This debut by the L.A.-based quartet is a hybrid of explosive rap-metal, politically incendiary lyrics, and wide-ranging cultural influences. The members are of Armenian descent, but their diverse stylistic background transcends easy cultural labeling. Singer Serj Tankian's throaty roar competes with any mosh-pit rocker around, but his real trademark is his emotional wail and refreshingly melodic singing, especially on songs such as "Spiders" and the condemnatory "P.L.U.C.K." Guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan lock in tight on the capricious arrangements of "Know," "Ddevil," and "CUBErt." Their musical diversity runs wonderfully wild on "Sugar" and "Suggestions" with dizzying shifts of style and intensity. The tracks "Peephole" and "War?" reveal the band at perhaps its eclectic best, with vaguely Eastern European-sounding guitar riffs, passionate battle cries, and samples provided by legendary hip-hop producer Rick Rubin. --Mark McCleerey

Amazon.com review
System of a Down's sophomore effort is a musically and lyrically ambitious 14-song collection that's even more left-of-center and powerful than their 1998 self-titled debut. Here the Los Angeles-bred foursome tackle everything from government ("Prison Song") to cocaine-crazed groupies ("Psycho") in a more pointed and aggressive manner than Rage Against the Machine. Serj Tankian's hardcore vocals and occasional Middle Eastern flourishes ("Science") contribute to the unique, ultra-intense, and quirky qualities of System circa 2001. Unexpected time changes and death-metal-like intensity give way to mellower moments, all of which make for demanding but irresistible listening. Toxicity is a masterful, unusual, and forceful opus. This release includes a bonus CD-ROM that includes behind-the-scenes footage, band commentary, and concert clips. --Katherine Turman

Landmark Metal Album.......2007-05-20
Working backwards from their latest album Hypnotize, I landed on Toxicity and it blew me away. I am a huge fan of their newest album, but after hearing Toxicity it became clear why the SOAD purists say what they say. Toxicity is truly astonishing. If you are a metal fan but have not heard this album yet, consider yourself in for a treat. This is practically a genre-defining album. What fun Rick Rubin must have had putting the icing on this incredible piece of work! Toxicity is progressive, aggressive, juvenile, and reminds us of the startling fact that, yes, they're STILL trying to build a prison! Another prison system, for me and you...
Musical terrorism (at its finest).......2007-04-23
I happened upon this album because i heard "Sugar" (or whatever that song is called) played on KROQ and my musical tastes changed forever. The album is a revolutionary breakthrough in musical expression, combining the experimentation of greats like Frank Zappa with the melodic ability of Nat King Cole. The mind-force that created this music (the collective apparatus that is the intellectual force behind System) is absolute genius. Every grunt, note, sound effect and scream is perfectly woven into the fabric that assaults the ears.
I have friends who hate this album as thy cannot get past the staccato resonance of some of the more popular songs, but in my humble opinion, these only add to the total experience that is Toxicity. This may well be System's masterpiece - although we can hope they find ways to outdo themselves in the future. The Bonus DVD was a nice surprise and at the time of my purchase it was available at the same price.
Toxicity is Pure Gold. 5 Stars.......2007-04-02
Being the devoted metalhead that I'am today, I'll honestly say that I'm not a big fan of nu metal whatsover. Normally I'm a huge fan of death metal bands such as Deicide, Death, Morbid Angel, Nile, Krisiun, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, and thrash metal bands such as Slayer, Testament, Kreator, Sepultura, Anthrax, Exodus, Overkill, Megadeth, and so forth. However System of a Down are one of the better nu metal bands out there, heck I wouldn't even consider these guys as nu metal (I would consider them as hard rock or alternative metal) because they are very good at what they do, and they do it a whole lot better than all of the other crappy nu bands out there. Their 2001 masterpiece Toxicity is just an incredible mindblowing album. While not as good as their 1998 self titled debut, but this album is pure gold nonetheless. I mean this is one of those albums along with "Vulgar Display of Power" by Pantera, "Reign in Blood" by Slayer, "Beneath the Remains" by Sepultura, and so forth that I can just listen to over and over again and never ever get tired of it no matter how many times I listen to it. Producer Rick Rubin does a fantastic job with producing this album. What separates SOAD from most god awful nu metal bands are two things: GOOD musicianship, and GOOD lyrics (not the typical I hate mommy and daddy garbage). SOAD's lyrics are mostly pollitically charged and not only do they make you think at times, but they also make you laugh at other times as well. Serj Tankian's are very awesome on here. He can go from an crazy insane rant like shout to a cool melodic singing voice. Daron Malakian is without question far more superior than any other nu metal axeman alive. His weird yet great heavy riffs are just down right catchy and they'll make you bounce and bang your head like crazy. He also does good backing vocals too. Shavo Odadjian has some pretty cool bass lines on here (listen to "Prison Song" for instance). John Dolmayan's drumming is fast, energetic, and just downright crazy.
Here are some of the highlights of the album:
The opeing track "Prison Song" is a fast energetic, catchy opener with fast raging riffs and hard boucing drums to boot. Lyrically this song deals with of course politics, prisons, police corruption, and everything else wrong with the legal system. This is one of the best songs on here and of my favorites as well. Track two "Needles" is another fast catchy number with a hilarious chorus. "Deer Dance" is another great track that follows the same subject matter in "Prison Song" this time in a more serious fashion. There's even some riot topics thrown into the mix. Track four "Jet Pilot" is another favorite that starts off with Serj angrily ranting over a barrage of fast thrashing riffs and fast pounding drums. And of course let's not forget about "Chop Suey" the album's first single of course. Man, words just cannot describe how catchy and addicting this song really is. This is without a doubt the best song on the entire album, and it's another one of my favorites on here as well. "Bounce" is a short but fast energetic number that will make the listener like the song title says bounce. Track eight "Forest" is another one of my favorites on here which includes some great headbanging riffs that will make you feel like you've been bodyslammed in a wrestling ring. Another one of my favorites and of course my personal favortite that being track twelve "Toxicity". Lyrically this song deals with city life and the poisons in it. The lyrics on this song are just pure bliss to me, and Serj's vocals are great as well. Track thirteen "Psycho" (crazy song title eh) I believe deals with crazed cocaine groupies. There's also a cool guitar solo from Daron included. The closing track "Aerials" is a nice slow rocker with great singing vocals from Serj that are pure bliss. Great album closer bottom line.
Here's the entire song list and the ratings:
1. Prison Song (3:21) - 5/5
2. Needles (3:13) - 5/5
3. Deer Dance (2:55) - 5/5
4. Jet Pilot (2:06) - 5/5
5. X (1:58) - 5/5
6. Chop Suey (3:30) - 5/5
7. Bounce (1:54) - 5/5
8. Forest (4:00) - 5/5
9. Atwa (2:56) - 5/5
10. Science (2:43) - 5/5
11. Shimmy (1:51) - 5/5
12. Toxicity (3:38) - 10/5 My favorite song
13. Psycho (3:45) - 5/5
14. Aerials (6:11) - 5/5
Well there you have it, this album overall is a must have for any fan of System of a Down, metal, hard rock, alternative metal, or just good music in general. Sure SOAD may NOT be as fast, agressive, and heavy as Slayer, Kreator, Pantera, and so forth, but they're a solid band nonetheless. Bottom Line: Buy this album now.
Loved it.......2007-02-21
I loved it. It comes at you fast and heavy. It took me a while to get into their music...now I'm hooked!!
I LOVE this album!.......2007-02-01
The driving beat, the sometimes amusing, sometimes political lyrics, the wailing guitar - everything. If you like a strong rock/metal influence with heart - give SOAD a try! These guys ROCK!

