5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Cinderalla Lovers.......2007-03-15

My daughter loves the Cinderella movie and this CD is perfect. It has all the main songs and instumental music from the movie. There are also some additional songs not from the movie on the second half of the CD. Whenever we listen to this CD it's almost like watching the movie. Anyone who has kids that love the movie will also love this.

3 out of 5 stars Need Help.......2006-07-12

Can anyone tell me if there are lyrics to the song "So This is Love" on this CD. I am looking for a CD that has the lyrics as well as the music to this song.

5 out of 5 stars Cinderella (Special Edition Soundtrack).......2006-02-28

What a delight to finally hear the rich background music and much of the dialogue from this Disney masterpiece on one compact disk! Long awaited to be released on DVD from the Disney vaults, this entertaining CD companion piece to the new DVD has been certainly worth the wait. Ilene Woods, as Cinderella, has one of the warmest, most expressive voices you'll ever want to hear! All the voices are well cast, and the incidental music is evocative of a more innocent time and place. In addition, some deleted tunes, a Jim Brickman song, and an updated version of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" are included, stretching the audience appeal of this disk. Listeners of all ages will truly believe that if you wish and try hard enough, your heart's dream can come true!

2 out of 5 stars Not really a "Special Edition" Soundtrack...........2006-02-02

Yeah, ummm Disney, ya went wrong ONCE AGAIN!

This soundtrack only has three new songs as followed:
Dancing on a Cloud (Demo) (Only really new track which is already on the DVD)
Beautiful (On Jim Brickman's The Disney Songbook CD)
Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes (On Disney Mania 3)

So if you already own the original soundtrack, Jim Brickman's awesome Disney CD, Disney Mania 3 CD, and the Cinderella Special Edition DVD... PLEASE skip this CD.
Thank you! :)

Album Description

Featuring original music composed by Alberto Iglesias. Adapted from the best-seller John le Carre's romantic thriller, two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz head the cast of "The Constant Gardener." In a remote area of northern Kenya, the dedicated activist Tessa Quayle (Weisz) is found brutally murdered. Her travelling companion, a local doctor, appears to have fled the scene and the evidence points to a crime of passion. Sandy Woodrow (Danny Huston), Sir Bernard Pellegrin (Bill Nighy), and other member of the British High Commission assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered colleague Justin Quayle (Fiennes) will leave the matter to their discretion. They could not be more wrong... Featuring music performed by acclaimed Kenyan percussionist and Real World recording artist Ayub Ogada, Alberto Iglesias' ("La Mala Educacion," "The Dancer Upstairs," "Todo Sobre Mi Madre") lush score evokes the film's compelling African and European landscapes.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Score.......2007-04-24

For someone like me who purchases soundtracks for the score to use for dance & skating programs, this soundtrack definitely made it into my collection. My only minus to the soundtrack is that there isn't much variety among the many tracks. But I am still able to work around it.

3 out of 5 stars Only track 13.......2007-03-31

In my opinion, only track 13 is worthy of buy this CD. Track 13 is beautiful, other than that extremely depressing music...... Once again track 13 is the most beautiful adn touching music that I have ever heard!

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2007-02-12

My CD was delivered in a very timely manner and the product was in great shape upon arrival.

4 out of 5 stars A nice reminder of a very moving movie.......2007-01-12

Favorite songs are the ones by Ayub Ogada. I think it's wonderful that we found his music through this film.

3 out of 5 stars it captures the spirit of the movie.......2006-11-10

I like this soundtrack because it reminds me of the movie, which I loved. I am not sure I would appreciate it much if I hadn't seen the movie and didn't have pictures in my mind for each theme. It is redolent of Africa though and that in itself is satisfying.

