Customer Reviews:
Great to hear these songs again and sound has been protected for a reason.......2007-07-27
Gary Bonds is from my home town and I remember when he hit the radio with Quarter To Three. Back then I wondered why the quality (I was about 10) was so "grainy". Not until I read the jacket that comes with this CD did I lean that sound was produced to be unique. All Gary's songs are upbeat and lively and fun to listen to. They have a good beat, good words and I give them a 10 for being what they are. Seven Day Weekend, Twist Twist Senora, New Orleans, and Dear Lady Twist take me back to those days listening on the local AM station on a transistor radio. They are great to hear again. If you are a collector, this one should be on your shelf.
Gary U.S. Bonds.......2006-11-03
You have to hve "New Orleans" after the tragedy that occurred with Katrina.
An exiting promise.......2006-04-27
Gary "US" Bonds got a second life thanks to Bruce Springsteen. At the start of his career Springsteen revived Quarter to Three as his show stopper. Because of the more serious nature of Springsteen's own work Quarter was often one of the most delightful and exiting moments in his show. During the eighties Springsteen returned the favor by donating some songs to the Little Steven van Zandt produced comeback albums, Dedication and On the Line. This comeback spawned a series of compilations of Gary's earlier singles of which this one is the most accomplished.
Bonds is an artist who makes you wonder if a full disc of material is justified. During his career he only hit a handful of times, seldom major. Follow up singles were often in the same vein as the hit and therefore often uninteresting. Yet compiled on one disc Gary hold up just fine. There is of course a lot of filler here. Gary did too many dance craze singles that are just not to convincing these days. Fun as they are they didn't really stand up to the test of time.
The singles that do stand up save this compilation with a vengeance. Of course his biggest hits are here, such as Quarter to Three and New Orleans but some other notable material as well. I Wanta Holler (But the Town's Too Small) is one of the most exiting R&R singles written, Where Did the Naughty Little Girl Go is no small feat either. Gary's voice is one of R&B's most distinct. It is raw, emotional, passionate and filled with excitement. If his career would've been better managed Gary could have been among the top. As it is now we get an overview of a promise lost.
GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!.......2005-09-07
I have recently purchased this CD and I am in love with it. Growing up with Gary US Bonds on the radio I've always been a fan. For many many years i've been searching around for those old 45s and LPs, but no need now, this compilation has 'em all.
Some people do'nt like the muffled sound, but i think its truly unique and wonderful. Gary needs alot more recognition and the new generation needs to be told about Gary. Like Gene McDaniels, Brook Benton, Marv Johnson etc. Gary US Bonds remains one of the most greatest artists to record in the early sixties.
Its worth every last penny - so buy it!
So What Else is New?.......2004-12-16
I accepted from the start that Gary US Bonds' tunes had crappy sound quality. I never expected more, so I was not disappointed with this package of his hits (and other songs). It's all music history to me and I recommend it for that reason. But now I get to deduct a star for that crappy sound.

The Best Bonds Ever.......2005-06-01
The double-disc set of DEDICATION (1981) and ON THE LINE (1982) is the best work that Gary U.S. Bonds ever did. The songs and singing are incredibly soulful, the band is hot, and the production sure beats that on his old records. Speaking of production, both albums were written and produced by Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt, both of whom advocate sanctions against Indonesia for that country's trumped-up drug-smuggling conviction of a foreign tourist. And talk about songs! Yes, Springsteen and Van Zandt came up with several which I feel speak directly to me as to where I'm at now. The ones I refer to are "Daddy's Come Home", "Love's On The Line", and "Last Time", which, taken together, encompass the basic reasons why I've decided to place looking good for a number of pretty actresses as a higher priority than attending food-related functions at my old school, with lines like "The children have all gone away/I don't think I like what's taken their place/People's faces have changed so much/Something's missing that was there before" (from "Daddy's Come Home"), "We may grow apart, instead of closer" (from "Last Time"), and all of "Love's On The Line", which taken literally, is about a once-successful marriage that now seems like it's lost everything, but could be an allegory about the need to break away from the past and move on. Overall, these are two great albums produced (and mostly written) by two great musicians/writers/human beings.
Some of the best soul music of the past 30 years.......2004-06-09
If you aren't familiar with Gary U.S. Bonds, this disc will be one heck of surprise and a treat for anyone who is interested in artists like Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny. These were Gary's two initial comeback records after being away from the industry for a number of years. There is not a weak track on either record - and On The Line certainly ranks among the top albums of all-time. It's THAT good. "Last Time" will bring you to tears. "Out Of Work" and "This Little Girl Of Mine" were both hits - but I never hear them on the radio anymore. It's a disc that will move you and also could be the perfect soundtrack for any party. Simply put it on and let it rip. No need to create a special mix. Also, check out his Best Of CD that covers his songs from the 60's. He had two huge hits in the early years with "Quarter To Three" and "New Orleans". You've heard both of them and probably never knew who was singing the song. Well, here's your chance - don't let it pass you by.