Four CD's and nearly ten years into their career, System of a Down continue to be the Gilbert and Sullivan of this generation, delivering razor-sharp political commentary via beautiful, quirky melodies and discordant harmonies.
The group has mastered the ability to be both successful and subversive--with 2001's Toxicity selling over six million copies and debuting at number one on the Billboard charts, their success in indisputable. As far are their subversive-ness, the lyrical content on Mezmerize is a solid stream of anti-war, anti-corporate and anti-celebrity sentiment. The disc's first single proves as beautifully schizophrenic as anything the band has released. "B.Y.O.B." opens with guitarist Daron Malakian's rapid-fire riff, then frontman Serj Tankian's anti-war screams of "Why do they always send the poor?"; less than a minute later, a nearly-surreal jump to a facetiously perky, beach party chorus that could easily be found on a Britney or Justin record: "Everybody's going to the party/have a real good time." Guitarist/co-songwriter Malakian takes increased vocal time on the disc, including the hilarious, size-obsessed "Cigaro" and celeb-slapping "Radio/Video". Witticism aside, musical and lyrical intensity peaks with the operatic "Question!" and the emotional piledriver that is "Sad Statue", the group¹s unflinching statement on war and Lady Liberty.
The only shortcoming of Mezmerize is, quite simply, that it is short. Clocking in at a mere 38 minutes, the reason given is that this release is one-half of a two CD set--with part 2, Hypnotize, expected in late fall 2005. --Denise Sheppard

