Album Description

1998 & ninth solo album by Germany's leading heavy metal guitarist virtuoso. 10 tracks, all featuring his signature guitarwork, but the additions of Johnny Gioeli and Ferdy Doernberg have caused quite a positive stir amongst his disciples! A Steamhammer/ SPV release.

4 out of 5 stars Unsung guitar hero..........2000-03-06

Featuring Johnny Gioeli on vocals,Pell's 1998 effort is a stunner-he is a guitar virtuoso, very original in style and also very articulate and inspired as a songwriter.Highlights are:'Carousel','Paying the Price',the title track, and,in fact, every song on this superb album.Top marks to Gioeli for his excellent vocal performance. If you liked Hardline, you won't be disappointed here.

5 out of 5 stars Rock of the highest quality.......1999-10-28

This album is simply superb.I do not understand why are this group are not more wideley reknown. The guitar playing of axel is simply silky smooth and fast without sounding like thrash like so many other lesser bands and the voice of Johnny gioeli must be the finest and most powerful of any rock band today.I have played this album to my friends who were all knockout by it so it looks like a few more orders could be on the way.Keep up the good work Axel.

5 out of 5 stars The melodic metal guitar wizard at his best.......1999-06-02

When this CD first arrived, my initial reaction was "oh no what's happened to Jeff Scott Soto". There was a new singer by the name of Johnny Gioeli peering at me from the inlay. I started to listen to the album and was hit by this guy's voice. Similar to Mr. Soto's, it was incredible, the best I've heard for a long time. This has to be Axel Rudi Pell's finest album to date, his guitar playing is magnificent, the best yet. The songs are incredibly well constructed with six of the ten tracks lasting over six minutes. The highlight of the album has to be the track "The Gates Of The Seven Seals" which is similar in style to "Black Moon Pyramid", "The Land Of The Giants" and "Casbah" from previous albums. Perhaps the most interesting track is the 9:36 long "Ashes From The Oath" which begins almost as a ballad and slowly builds in speed and complexity, showing Axel's guitar and song writing prowess to the full.

If you like Axel's previous albums this is a must have CD, if you have never bought one of his, you could ask for no better introduction.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Go and buy it right now!!.......2005-03-04

This was the first album i listened to from ARP and i guess it was for the best.Anyone who haven't heard of him try this album first. It's by far the best album he's ever released along with shadow zone(and masquerade ball).Firstly the album begins with an instrumendal(it's a cliche for AXP beggining his albums like that)which can be passed rather unnoticed."pay the price" is a classic European power metal song that will please the power fans(im not one of them though) including fast speed guitars and drumming. In my personal opinion the album accually begins from the third track "carousel" a hard and heavy song with great melodies, guitar riffs and a magical chorus that forces your head to bang all the time! From this point of the album the tracks are getting better and better with highlights such as "ride the rainbow","gates of the seven seals","living on the wildside".And finally the two historical momentary magical art-fantasy-astonishing tracks :"ashes from the oath" and "oceans of time".Two of the best ballands i've ever heard with an unexpectable feeling that makes your heart beat faster and dream of lost stars and journeys to outer space!ARP is very lucky to have johnny Gioeli(ex-Hardline)permorm for him. This guy is not singing...he's permoming art.He writes history with his hard rough and at the same time melodic "quick physical vibrato" voice!I could run to the cd store to buy this record because of this vocalist and only!
Seek this album, give axel a chance to surprise you and if you are Gioeli fans check out Hardline-double eclipse and II.
A certain must-buy-right-now album!!!!

3 out of 5 stars High Quality Musicianship, Average Results.......2005-01-06

If you are a fan of bands like Yngwie Malmsteen but you also like a slightly more rock approach then perhaps ARP is for you. I have often noticed that Axel Rudi Pell seems to be not all that well know but yet has a lot of die hard fans. I am a rarity as I know and like the band but am not a huge fan. I purchased Oceans Of Time and The Masquerade Ball since I had done my homework and could decifer that they were the most metal influenced of the ARP releases.

I gave three stars here because although I like some of the songs pretty well there are others I can more or less do without. One thing I do like about this album is that it does have a standout track which is Carousel. On the other hand some of the mid to slow paced songs such as Vodoo Nights and Night And Rain are really booring and useless standard fare rock ballads with simple paint by number lyrics.

