I agree with cotton hell.......2005-09-29
suicide notes is definately a heavier sounding album. the curse may be good and all but alex sounds a lot better on suicide notes. i like the string quartet, because it reminds me of when metallica did thier old songs from ride the lightning and such and let the symphony be in the background. i think its flipping sweet.
a steaming pile of crap > Cotton's so called review.......2005-09-01
First off, I'm not a kid. I just don't want to sign up to put my opinion on here.
Cotton, wtf does a string quartet TRIBUTE album have to do with getting radio play? I'd seriously like to know. The Curse only did one thing for this band. It made them even better. The Curse is better than Suicide Notes mainly for 3 reasons...
1. The production is much better and...
2. Alex's screaming is also incredibly improved(seriously listen to some songs of of SN and then The Curse, and you tell me which sounds better)
3. Brandon's melodic vocals are used more often. I know a lot of you "hardcore" kids will disagree, but music that is nothing but constant screaming in your ear is annoying. I think Atreyu does a much better job of switching between the screams and singing.
Now, I'm not saying that Suicide Notes is bad. I just think that The Curse is an improvement. I also like how you say that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. Well, I'm not going to say anyone who disagrees with me is wrong. They just have a different opinion. Anyway, I'm not really into instrumental albums that much....but I'll give it a 5 because of the band that is being revered.
True fans will adore this materpiece........2005-04-05
First off, don't read Cotton Hell's review. If you lust atreyu's music (or if you are just a music lover in general) you will enjoy this album. These are all songs that were originally written and composed by atreyu! Yes, this is a tribute album. It is also an instrumental album. Personally I don't care if you like it or not. I just couldn't stand seeing just one review by an obvious simple-minded individual. Give it a listen and decide for yourself. That's why amazon.com gives you the listening options!

The best Skinny Puppy album.......2002-05-25
I said it, and I mean it. This is their best. Even though there aren't any new songs on here, the way that it is put together... with all the songs flowing beautifully into eachother, makes this CD a better experience than any other Puppy album. If you like Skinny Puppy I would hope that this CD is in your collection, or at the top of your shopping list.
electric chair..............electric chair..................2000-01-10
This is the first Puppy Cd I ever heard, and this is what got me addicted to them. After this Cd, I went out and bought all the Puppy Cds. Every song on here is great, even all the Brap. If you ever get a chance to buy the actual video recording of this perfomance, buy it, its insane. You thought Manson was crazy on stage, think again, Ogre is the greatest.
Essential Puppy.......1999-11-05
i think this album should be one of the first ones that someone gets after too dark park. it is an amazing cd capturing puppy live, in a truly emotional and gripping and heavy form. assimliate is amazing.. this song is my favorite of all time, with its beautiful synth work at the chorus and its ominous bass during the verse. ogre's distorted vocals are highly effective and infectious... and the samples and keyboards done through the middle of the song when ogre is taking a break, sound simply chilling and it really grabs hold of your soul. the rest of the songs are likley all more intense and in some cases better versions than the orginal songs like addiction and first aid, anger... this cd is my favorite of all time, and has many of puppy's excellent songs on it. cant go wrong.. BUT make sure u get the version which on the tracklisting lists "one time one place" instead of the one that lists "god's gift maggot" or else you'll be getting a cd that is all one ONE track instead of seperate tracks.
Top Ten Reasons Why This is a Great CD.......1999-06-10
Top ten reasons why this is one of my favorite Skinny Puppy CD's. 10) It's sort of a greatest hits collection from the peak of their touring career. 9) It's unique in the fact that a band who relies on studio tricks has pulled off a really great live album. 8) cEvin Key's keyboard performance is more melodic and personal. 7) Assimilate lost it's out of place dance feel. 6) A great live performance of Addiction nearly equal to the original which is saying a lot because the original is a technological masterpiece. 5) Cool improvisation by Goettel. 4) Ogre's voice is mixed down. 3) Chainsaw and First Aid sound better than studio versions. 2) Great synth programming. And the number one reason why this is one of my favorites... It's fun to listen to and I bet the band had fun performing it. One final note, the CD I bought from Amazon.com had separate tracking for each song verses one big track.
An excellent recording of early Skinny Puppy.......1999-05-11
This is one of my favorite Skinny Puppy Cds. Hearing Skinny Puppy live really brings out the vitality of their music. "The Choke", "Addiction", and "Deep Down Trauma Hounds" are all particularly good on this album. Overall excellent, and very hard to stop listening to.

