5 out of 5 stars Canadian new wave band still sounds great.......2006-12-18

I owned many Strange Advance LPs when I was a teenager in Canada so it was great listening to this collection of their best songs on CD. If you enjoy 80s music, especially new wave music, this is worth getting. Many Canadian bands were relatively unknown in the U.S. but did very well in Canada. I would put Strange Advance up there with any of the great British New Wave bands like OMD and Human League.

5 out of 5 stars Discovered this band through a canadian movie.......2006-08-10

I had never heard of Strange Advance until I saw a canadian movie called Blue Line and fell in love with the song We Run, great 80's music.

4 out of 5 stars Where to get "Sister Radio"--the reason people are disappointed with this disc.......2006-05-16

There is a Canadian greatest hits release by Strange Advance that has Sister Radio on it. The CD is called "Worlds Away & Back", and aside from having that song, it has a number of unreleased mixes, 4 tracks from their 1988 album, and songs recorded in the 90s. For some reason, the disc is not listed on amazon.com, but is still available on amazon.ca as of my posting this message.

4 out of 5 stars A Key Track Is Missing.......2005-10-23

To echo the sentiments of another reviewer on this page, this "Greatest Hits" compilation would only really be complete if it contained "Sister Radio" from their first album.

They got some play in the U.S. on MTV when their first album came out, especially with "She Controls Me," but their second album was, IMHO, not nearly as strong an effort. Still, this CD is worth it for the tracks from the first album alone, as the first album itself does not appear to be on CD.

3 out of 5 stars "She Controls Me" makes it worthwhile.......2005-03-25

Nothing real unique about Strange Advance, there were many similar sounding bands in the 1980s. However, the song "She Controls Me" does rate as one of the best songs of that period and pretty much makes buying this collection worthwhile. Or I suppose you could download "She Controls Me" off of a file-sharing program. A legal one of course!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Piano Music - Check It Out!!.......2001-01-02

I would say, with out a doubt this is a very good CD. It should be titled however to "The Best of Frank Mills". The one that is not my favorite is "The Traveler", and maybe the "A Classical Rock", otherwise the rest is fantastic. Just pop in the old CD, kick back, relax and listen to it. Want to have fun? Download the RealMedia Jukebox, play this cd in it - especially the song "Concerto No. 1 For Piano" and watch the "Cosmic Belt" graphic equalizer! It is cool, WAY COOL!! It gives the name Cosmic Belt something to think about!

5 out of 5 stars Frank is the dopest!.......2000-11-13

Frank Mills has been around for a long time now. "Music Box Dancer" is a household tune but i'm sure there are some people who are negligent as to who composed that song. This collection of songs that was taken from 4 of Frank's earlier albums really reflects the composer thoroughly. My personal favourites are "Music Box Dancer", "Peter Piper', "A Classical Rock" & "Concerto No.1 for Piano". Tracks like "The Traveller" with the added vocals, enhance the songs even more and give it that ecstatic feel you would expect of Frank's music. I would highly recommend this CD to a someone who hasn't discovered Frank's music and check out his more recent release "Transitions" while you're at it too. He's got a different version of "Storm Warning" on both albums. Both versions are good enough to make Frank the talented person he is already. Way to go!

5 out of 5 stars Music Box Dancer, The Poet and I.......2000-03-17

I know all the titles in this album as most of them are in an earlier album called Sunday Morning Suite. I fell in love with the title Music Box Dancer as I was learning ballet at nine years old. Another excellent in the album is The Poet and I, another great one which I am sure most people will enjoy is Peter Piper. There is a good range of moods and styles in the titles. Peter Piper is cheerful and light-hearted, and happy. The Poet and I is yearning, and soulful. Music Box Dancer tends to get rather repititive but the phrase is interesting. Almost two decades after hearing Music Box Dancer, I still love it, and I am still dancing too.

4 out of 5 stars Better this than nothing at all..........2004-02-07

Can't help but give this CD four stars, mostly because it's one of the rare CD offerings from Canadian songbird Luba available on the market ! You get most of the hits and some important album tracks, but it's a pretty incomplete compilation; for instance, it features no songs from her brilliant (and underrated) third full-length studio album "All or nothing". And you get an extended club mix of "Let it go" instead of the warm original calypso number. Ditto for "Storm before the calm", Luba's best song : what you get here is the cleaned-up, slightly disco mix of the single version (instead of the gorgeous, powerful and eloquent original version).