Musicianship wise this band kicks [...]. I like Axel himself and the singer is a rock/metal God on the pipes. I think if the songwriting were a little stronger they could make it to the next level but right now the songwriting is not all that inspired. They get hot at times but too many songs have really generic hook lines and lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Axel's Best Album!.......2004-05-15

If you are new to Axel Rudi Pell, and love great vocals (Johnny Gioeli) with a melodic metal sound, this is for you. Listen to Gates of the Seven Seals, Ashes from the Oath, Carousel, Living on the Wildside, and Oceans of Time. You won't be disappointed in this album! If you enjoy it, I highly recommend The Masquerade Ball, which features Voodoo Nights, Night and Rain, The Masquerade Ball, Tear down the Walls, and The Line. Shadow Zone is another good choice, but not quite as good as Oceans of Time and The Masquerade Ball. Eternal Prisoner is another rockin album featuring Jeff Scott Soto on vocals. It rocks!

4 out of 5 stars This guy is awesome.......2003-10-20

The "German Malmsteen" is,r eality, better than Malmsteen. He can play all the high sped solos, reach all the notes, but also can compose with more "heart", and has a less mechanical approach to songwriting than Malmsteen does.

Its a very good album, very good.

5 out of 5 stars shamefully underrated.......2003-09-30

when i first heard this album, it was by pure chance. cool cover art...let's see how good the music is...The haunting guitar intro started shacking the foundations of my scepticism. "Carroussel" (the 3rd track) blew me to pieces. and then followed "ashes...", "living on the wildside..."and i knew i was missing something. these guys are serious. not at all interested to sound 'trendy', 'nu', or the like, ARP plays bad ass melodic power metal straight from the 80's, plus today's crisp production means. The axeman gives lavish solos on "seventh seal" and the title track, that give yngwie a run for his money. most of the songs are epic 7+ minutes long but NEVER too long! the solos are first grade, killer riffs here and there (try 'Carroussel'), drumming provided by jorg michael (Running wild, Stratovarius) is the tightest you'll ever hear. this man is a drum wiz' ! and you simply got to love the vocals! this album is an absolute treat. i also got "masquerade ball" which is just as good. i can strongly recommend starting with either album in case you're new to this totally awesome band.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic Journal by Bill Binkelman, New Age Reporter.......2006-11-19

Acoustic Journal is a melodic tapestry of fourteen solo (and one duet) acoustic guitar instrumentals, all of them accessible and easy to enjoy from the first playing. Moods and tempos vary but not in any way so as to present jarring juxtapositions between songs. If I was asked to compare Doug Hamer to other acoustic guitarists, I'd classify him as a blend of Clarelynn Rose and Ken Bonfield. He can kick up his proverbial heels on a song like "Java" which sways and rocks, albeit in a gentle fashion, or let subtle influences color his songs, such as on "Island Memories" (which draws from the Hawaiian slack key school) or the appropriately titled "Celtic Garden." At other times, he takes a more impresssionistic approach, playing in a sparser vein, e.g. "Fern Grotto," which displays his control of nuance and shading, as well as demonstrating some well-executed studio engineering techniques (echo effect) which can go a long way toward giving the music some depth and extra feeling. Later in this track, the pace picks up even while the mood remains draped in mystery, as Hamer's fingers fly every which way on the fret board and across the strings, picking fingerstyle in a dazzling display of control.

The strengths of Acoustic Journal are its relative simplicity (this is, after all, just a solo acoustic guitar CD, with no keyboards or other accompaniment, wtih the exception of the presence of a second guitarist on the song "Next to Me", a gentle romantic ballad, on which Hamer is joined by Dean Nissen) and it's wider than usual variety of music, embracing an assortment of moods and tempos. That Hamer manages to vary the music as much as he does while still keeping the overall "feel" of the CD on the quiet side (perhaps achieved through attention to detail in the recording process, e.g. mic placement, mixing, and engineering) makes the recording an ideal soundtrack to Saturday afternoon chores, especially outdoors, or maybe as the musical backdrop to a distant thunderstorm.

From the self-described (in the copious liner notes) "haunting chordal structure and swaying tempo" of "Wind in the Windmill" to the slyly cheerful "Indigo Skies" to the uptempo blues of "No Strings" and the serene album closer, "Goodbye Shanghi," Doug Hamer paints a multi-hued sonic landscape on his acoustic guitar, taking the listener through peaceful rural towns, winding through fog-shrouded valleys, and hiking to the tops of rolling hills. As I've always maintained, most acoustic intrumental music is especially well-suited for playing while enjoying our wonderful natural environment, whether it's the peaceful north woods of the Midwest, the expansive vistas of the Rockies or Grand Tetons or the breathtaking ocean views from Highway 1 along the Pacific coastline. Doug Hamer's Acoustic Journal is ideal music to listen to in any of these environs or you can enjoy it almost as much as an armchair traveler, too. Either way, I solidly recommend the album.