Awsome.......2007-08-03
When it comes to bands being fast and or heavy, I like bands to be both. This album isnt that heavy, but it's very fast. I like it alot. It's unique, funny, and it's an album that all fans will probobly enjoy.
They try, but fail...and no system can help them now.......2007-03-11
Sad state of "rock" today, I mean when I read that this band is actually trying to bring back 70's type "art" rock with their format, I want to hurl. If you want that, then listen to Yes or Blue Oyster Cult or what have you. Don't grab an album from hacks that cannot play who are trying to rehash an old formula. The result is a lot of uninspiring garbage. Poor vocals yelling the typical anti-war slogans, I mean that is great if they were the first but Pearl Jam, Ministry and KMFDM have been doing it for years now. Suddenly we are supposed to find meaning coming from a Darren/Darin/ who spells it D-a-r-r-o-n? Worst songs are Revenga and Cigaro but none of them get as high as three stars in my book. Needless screaming, pointless yelling and guitar chords that slam and chug with no direction. So yeah, I would suggest check out some other bands before jumping on this bandwagon, which has already hitched onto the coattails of about every idea that has come along in the past 30 years. Uneventful, moderate at best, but for the most part just not music. Show some meaning in the lyrics, or some intelligent playing. I know garage bands that have more purpose, but hey these guys got signed so now everyone is assuming it's what's for dinner.
A CLASSIC.......2007-02-20
i've been listening to this album (and hypnotize) since they came out, and am convinced they are one of the best bands out there. there are some people that only like their first two albums, and don't like these. fair enough, everyone has different tastes. to the people who don't like the political content, you shouldn't be writing a review, because you probably don't understand it. there isn't a whole lot of great music out there right now, but if you like awesome harmonies and good hard rock, get this. if not, don't. what do i care?
No musical value, whatsover!!!.......2007-01-19
I feel sorry that this was the first album that I heard from this group, because now I don't feel like listening to anything else from them. Each and every song on this CD is just plain F-L-A-T. Geometrically, one could depict the music on this album as a straight line. There's hardly any melody in the music. This seems to be a bass-and-drum-happy group for there's nothing else to their music. Lead vocalist sings in a flat note throughout the album, prompting me to paste a you've-heard-one-you've-heard'em-all label on this CD. After listening to the CD fully, I was unable to recollect even a single tune, so noisy this album sounded to me.
Surely, there's plenty of following for this kind of noisy and "thrash" music in western part of the world, but how can one call this music when there's hardly any in it? Attribute it to my conditioning, since I was born and brought up in India where the music tends to be very melodious and is composed of catcy tunes, but I found this album to be absolutely worthless. A few people may have a notion that heavy metal music cannot be melodious, but they just need to listen to Metallica, Guns n Roses, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, Lamb of God,.....to see how melody can be infused by skilful singing and proper lead-guitar playing. SKIP IT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A MUSICAL EXPERIENCE! I highly recommend SAW 3 soundtrack that I am currently listening to in this album's place. It is ABSOLUTELY ROCKING!!!
Well almost perfect.......2006-12-31
After listening to Hypnotize a whole bunch of times, I wanted to hear some more SOAD, so I got Mezermize and it is SO GOOD, but not perfect. Why? I'll explain; Daron get's more vocal time, now I don't have a problem with that, it's just that his voice is just too low compared to Serj's rich vocal's, but once you get used to Daron's voice, you will like the song's that he get's the most airtime on like 'Lost In Hollywood' where he sing's the whole song while Serj just moan's in the background.
The album start's out with the last song on Hypnotize 'Soldier Side' (on Hypnotize, it's a very haunting song even after having the album for eight month's and listening to it countless times and perhap's the most darkest song that SOAD has sone since their first self-titled debut album). BYOB (Bring Your Own Bombs) is a anti-bush and anti-war song with the lyrics's "Everyone's going to the party have a real good time." where they are talking about Bush spending ten's of millions on his presidential party while thousand's were dead from the tsunami in Southeast Asia.
Another anti-war song is 'Sad Statue', while some some songs on this album that are anti-celebrity, and anti-coporation like 'Radio/Video' and 'Cigaro' where they poke fun at the music industry and coporation's, while some song's on this album are just pure SOAD; 'Violent Pornography', 'This Cocaine Make's Me Feel Like I'm On This Song' and 'Revenga'.
So to answer your question, is this the best SOAD album? Well it's comes pretty close to being perfect while it is not Toxicity or System of a Down (their first album), but enjoy this while it last because it is going to be at least a couple of year's before SOAD hit's the studio again because according to Daron they are going to take a much-needed break 'for a few year's'. Thanks for reading my review.

Closing out the second half of 2005 just as its predecessor Mesmerize closed out the first, Hypnotize completes System of a Down's finest hour to date. The two albums form a lean and nearly perfect whole that places this Los Angeles collective in league with the likes of Smashing Pumpkins and Pink Floyd. System has created an enduring body of work that challenges conventional notions about the nature of the contemporary rock album. More practically, they have given listeners a fine second act that attacks and attacks hard, inspiring as much headbanging as vintage Metallica and as thought-provoking as the Minutemen and the Dead Kennedys. (Vocalist Serj Tankian's barbaric yawp sometimes calls to mind head Kennedy Jello Biafra.)
The album's first half features the most brutal, perfect and direct rock `n' roll that's come down the old mainstream this year: "Attack," "Kill Rock `n' Roll," "Tentative" and "U-Fig" lead the charge while "Holy Mountains" gracefully moves us toward this epic's final challenging moments. Latter tracks such as "She's Like Heroin" (Frank Zappa's idea of The Three Penny Opera) and "Lonely Day" fail to maintain the intensity heard early on but not don't prevent Mesmerize and Hypnotize from coming together as one of the most definitive heavy rock albums of the decade. --Jedd Beaudoin