Johnny Hartman may have been the greatest of the jazz balladeers, his unmistakably rich voice and subtle sense of pitch and diction developing the art of Billy Eckstine and Arthur Prysock. Most know his work only in the superb 1963 collaboration with John Coltrane, but this CD from the same year is as fine a showcase for Hartman's abilities, both on medium swing tunes and the romantic standards that were his forte. The accompaniment is at the highest level, with Hank Jones on piano and brother Elvin on drums, and appearances by the two subtlest guitarists of the era, Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell, embellishing Hartman's cashmerelike voice. The burred sound of Illinois Jacquet's tenor, reminiscent of Ben Webster on ballads, is a fine, grainy complement to Hartman's smooth baritone. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars If you love Hartman, please do NOT overlook this one..........2007-07-05

Ahhh, Johnny. I jus' can't sing enough praises about this man an' the work he did throughout his career. Findin' a truly rare jazz vocalist outside the realm of the well knowns (i.e. Billie, Sinatra, Nat, etc.) is a trial in itself, but whenever people discover Hartman, they seem 'ta stick with 'em. His voice is relaxed an' tempered, his sound is lush an' quietly beautiful, an' his selection of songs is on point with whatcha would wanna hear from him. Great standards like 'In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning', 'Don't You Know I Care', 'Don't Call it Love' an' the title song are all jus' morose melodies an' Hartman's treatment of them evokes jus' that. These're the kinda songs that're for a certain kind'a mood, one extreme or the other. In other words, you can entertain a date with it, but me personally, i'm jus' as well off pourin' some liquor, starin' up at the stars from the hood of a car an' just letting the complications of love an' the enormity of the world overwhelm me. I'm prob'ly more prone to do the latter, but both're appropriate circumstances. This release may have been overshadowed by the 100 million-star Coltrane an' Hartman album which came out the same year, but don't let that sway you, 'cause if the voice on that one reached out an' touched 'ya, then it'll be sure to do the same on here. Hartman's vocals are outstanding an' his efforts make this a classic to sit between the aforementioned Trane an' Hartman disc an' my Clifford Brown with Strings disc. It jus' gets no better, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic beyond words..........2007-06-13

This man had some kind of voice! If you are a fan of Frank, Nat, Mel, Tony, etc... then add this guy to that short list of greats. How this man never became as famous as the foursome mentioned above I will never know. All I do know is this - this guy had one of the most beautiful, rich, romantic voices I have ever heard. It is very difficult, if not nearly impossible to express in words how wonderful of a singer this man was. Just listen to him and see for yourself. If you loved him on the Coltrane album (another 5-star treasure) then you will love this one almost just as much (that recording still is my favorite of all-time). Johnny may not have been that popular with the masses, but his work is very highly respected and adored by everyone in the jazz world - critics, musicians, and fans alike.

He may not have Coltrane, Tyner, and Garrison backing him up on this one, however the cats he does have aren't too shabby - Illinois Jacquet (tenor sax), Milt Hinton (bass), Elvin Jones (once again on the drums), Jimmy Hall and Kenny Burrell (on guitars). Not a bad line-up to say the least! And believe me folks, Johnny and the gang all sound flawless.

This is one of those recordings that you want to dim the lights down real low, pour yourself a martini or glass of wine, sit back and reeeeeeeelax. Or better yet, grab your gal (or guy) and let the music help take the two of you to the promised land. As soon as the first song (Charade) comes on, you will see what I'm talking about. I can't get enough of this one! Also, his version of "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning" is one of the greatest I have ever heard and may even trump Old Blue Eyes himself (which is almost sacrilege for an Italian-American like myself to say!). However, you will just have to see for yourself.

ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars I'd die to have a voice like Hartman's.......2007-03-16

Johnny Hartman absolutely had the most resonant voice that I have ever heard (in jazz); yet, he had a very relaxed way of singing. It seems like he just breathed and all of that sound came out.

I really like this album, but to me, it's not as good as the classic he made with Coltrane, or Songs from the Heart (his first album). The pairing with Illinois Jacquet really works (especially on "Don't You Know I Care"). The choice of tunes is OK but some some tracks are regretably short.

In short, this is a fine album and one that I recommend. It is not his very best work, however.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth as it gets.......2006-12-14

I'm not a big fan of most jazz vocalists but I LOVE Johnny Hartman! I bought this record a few days ago and I'm totally digging it. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because I've been spoiled over the last few years by the album he did with Coltrane. Don't get me wrong, Illinois Jacquet lays down some great tones on this album, but the Hartman/Coltrane album has a lot more horn woven through the entire record, and it's quite hypnotizing. HOWEVER, this album has something the Coltrane album doesn't have- GREAT guitar work! Kenny Burrell is a genius, and Jim Hall is very talented as well.

