Rock and Roll Killing Machine
Rock and Roll Killing Machine
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
If music could kill, there would be a five-day waiting period to purchase Drowningman's Rock And Roll Killing Machine.
Their second and definitive full length, Rock And Roll Killing Machine finds Drowningman at the height of their powers combining complexity and diversity with engaging songwriting. Technical math-based beatings give way to swelling, emotional, driving rock segues all pinned down with some of the most bizarre and disturbing lyrical themes found on a modern hardcore record.
A collection of nine anthems to sharpen knives to, given names that make sense only to singer Simon Brody and his court appointed psychologist, Rock And Roll Killing Machine more than lives up to it's title. Although Brody's angelic-to-demonic vocal shifts, Javin Leonard and Matt Roy's dual guitar mind-fucks, and the dexterous displays by the rhythm section of Joe Villemaire and David Barnett, clearly evidence new levels of technical musicianship for Drowningman- it's the brute fury and apparent emotion of their delivery that finds this band at a new level.
Recorded by indie producer extraordinaire, Brian McTernan, the pre-production of this record was plagued with technical difficulties. The fatalities: two analog tape machines, one fifteen passenger van, and the fragile psyches of five already unstable band members. Combine these elements in excruciating, early summer D.C. heat, fix everything and set five guys who have given up on personal hygiene and attack anything that makes sudden movements loose in the studio and you might get something that sounds a lot like Rock And Roll Killing Machine.
If Drowningman IS The Rock And Roll Killing Machine, many have already been crushed in the tracks of the juggernaut since their spring tour with the Dillinger Escape Plan and subsequent missions of debauchery and sonic punishments throughout the Northeast and Canada this summer. Renowned for a live show that fills the air thick with saliva, blood and generally unkind words, Drowningman promise to bring it to a stage near you across the US this fall. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Rock And Roll Killing Machine and there is no off switch.

Guess whos back?.......2004-07-03
I just found out that Drowningman got back together! I am very excited indeed, it shall be great to maybe have a chance to go see them. Anyways this album is killer indeed, the songs rip and they seem to cease ripping. Though Busy Signal... was better (I just had to point that out because that album is very good), this is great. I love how they mix aggressiveness with more subdued slowed down singing (but not in a wuss way, more of a cool way). There is much variety in the sounds of all of these songs, yet it is so cohesive that there is really no confusion of how or who these guys are trying to sound like. Highly recommended.
Killer, indeed.......2004-01-01
In an age when the music world is beset by legions of lame nu-metal bands pretending to be heavy and angry, Drowningman are the real thing. Oh, and they have lots of talent too, an area in which nu-metal bands are notoriously deficient. "Rock and Roll Killing Machine" is a harsh, abrasive juggernaut of an album, filled with the fits of rage and zany rhythms that are the hallmark of the noisecore genre. With noisy guitars veering in a new direction every five seconds or so and drumming that follows no discernible pattern, Drowningman churn out one unsettling and unpredictable song after another on this compact, efficient album. Leading the charge is madman vocalist Simon Brody, who can make your ears bleed with the expected throat-ripping screams and even throw a curveball with some occasional clean vocals, enabling the band to explore a greater musical and emotional range than the typical noise outfit. The title track and "Code Breaking Hearts" are classics of the highest order, starting out with unbridled speed and aggression before adroitly mixing in some melodic passages until you give up trying to figure out what's coming and just enjoy the ride. Other songs aren't quite as good, but this album always provides an interesting listen. Highly recommended.
great song titles, slightly less great album. 3.5.......2003-07-14
I'm really torn with how I feel about drowningman. I know they're capable of making some realy good songs. when peope become numbers is evidence enough of that, with it's chaotic structure, almost bordering on mathcore from time to time, and some nice screaming. Sometimes, however, it seems like drowningman is trying to make their songs all sound alike.
The vocals use the trick of screaming, complimented by clean, melodic vocals. it's an old trick. the problem here is there isn't much veriety in the clean vocals. it's a sort of eery croon, sounding half spoken at times, often giving one the impression that they've heard that tune before. and then you realise you have. on the last track. I'm sure many people will disagree with this, but just listen to the way he ends every sentance. it's a certain emphasis he puts on the last word every time, and it drives me crazy. the songs could be more diverse, more interesting, better. at least for me.
This is a small issue, but some of the track titles are truly genius. most notably tracks 2 and 8. the lyrics, I found to be dissapointing,I'm afraid. though wonderfully angry, they are often too emo for my tastes, and sometimes too cliche. this is just opinion though.
many people will love this album, and many people should. I'm just not one of them.
How to describe it...I can't.......2002-02-18
Whoa. This is one of the best CDs I've ever bought. It sounds like the band just got together, jammed, and recorded the whole thing. None of the songs on this CD follow any sort of "structure". Neither of the guitars ever play exactly the same thing at exactly the same time except on 2 or 3 rare occasions. And it sounds incredible. At first listen, I was pretty impressed. At second listen, while just listening to the guitars, I was blown away (mind you, this is coming from a musician). All the members of this band have an incredible amount of musical talent. The liner notes are very simple. Plain black and white lyrics for each song, a picture of each band member, and some thanks at the end. The only thing I didn't like about this CD was the recording. It sounds like they just recorded demos and didn't master them or clean them up. But it still sounds fine, although it didn bug me my first time through the CD. You'll get used to it though, and it will sound fine on your 2nd listen through. Buy the CD now. And listen to how angry and violent 5 musical men can be.
Give it another listen.......2001-08-07
This without a doubt drowningman's hardest and loudest album to date. The only problem with the whole record is the fact that the recording is rather bad (apparently the record wastn't mastered). if you can settle for poor (it's not that bad, just compared to the recording of how they light..., and still loves you), then you should buy one of the best drowningman releases.