I am not hypnotized yet.......2007-07-22
I was under the assumption that this is a software program that will allow the listener to become hypnotized. Maybe my high rate of intelligence combined with a will to stay sane and normal is blocking the use of this software and its ability to hypnotize me. All I hear is a lot of broken down cackling and shouting, like a guy with his shin sheared off in a bear trap or something you knows. Pretty lame software, I am returning it for a full refund.
Hypnotize, by System of a Down.......2007-05-13
This cd is excellent. Every song on it is a winner. I love it.
System does it again.......2007-04-12
System Of A Down started of with their debut self-titled which was ok, and then they released Toxicity. Phenomenal album. They then released Steal This Album! and then Mezmerize. Now Hypnotize, which is everything that Mezmerize was, but not as good. SoaD's vocalist Serj Tankian is one of the best I have ever heard, and the guitarist Daron Malakian is excellent and he also participated more in the vocals in Mezmerize and Hypnotize than any of their other albums. Shavo Odadjian, System's bassist. Phenomenal. Thats all i have to say. John Dolmayan is one of the best drummers of all time. Man, HE CAN PLAY, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THE BAND!!!!!!!!!! Hypnotize is a must buy for longtime SoaD fans, and if you are a new SoaD fan I suggest that you buy Mezmerize and Hypnotize together, 2 excellent albums good for newcomers.
My introduction to S.O.A.D........2007-03-27
I saw a lot of people at school wearing shirts / hats / backpacks with the system of a down logo on them. So I listened to B.Y.O.B., and loved it. Then for some reason I ended up going with this CD even though it didn't have BYOB; sometime this past summer's when I got it. - I LOVE THIS CD -
I now have all of System's Cds, but this is still my absolute favorite.
Attack - 9/10 - Politically bashing lyrics, awesome guitar riffs, great high-speed song. A good introduction to the album.
Dreaming - 9.5/10 - A really cool song. I love the music. I like the 'dreaming of screaming' part.
Kill Rock n' Roll - 7.5/10 - Kind of a pointless song, but it's...okay, I guess.
Hypnotize - 9/10 - I like this song a lot. It's talking about TV ads brainwashing us, and I agree.
Stealing Society - 8.5/10 - The first half is good, but the part where they keep repeating 'looking for a mother...' is pretty bad.
Tentative - 10/10 - My favorite song on this CD, and one of my faves by System. The chorus is depressing, but powerful "we're going down/in a spiral to the ground/no one's gonna save us now/not even God"
U-fig - 7/10 - I don't care too much for this song.
Holy Mountains - 10/10 - Oh yeah I love this one too!! It's so cool. it reminds me of the show Inuyasha.
Vicinity of Obscenity - 8.5/10 - This is a pretty fun song, with a cool beat. I love the 'banana terracota pie' thing.
Lonely Day - 8/10 - Eh, this one's alright. I don't no what possessed them to release this as a single. It's nothing like the rest of their music at all. It seems like a song that's trying to be sad and emotional, but S.O.A.D. really can't pull that off. Sorry to break it to you, guys.
Soldier Side - 9/10 - This song is sad just because of its topic. It's about young men dying in wars and waiting for Jesus to save them. I like this song a lot, but it's a little depressing.
Depends on what you like about System..........2007-03-22
Its true, whether or not you will love this album, I think, has to do with which part of System you like more. If you are like me and tend to like the faster, funnier, thrashier side of System's style of rock more than their alternative, mellencollie, more serious side, then buy Mezmerize instead of Hypnotize. I don't think this album was a failure compared to Mez, but I thought it wasn't as good. Hypnotize certainly wasn't nearly as fun or kickass. This album did have some decent headbanging tracks on it, but they are not as well written or as energetic as the Mez headbanging tracks. What this album did best is put out more of the good, soulful alternative rock based tracks System puts in everyone of their albums. Hypnotize is by far the best track, comparably as good as Aerials and Spiders. Lonely Day was pretty good too. But everything else was either half way decent(kill rock n roll) or bland and very similar to other mediocre System songs (tentative, attack, ect). What I love about both of these albums is how System hasn't lost their talent for catchy, memorable songs. They both have some not-so-great songs (Vicinity, Old School Hol.), and Darron's singing can get really annoying occasionally, like in Kill Rock. The lyrics were a bit more thoughtful than Mez though. They are more comparable to Toxicity. But overall this ain't a bad album, just not their best.

