5 out of 5 stars This is the true sequel to "Breakfast in America"..........2007-07-09

I came of age with the British Invasion in 1964 when I was seventeen. Over the years since then, I've closely followed a flow of wonderful and varied music from the Beatles, Kinks, Animals, Rolling Stones, and many others. Along the way, I've been heavy into Procol Harum, the Strawbs, Yes, Genesis, John Mayall, the Yardbirds, and most other quality British groups.

However, I realized a few years ago that "Breakfast in America" is still my all-time favorite "desert island" album. No doubt about it! I never get tired of listening... It's a perfect collection of songs with catchy melodies and clever lyrics that are richly (yet cleanly) performed and produced by a group of exceedinlgly talented musicians. Over time, I've gotten into every subtle "ooooh" and "aaaah" soaring harmony, every nice guitar and synthesizer part, every cool lyric, and even the background sound effects and comments that make a song special. (e.g. "What's she got, not a lot...")

When I decided to buy the re-mastered "Breakfast in America" CD, I started reading the Amazon reviews and became intrigued with the praise for Roger Hodgson's solo albums. So I purchased "In the Eye of the Storm" and "Ha, Ha" a month ago. I haven't stopped listening and humming along to them since! "In the Eye of the Storm" is truly the great album we all wanted to follow "Breakfast in America". Okay, I like "Famous Last Words..." (the actual BiA sequel), but it's not in the Supertramp league of greatness that marks this album.

Listening to this album makes it clear that Roger Hodgson is the the basis of the Supertramp sound we all know and love, and he shows it all here. Great songs, great playing and production, and even a great song like "Had a Dream" to kick it all off. That one song embodies almost every cool thing you could want in a Supertramp song. If I didn't know this was a solo album, I would swear it was Supertramp at their finest! And that's a LOT of praise from a skeptic like me.

So I highly recommend that you buy it today. Hey, I just bought it 15 years after it originally came out, and I'm now enjoying the fresh sound of a whole "new" super Supertramp album that I never knew existed. And you should also buy Roger Hodgson's "Ha, Ha", which is almost as good. Listen to "London" on that album and you will understand why the idea of Supertramp doing reggae is so compelling. Oh yeah, don't miss Roger's cool background comment in that song: " Ooo, so sorry boys..."

I think we need another excellent Roger Hodgson album to keep us going for twenty more years. The stereo in my Volvo sounds so much better than my home stereo in 1985. And I still need my rock fix everyday...

5 out of 5 stars Who needs the band........2007-05-12

The real force behind Supertramp. Roger needs no band. A fine under-appreciated album.

3 out of 5 stars North worth the money vs. the original pressing.......2006-08-04

As a body of work, Roger Hodgson's debut album gets five stars. It was easily one of the best albums of the '80s. This particular re-release only gets three stars. While it does sound slightly better (the original pressing had already been remastered for its release on CD), the artwork is of low quality. There is substantial moire on the booklet, and the inlay card also has a lower quality image. The clouds on the booklet are green, and not blue! If you decide to purchase this classic album, save your money and pick up the original A&M Audio Master Plus Series release from 1990. (A&M CD-5004 DIDX-86)

5 out of 5 stars In The Eye Of The Storm.......2006-07-04

Great music from a great musician!!! With the help of one of the biggest record labels Roger Hodgson created another masterpiece. If you are a fan of Supertramps works up to this solo release then you will really enjoy this release from 1984.

5 out of 5 stars Former co-founder of Supertramp strikes with his classic solo debut.......2005-12-10

