Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Vain Glory Opera.......2007-02-07

This is an early EdGuy CD - it has alot of good songs (as I would expect from anything EdGuy does) but I think many are not quite the same caliber as their later work. I still enjoy listening to it, the title track absolutely ROCKS, but it may require listening more times through to fully appreciate it than some of their other stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Plenty to enjoy on this albeit early Edguy effort........2006-09-01

After my 1st few listens to this CD (Edguy's 2nd full length album), I was inclined to chalk it up as another developmental step for Edguy. A big step forward from their debut mind you, with some good moments, but still too far away from what they would become to strongly recommend to fans of their more recent work. And frankly I couldn't quite fathom what some other fans and reviewers (some of whose reviews are on this page!) were hearing that I wasn't, praising this CD with comments like "greatest power metal CD ever," etc. (And I guess my final rating says I still don't, but trust me this is a very enthusiastic 3 out of 5). In particular I was puzzled by folks who feel Vain Glory Opera is better than Theater of Salvation (the follow-up to this one), given that TOS is almost universally regarded as the milestone that launched Edguy into the metal stratosphere. Well, I'm here to say that I think I get it now.

There are just some terrific songs here that have grown on me pretty quickly after repeated listens, even a couple that could hold their own among Edguy's best. The one element that sets this CD apart---in particular from its follow-up (Theater)---is the noticeably heavier sound, crunchier guitars, and overall more urgent, in-your-face delivery. Another thing I like is that the guitar solos here are no less melodic, yet display a little more flash and aggression than on some other Edguy albums (and I say this not counting Timo Tolkki's guest solos). In contrast, Theater of Salvation (for those who have heard it and haven't heard this) has a little more of a measured and restrained, almost perfectionist vibe to it, and I think that is a big part of what those who prefer Vain Glory Opera are tuned into---VGO is just more loose and balls-to-the-wall. A fine example of this is track 10, "No More Foolin'." It's easily one of Edguy's heaviest songs, the intro literally jumps out of the speakers, and it features an outright thrash metal breakdown at a little past the 3:30 mark that totally smokes and is not your everyday Edguy.

Another bonus here is Hansi Kursch's (of Blind Guardian) potent yet all too brief guest vocals on "Out of Control" and the title track, which incidentally are 2 of the album's best songs. The refrain Hansi delivers on "Out of Control" really adds an emotional punch each time the chorus comes around. Speaking of vocals, compared to other albums Tobias Sammett's delivery sounds a little different on this one. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it seems maybe he sings more consistently in a middle register here compared to other albums, and has a more "operatic" delivery? Not sure that's the right word, but I definitely hear something a little different, and I wonder if Hansi's style and presence here perhaps subconsciously rubbed off a bit in Tobi's performance? Anyhow, that's just my idle speculation. Nevertheless, Tobi sounds as great as ever and his delivery fits the material perfectly.

So, when push comes to shove, I guess I would still have to say that I think the compositions, arrangements, and overall production---while less heavy---are a bit more mature, tight and polished on Theater of Salvation, but I definitely understand why many prefer Vain Glory Opera. For me there are also just a couple of miniscule moments of unintentional cheese on VGO---a too kitschy keyboard part here, a slightly awkward vocal bit there---that keep me from rating this 4 or higher. They are only momentary distractions, but they are exactly the kinds of things you don't hear on Edguy's later work.

Bottom line: if you've heard everything from Theater of Salvation onward (or likely only Mandrake onward if you're from the USA) and you want MORE EDGUY, but you're worried this early career effort might disappoint you . . . do not be afraid! Get this! You'll notice some differences and it may take a few listens, but it's got some truly great songs and contains everything you already love about Edguy.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best metal albums I ever bought..........2004-08-16

...definitely is Edguy's Vain Glory Opera. Power Metal from the beginning to the end - awesome. Tobias Sammets voice is stunning, bringing up the variety from ballads to fast and heavy tracks.