Customer Reviews:
And I usually hate metal..........2007-07-08
This album is freaking amazing, full of songs that are both Socially and Politacaly concious(Sugar, CUBErt, P.L.U.C.K) To just all around goofiness(Suite-Pee, ddevil). My only complaint is the over use of the f-word. I love this band, and I don't mind swearing, but they relied way to much on swearing to display anger in this album.
Still their best album.......2007-01-24
Hmm, how to start. There's a short list of mainstream hard rock/metal bands that don't suck, and System of a Down is right towards the top of that list. All of their stuff, thus far, is worth listening to, but the self-titled debut still stands as their most striking and consistent album. There are a few brief missteps, but it's an excellent album altogether, and it serves as proof that not every mainstream band needs to be totally dull and formulaic.
Though SOAD haven't totally revamped their sound over the years, the debut still has a fairly distinct sound within their catalogue. It's quite a bit more raw than their later albums, with a very explosive guitar sound and Serj still does pretty much all of the singing here all alongside some particularly frenetic drumming. SOADs trademark, frantic, jittery songwriting is fully-formed already, however, and it's actually better than it would later be, as it just feels more natural than it would later be and they eschew the out and out joke songs that would hamper more recent albums. At 13 tracks, however, it's got a tad too much material. The two shortest songs, Ddevil and CUBErt probably shoulda been cut. They're both kind of annoying, and 11 tracks is more than enough, especially since nothing else could be considered filler.
Anyway, there are a bunch of standout tracks. "Know" is perhaps my favorite track, with the best, most energetic chorus on the album. "Sugar" is a notable radio track, and it shows SOAD balancing their act nicely, as it's goofy with out being self-consciously so and still rocks plenty hard. "Spiders" is the other big radio song, and it's one of the most distinctive tracks. A very eerie track, for sure, with some especially strong vocal work.. "Soil" is another excellent one, with probably the most frantic drumming on the album and the most impassioned sounding vox to boot. Mind is another weird one which recalls "Spiders" slightly with it's combination of smooth, jazzy quiet parts and the eventual heaviness. "Peephole" is probably the most aggressively catchy song on the album and it has a fun pseudo-polka beat. Finally, the album closes with another particularly strong track, "PLUCK". This is another very typical SOAD song, mixing the wild, driving instrumental sections with the almost ethereal chorus.
Ehh, I ain't got much to say here. SOAD rocks, check it out.
Blows awaaaaay SoaD's other albums!.......2006-10-17
As in all musical taste, band sounds change with time along with the listener's preference. It just seems that the System is expressing how it feels, the deep end. Today's Hypnotize and Mezmerize doesn't get that sketchy feeling like this album does. Sometimes you just wanna listen to the core of a band, and this shows what the potential of emotion in System of a Down's sounds are. To make things brief, Steal This Album, and this album are my favorites because (not for the pathetic excuse have unique taste) it either
Sounds catchier
or
is deep, but within has the feeling of freedom.
Although it could pass metal without the overusage of f--ks and language, it is an amazing album. One shouldn't expect it to be mainstream music, and many claim it to be "noise", but what better sounds in the world are expressed with roars? A newcomer band starting out with this is great.
As in many SoaD songs an intro is brought in (Suite-Pee, Soil, Atwa, Mr. Jack, and a handful off of "Mezmerize", bringing a sometimes misleading climax. It turns out to be a twist and of course the outcome, outstandingly orginal, is pulled off. This is only one of SoaD's techniques that perks the listener.

Ahead of it's time.......2006-08-30
This CD had huge breakdowns long before those were popular. Sure, they aren't as popular as all the "hardcore/metalcore" bands around now, but the similarities to that genre are striking when after listening to that music for a while you go back and listen to this one.

With Rage Against the Machine disbanded, System of a Down ascend to the political aggro-rock throne, and with Steal This Album, the Los Angeles-based quartet prove themselves worthy to wear the crown. A play on the late activist Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book, the album consists of 16 System songs from the mid-1990s through 2001. The band stresses the songs are not "B-sides or outtakes"; in fact, they clearly show System at their apex. These smart, varied songs feature Serj's frenetic, staccato, Jello Biafra-like phrasing atop the band's edgy, commanding, metal-meets-punk base. From the funny, frantic "Chic 'N' Stu," to "F**k the System," "A.D.D. (American Dream Disorder)," and "Boom!" System keep listeners guessing with discomfiting time changes that match up with Serj's incendiary lyrics. In keeping with their creative, fan-oriented approach, System are releasing four limited runs of the CD, each version featuring artwork from a different band member. This is not escapist rock. It's an intense and eye-opening aural history lesson you can mosh to. --Katherine Turman