Former Supertramp guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist Roger Hodgson released his solo debut In the Eye of the Storm in October of 1984.
This album was composed, performed and produced by Roger himself.
He played almost every instrument(guitars, bass guitar, keyboards) and sang every note(lead, backing and harmony vocals) himself save the drums which were played on all but two tracks by by one-time Santana drummer Michael Shrieve.
The first track on In The Eye of the Storm was the classic Had a Dream(Sleeping With the Enemy) is a classic. The song was released as a single(with that middle section deleted) and had a haunting video that is still a classic today and was the reason why many(including myself scooped this album up). The next track In Jeopardy was a typical catchy Hodgson song and was the second single from the album but unfortunately fell on deaf ears. The beautiful ballad Lovers in the Wind is next and it always sends shivers down the spine everytime I hear it. Hooked on a Problem ends the first half on a joking note and featured Scott Page on saxophones replacing John Helliwell's parts.
The uplifting Give Me Love Give Me Life kicks off the album's second half and is a great song as is the nearly 7 minute follow-up I'm Not Afraid. The album's closing track however is the other classic on the album aside Had a Dream which is the epic Only Because of You which is 8 minutes and 40 seconds of pure magic with great vocals and a stunning Hodgson guitar solo in the middle.
When released, In the Eye of the Storm did modestly well when released and to date remains the only Roger Hodgson album still available here in the US but is highly recommended!

Canadian edition of the Mahogany Rush frontman's long awaited 2000 album. Haunting vocals, melodic guitar solos & sign of the times lyrics combined with solid drum beats & Arabic guitar tones make Eye Of The Storm a winner. Frank's true musical influences shine brightly on almost every cut. The Doors, Santana & even Pink Floyd are prevalent. Tracks include, 'He's Calling', 'Avalon' & 'Since You Came Into My Life'.

5 out of 5 stars Love this musical cornucopia of guitar!!!.......2007-01-26

Frank Marino is the most under-rated guitarist of all time. Love the new stuff and the old "lengthy solos"!!! 5 Stars...Also glad to see Frank is now a born again Christian, way to go brother Marino!!!

2 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Guitar Playing but...........2007-01-15

This guy can really wail. This album contains some extraordinary guitar soloing by an exraordinary but underappreciated guitar player. That said, this is not a great album. The reviewer SM has hit the nail right on the head. This sounds like one long fast guitar solo over a plodding mid-tempo rythm section, both stuck in an endless loop going on for 62 minutes. When the album starts out, you sit there thinking, whoa, this guy can really play. But by the time the third or fourth song rolls around, the entire thing becomes excruciatingly dull and repetitive to the point where the listener is constantly checking the CD program to see how much time is left before the CD mercifully ends. That's not a good thing, folks. The moral of the story is that great soloing alone does not make for great or listenable songs. There has to be some structure and context to the soloing. The songs here are rather nondescript and totally indistinguishable from each other. There is no change in the tempo of the songs (they are all midtempo), there is no change in the tone of the guitar (that harsh metallic tone starts to grate on the ears after awhile), there is no variety of textures, there are no other instruments besides guitar, bass and drums other than a hammond organ in one song. And the nondescript bass and drums don't do anything other than provide the same machine-like boring mid-tempo backdrop to the endless guitar soloing on every song. In short, all the elements that make for an interesting album are missing, except for some admittedly fine soloing. If you want to hear what Frank Marino sounds like in his best and most diversified arena, get the excellent "World Anthem" CD. And Frank, on your next CD may I suggest: add more instruments, play some songs fast, some songs slow, play some acoustic, some electric, experiment with some different tones and timbres, and create some songs with a definite melody and a catchy riff and structure that you can play around with rather than just playing a lot of free-form endless soloing...

5 out of 5 stars Still Making Great Music.......2006-08-01

I've been a fan since about 1975. This a more mature Frank Marino as evidenced by the lyrics. My favorite cut has to be Ordinary Man. Love the "3rd Stone from the Sun" ending. But all the songs are strong. Get his 'Real Live' cd also and see that he is just as technically good live.

He has got to be one of the best overall guitarists ever. He plays hard rock, psychedelic rock, jazz, blues, slide all at a maestro level. Some guitarists may be able to come close to him in one type, but he has mastered them all.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD TO BE BACK.......2006-01-17

