John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V).......2007-06-21
product: Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V), included as bonus disc in Episode III soundtrack.
The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.
With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21
The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.
My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."
Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.
Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20
There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.
Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.
Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!
A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07
This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.
Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01
Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

Robert Redford's fable of a cynical, young, white war veteran (Matt Damon) learning the perfect golf swing--and the meanings of life--from a mysterious black caddy (Will Smith) is typically rich in subtexts, from racial discrimination to armchair existential philosophy. As she did for the period dramaThe Cider House Rules, English composer Rachel Portman imbues Vance with an American sense of time and place. Bookended by the bluesy jazz of Fats Waller, Mugsy Spanier, and Duke Ellington, Portman's elegant orchestral score is rich in powerful brass and string-driven melody and emotional nuances. Portman once again displays a strong affinity for the plaintive resolve and emotionally longing colors of Aaron Copland's most familiar works, and there are moments here that subtly evoke passages of that composer's Lincoln Portrait. It's a fine irony of modern film that one of Copland's spiritual heirs and most effective practitioners of his essentially male American musical ethos is a soft-spoken Englishwoman. --Jerry McCulley

A soundtrack as wonderful as the movie!.......2005-08-17
When I first saw the picture, the music was one of the two bigger impacts it had on me (cinematography being the other). I had one of those experiences where as soon as the credits were finished I was already planning on purchasing the soundtrack. Problem is the average CD store did not hold it. Lucky for all of us there is Amazon.com!
The music composed by Rachel Portman is nothing short of wonderful! Very American in its orchestration and has often reminded me of the score to JFK (John Williams) & The Natural (Randy Newman/ironically another Redford film). From the scenes where Damon's on the golf course and the camera performs its classic Hitchcock maneuver, to the humorous driving sound as Theron's character takes on the city councilmen, this score proves to be one that must be cherished by all movie music goers.
This is a soundtrack that can inspire people with imagination and heighten the experience of outdoor activities. I myself have played this score while hiking back home and it has performed beautifully. When I play this in my free time it has allowed me to drift away from troubles and distress.
As for the tracks that aren't Portman's composition, they are equally enjoyable. The sound of Muggsy Spanier, Ellington, & Fats Waller are just pure boogie, woogie, oogie know what I mean? Makes you wanna swing.
It's a good soundtrack, one that I am lucky to have in my horde. If you can get it, I highly recommend it.
Why is this soundtrack so hard to find?.......2004-02-18
It goes without saying that a good score can either brilliantly enhance or possibly downright destroy a movie. With the film "The Legend of Bagger Vance" you have a beautiful story accented by beautiful scenery and beautiful period sets and costumes. Anything less than a beautiful score could lessen the appeal and, ultimately, the certain quality that could make this good movie great. Rachel Portman has developed a reputation for making okay movies unforgettable. Any less of a score could have ruined "The Cider House Rules" or even more so "Chocolat". Ms. Portman's score is a perfect example of how image and sound should come together to create something beautiful. In addition to the evocative and nostalgic opening fanfare-like theme, Ms. Portman welds together at least three other prominent themes, as well as a virtual abundance of recurring motifs. But, unlike her recent score CD for "The Human Stain", this album contains a much more varied mix of music that, most times, leaves the listener simply wanting more, but at the same time feeling totally satisfied. Unfortunately, if this review has successfully whet your appetite for this album, all you have to do now is find a copy for a reasonable amount of money. This soundtrack is highly reccommended, but good luck finding it.
The Legend of Bagger Vance.......2003-02-20
Great soundtrack, very relaxing and emotional. Very pleased with the cd music, but disappointed in what I had to pay for it. Also, the seller represented it as NEW and it was not. It had been resealed!
This soundtrack was worthy of an oscar........2002-11-07
When I saw this film I remember thinking, "what an extraordinary soundtrack" and I immediately went out and got the cd. And now a few years later it almost always is in my cd player. I love, love, love soundtracks and this is a homerun to me. I don't remember what the competititon was for the oscars that year but I wish it would have won. I don't even remember if it got a nomination. If you like Randy Newman's work, Aaron Copeland and maybe Hans Zimmer, you will like this cd. She did a really wonderful job. I wish I knew more about the composer.
This is my favorite CD.......2001-11-04
I purchased this CD to find a music selection for my daughter's skating routine. I had previously purchased "Cider House Rules" soundtrack and thoroughly enjoyed it, so we purchased this after listening to the samples on Amazon.com. This soundtrack has to be the best one I have heard! I watched the movie after I had listened to the CD, and I must say that Rachel Portman's music brings the movie to a whole new emotional level. I, too, wonder why this was not nominated for an Oscar. Rachel Portman has that special gift to communicate through her music. I look forward to purchasing more of her works.