Originality, innovation, talent and expression!.......2007-07-05
System of a down represents an interesting proposal among the tendency to search, explore and experiment with imported elements of other latitudes (as a matter of fact, there is a well deserved homage to Black Sabbath in Boom!) and the result could not be more rewarding. These guys demonstrate to have a talent far beyond we might to denominate common places, their lyrics play hard against a state of things. On the other hand the way to articulate and ensemble the songs work out as a rock suite. They play and blend with mesmerizing originality new sounds that makes us to rethink the well known cry of battle expressed so many times along so many rock festivals: Long life for the Rock& roll.
rock hard fun.......2007-03-10
this album is one of my favorite albums from system of a down!!!! The only thng is you have to get the unedited version for it to have the full impact!!
softer and more melodic.......2007-01-30
This is a more melodic approach than SOAD's first album. It mixes elements of metal with melodic softer parts in the majority of songs, and these are the strongest. 'Chic n stu' has a melodic soft section, which makes the song shine, 'Mr Jack' is one of the slower and instantly likeable songs. The last six songs are really effective. 'Highway song' is extremely melodic and 'f@ck the system' is straight ahead metal, but effective. 'Ego brain' has a nice eastern feel and mixes tuneful with heavier parts. 'Streamline' has excellent ascending and amazing vocal passages, with orchestral overtones. 'Roulette' is an acoustic driven ballad. The melody and backing guitars/violins is exceptional, but the vocals are completely out of tune, the higher vocals are comletely flat ruining the effects and listen to the very end where they both sing 'around you' the high voice goes at least a semi tone out of key, and Serj seems to run out of breath and does an uneccessary pitch wobble. This is clearly a demo, and should have been polished more, as it would have been a standout.
'36', 'Pictures' and 'A.D.D.' are rather heavy and unmelodic.
Best of System Of A Down.......2006-11-03
All SOAD's albums are great. I like this one because every song could be a single. They're just too good. My favorite songs include: Boom! I-E-A-I-A-I-O, F**k The System, Highway Song...
1. Chic n' Stu (10/10) Great song. Nothing more. It's just a typical SOAD song that everyone has to love.
2. Innervision (9.5/10) Cool song. Kinda repetive and gets a little old, but it was a good single.
3. Bubbles (10/10) I like this song. Short, but very fun, and fast-paced.
4. Boom! (12/10) BOOM! Love this song. It's great, everyone should love this song. It's great, and the verses are intense because they're spoken. Great overall song, chorus is just crazy!
5. Nuguns (9.7/10) Pretty sickk song. Gets in your head right away. It's catchy, but just gets old after a long while.
6. A.D.D. (11/10) Awesome. Makes you go f**king crazy.
7. Mr. Jack (8/10) I'd say the slowest song on the album. Maybe. I don't like it that much. It's alright.
8. I-E-A-I-A-I-O (14/10) OOOHHH YEAH! Now here's a real SOAD song. Best song on the album. It's soo fun to sing to cuz it goes freakin fast. and the chorus is just awesome. The overall is exciting!
9. 36 (1000/10) Haha 30 sec song. Nothing more. It's pretty funny.
10. Pictures (10/10) Pretty sick. Very catchy, and good beat.
11. Highway Song (13/10) This could be a great single. I love it, especially how it goes along with Pictures. The chorus is great to sing.
12. F**k The System (1337/10) OMFG BEST F**KING SONG! IT'S CRAZY, IT'S AWESOME, IT'S FAST, AND IT'S F**KED UP! U CAN'T RESIST LISTENING TO THIS SONG!
13. Ego Brain (7/10) Not good. Even worse than Mr. Jack. It's slow, but not very likable.
14. TheTawaves (9/10) Pretty good. It's catchy, and fun to sing. The lyrics seem confusing though.
15. Roulette (10/10) Slow, and pretty sad. Simple to play on guitar. Fun to sing as well.
16. Streamline (10/10) I would say this would be the best ending song for SOAD. It's cathcy, and good tempo to it. I like the ending.
Overall, this was a very good purchase. I'd rate it 96/100. It's great, buy it!
The Second Guess.......2006-07-09
The first song through me for a loop... "I was like...ummmmmm" but then the rest of the CD followed and I was like "Outstanding... Still going" I even came to love that first song as strictly commical. These guys are the energizer bunnies of rock!

Closing out the second half of 2005 just as its predecessor i>Mesmerize closed out the first, Hypnotize completes System of a Down's finest hour to date.
--Jedd Beaudoin

