Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Could be better, could be worse.......2007-04-10

They Want You Silent, the first full-length by the metallic hardcore band Bloodlined Calligraphy, is an average metallic hardcore album that, unfortunately, doesn't manage to really stand out from others in the genre. While the album has admirable intensity and good production, it has nothing distinguishing--it feels like an album that any one of a dozen bands could have put out.

The album starts with the song "Shall We Dance", a song that, despite its quick tempo, is hampered by lead guitar riffs that seem strangely familiar and rhythm guitar parts that overuse machine-gun-like palm-muting to an unfortunate extent. The next track, "Demonstrating My Style", can be described similarly, with somewhat different riffs but an identical style and tone. Indeed, after the first track you are given nine more that are almost indistinguishable from the first. Are the songs good? Perhaps, but they grow monotonous even in this less-than-a-half-hour-in-length album.

The album is, I admit, well put together. The riffs, sounding rather melo-death inspired, are a lot less repetitive than those of many other bands. The vocals are extreme, even by metalcore standards, ranging from highs reminiscent of black metal to lows sounding much like As I Lay Dying. The rhythm guitar is typically solid, if dull, although it does manage to totally ruin songs at a few points with sheer monotony, such as in the ending of "Hammer to Nail". For a band that has nothing new to offer, Bloodlined Calligraphy stylishly presents riffs that you've heard dozens of times before.

They Want You Silent is an album that should satisfy some devoted fans of hardcore and newcomers to the genre. Those seeking the exceptional, however, should go somewhere else. Bloodlined Calligraphy is never outright awful, but neither are they a standout band in their crowded scene.

5 out of 5 stars Not A Kid!.......2007-03-14

First of all I would like to mention that I am not a child, but I decided that I didn't want to waste time getting an account to post my review. As for this cd, I am completely blown away for the comment back to the most recent review by BLC's vocalist Ally. The user said that she attacked his review/comment which obviously isn't true. All she said was that the review was not very insightful which I can also agree with. This is a band that I have come to discover and enjoy practically every song they write. I do not think they preach their religion and if they do that shouldn't matter because it is your choice to listen to this band. Ally should not be compared to the music of Arch Enemy or OTEP for a number of reasons. BLC although tinged with metal-esque riffage occasionally, BLC is a hardcore band unlike Arch Enemy and OTEP which in my opinion are metal. This band should not be ripped on because they don't play All That Remains guitar riffs and don't have a vocalist that screams in all different levels and sings too. This is a hardcore band! They do their genre very well and they should be regarded as one of the more honest and therefore good bands of hardcore. Hardcore bands have messages in their lyrics and I think hardcore bands that believe in their messages are that much more meaningful and good. Now reviewing the cd I have come to notice it may sound somewhat repetitive at times, but doesn't all hardcore? The stand-out tracks for me are "Not Another Teen Love Song", "A Variety Of Damage" and "I May Have Been Born Yesterday, But I Stayed Up All Night". All songs though are enjoyable on some level. I would also like to acknowledge that I listen to many different types of "heavy" music such as All That Remains,Every Time I Die,Comeback Kid,A Day To Remember,Story Of The Year,Evergreen Terrace and many many others. The reason I said that was to show my variety of tastes to make sure I do not seem like a hardcore music junkie. Overall, this a great hardcore cd with a very talented front-woman and a solid lineup of good hardcore music musicians. I hope BLC continues to make music and wish the band luck in their lives of creating music. Also, Ypsilanti is a better cd than this one which is notable since it shows that the band is growing as songwriters.

5 out of 5 stars what i think.......2006-02-25

I think the review below this one is not very insightful. If you pick up our first CD, you will see that my vocal talent is just as good as Angela. For they want you silent, I decided to lay back a little and let everyone else in the band have the spotlight. Pick up our EP, The Beginning of the End, and you will see that I do have the ability, I just have tact to know when I should/shouldn't showcase my full talent.

Screaming low and high is great - but it wasn't appropriate for the full length.

3 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled, this isn't the next Arch Enemy.......2005-11-18

On the packaging of this CD it compared Ally to Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy and it also said that Bloodlined Calligraphy would be a force to reckon with. With incentive like that, how could you not be suckered into buying this? I eagerly popped it into my stereo and sat back, ready to be amazed. I was hardly amazed, more shocked than anything. I was shocked at how anyone could compare Ally's vocals to the devilish voice of Angela's. It's quite apparent that Ally could take a lesson or two from Angela Gossow and even Otep Shamaya. She seems to try, unsuccessfully, to follow in their shoes. That's no easy task, especially when, in each and every song, she preaches and preaches. I won't single Ally out either, she's actually the shining point in this band. The other members all need to take a step up and learn how to play their instruments better. There's only a few times throughout the entire CD where I was amazed by a few beats and breakdowns.

From the get-go it's quite evident that Bloodlined Calligraphy loves God. I think if/when they release a new CD they should take a hint from the masters of religious metal, Norma Jean. Sure, NJ is religious, but they're more subtle in their approach. It seems that BlC's main focus was on preaching the word of God so their lyrics took a backseat. The lyrics are horrible, particularly in ...Know When To Fold Em where Ally makes a song out of thank you's instead of just writing them in the booklet. I will admit that after track three the CD gets progressively better. Not Another Teen Love Song, which actually is, is probably the best song musically and lyrically. This is the only song that departs from complete, outright, religion. Hammer To Nail is an intense retelling of the Crucifixion. I like the message this song has. Basically, it shuns our world, saying we're the ones to blame for Jesus' death. A Variety Of Damage is a mediocre track with a stellar ending. Lyrically, it's one of the best songs, but Ally's delivery is a bit shallow. I May Have Been Born Yesterday But I Stayed Up All Night is a sorry closer. This band could've done so much better.

The best songs on here are Not Another Teen Love Song, Hammer To Nail, and A Variety Of Damage. There's definitely potential here, Ally's vocals are nice, especially her death metal growling she pulls out occassionally. I just think she should focus on singing and writing lyrics because if she did that, this band would be something wonderful. But until the band shapes up and Ally perfects her voice, they're simply just above average.

4 out of 5 stars "Just Buy It, it's worth it".......2005-10-16

In the world of female metal bands, there are some who have the ability to almost reinvent the genre, but there are some that just would have been better off never getting a record deal. This is not one of those bands. In my opinion taking ranks among some of the best metalcore bands out there, and completely destroying any foul reputation other mainstream bands may have given the genre. This band has a a great, original, and just flat out badass sound that is becoming increasingly harder to find. if you don't believe me, listen to it, you will like what you hear.