Operatic icon. Performer against which others are measured........2007-05-26
Maria Callas may be the only female operatic 'superstar' working in my lifetime. In the 1950s and early 1960's, she had all the star power and paparrazi draw of Jackie and Marilyn, far outstripping the fame to the world at large of her primary rival, Renita Tibaldi. I am not an expert, or even an experienced amateur at evaluating operatic sopranos; however I've listened to several of the modern crop, and while the newbies probably do a better job of keeping on key, none of them can match the drama emoted by Ms. Callas on any given aria. All three releases are especially good buys, as they all run to over 72 minutes; however the recording quality does show its early (pre-multitrack, pre-digital) recording technology. Each is as good as the next regarding content, but 2 and 3 are a bit better in sound quality.
La Divina set the stage.......2007-01-05
Maria Callas, as I understand it (I'm not a music expert), helped create a new interest in the bel canto tradition of Donizetti and Bellini at mid-twentieth century. This album represents those composers, plus many others as well.
Callas' range in choice of operatic material is great indeed. Selections on this CD run from Gluck to Donizetti to Bizet and Puccini. Her voice, uneven on occasion, does not define her importance. As noted, she helped spark a renewed interest in bel canto works. The irony is that she did not have great coloratura skills. In the selection from Lucia di Lammermoor, a trill is scarcely heard. Think a few years later, to Joan Sutherland, later still to Beverly Sills, and more recently to sopranos such as Angela Gheorghiu. They all have much better technique, trill well, and exhibit much more agile coloratura singing. But Callas was an important predecessor.
More important than technique is the passion that many heard in her voice and her presence on stage. This is a good introduction to the range of Callas' repertoire and a reminder of this fiery singer from decades ago.
The queen of opera.......2004-05-16
Absolutely beautiful! Divine is the only word to do her justice! Viva La Divina, BRAVISSIMA!
Essential!.......2004-04-04
All three La Divina Albums are essential indeed! I bought them all and enjoy them! A very beautiful, dramatic voice!
The entire La Divina series is AMAZING!.......2004-02-26
I bought all three La Divina Releases and they're all splendid. Brilliant, for Callas and beyond!

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

If you want to get a party dancing, this is it. I also ordered Frat Rock with it and they are just what a party of 50 to 60 year olds need to get things rollin. Our friends are all excited to order there own. What a kick. We had the Frat Rock tapes, back a few years ago. (15 to be honest) But the tapes wore out and we could not replace them. These Frat Rock CDs are the same. We are dancin again.