I ORDERED THIS CD FRON CANADA AS SOON AS I KNEW IT WAS AVAILABLE.I DID NOT NEED TO HERE A CUT FIRST- I KNEW IT WOULD BE GREAT!!!AND I WAS RIGHT-BUT THAT'S THE STORY WITH ANY OF THIS VERY TALENTED MANS WORK- HE IS VERY POSSIBLY THE MOST UNDERRATED GUITARIST EVER-HE HAS DEVELOPED SUCH A STYLE AND SOUND THAT ANY FUTURE RELEASES SHOULD BE SENT AUTOMATICALLY TO ANY TRUE FAN -HE'S THAT GOOD!! THIS ALBUM SHOULD DISPEL ANY RUMORS ANOUT A HENDRIX REINCARNATE!! FRANK HAS TAKEN ANY SOUNDS THAT CONNECT HIM TO HENDRIX AND EXPOUNDED ON THOSE SWEET NOTES UNTIL THEY ARE TRULY WORKS OF MAGIC-HIS ABILITY TO FUSE EVERY FORM OF GUITAR PLAYING FROM JAZZ RIFFS TO RIGHTEOUS BLUES LICKS IS A TRUE INDICATION OF HOW TALENTED HE REALLY IS. I SMILED A BIG SOUTHERN SMILE WHEN I HEARD AVALON AND THOUGHT FONDLY OF ANOTHER GREAT UNDER RATED GUTIARIST THE LATE DEWAYNE ALLMAN. FRANK HAS A SPECIAL GIFT THAT I ONLY WISH EVERY AUDIOPHILE COULD EXPERIENCE.ONCE YOU REALLY LISTEN TO THIS GUY--YOUR HOOKED- THIS ABLUM HAS A VERY FLUID FEEL TO IT AND REMINDS ME OF THE TIMES I'VE SEEN HIM LIVE- I CAN IMAGINE HEARING STORM WARNING AS AN INTRODUCTION TO LADIES AND GENTLEMAN WILL YOU PLEASE WELCOME "BACK" FRANK MARINO AND MAHOGANY RUSH!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE CD!.......2003-08-04

This CD is a must have for bluegrass or gospel music lovers. He Ain't Never Done Me Nothing But Good is the album's highlight. Sonya and Becky Isaacs' vocals are angelic. This is a great family sound. If you love blood harmony this album is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A "must-buy" for bluegrass gospel fans everywhere!.......2003-06-15

The Isaacs' "Eye of the Storm" includes 14 new songs that provide insight, direction and advice to stand with Jesus to survive life's stormy perils that rage around us. The Isaacs are well-known for their professionally-arranged acoustic bluegrass gospel music, with excellent vocal harmony and superb instrumental prowess.

The band includes Lily Isaacs (vocals), Ben Isaacs (bass, vocals), Sonya Isaacs Surrett (mandolin, vocals), Rebecca Isaacs Bowman (guitar, vocals), Tim Surrett (dobro, vocals), John Bowman (guitar, banjo, vocals), and Rickie Simpkins (fiddle). Simpkins has only been with The Isaacs since late 2001, and his distinctive fiddling adds so much to their outstanding sound, but I understand that he is no longer touring with the group. Guest artists Jeff Collins (piano), Tony Creasman (percussion), and David Johnson (banjo) each contribute on one song apiece. While all lyrics are included with this CD, The Isaacs should have identified the vocalists for each song.

There's a very nice variety of material on this album. The project opens with Dottie Rambo's uptempo "He Ain't Never Done Me Nothin' But Good " that features some fine vocals interspersed with tasty banjo and fiddle. David Johnson wrote "Walking Down the Road," a bouncy number that allows the guitar, mandolin, dobro and fiddle to shine. Dee Gaskin's two contributions (Evergreen Shore, Another Soldier Down) demonstrate strong lyrical and melodic sensibilities, and Gerald Crabb's two compositions (Who Will Survive the Storm, The Sun Will Never Set Again) show that he can write contemporary gospel songs that provide inspiration from a uniquely traditional perspective. Of the other original songs on this album written by band members Sonya, Rebecca, and Tim, "He's Taking Care of Me" and "There Through It All" and "He is Leading Me" all share a common message. While the young child singing a verse on the former is cute (liner notes don't identify the young vocalist), I think I would have left that off the album. The song, "It is Well (Elisha's Song)" is receiving good radio airplay around the country. "Don't Let Your Light Grow Dim" is a personal favorite with its old-time gospel bounce, as is the bluegrassy "Why Are You Hungry?" which reminds me of a song that Reno and Smiley could have done fifty years ago. The album closes with a sensational a capella rendition of "Star Spangled Banner" that sent a tingle up this reviewer's spine, especially as their soaring vocals explode like bombs bursting in air.