Some Goth Goodness Remains . . ........2006-03-08
If you are a ardent fan of Queens of the Stone Age (as I am), you should give this a serious listen and suspend disbelief when you do. QOTSA's music lends itself well to strings arrangements because of the harmonizing that (I think) is one of the most interesting aspects of the band's music. It's heavy, gothic, and really subtly textured even with the driving guitar. I think that Homme's and Lanegan's vocals (sometimes) have a certain sweetness that contrasts with the music that strings evoke as an instrument - in a sense.
While some of the covers on this album are lackluster, most of them retain the same dark sound as the originals - particularly 'Mosquito Song' (which had strings in it to begin with) and 'The Sky is Falling'. The latter is, in my opinion, the best on the entire album. It's so incredibly lush and vacant at the same time. i'm not incredibly wild about the "atmospheric" guitar stylings on some of these tracks, and unlike other cover albums, some follow the original arrangements too closely. Still, I like albums that are edgy, and I think that some of this works. Buy it, if only to listen and love a couple of tracks and pass it along.
Not that bad.........2004-05-14
Being a fan that "needs it all" I just had to check it out. Its not going to make you stand up and scream AAAAAWW YEAH but its well done and the music lends itself to this interpitation. Check out the studio stuff first, but chances are that if you are looking here its because you want it all. Not terrible..but a good listen.

Customer Reviews:
Sub-par to Freshman effort..........2004-10-12
I've been a big fan of these guys, for a long time. Their first effort, "Lettin' Loose", is much more listenable. This has good harmonies, but much too much screaming, though. This is a good effort, over all, if you're interested in '80s melodic rock.
An all-time classic....FINALLY back on CD!.......2004-03-09
For everyone who has grown tired of seeing this cd selling for $100.00 or more on E-Bay, here it is....and better than ever!
This hasn't been available on CD in almost 15 years, and now it's been re-release with 2 (pretty decent) bonus tracks.
If you're a fan of melodic rock, or of this band...have any of their other albums, or just want to replace your old LP or cassette of this title...GET IT NOW!..before it's out of print again.

amazing.......2004-07-20
First off it's worth noting that the formentioned single track version of the album (everything on one track rather than ?11? seperate tracks hasn't been available since about 98. If you buy this you will almost certainly be getting a cd with each song having it's own track.
Not only vastly superioir to the doomsday live cd released years later, but one of the bands best albums period. This disc features most of the bands truly mentionable tracks up through the point of it's release. Instead of the dancy clubish versions written mostly before goettel came on board these are filled with spectacular random skitterings of noise in strange places. Not just brappage between the songs, but all through them! Everything a puppy fan would expect.
It's impossable to say how much tape loop was used here, but there are enough differences between these and the album versions to be sure key and goettel both had their hands full.
This is one of the best three or four skinny puppy albums ever released imho. if you're curious, do your self a favor and pick it up.
Vintage Live Skinny Performance.......2001-07-26
Actually the soundtrack from the concert video release by the same name, it does this band justice when you take into account that Skinny Puppy's sound relies so heavily on studio wizardy. Granted, a great deal of the musical content is canned, the live elements, like precussion and guitars add nicely to the original songs, "Dig It" especially sounds great with the huge live guitar. The credit really goes to vocalist Nivek Ogre for pulling it all together. He delivers a freakish nightmare of a performance that lives up to the heavily edited vocals from the album versions of the songs. Oddly compelling are the bits between songs where he is trying to communicate from behind the thick wall of reverb and distortion on his vocals, like somekind of unintelligable psychotic freak. One slightly annoying thing about this cd is that it is recorded as one long track with no way to skip to particular songs, I guess the intention being that you have to listen to the whole thing. I would love to see a DVD release of the video version of this album, because as good as the cd sounds, seeing Skinny Puppy do their weird performance art style live show adds much more to the experiance.