A year or so back I fell in love with the Sinatra record In the Wee Small Hours but I've gotta admit, the Johnny Hartman version of "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" eclipses Frank's version! If you're searching for something to spin on a romantic evening with that special someone, something smoother than glass, give Johnny Hartman a spin. You WON't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars you lie awake and think about the girl.......2004-04-03

I was listening to the Carly Simon cover of Wee Small Hours and I said " I bet this person has never heard Johnny Hartman's version of this because they would've never tried it." I am not a comparer but this is easily one of the gems of vocal performance. Yes, Frank is god, yadda yadda yadda, go to Vegas and have a drink for me, but this guy is the full bill of goods.
I would love to use this in a film version Of Catcher in The Rye, because there is such a wonderful atmosphere about this.
The cd as a whole is a little loungier(he covers charade, for god's sake) and purists jonesing for the Hartman Coltrane should just listen to that again....but it is still a great jazz record. Some of the arrangements are amazing. A couple of times the rhythm section drops out, leaving Johnny with one instrument. These moments are simplicity itself, but heartstoppingly gorgeous.
And hartman is a master. Pure and simple

oh, and the cover is why I bought the album...so evocative of a certain period.

The producers of Mike Leigh's vibrant Topsy-Turvy took many big studio meetings seeking financing for their film. Word has it all went swimmingly until time for the pitch came--there are apparently no two words as unsettling to Hollywood film execs as "Gilbert & Sullivan." But the studio system's loss turned out to be the indie film's--and our--gain. Leigh's film brought the composers' late-19th-century mounting of their breakthrough The Mikado to an all-too-familiar life, filled with as many neuroses, foibles, and fragile egos as any modern Broadway musical. The film's score, an inviting pastiche adapted from Mikado (and other G&S staples) by veteran Carl Davis, may upset purists with its time-conscious liberties. But then, it might just win over a receptive yet unexposed new audience for whom this music may seem strangely familiar, as well it should: this is where modern musical theater began. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Here's a How-De-Do!.......2007-02-22

It's brilliant, really! I am a self-confessed Gilbert and Sullivan fanatic, and so the release of this soundtrack to accompany a truly delightful movie provided me with an "Oh, joy! Oh, rapture!" moment ... many of them, actually! To hear some of my favorite tunes from some of my favorite G & S operetti performed so well makes my heart "sing-o" - and me, too!

5 out of 5 stars Topsy-Turvy is TOPS!!!.......2007-02-21

This is Gilbert and Sullivan like you will never hear again! These performances are so fresh and alive with comedy flourish that my formerly "purist" ears reveled in delight at this magnificeant rendition of these great operettas. It is wonderful to hear excerpts from PRINCESS IDA,IOLANTHE and SORCERER (as well as THE MIKADO) when so many recordings already exist of the other G&S chestnuts,PINAFORE and PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
The actual cd itself fills the speakers and is a true listener's dream.A great soundtrack of a great film.Wonderfully recorded by SONY.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2005-02-25

This is a fantastic cd, one that I have listened to many many times without growing tired of it. The particularly nice thing about this cd for lovers of the movie is that you get to hear the entire performance for many songs which are necessarily cut short in the film, most enjoyably "A Wandring Minstrel I". As has been noted in other reviews, the vocal performances are not what you will typically find in other G & S recordings: they are far less burdened with mannered belle canto nonsense, to their immense benefit. And I must disagree with one reviewer who disparaged the staging as portrayed in the film. My wife and I saw a touring production of the Mikado which used the costumes and set from the movie, and it was fantastic. Even better, the performers seemed to take some cues from the film actors too, singing and performing in a way that was much more accessible and not a bit less pleasing.