The Isaacs have a clear winner with Eye of the Storm. For over three decades, this group has been touring, thrilling audiences, and presenting their ministry in song. Their well-seasoned professionalism makes this album a "must-buy" for bluegrass gospel fans everywhere. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

4 out of 5 stars Absolute Classic "five stars +" The four stars was a typo!.......2006-04-17

I've had The Eye Of Every Storm ever since it first came out, and I'm sorry I'm just now posting a review for it. I am a HUGE music fan, and my taste in music covers a wide range of artists and styles of music. This recording is one of the VERY BEST I've ever purchased period. It's actually my favorite cd of all time. This is a brilliant record, an instant classic that should be placed among the ranks of Dark Side of the Moon, but will probably never get the recognition it truly deserves. Everything about the album/cd from it's packaging, to of course the music itself sets a mood and pace that is both relaxing and somber, and keeps the listener at that level for the entire recording without any deviation what so ever. Every song is equally superb, perfectly accomplishing the mood intended for the lister. There are many other artists that I'm sure anyone who reads this review would be familiar with, that have made some great melancholy records, but NONE will come close to The Eye Of Every Storm. If you are a true fan of music, you should own this record. To all of you Neurosis fans that didn't like this album because it's not Through Silver in Blood, Take another look and listen to The Eye Of Every Storm with a different insight. I think you will come to appreciate the time, effort, and creativity that was put into this recording.

NEUROSIS - The Eye of Every Storm
-
Neurosis is a band that has been progressing with each release they have done... `The Eye of Every Storm' is no exception. They started in 87' as a punk/hardcore Metal band. `Souls at Zero' came out in 92 and set a new direction which they perfected in 96 with `Through Silver and Blood'. Now in 2004 they've moved into Post-Metal territory (which they were slowly heading with `A Sun that Never Sets'-in 2001) Truth is... Not every fan will like this. Personally I do. I love bands like Pelican, Isis, (Specially their newer stuff) Red Sparowes, GY!BE, and Mogwai. More so I enjoy seeing a band that started heavy go Prog. Honestly... When bands `age' they want change, they generally have 3 choices:
#1) Progression - Bands like Opeth, and Amorphis, have taken this route and continued growing as musicians
#2) Stay the Same - Slayer has kept their general sound for decades. (Sure they've grown and matured a bit, did some lower tunings but overall still the same focus)
#3) Sell-Out - And yes of course I'm going to cite Metallica...
-So ideally progression is my preferred choice (And obviously the choice for Neurois as well)
Musically this album is `softer' in terms of Neurosis but just as dark as anything they've ever done. Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly have never sounded better, their deep beckoning voices only further an atmosphere that really could be the soundtrack to the eye of a storm... The Guitar work is subtle but effective and the Keys are more dominant on this album. Also the minimalist drumming truly helps keep the ambient feel flowing throughout the entire album.
Patience is a virtue exercised while listening to this album but it will pay off if you let the albums beauty unfold in front of you.
Honestly if you like Progressive Music, Post-Rock/Metal, or any of the bands mentioned above check this album out... Also for a heavier journey check out there back catalogue.
Favorite Songs: Burn, No River to Take Me Home, and A Season in the Sky.

5 out of 5 stars INSIDE THE EYE.......2006-01-26

I'm a fairly big fan of post-rock/ post-metal. I love bands like Isis, Agalloch, GY!BE, Pelican, etc. But for me, it all really started with Neurosis. These guys not only do a lot of the little cool things that Tool does, but they actually did them first. Granted, Neurosis is an underground band (and that's where they belong) but you can't fault them for being innovative. Many may see "The Eye of Every Storm" as just a basic, boring rock album, but give it time. This band's maturity level is far beyond most of their competitors.

Unlike most of the post-metal that I love, the name of this album actually represents the album as a whole. The sounds and patterns in most of the songs actually reflect the spinning, vast, and ominous nature of a hurricane's eye. Don't take it too literally though, it's more symbolic. The songs won't sound like storms; instead, the song-structures will exemplify them.