Indukti - Fantastic Debut That Should Appeal To Fans Of Tool, King Crimson or Riverside.......2007-05-21
I don't really know a lot about this band. The name sounds Japanese but they hail from Poland. This is a really killer album of great instrumental and vocal material. Mariusz Duda from Riverside guests on vocals here, and fits in perfectly with the band's style. Indukti are most often compared to a mix of Tool and King Crimson. The band defiantly shows an influence by both of these bands with the complexity of Crimson mixed with the more modern sound of Tool. I would think fans of either band would enjoy this disc. S.U.S.A.R. is mostly instrumental with only two vocal tracks. Along with traditional rock instrumentation the band also incorporates violin and harp. The musicians are all top shelf and the compositions multifaceted yet melodic. Indukti are a great young band to keep an eye on and I highly recommend this release.
The future looks bright..........2007-05-16
Indukti cite Tool, Neurosis, and King Crimson as primary influences. That bit of information alone should either have you screaming bloody murder or crying tears of bliss... or it might leave you with a blank expression on your face, which is rather unlikely since you've somehow managed to find your way to this album.
I happen to love all three of the above bands, but I can't say that Indukti really sound like any of them. Certainly, there are some lines that can be drawn - the echoing, chiming, harmonically complex clean guitars give off some semblance of 80's-era King Crimson; the sinuous and rather disorienting effect where bass and guitar bounce between overlapping time signatures at the lower end of the fretboard is employed occasionally and is decidedly reminiscent of Tool (think the introductory and middle sections of Tool's "46 & 2" if you're not sure what effect I'm trying to describe); and I suppose some of the more ambient sections as well as the noisier parts could sort of be compared to something that Neurosis has done at one point or another, but even that seems like a stretch in my eyes - I don't find much of a resemblance at all between Indukti and Neurosis. Regardless, the big picture produced by Indukti on this album is much, much more than the sum of its parts.
Firstly, everything is accentuated by violin (another allusion to King Crimson, I suppose) - or almost everything. Rather than just providing flourishes here and there for mood and effect, Ewa Jablonska is a full-fledged and prominent member of the band and the music, though she does have a tendency to fade away throughout some of the heavier portions of the album. She coats the overall sound with a smooth, organic warmth and provides something of an ethnic Eastern European flavor. She also creates some striking aural dichotomies, such as in songs like "No. 11812" and "No. 11811", where dark aggression is punctuated by sublime violin interplay.
Secondly, there's a harp played by guest Anna Faber. I've never been much of a harp fan, but I mostly attribute that to lack of exposure. Hearing it in use on this album has opened my eyes, so to speak. It's simply beautiful. The sounds that emanate from those gently plucked strings momentarily take you away to some celestial, enchanted utopia. So absolutely peaceful, tranquil, and mysterious that you feel genuine regret at being rudely pulled away by the arrival of the remainder of the band. Unfortunately, these moments of blissful harping are generally found only at the beginning or the end of a given song. There is a section in the middle of the song "Uluru" which sees the harp come together with the rest of the band for a fairly stunning, if rather brief, instrumental portion... but that's the only time you'll hear the harp in any prominent role together with the band. For the most part, Anna only performs solo pieces here and there - though the transition that she makes from "Cold Inside... I" to "No. 11812" is especially magnificent, and she does mingle with the band for a bit there, as well.
Thirdly, this is mostly instrumental. There are some vocals performed by guest Mariusz Duda of Riverside - he adds some wordless, tribal-esque vocal melodies on opener "Freder", and takes on more straightforward vocal duties on "Cold Inside" and "Shade" - but the majority of the album lacks any kind of vocal presence. I can't say whether this is overly positive or negative. The instrumental tracks are definitely more impressive from a songwriting and creative point of view, as well as in terms of technicality, but the vocal performances are quite strong and come across as very moving and soulful.
The remainder of the band is solid. Twin guitars provide a thick sound, but not one that's too overbearing. The heavier distorted portions are brought forward with a very crisp production that actually kind of sucks out some of the heaviness, opting instead for a more polished presentation (still quite heavy, though). The clean portions are also incredibly crisp and rich. There isn't much in the way of solos or leads... most of the guitar work centers around layers of clean arpeggiated chords and mid-tempo riffing with focus on beautiful harmony. The bass is powerful and audible, throwing in stretches of droning pulses alongside slap techniques and occasional transitions from purely rhythmic backing to more melodic interactions. A mighty bass presence overall, and one that adds a welcome and noticeable warmth to the music. The drums are fairly technical and very active, plowing through metric changes and rhythmic permutations with ease while avoiding complete sterility and keeping things musical with flourishing cymbal work and a competent sense of synergy and dynamics. As a whole, the band does a great job of staying together as one and building off of each other as opposed to going off on wild tangents and indulging in solo spots. A very cohesive sound.
S.U.S.A.R. is a commendable album from this Polish band. At once heavy, tranquil, abrasive, warm, and mesmerizing. There are some great ideas throughout that don't get developed as much as I would have liked, but that's alright for a debut album and it leaves plenty of room for improvement on future releases. I have high hopes for Indukti's future.
A band to keep an eye on........2006-03-08
I love this band, and have a hard time prying it out of my cd player once it has found its way back into it, yet I hesitate to recommend them. While people are largely comparing them to Tool and King Crimson, it lacks the hypercomplexity both are known for and particularly Crimson's dissonance. Ultimately, Indukti sounds like neither band, the violin giving a bit of a gypsy lilt to their crunch-laden energetic sound.
The band's bio suggests that the members were all orchestral musicians at some point, and it shows in the music. The instruments build on and support each other, yet none of them make an effort to stand out from the group. This translates to little (if any) soloing on anyone's part; while good, the music isn't truly strong enough to keep most listeners' attentions, and some songs overstay their welcome with false ending after false ending. The vocal pieces (featuring Mariusz Duda on loan from Riverside) really shine; Indukti would do well to find someone of his caliber and make him or her a permanent addition to the band.
Overall, I call this a good start, but probably not good enough for the casual listener. Fans of Crimsonian and Tool will probably get a kick out of it, but I'd say there are better things still to come.
tears a hole in the universe.......2006-03-06
"INDUKTI is the induction of five minds, it is the musical conglomeration designed to stimulate the imagination and to draw forth the exceptional experiences and unique emotions."
I've had this album for awhile now, and I've always thought it was excellent. It finally hit me today how great this is. This Polish quintet sounds like Lateralus interwoven with Red (or: imagine if Tool became mostly instrumental, added David Cross on violin, and had apparently listened to some Shakti [the Eastern sound in some parts]), and the emotional journey it takes the listener on is equally as compelling and engaging as the work Tool and King Crimson have to offer. SUSAR was recorded live in the studio "to maintain as much of the concert spontaneity and energy as possible". The vocals, which as used sparingly, sound like Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, only with way more soul, not as whiny, and not as British. heh.
The rhythms are complex and stunning; the violin is celestial and soulful; the bass is overwhelming and powerful; the guitar, harmonious and beautiful (the distortion sound is EXCELLENT as well - it makes me want to break things). Their are moments of evocative, engaging beauty; those of rhythmic and soulful interplay; those of crushing power and unrivaled vigor.
This is music that hypnotizes, paralyzes, and entrances. It has an absolute power that makes gargoyles crumble, doves cry, whales sing. And it will make any mortal person curl into the foetal position and remain there for weeks, contemplating the hole that this music tears in the universe.
Sounds like Tool Meets Crimson and yet is still original.......2005-09-27
I am really enjoying this cd. I think the KC and Tool influences are obvious but I love this cd and I do not love Tool or King Crimson. Go figure! The musicianship is stellar with not much (if any) wanking. The production and sound are first rate and the songs are very strong. A little on the heavy side - which is fine with me. Many odd time arrangements which are great and not too forced. The violin is a valuable addition to this cd where the vocals are not. To be fair, I'm not a fan of the group Riverside where the vocalist is from. I'd have preferred it to be completely instrumental. Just my two cents. But, again, the violinist is really excellent and I hope the next cd has more of the same. For that matter, I hope there is another cd. This won't be the next Dream Theater. I just hope they achieve some success and keep putting out music like this. Two big thumbs up from me!