4 out of 5 stars Better than many a G&S non-sountrack.......2003-09-16

I was compelled to get this after seeing the overlong, flawed, but nonetheless all-around amazing 'Topsy Turvy'. (Seriously - almost every supporting actor in the film deserved an Oscar, and Jim Broadbent was robbed; his Gilbert is magnificent and real.)
Inspired then to hear a true G&S performance, I bought several Carte recordings. What broke my heart is that the genuine Savoy performances are not as good as those of the 'Topsy' actors! Contrary to a review here, the articulation is just dandy. And the tenor in 'Wand'ring Minstrel' alone is far, far superior to the thin, reedy, annoying versions on the several concert cds I've heard. As is the riveting soprano on the beautiful 'The Sun Whose Rays...' of 'Topsy'; again, the actual Savoy recordings are merely shrill in comparison.
I remove one star only because of the necessarily abbreviated performances here.

5 out of 5 stars Put on the CD, close your eyes and..........2003-03-02

You are back in the Savoy Theater in Victorian England, watching a Gilbert and Sullivan production of the Mikado, or Yeoman of the Guard, or the Sorcerer, or Princess Ida. The qualiity of the music is superb, the voices are wonderful and I only wish I could have videos of all the G&S productions to watch along with the music.

Buy the DVD of Topsy-Turvy if you don't already own it. It's magnificent. See my other review.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

This record is a masterpiece. Every song begs to be listened to again and again. The instrumentation perfectly enhances Ned's tremendous voice. Shine Like A Diamond On Me is a gem, the lyrics painting a picture of lonliness. I Stole is a great sing along than any working man can identify with. The growth from Circus Liquor to iStole shows what a talented song writer and musician Ned is. The world needs to take notice of this sadly underrated fretless wizard!

Album Description

"Voyage To Afghanistan" is a weird and wonderful little masterpiece. Lyrically it never fails to entertain with little twists and clues, almost like the "12 Monkeys" or "Fight Club" of CDs. Musically its kinda like the Beatles meet Radiohead,Lou Reed and Bowie in a bar and they get the bartender to sing. What I really love about this CD is the layers. On top, the songs fly by beautifully and sound great, but if you wanna go deeper there is a plethora of incredible images and tie-ins. Dig In, "Voyage" is a very satisfying meal.

5 out of 5 stars Underground music for Overground dwellers.......2006-03-24

some stats: 'Voyage To Afghanistan' (1995-97) 13 tracks TT= 55:06
(printed lyrics included)

It's hard to pidgeonhole this cd. Suffice to say that it is very accessable underground rock-pop, with a strong emphasis on the lyrical storysongs of Abraham Cloud (AC). The whole cd feels like a very independent effort, singular, homespun and homegrown (yes,THAT kinda homegrown).

'AC's vocal delivery is reminiscent of a lower-registered Bowie or Lennon, sung in a scruffy, fuzzy and loose (but not sloppy) way. His perceptions project a certain "stoner certified attitude" which propel the various lyrics in engaging, witty and socially sharp observations of Living in general...and life in southern California specifically (the locals will make the references anyway).

The music has all kinds of twists and turns in it making it interesting throughout. Seven of the 13 tracks are preformed with his band (drums, bass, lead guitar), the remaining 6 has AC doing all the wizardry including some sophisticated electronics. These "solo" tracks are the the most idiosyncratic and "psyched".

As I stated earlier, this is VERY accessable 'Underground' music by an artist with a singular vision that FEELS good, complete, and easy-going. It is not hyped, obtuse, contrived or high-brow genius.

Abraham Cloud's music has a rocking groove throughout, and still manages to include threads of folk, pop, and even chamber music. Never pretentious or "obscured by cloud"...it's the perfect bong-load. Just right.

5 out of 5 stars Sgt. Pepper Revisited.......2000-06-06

The feelings I get listening to this Cd is John Lennon if he had lived and went through another very creative period. Its very entertaining and story oriented, and each song is its own little "trip."

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary singer.......2006-04-03

I first became aware of vocalist Johnny Hartman through his work with John Coltrane. Since then, I have purchased two of his CDs, both of which are exemplary. Hartman possesses a smooth, rich, expressive baritone. In the case of so many singers, it sounds a bit too grand to refer to their voice as their "instrument." In Hartman's case, it is simply a fact. Every track on this disc is a gem. Buy it.