A MUST!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing stuff. Blows away mainstream crap........2004-05-20

If you look up the word "talent" in the dictionary, you will see a picture of this band right next to it. This album is as perfect as a metal record can be. Not a single mediocre track, nothing to be skipped, you can play this one over and over again, soon finding yourself to sing along to most songs.
Edguy is AWESOME. This album is AWESOME as well. Want symphonic-style choruses? Want hard riffs? Want great creative drumming? Want amazing guitar solos? This one's got it all.
Some people say "Theater of Salvation" is better than this album, but I strongly disagree. "Vain Glory Opera" is perfection at its most perfect.

5 out of 5 stars 1 of the best Power Metal cds of all time!!!.......2004-03-16

This one is right up there with Helloween's Keeper of vthe 7 keys ptII. Not a bad song on the entire album, one listen will blow you away!! Well worth the import price if you can't find it used.

          5 out of 5 stars Where is Bucetao? Where is Copenhagen?.......2004-02-03

          This is undoubtful one of Metal's best 10 albums ever written and it reminded me, beside the many comparisions mentioned by my fellow Edguy fans, also of Virgin Steel's "Noble Savage" and Angra's early works.
          This is THE PERFECT METAL ALBUM. And, please forgive me, you are accusing the influence of previously written metal music and already well known singing technique. Where on Earth will you find something original these days? Or don't you know what David Bowie once said on John's funeral: "John often used to say that before Elvis there was nothing, well I am saying now on this rainy morning that after John's gone, all our muses will vanish and leave for a new heaven....". So be satisfied with God's blessing: the perfect metal music. Not ever, not from Germany, not of the decade. Just ..perfect music with soul.
          Metal rules. No. True music rules, no matter if metal or else.
          Stay safe!

          3 out of 5 stars Wait a minute !.......2002-07-17

          Many of the reviews below are OK -but ( and I have been helped
          quite a lot from other people when buying CD:s - and when You're
          spending 40-50 bucks a month - that's not unimportant )
          I really would like to balance the obvious hype around this album.
          Yes - it is very good, intense and wellproduced - but it
          is NOWHERE near the later album Theather of Salvation
          And the guy below who compares Sammet/Edguy to
          Gamma Ray/Kai Hansen has to be a real joker !!!
          Sammet can write good songs , but they are all very
          similar. Hansen on the other hand is probably Europes
          premiere metal-song writer alltogether , just compare
          his works on the Keepers-album back in the Helloween-days
          to the Gamma Ray albums " Somewhere out in Space " and
          " No World Order " - there is no way in this universe that
          Sammet can take on those masterpieces !!!
          And to compare Blind Guardian to Edguy is also
          " whacked " ; B.G is much more " rawer " than
          Edguy and they have one of power metals best singers
          ( I fully agree with " Overture al " above - if they
          had kicked Sammet of this record and made Kürsch
          the lead singer - there is no limit to how good it could have been )
          Still , it is a nice CD from a great power metal band -
          but be sure not to choose this over it's successor
          " Theatre of Salvation " if you're forced to choose.......
          Good luck !

          4 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2002-07-04

          This is the kind of album that none of the tracks are filler material, nor will make you bored. The real gem in EDGUY is the singer. He sounds as a mix of Dickinson, Kiske, Halford and Tate. Amazing!

          4 out of 5 stars THE FORMULA TO MAKE A POWER METAL ALBUM:.......2002-03-15

          The formula to produce an European power metal record reads more or less like this:

          1) A screaming singer who tries hard to copy one of the following singers: Geoff Tate, Bruce Dickinson or Michael Kiske;
          2) An introduction with some kind of operatic performance played by keyboards or by an orchestra;
          3) The double kick-drums present in most part of the songs;
          4) Lyrics dealing only about glory, battle, honour, courage, etc;
          5) Two or three cheesy ballads that seem like an impoverished kind of Bon Jovi.

          So, that is it. You have a melodic power metal record in your hands.

          Edguy's VAIN GLORY OPERA adds absolutely nothing new to the genre, but that does not mean it is a bad record. Much on the contrary, it's pleasant to listen e very well played. The singer is very good.

          The trouble is that the hundreds of bands playing this style is saturating the market completely.

          2 out of 5 stars I give up...........2002-02-17

          When I learned that the vocalist of Blind Guardian (Hansi Kursch) appeared in this album, I lost all hope of it being any good.... The guy is one of the worst European power-metal singers ever!!