I wish Capitol-EMI would just release her original studio albums (namely the brilliant "Secrets and sins") instead of serving this half-baked compilation... but hey, it's still better than nothing at all.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest hits from one of Canada's elite female vocalists........1999-02-03

The greatest hits of Montreal-born singer/songwriter Luba are featured on "Over 60 Minutes With..." Winner of numerous Canadian music awards including three consecutive Juno's for Female Vocalist of the Year, she has impressed and delighted fans with the clarity of her voice and appealing delivery. This collection showcases her versatility and great stylistic variety, from the solid no-frills rock ballad "Everytime I See Your Picture," to the lush production of "Act Of Mercy." Also included are two songs that may be familiar outside Canada -- her cover of "When A Man Loves A Woman" used by pairs figure skaters Underhill & Martini, and "The Best Is Yet To Come" from the film soundtrack "9 1/2 Weeks." Luba's rare combination of a rich, powerful voice tempered and enhanced with remarkable control and sensitivity place her among the elite of female rock/pop vocalists. Useful comparisons are difficult with such a unique talent, but if you like Heart or Berlin, you owe it to yourself to try Luba.

4 out of 5 stars The second best compilation.......2004-06-25

This is a nicely thought out single disc set that was amazingly hard to track down as few as five years ago. Now it seems I see it everywhere. As budget Red Rider hits cd's go, this one is far better than the other single disc set because of it's length and song selection. This is the one to buy if you are only interested in a single disc, but the double disc set is the real way to go. (And the Ashes To Diamonds box set is better still!)
Another great Tom Cochrane/Red Rider cd is The Symphony Sessions, which I can't seem to find anywhere any more. Tom and the boys backed by a symphony add a whole new dimension to the music. Highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars Canadian Rockers.......2004-04-07

This prolific rock band from the Great White North was never really recognized in the States for anything more than the hit "Lunatic Fringe". A great song, to say the least, but Red Rider was so much more than this one song. This compilation covers the first five years of the 80s from four albums. The creative pen work of Tom Cochrane gave the band its material as Ken Greer gave it weight with his slide guitar sound. These two would remain the mainstay of the band throughout their career together.

These songs are great anthems of the 80s, and there are few that appear here that are not worthwhile, but most may be unknown to the American population. If nothing else, Cochrane's poetic ability is the lifeblood of these songs. "Napoleon Sheds His Skin" is a perfect example where his words paint a picture of a story just as colorful as the music. The quiet "Avenue A" rings with solo arpeggio guitar and Cochrane's soulful voice introducing the song before the rest of the band comes in. Again, a song that is a story. Other great cuts are "White Hot", "Cowboys in Hong Kong" and "Power".

Any fan of 80s mainstream music will like Red Rider. It was unfortunate that they could not break through the boarders and receive some more airplay in America, but they did leave their mark upon the music world. A great band well worth the listen.

      5 out of 5 stars Superb Collection.......2002-06-21

This is another one of those bands who due to poor promotion did not crack the US Market to the extent their material deserved. Many of the songs on this album should be "Classics", and to those of us who have followed this band for years, are.

I would highly recommend this CD to anyone, whether familiar with the band or not. You will be impressed with the music and lyrics, and probably disappointed you had not listened earlier.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music From The 80's.......2001-07-10

I was in Toronto Canada for Canada Day on July 1st and got to see Red Rider perform several songs live from this CD and they were GREAT ! Being from the USA I had never heard them before, but they put on the best show. Ken Greer's guitar playing was awesome and Tom Cochran has a great sound as the lead vocals. This CD is well worth the 5 stars I gave it. I bought it, listened to it, and recommend it all the way.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome 80's Sound.......2000-01-23

I bought this CD for the song "White Hot" and found that the entire album is great. Best known in the States for "Lunatic Fringe", Red Rider and Tom Cochrane capture the best of the Big 80's with this collection of up-tempo rock songs and well thought out lyrics with this impressive number of songs from 1980-1984. Other highlights include "Power", "Can't Turn Back", "Napoleon..",and "Crack The Sky". You may also see the album listed as "Over 60 Minutes with...Red Rider".