This CD is not as heavy as earlier Neurosis offerings; specifically it's much less abrasive. But it's not radio music either. The songs are long and drawn out. It's gloomy, post-grunge -- not commercial, but still accessible. Not a bad place to start if you're not familiar with the band. Don't expect something epic, grand, orchestral, or conceptual. This is just a group of guys playing in a band. However, what has always set them apart is the maturity with which they can construct and produce music. These guys play with both style and conviction. Solid writing and solid lyrics are presented with impact. Listen to this for a while and you will definitely begin to appreciate it in an intangible way. You won't be able to describe it, but you will know: it's just better somehow

1 out of 5 stars .......2005-09-04

Moody reflections and expanded journeys make up for the lack of precipitation, but it isn't enough to hold one's attention for long. While it requires a severe degree of patience to listen to an hour plus of modified songs that flow in unison but achieve no quantitative value, one could say that there's a progressive sense of art beneath all the instrumentation. Tons of moments of quietude sometimes feel a bit too long but I'm sure they achieve their purposes, and whether it carries a weight of benefitial object is up to the listener to decide. Such calm moments are juxtaposed with heavier passages and some shredded singing. Nearly every song follows the same structure. This of course, is a reciprocal and fitting situation which complements the title of the album. Some might find it a challenging experience while others will want to just push the fast forward button. I won't deny the originality within this somewhat mild storm, but in retrospect this album did not manage to move me in any way, nor did it summon any form of internal emotions. If anything, it tested my capacity to endure hardship and quite frankly, I'm not too good at that.

5 out of 5 stars neurosis keeps evolving.......2005-09-03

i've read alot of reviews about this album, and many of them are just completely slamming this album. now i'm not one to judge, but not all music is supposed to be heavy with horrible screaming and ignorant lyrics and where every single song on the album sounds exactly the same. music is art, and art is always evolving. everything evolves. change is beautiful. evolving doesn't necessarily mean that things are becoming better, it just happens so accept it. i like bands that challenge the listener. it keeps the imagination and mystery alive. i love neurosis because they always change, and they do what they want to do. i saw neurosis play at the troubadour in l.a. in november of 2004. there was no opening band. they played for about 2 and a half hours. they also had a special guest play with them....JARBOE!!!!!!i have always adored neurosis and swans, but that night just simply sealed the deal. the lighting was perfect, the videos being shown were magnificent, the set was breathtaking, and the crowd was so unbelievably nice (which i'm not used to). jarboe is such an amazing and creepily effeftive performer and artist.
anyways, what i'm getting at is neurosis is going to keep on changing whether you like it or not. Just listen to their first album!!!it's pure harcore bay area political punk! and for god sakes go see them live in concert. they are such an amazing band to see live! tour i saw them on was the eye of every storm tour with jarboe, they only played 4 dates for the tour and they were in all different parts of the u.s. they dont tour a whole lot anymore, so you'd better see them while theyre still around!!!
embrace the beauty of evolution

5 out of 5 stars Underrated album.......2007-02-05

This is not one of their more well known albums, but it's one of my favorites. If you like good southern rock, you'l love this.

4 out of 5 stars "Hurry Sundown" alone makes this 2 for 1 CD worth the money.......2006-10-25