A Somewhat Disapointing CD.......2001-02-01
I purchased this CD thinking it would be more or less like the original sound track of the "Victory At Sea" TV series. It falls short in that respect. The music on this CD is of very good quality from a classical point of view but only track 10 called "Victory At Sea" which lasts 11 minutes is what I consider to be true music from the TV series and movie. The rest of the music has a nautical theme but looking at the front label makes you think you are getting all "Victory At Sea" selections. I would not purchase this CD if the sound track music is what you are looking for. If you just want good military band music with a hint of the "Victory at Sea" theme then this would probably be a good buy.
Great CD!.......2001-01-19
This is an excellent CD. The US Navy band is one of the best musical ensembles in the world, and this CD proves it! My personal favorite is the selection "Songs of Sailor and Sea". I was fortunate to have performed this piece with a highschool state honor band, and it is extremely difficult to play, both technically and musically. All of the other selections are wonderful, also. I think anyone would enjoy this CD.

very good, but not the expected NBC Orchestas version (original). Especially, Anchors aweigh was a bit of a disappointment. Arrangement could use a lot more polish - Sousa style!

Customer Reviews:
Great Album!.......2006-08-15
After seeing Earl Thomas live at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2006, It was a must to go and buy his CD's.
Earl Thomas - Intersection, is a great album, with a lot well-known covers, excellent mix of blues, soul, jazz, and gospel! Earl Thomas' voice is amazing - never seen something like this before. His live shows are extraordinary and remarkable.
A must for all modern soul lovers!
Only Al Green can do this.......2005-08-25
This guy seems to switch producers and labels too often for 4 albums sparsed on some 5 to 10 year period. Label remained from last time, but Ike Turner's intro reads like here's a surefire talent -- and Ike, its usher. Well, that sort of inaptness and the overall dull first-timer face design should deter you from buying it. I overcame the hunch and bought. I was rewarded by exquisite sound of soul music like it were another recent Al Green helping. Producer and hornists aren't known but sound every bit pro and seasoned. It's genuine true-to-pattern soul, nothing doing. The only gleech I find is in intoning phrases. Mr Thomas kinda wavers instead of keeping firm and macho, you know. Like he were zobified by a Backstreet Boy or someone of nu r'n'b.
Earl rocks!.......2005-07-24
I've been listening to and going to see Earl Thomas play since the early '90s. This is definitely one of his better albums though the others are all good too. "Workin' Together" is a really good on this album, but if you really want to experience it, go see him live!