What's more unlikely than gritty cult director Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk til Dawn) directing a kid-oriented mainstream action film and seeing it top the box office? How about an orchestral musical score credited to no fewer than six film composers, not to mention the director and his brother--and did we mention Los Lobos? But what might have easily been a case of too many cooks turns out to be a loopy, suitably lighthearted romp. John Debney, Danny Elfman, Chris Boardman, Gavin Greenaway, Heitor Pereira, and Harry Gregson Williams are credited--individually and in various collaborations--along with Rodriguez and brother Marcel (and some crucial supervisory help from Hans Zimmer) with a soundtrack of short, to-the-point cues that largely send up hoary action and spy film clichés. The acoustic guitar stylings of Los Lobos highlight "Spy Wedding," while the L.A. vets crank their amps for the riff-heavy "Oye Como Spy," an off-the-wall reworking of the Tito Puente standard. Danny Elfman also contributes "Floop's Song (Cruel World)," a show song earnestly sung by film heavy Alan Cumming and sounding for all the world like an outtake from the composer's cherished "Nightmare Before Christmas." Pass the popcorn, please! --Jerry McCulley

Too Many Cooks? NAAH!.......2004-10-28
We went to see this film and at the outset were blown away with this very cool kids film that wasn't a kids film. I remember my dad and I sitting up during the opening when the music went on, turning to each other and nodding. All through the film I kept trying to figure out who wrote the music.
The opening made me think of Harry Gregson-Williams(and I was Right!), but some of the other music didn't sound like his.
When they got into the music for the flashback(track 2) I thought to myself,' Well it sure isn't Elfman!' Boy was I wrong there!
I find it refreshing when composers collaborate on scores because they all approach films differently. Granted they didn't all sit in the same room and throw ideas back and forth, but at the same time all of the different musical ideas form a whole and add to one another rather than detract.
That said, my favorite tracks are smack in the middle; Buddy Pack Escape is probably some of Elfman's best action scoring in a long time, Oye Come Spy is just plain fun and cool, and Elfman's demented Floop Song is just right! The Media Ventures boys contributed pieces that sounded more like Elfman than Elfman's contributions, Debney skillfully bridged the differences in style, and the Director himself came up with some standout pieces, most notably Spy Wedding.
My only complaint is the putrid Song at the end which was there only to appeal to the preteen crowd and makes me want to hurt someone.
WOW!!! :).......2001-06-25
This CD is very Good! My favorite song is Spy Kids (Save the World)!!! I'd recommend this CD to kids of all ages! You should also buy it if you're getting the movie when it comes out!!! ;)
Save the World.......2001-06-16
The group that played the end song Spy Kids (Save the World) is really good. I hope to hear alot more on this band. The name of the Band is Fonda and its out of Los Angelos.
Awesome!.......2001-06-12
This soundtrack has some awesome songs in it and sort of retains that "Mission Impossible" theme. I liked the movie, and I was not disappointed with the soundtrack. I think that the movie was one of the best "starring kids" movies of all time. So, I give this and the movie four stars, and my hat is off to the talent behind it all.
Surprise!.......2001-04-23
While I was browsing the liner notes of this album, I was shocked to see that no less then five artists contributed to this film score, ranging from the hispanic pop group Los Lobos ("La Bamba") to lush film composer Danny Elfman ("Batman, Edward Scissorhands") to the film's director Robert Rodriguez. Usually, the old addage of "too many cooks spoil the soup" comes to mind. With this many people involved, the results are almost guaranteed to be a mess.
Surprise! There's an exception to every rule, and "Spy Kids" is it! Instead of having one person work on each track, each one adds their own strengths over the entire album, making it a wonderfully cohesive whole.
In keeping true to the film's locations, the whole score is tinged with a slight salsa feel, straight out of Buenas Aries, and you can hear that delicate sounding guitar in nearly every track. This is the primary contribution of Lobos, Rodruiguez, and veteran rocker Harry Gregson-Williams ("The Rock").
From there, Elfman and fellow composer John Debney ("SeaQuest DSV") add a lush orchestral tapestry, adding depth to the whole. Indeed, Elfman's trademark dissonance and offbeat percussion are perhaps the biggest thing helping to elevate the music from merely "good" to "great." Elfman is even given his own moment to shine, with "Cruel World," the theme song to the villain's deranged TV show.
The only real dissapointment on the album is the final track, "Spy Kids (Save the World)," a pure pop track with shallow, self-referential lyrics that nearly undermine the fact that it's at least not a boy-band, or a Brittiny wannabe.
Also in the liner notes, Rodriguez states that he wanted to create "... the coolest spy music this side of Bond." I think he and his team have succeeded wonderfully. That it also happens to be for a kid's movie is entirely incidental.

