them to anywone.
my absolute all-time favorite.......2000-01-19
Amazingly, I received this CD free via the Wyrd Sisters' agent. I was trying to track down a Laura Smith recording, and the agent mailed this to me. I can't describe how wonderful it is...As a musician, I appreciate the beautiful voices best. I could easily take the place of any of these women, having committed to memory every song. I give this to all my friends on their birthdays.

Album Description
"Wyrd" is an eclectic mix of prog-metal, jazz, rock and funk. On the disc you'll find jazzy chord progressions and melody intertwined with aggressive metal fusion. By implementing clean melodic lines and bursts of fiery technicality, the solos establish the common thread that holds this sonic chaos together.