You'll get debates as to which Outlaws CD is their best. Some will stand by their earliest efforts that laid the groundwork, and what future recordings would be judged by. And to be fair songs like "Waterhole; Knoxville Girl; Freeborn Man" and "Green Grass and High Tides" are tough acts to follow. But in my opinion, Their most solid beginning to end record to listen to, as well as the best produced is "Hurry Sundown." From the opening guitar strums of "Gunsmoke", through the ending guitar licks of the mood setting "Man of the Hour", "Hurry Sundown" is a variance of well written songs, and well produced music, courtesy of Bill Syzmick (producer of quality Eagles records) that showed a band confident in putting out a variety of songs that tilt in the more contemporary direction for the most part, as opposed to the powerful attacking guitar assaults of some of their earlier music. That's not an affirmation or condemnation on either approach, merely a fair contrast to let one know what to expect. "So 'Fraid" and "Heavenly Blue" are two of my all time favorite Outlaw tunes and I challenge one not to find themselves tapping their toes or singing along to some extemely catchy tunes. But "Hurry Sundown; Hearing My Heart Talkin'" and "Holiday" are solid Outlaw classics whose opening cues when played in concert excite many an Outaw fan. The solo "Hurry Sundown" CD I own is a fabulous transfer and great sounding CD. I can't speak for the recording sound quality for "In The Eye of the Storm", but do know the CD itself, while not up to previous Outlaw standards, isn't a bad record. It can be said that the writing is a little lazier than in the past. Though "The Lights Are On But Nobody's Home" and "It's Alright" are catchy tunes, they are the polar opposite of aforementioned songs from some of the earliest Outlaw songs- very repetitive in lyrics and guitar work. "Long Gone" is a powerfuly sung, guitar attack worthy or recognition. And their cover of Elvis Costello's "Miracle Man" is a catchy rendition that carries definitive Outlaw flavor. But while those songs are the ones I tilt to the most, added along with the remaining songs, it's just not the full throttled quality recording Outlaws fans grew accustomed to. Given that and things I've heard about the quality of the recording of that segment of this 2 for 1 CD, it's hard to give it a ringing endorsement. But if the quality is even a 7 out of 10 for "Storm", with "Hurry Sundown" there to pick up the slack (a 5 star CD in its own right) the combination gives a strong sampling of the Outlaws evolution from the mid 70s to the mid 80s and for the price available is a worthy purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Unremarkable.......2006-06-02

The Outlaws give it another try, and come up short once again. Only a slight improvement over their previous release (Playin' To Win), the material on In the Eye of the Storm is largely forgettable. Only a few tracks are worth repeated listening (It's All Right, Blueswater and Too Long Without Her, all of which harken back to the band's early glory days). A couple of tracks show promise (Dance With Me and I'll Be Leaving Soon) but never quite seem to gel. Maybe it's because they sound like Burton Cummings is singing them?

Once again, though, the CD sound quality is substandard its almost criminal, rendering another poor album virtually unlistenable.

3 out of 5 stars In the Eye of the Storm/... Revisited.......2003-07-17

Dear fellow Outlaw fans. I feel I was a bit harsh in my earlier review and wanted to take the opportunity to lighten-up a little.
For the most part, the first eight tracks of "In The Eye Of The Storm" are mixed fairly well. When listening to the original album, I was quickly reminded this was not one of the better produced efforts to begin with. However, track 9. "I'll Be Leaving Soon", which is one of my favorite tracks was not remastered well at all. Once the acoustic guitar opening fades and the song starts to kick at the 53-55 second mark, you can tell an album was used as the reccording source. Listen for the bump sound.

The Hurry Sundown tracks are just fine. All in all, the CD would be a good addition to any Outlaw fan's collection. But it would still be nice if the original masters were used for "In The Eye of The Storm" and "Playin To Win". To any record label thinking of issuing " The Outlaws, Los Hombres Malo 1982 release in the future, do us fans a favor. Please use the original Arista master tapes!

4 out of 5 stars In the Eye of the Storm/... [IMPORT].......2003-07-16

Most Outlaws fans including myself would agree "In The Eye Of The Storm" was not one of their best. However, it still has some nice tracks, and we have waited so long for it's release. Similar to Playin To Win" release by same record label, what you have here is a 24 bit remastering from an LP. If you listen very carefully, you can even hear a few nicks, pops and bumps on some tracks. This is in reference to the songs from "In The Eye of The Storm" tracks, not Hurry Sundown.

The vocals on some of the tracks are distorted & scratchy, especially when the letter "S" is involved in any phrase. If you do not own a copy of the album "In The Eye Of The Storm" or Hurry Sundown on CD, then go for it. If you already own In The Eye on LP,and Hurry Sundown on CD, save your money. It's really a shame to pay good money and not get the quality re-issues we deserve.

5 out of 5 stars Great mix of singers and music.......2007-02-25

Joe Lynn Turner was my main point of interest in buying the Brazen Abbot CDs. I find out very quickly that Vikström and Edman are excellent singers also. The musicians on this album are all incredible and the songs really are great. Sometimes when you get that much talent in the room the band suffers but not here. I would recommend this to anyone who loves melodic hard rock.
