Metal fans appreciate merchandise that's as extravagant as the music is heavy. And Iron Maiden's "metal," (tin) box, with a bas-relief, red-eyed Eddie mascot on its lid and a gothic, pewter-based shot glass with a glowering Eddie on the bottom, is indeed a nice bit of heavy metal. Nestled inside are three two-CD sets, comprising 77 live songs, as well as a "family tree" scroll secured with a metal Eddie ring. As usual with Maiden's prolific live output, Eddie's Archive contains uniformly excellent recordings. The first set, "The BBC Archives," chronicles four concerts conducted between 1979 and 1988; it serves up the expected hits, including "Run to the Hills," with the first four songs of disc one featuring original singer Paul Di'Anno. The gem of Eddie's Archive is "Best of the B-Sides," which features 31 tunes (mostly studio recordings), including awesome covers of Jethro Tull's "Cross-Eyed Mary," Golden Earring's "Kill Me ce Soir," two Montrose songs, and cuts originally done by Chuck Berry and Led Zeppelin--as well as covers of such obscure bands as Nektar and Beckett. "B-Sides" is almost worth the price of admission, though the package's "stash" box and shot glass are musts for militant Maiden devotees. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars FOR FANS ONLY !!!.......2006-04-16

Hi METALFANS from around the world !!! I have absolutely every album CD & DVD and many Maxisingles....I had to purchase my used "EDDIES ARCHIVES" from another country !!!

Its a large tin box, inside you find velvet lining (Blue for the first edition, red if its the second edition), 3 double cds...im sure others have detailed in their reviews...a glass with eddies face at the bottom, a scroll (Family tree) and a ring on the scroll...

What can i say....Its just marvelous, the 3 double cds arent sold out of the box set so if you are a fan you are forced to purchase this....i was wishing it had a DVD but then if you are a DIE HARD MAIDEN FAN you must have anything the band has ever touched, designed or created !!!! HAHAHAHA

NOTE: the double cd titled "B-sides" is great but not as complete as the other HARD TO GET "24 unreleased studio tracks (Double too)!!!

Its expensive....but as my review title displays: ITS ONLY FOR FANS !!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price!!!!!.......2006-03-20

I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the limited edition numbered sets, and I have to say it was entirely worth every single penny!!! If you're just getting into Maiden, or a "casual listener", I don't think this is the right set for you. Might want to start with "Edward the great", or "best of the beast", collections, but if you're a fan, I HIGHLY suggest owning this. It will make you truely appreciate how great this band is. The live recordings are very high quality, and definitely showcase the strengths of each member of the band. Far from being another "best of" collection, I found it extremely refreshing to hear a variety of songs rarely heard unless you own the albums. I've never walked away from a maiden show disappointed, and this set lives up to the high standards of one of the best metal bands out there.

4 out of 5 stars A must-have for any true fan.......2004-09-03

Anybody who claims to be into heavy metal and says anything bad about Iron Maiden is a complete loser. This box is a gem. It introduces us to the true power of Maiden through the live recordings. The B-sides are really great songs. Iron Maiden's B-Sides are another band's album tracks. They are that good. Plus the box, the shot glass, the family tree and the ring add value to an alomst perfect package.

My only complaints are:
1) Songs like Iron Maiden are repeated many times.
2) They could've given us all the B-sides. Most of them are here anyway.

All in all, this is a great package, a must-have for any Iron Maiden fan. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewer "FIshcake" is an idiot!!! Iron Maiden Rules!!!!!!.......2004-08-24

Don't be fooled by useless reviews from people like "Fishcake" found on this list! Iron Maiden always has been at the top of the metal game. They are living legends and are still putting out quality music...quality metal. How many bands can pull it off with 3 guitarists? Any true fan of metal or Maiden will want this box and will gain even more appreciation for what they've accomplished over the last 20 years. Up the Irons!!!

2 out of 5 stars It's not worth the price.......2004-05-12

Ok, the package is gorgeous. But little else.

The gem here are CD's 3 and four, BEAST OVER HAMMERSMITH. The sound, the performance, the set list (it's practically a "Best Of" their first three albums), everything is top notch. And this perfection is also a problem!! Why?

Because, listening to how good this live set is, you will notice how weak, really, are all other live albums by Maiden. You'll notice how the drumming by Clive Burr was much more powerful, precise, loud and creative than that of Nicko. You'll notice how all the live albums with Janick Gers are crap.

The B-Sides are interesting, but already own most of them. The first yeasrs recording are just a curiosity, unless you really feel pleasure by listening to "Iron Maiden" 5 times....

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good - if you're a die-hard Maiden fan.......2003-10-24

Iron Maiden has been one of the world's finest heavy metal bands for nearly three decades now, and their reign of power in the metal world shows no signs of letting down. In late 2002, the band released a box set of material previously unavailable on compact disc - tracks from Reading festivals, BBC radio shows, concerts, and even some B-Sides! Read on for my review of Eddie's Archive - Iron Maiden's first (and to date, their only) box set.

PROS:
-Are you a big time Maiden fan who just LOVES their live recordings? This set's gonna be heaven for you if you said yes - because four of the six discs in this collection are dedicated entirely to live stuff.
-Are you a Maiden completist who wants to find many of those hard-to-find B-Sides? You'll get a ton of them on here - two discs worth! Among these are covers of awesome bands like Led Zeppelin, Golden Earring, Montrose, UFO, Jethro Tull, The Skyhooks, and others!
-The set includes an awesome shot glass, and a scroll that shows the band's history - including where the band members came from and where some of them went to after leaving the band!
-It's a career-spanning set, meaning in addition to material with Bruce Dickinson, you get Paul Di'Anno and Blaze Bayley stuff too.

CONS:
-This is a pricey set. Price alone is going to make it so that the only people who buy this set are die-hard fans of Iron Maiden.
-The "rarities" discs contain ONLY B-SIDES, and even then it's only THE BEST OF the B-SIDES. Among the B-Sides the set deprives you of are the humorous Mission From 'Arry, and rockers like Massacre, and I Live My Way. Because it's ONLY B-SIDES, you don't get the A-Side Women In Uniform that never appeared on any album. You also DON'T get several unreleased live and demo versions of songs and radio versions, or Virus, which is only avaialble on the band's hits compilation, Best Of The Beast.
-This is a very scattershot box - and a wasted opportunity. They should've done a box of NOTHING BUT RARITIES, not a bunch of live stuff only the die-hard fans will enjoy. To be perfectly honest, the only true attraction of this compilation is the B-Sides discs, and most Maiden die-hards already have these songs on bootlegs.
-Too many songs appear more than once. Iron Maiden (the song) appears no less than FIVE F*CKING TIMES! THAT'S OVERKILL!

OVERALL:
If you've got money to burn and you just can't get enough of Iron Maiden, I think you'll be pretty happy with this set. Just be warned - it's far from perfect.
