Metal To Listen To While Driving!.......2006-02-20
Before reading about this album in a review on an Amazon link, I had never heard of Rob Rock, though I had heard of the list of musos he's sung with. After listening to it, I can safely say it's better than what I expected. I'm more into the progressive, neo-classical melodic death metal/hardcore scene, but as far as power metal goes, this really does kick! Slayer of Souls, Calling Angels, Holy Hell and Lion Of Judah would have to be the stand out tracks on this album, but most of the songs crunch and the guitarists shred like there's no tomorrow!
The chord progression on "Calling Angels" is unbelievable (not to mention the solo!) and the solo work on "Lion of Judah" nothing short of phenomenal!
The cover artwork is awesome, the songs well written, and the singing sublime, all which reminds me of some of Bloodgood's early stuff (don't ask me how!), especially the Detonation album, Europe, Judas Priest, with Malmsteen moments, and Iron Maiden, though more technical and heavier.
The ballad "I'll Be Waiting For You", I agree, sounds a little tacked on, but still showcases some good musicianship and vocal crooning, and, considering it was written for his late father, I would expect it to be a little sentimental. The sound is very naughty nineties meets early Malmsteen, Queensryche and Iron Maiden with new mesa boogie amps, aggressive, crunching riffs and rapid solos. The precision drumming of Jarzombek is also a major highlight. Overall, a surprise buy well worth the money. Best listened to in the car on long trips with favourite songs on repeat.
Awesome new album from Rob Rock..........2006-01-31
This time around rob Rock was backed up by musicians from the Danish band Narnia. The vocals are great while the musicianship is incredible. The thematic of the lyrics is mostly Christian, which might cause some to turn away from this album. Do not do it! It is one of the best albums of 2005.
This Thing Seriously Rocks.......2005-12-04
For those who wanted to see Rob Rock return to the heavier sound of his first album, Rage of Creation, and felt let down with the overly orchestral sound of Eyes of Eternity, Holy Hell is for you. Has there been a better song for getting the blood moving than Slayer Of Souls this year? The drummer and guitar player set the standard for quality power metal playing and Rock's vocals are better than ever. Impelliteri fans who were dissapointed with "Pedal To The Metal" will not be dissapointed with Holy Hell. While I still would have to give the nod to "Rage Of Creation" as my favorite Rob Rock album, definitely get this album if you like fast, hard, melodic power metal. Complaints that this album is "too Christian" is a moot point not to be taken seriously. The bottom line with any metal record is whether or not the artist can deliver the goods musically ( and besides, since when does anyone buy metal record for the lyrics?).
Epic and powerful.......2005-11-07
Rob Rock is one of the finest hard'n heavy vocalists hailing from America and everything in his discography is awesome and highly respected among heavy metal fans. From Impellitteri to MARS to his works with Axel Rudi Pell, Avantasia and Jack Frost, he has proven to be a singer very much in demand. However, it is his solo albums that allow him to showcase his talentes best, as he always works with the amazing producer Roy Z (Bruce Dickinson, Judas Priest) who never fails to bring out the best in Rob Rock and also gives the album an excellent sonic quality.
I'll always argue that Rage of Creation is Rock's best album. Maybe it's because Rage of Creation was his first album that truly differed from his neoclassical shred stuff with Impellitteri or the brief inclusion of Jake E. Lee on a couple of tracks, but I've always felt that once Rob Rock was convinced that he was on the right path, he didn't consider it necessary to experiment with different writing styles anymore. Nothing wrong with that, but in general lines, Holy Hell sounds like a more updated version of Rock's previous two discs, with impressive musicianship and solid production. Narnia members Andreas Olsson on bass and Carljohan Grimmark on lead guitar, along with extra guitar work by Roy Z, Rick Renstrom, and Bob Rossi form Rock's solid lineup. The big surprise of Holy Hell, however, is drummer Bobby Jarzombek (Watchtower, Spastic Ink, Iced Earth). I love Jarzombek's drumming in more traditional heavy metal bands such as Halford and Riot because he has a very unconventional approach to rhythm and his double bass drum work is simply awesome. His drumming in the outro of the opening song "Slayer of Souls" is fantastic and only becomes more engaging when Rob Rock adds his husky scream over it. This song is a perfect way to start a Rob Rock album with lots of heavy guitar riffs, pounding drums, and exquisite guitar leads. Jarzombek's drumming also stands out on the following track "First Winds of the End of Time" where he employs a maniacal polyrhythm complexity without taking away from the otherwise epic chunks of power metal riffs. The bass on this piece holds everything together and another killer twin guitar solo with a melodic staple concludes the track.
Perhaps due to Rock's affinity to European power metal projects such as Avantasia, there are a few tracks that reek of double bass drum madness with highly melodic choruses that are repeated over and over again till there's no way you can escape them. It's all kept within a certain level of heavy guitar work though, and that saves them from being totally derivative pieces. The title track is filled with heavy guitar and bass but it denies its Maiden and Priest roots with an infectious main chorus. Likewise, "When Darkness Reigns" is also Euro power metalish with an epic intro, sick drumming once again, and distant keyboards used to generate atmosphere. On "I'm A Warrior", Rock's singing reminds of Hammerfall, something I can't attribute to a singer of his calibre, but it's an okay song otherwise. My favourite piece would have to be the dark "Lion of Judah", punctuated by Roy Z's sweeping arrangements and precise guitar work, and Rock actually sings in a lower tone which really suits the album. Sadly, both ballads on this album fall short off the mark, as "I'll Be Waiting for You" (there is also a video of it on the CD) is way too sappy sounding. Not only does this song break the metalic flow of the album, but it also feels like it was put together rather quickly in hopes of adding a power ballad in the mix. The last piece "Move On" features Tobias Sammet singing both lead and back vocals in a somewhat folky tone over acoustic guitars and power chords. Knowing Rob Rock's earlier ballads, I know he could have done better, but Holy Hell is still a good heavy metal album with plenty of power metal elements and it will please most listeners.