system of a down is just getting better..........2006-01-28
...which is hard to do when your already the best band in the world. People who respond negatively to this CD do not appreciate the genious that Daron is. Either that or they haven't listened to anything but "Hypnotize" (the song). This is possibly the best album that soad has produced out of their 5 total cds.
could be better, could be worse..........2006-01-15
well, it could have been better. with that said, all in all it was pretty good, even though, other than "Steal this Album!" which wasnt really an album because it was just a bunch of unreleased songs by the band, it was probably the worst album of the lot, but it wasnt bad. strange as that sounds, it's true, it's a good album, but it's the worst by the band, in my opinion. that's still saying that it's a really really good album though. the dvd side is alright, if you can hook up a stereo to the tv for better sound it's cool because it's like listening to the album with a picture with it. the "making of" is a bit strange though, it's not really about making it. it's just a bunch(actually only like 15 minutes) of footage of the band, but only about 3-5 minutes talking about the album.
good cd, but bad format.......2005-12-19
I've never heard of a cd that doesn't work with all cd players. I was disappointed to find out that my home player won't play it. I think they should make a law that says in order for bands/producers to sell their cd's, they should make it work on all cd players. Luckily, it works on my portable cd player. I haven't tried the one at work yet, but I'm crossing my fingers. Otherwise, GREAT!!
Mezmerize/Hypnotize - 2 of the best CDs of '05.......2005-12-14
What a great $%#$@! band! I can't say enough about them. The biggest difference in Mezmerize/Hypnotize compared to their previous CDs is that Daron Malakian is singing more, which is extremely cool because you have two singers going back and forth on a lot of the songs. The lyrics on both CDs don't make much sense, which anyone who has heard the CDs, would know..! lol. Some songs have goofy lyrics with maybe a line or two that grab you like 'where do you expect us to go when the bombs fall?' on "Tentative"... other songs that make no sense is "Radio/Video" but just listening to the melody in the song you forget that and just really take notice of how unusual the music and singing are, I often play certain songs over and over because of that just like I did with 'Toxicity'. And who would've thought a song about celebrity softball would be so catchy, singing 'Tony Danza cuts in line' on "Old School Hollywood." "Lonely Day" is perhaps one of the standouts on the CD because of the raw lyrics and sad melody - it could easily be played at a funeral of a person that you will be missing after they are put to rest with lyrics like 'and when you die/I want to die with you/such a lonely day/the most lonliest day of my life'. HEAVY. The DualDISC was a letdown because the documentary, to me, was too 'Arty F@rty' and it reminded me of a lame student film by a college student and showed nothing normal or comprehendable for almost the entire running time. I watched it once and will never play it again. Mezmerize/Hypnotize are 2 of the best CDs to come out of 2005. Great band, I hope they are around for a long time. A very unique band.
Drop top caddie!.......2005-12-06
The second half is here finally. SOAD's "Hypnotize" is pure marketing genius. Who would of "thunk it" by splitting this two CD set and selling each half at separate times? I think the ultimate plan came out of the recording sessions by the band.
"Hypnotize" DualDisc is worth the price of admission. There is a big difference on the enhanced stereo sound of the DVD. The songs tend to jump out and clarify. I really didn't know there was a difference until I played it in my home digital surround sound system. Awesome clarity! I first played the CD side in my trucks system and thought it was a great sound. But after the home system sound was revealed how could I ever play this CD side again. As a bonus the artwork of both albums are revealed when playing the DVD songs.
The DVD contains a behind the scenes of the making of both "Mezmerize" and "Hypnotize." This one was perplexing because of the quality of the scenes shot. The scenes were of fuzzy and hidden like camera angles? It was like when you first got a digital camera and was shooting the different styles of filters. That was difficult to watch. But the interaction with the band was priceless. They are discussing the lyrics and meaning of the songs. The "BYOB" and "Question!" videos are awesome on a digital player.
Okay, the songs of "Hypnotize." SOAD starts the "Attack" on the first track. Then into "Dreaming", "Kill Rock N Roll" and "Hypnotize." All of these are consistent with SOAD's sound. The expermention still exists with "Stealing Society", "Tentative", "U-Fig" and "Holy Mountains." The bizarre "Vicinity of Obscenity" and the drug related song "She's Like Heroin." Then it is time to chill with a slower pace with the relatable "Lonely Day" and the long awaited complete "Soldier Side" ends "Hypnotize" but starts "Mezmerize." This is a vintage SOAD CD.
SOAD's DualDisc was worth the extra price because of the enhanced stereo sound. But I shopped around and got a price well below the CD only price.

Bad Company (Michael Wojcicki, Darren White, Jason Maldini and Dan Stein) have managed to set the jungle scene ablaze with a consistent barrage of drum & bass tunes. They have achieved digital domination of the genre's dance floors by merging bellicose basslines with sounds of the apocalypse and a production sheen that's so polished you can see your face in it. Shot Down on Safari shows a more diverse side to the crew. Tracks such as "Dogsploitation" (a splicing of Swift's "Blaxploitation" and their own "Dogs on the Moon"), "The Hornet," and "Snow Cat," show that the quartet are still prone to the odd hard-as-nails headbanger, but there is much more besides. The opening track "Mo' Fire" (featuring vocals from $pider and Navigator) is a pretty nostalgic roller, boosted by potent ragga basslines and adrenalin-fuelled percussion. There are guitar licks and soulful vocals on "Wednesday" and even a little samba on "Dr Schevago." BC have never sounded so versatile, and they are all the better for it. --Paul Sullivan
Album Description

For their 2003 North American debut, the BC crew teams up with Dieselboy's Human label and System recordings to present a brand new artist album. Includes a mix CD featuring 21 classic BC Recording tunes. Slipcase.

Pretty solid. Mixed CD is cool, but sounds like garbage--I could have a bad copy or something.
Only 1 thing keeping it from 5 stars.......2005-04-17
I do not need to get into the brilliance and the unmatched power and production that is Bad Company. If you don't know this, then you are not a true D&B fan. Each track on CD 1 is as rough and rude as anything else out there. The only thing that holds this CD
set back is disc #2. It obviously is not the tracks--Breathe (w/my girl [in my Junglist Dreams] Sage on the vocals [w/ the S.F. Phunkatech Cru--which everyone who reads this should check, along w/ Soundmurderer & SK1, all of whom are the some of the best stateside D&B producers goin']-by the way- I miss u Roxanne {also Phunkatech} since u left FTL.) and Space Walk and The Nine--which whatever WANKER mixed this only let drop for about 30 seconds--(it is one of my all time favorite tracks, period) and just about all of the others tracks
are unmatched--the problems are the mixing and more importantly the sound quality of the recording. The entire disc sounds muffled-which makes me crazy because, as I said before, these are some of my all time favorites. If you have a problem w/ the sound quality, be a man (or beautiful Jungle Bunnies, like Sage and Roxanne [fellas {and ladies who care}, these 2 are extremely gorgeous, more-so than Rap and Reid Speed, for their music & their beauty]) and seek out each of these trax on wax! The previous few sentences w/ all the ([{,'s in 'em are what you call a massive stream of consciousness tangent (or a demented train wreck of thought--whatever you want to call it) that have absolutely nothing to do w/ this review, so I apologize. Anyway, the bottom line is this is Bad Company and that really is all that needs to be said.