This album OWNS. I RECOMMEND IT!.......2006-05-27
Believe me, there's not a thing wrong with this one. I got it a year ago and I crank up the car stereo volume to hear the great tunes on here. I like them all but my favorites are "Beautiful As Fire" and "The Red Ripper". I like to play it on a stormy day, too. There's something about this album that goes really well with severe thunderstorms. I rate it 5 Stars.
Wow...........2004-02-05
This album blew me away from the first track to the last. It had ripping melodies with a wall of sound assualt drums to combine for a maelstrom of metal fury. I recomend you pick up this album immetietly if you are a fan of death metal. Oh yeah...for the previous reviewer... how can you call raise hell a sellout when you are reviewing their debut album?
RAISE HELL'S DISAPPOINTING DEBUT 2.5/5 RATING.......2003-04-27
Raise Hell is not a bad band at all, they just seem to get boring fast. I bought this CD and had it for 2 weeks without playing it so much I got tired of it,but everytime I put the CD in the song (Black Visions) track 7 I think,is the only song that really had any substance to me. The other songs get boring and repetitive if you want good Death Metal from Sweden check(ARCH ENEMY,IN FLAMES/WHORACLE,OR DISSECTION WHICH IS WHO RAISE HELL TRIES TO CLONE.ALSO BY ALL MEANS AVOID THERE OTHER TWOS RELEASES(NOT DEAD YET,WICKED IS MY GAME) LIKE THE PLAGUE,RAISE HELL MAY BE THE SECOND BIGGEST SELL OUT SINCE METALLICA,JUST LISTEN TO NOT DEAD YET,IT SOUNDS LIKE MEGADETH OR MANOWAR,GIVE ME A BREAK!
They know what they do...Beware!!!.......2001-03-10
This CD rules!!Black-death metal very well done. They are not original or innovative, but they sound amazing, better than any other black metal band. Their label Nuclear Blast considers Raise Hell the "new Dissection". I'd agree, but I have no words to describe what they did in the last album so, don't waste your time or money.
Anyway, as I said before, this CD rules!!!!
Awesome Melodic Black Metal.......2000-06-19
This CD rules~! They were totally influenced by Dissection, so if you like Dissection, you should get or copy...!

Blazing Metal!!!!.......2006-05-13
I have heard about Rob Rock for a while. He does some vocal work on the Avantasia releases by Edguy frontman Tobias Sammet. But, I kept sleeping on the artist because for some reason to me "Rob Rock" sounded like it would be more cheesey than I would normally stand to listen to. Dear friends was I wrong. This album rocks (no pun intended) so hard at times it is ridiculous! I mean on most power metal or albums of the like you usually are led in by some enchanting keyboard intro of sorts, but not here. They just lash out and smash your eardrums from second 1. That being said, there are a few more balladish songs mixed in. Let me just run down the songs for you :
1. Slayer Of Souls : like I said previously, this track just scorches from start to finish. (kind of Iced Earth sounding guitar work) In my opinion this song steals the show.
2.First Winds Of The End Of Time : starts off kind of nu metal sounding, but quickly goes into more thrash gallop metal glory. Also most tracks are of a Christian theme.
3. Calling Angels : Kind of reminds me of the Band Hammerfall. Constant churning riffs, almost 80's sounding.
4.Holy Hell : another uptempo scorcher. Big vocals throughout.
5. Lion Of Judah : Obvious biblical references here. Nice little rocker here but not as hard as other tracks on the album.
6. I'm A Warrior : 80's Dokken sounding track. To be expected with different guitarists on different songs. Still a rocking little tune.
7. When Darkness Reigns : although not listed as such, this is a bonus track only available on imports of this album. The US version only has 9 tracks and this is not one of them. Anyway, the song has a nice churning Iced Earthish riff going on and more impressive vocal performances (Rob Rock has a very nice 80's sounding vocal range , just with more ballsy music.)
8. The Revelation : probably the most chrous happy with big choirs and the power metal works. Nice track.
9. Move On : ahh yes, the duet with Tobias Sammet. Nice. Altough the music is laid back, the vocal exchanges between Rob and Tobias are very nice on my power metal ears. Could be considered a gospel song with elecrtic guitars. Maybe not. Interesting to say the least.
10. Ride The wind : First offically listed bonus track. Lots of rocking to be had here. Definitely a bonus track to be had.
11. Lost In A World : Bonus track # 2. This is an outtake from the "Rage Of Creation" recording sessions. You can tell it wasn't recorded for this album. It rocks but the feel is very different from the rest of the album.
12. I'll Be Waiting For You : On the US release this track is in the place of "Where Darkness Reigns". The softest song on the album but that is to be expected since it it a song about his fathers passing.
13 & 14. Alternate mixes of I'm a Warrior & First Winds Of The End Of Time : I prefer the regular album mixes to these, especially FWOTEOT.
So overall, this is a pretty strong album. And any album with a guest vocal spot by Tobias Sammet is cool with me. The Alternate mixes could be done without, but the tracks "When Darkness Reigns", "Ride The Wind" & "Lost in a World" should not be gone without. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money for this Korean import. Keep in mind you are getting 5 extra songs not present on the US version. Also, I'm certain this is the same version you get with the Japanese import (as far as song list).
This is high class metal. Holy Hell is right!