How Death Changed To Beauty.......2005-11-24
This is one of the greatest peices of art i have ever listened to. I love how there were able to take songs like Forest and Toxicity and make it sound like a mozart peice. I actually sang along with the instrumentals. I fand this to be a wonderful work of art and i think the string quartet shound be proud of this.
BEAUTIFUL.......2005-03-03
I think it is amazing work of art. I do have to say that it isn't as good as other string quartette tributes, but i do say the use strings instead of guitares and drums gives the music a totally different feeling to it. Maybe there would be better music or better artists to do a string quartette to, but i like it whenever they cover artists peope wouldn't normally cover like SOAD . i think you either like it or you dont. Some said on here "i pressed play and it was violens and crap." That really upsets me. If it werent for classical music would not be where it is today, so you need to respect it in some way. just like if you listen to the keyboards in Black Metal there is classical there. My good friend played me one of there songs on piano. It was just the keyboard he was playing. And it sounded like an complete Overture. My friends band are Black Metal and they are awsome
SOAD has been cheated.......2004-08-29
System of a Down is an extremely talented group. Their eerie melodies are captivating and intense. This tribute is a cop-out.
As String Quartet Tributes to great artists goes, this one isn't very strong. If you are a fan of SOAD get all of their CDs. If you need strings, listen to the Kronos Quartet.

No!! Do not buy this CD. Seriously, if one were to buy this version, they really should go buy P.O.D. or something. Buy the real version.
good cd.......2006-01-01
this cd proves once and for all that system's mediocre is better than alot of other bands' best. most of these songs could've and sholud've made the cut on any of SOAD's studio albums. good buy
SOAD RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-01-18
This is defenitly the best SOAD ( system of a down)cd since toxicity. If u like SOAD u will love this cd. What more can i say besides that it flipin rocks.
grunge-punk-metal with a political conscience.......2002-12-24
This is an energetic metal CD informed by punk and grunge. Songs criticize the system, advertising, gun laws and warmongers. There's probably an anti-pollution/pro-baby seals cut, but I missed it; nevertheless, System of a Down comes off less dogmatic and preachy than brother-politicos Rage Against the Machine. Machine gun drums, bass far forward and lots of tempo changes invite comparisons to Thinking Fellers, Tool or Slint and, as with any good metal album, there are a couple of pleasant ballads too. Very enjoyable.
System does it again.......2002-12-20
When I first became a SOAD fan, I bought Toxicity first. It was a great album so then I tried their 1998 debut release, and I was exposed to their deep inner self. Then I got this new album and I must say that System has again enthralled me. Each song may start out similar but, once things get going, they are all genuine in themselves.
Chic 'N' Stu - Weird song with a catchy chorus. What a splendid pie!! Pizza pizza pie!! I don't know what Serj is blathering about but I like it heh
Innervision - My sister was the first to tell me about this and I downloaded it. It seemed amazing when it was the only song I'd heard but, when I bought the whole CD, it was left in the dust as the melodic tunes of every other track began to catch my interest more
Bubbles - Short and sweet. This one didn't seem to get much hype but it was awesome though. It's not deep or dark. It's just fun and energetic
Boom! - Serj really managed to prevail in this song with his monotonous tone of voice in the beginning as the wild music is playing in the background. The chorus is nothing too special though
Nuguns - This is probably the song I've given the least amount of listens to even though it is quite good
A.D.D. - The three letters stand for American Dream Denial. I love the chorus to this one. It's one of my favorites
Mr. Jack - I just caught on to this song today. It's the longest track and yet it's only over four minutes
I-E-A-I-A-I-O - System seems to do good at choruses. And this one is enchanting. And we light up the skyyy...
36 - The song is called 36 but it's 46 seconds long. Cool music but the message seems to oppress television
Pictures - The music in this one rocks. And I love it when Daron jumps in at the end and repeats Serj's every phrase in a scream. Away (away!) gold dust (gold dust!)
Highway Song - I didn't pay much attention to this at first. But it's really melodic so I caught on fast
**** the System - It's alright. Nothing to put too much attention to
Ego Brain - System unleashes their soft side. The opening music sounds like the song Toxicity but everything quickly changes. The music, the flow, the message, it's all done perfectly in this track
Thetawaves - It starts out mediocre but as soon as you hear the chorus (Time feels like a midnight ride, finality waits outside, weeping in perplexity's arms, caressing our smiles inside) then you will be hooked
Roulette - Very calm, very soothing. This is not like normal System and that's what I like about it. They're trying to bring out different kinds of music
Streamline - This one was released as an extra by itself and debuted on the movie Scorpion King. I remember downloading it last summer and it's still good