Don't waste your money!.......2007-07-13
I did and at first i was really looking forward to getting it since i ordered it off amazon. i listened to the sample and i thought to myself yeah thats pretty good. but when i recieved it in the mail i put it in my stereo and listened to three or four songs and had to turn it off due to the fact it sounds like every new metal band now a day and had no originality and it wasn't that great. i am a die hard black metal fan. I am all for church burnings and pentagrams everywhere and now i'm getting into the viking style of black metal. I'd reccomend buying Cradle of Filth's Thornography before this and i hate Thornography with every fiber of my being. Stick with Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem, old Dimmu Borgir, Bathory, Graveworm, Kampfar, Naglfar and Leviathan if you are into real black metal!
Great Black Metal from Germany.......2006-08-03
Germany's Agathodaimon raised the bar higher with the 2001 release of Chapter III. This guys are part of the new wave of black metal coming out of Europe along with Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child and Cradle of Filth. What we have with Chapter III is modern black metal and it is finely produced. The 'wall of noise' that Emperor, Darkthrone and Burzum made famous is not present here. This is the black metal of the present and future.
Chapter III stars with a wonderful piece titled 'An Angel's Funeral.' Soft, haunting acoustics start off this song and then vintage black metal shrieks and harsh riffs furiously make their way. 'Spirit Soldier' is a song that may remind the listener of recent Cradle of Filth material. It is one of the longest tracks besides 'Sacred Divinity' which is a beautiful mellow song, more of a ballad. 'Departure' is a great song starting with a symphonic piece, and there are clean vocals and black metal shrieks throughout.
The vocals by Akaias are very well done. He has a great voice for the genre. Santhonys also helps out with vocals and guitar. the keyboards present add to the overall darker mood of the album, but are not symphonic like anything by Dimmu Borgir or Emperor. Fans of modern black metal should appreciate this band. Purist Black metal fans who only listen to older black metal including Darkthrone, old Immortal or Emperor's 'Into the Nightside Eclipse' might not like Chapter III. Agathodaimon have forged into the future of black metal with this great release.
Chapter III.......2005-11-12
Now, coming from a person who loves bands such as Emperor, Gorgoroth, 1349, and Incantation. I really like Agathodaimon! a bit of a hybrid band. With Vlad, in the enormous power vocals he brings, the soft yet serrated songs like past shadows, and sacred divinity this album is very much a one of a kind. And yet the tid bit comparisons to cradle of filth, and dimmu borgir are actually very slim, only the vocals can be pointed out to be in comparison to other bands. Musically this band has extreme talent and can't really be truly compared to any other. I have come back and forth to Agathodaimon through-out the years, and I continue to be impressed with them. Serpents embrace is just diverse as this album is. It can and will be different through other people, but I think this album is great!!
Very Good Black/Gothic Metal.......2005-05-27
I really enjoy listing to this album. It's the only Agathodaimon album that I own and that I've heard. Agathodaimon play a mix of Black, Gothic, and Symphonic Metal. I would put them right along side Septic Flesh, Moonspell and even Tristania. We get Death grunts, Black screeches and even some clean vocals here and there. This album is for people who enjoy Dark Gothic Metal. The music is played at a high level and the production is very good. When they get going Agathodaimon play very fast and tight. Even though this album is very assessable sounding, they still keep it underground enough for me. There's not too much more to say except, Solid release!
Generic Death Metal.......2005-01-19
I can't say I am too fond of this release. Straigh forward Death metal with perhaps a hint of atmosphere but not much. There is isn't really a lot to say but I find a lot of harsh metal albums to be much stronger. If you are into this band purchase but if looking for a starter kit for death metal there are way better releases out there.

On the third and final installment of his 60 Minutes of Funk series, celebrity DJ Funkmaster Flex once again cuts together classic tracks and recent favorites with exclusive freestyle sessions by the biggest names in rap. Flex acts partly as hip-hop editor--smoothly compiling the best and trimming away the rest--and partly as team manager, inspiring top performances from his talented roster. No wonder, then, that Flex's Mix Tape feels like a fast-paced all-star game in which top players take turns getting wild, strutting their stuff, and having fun. With this feast for the short-attention-spanned rap fan, Flex retires from mix tapes while still in top form. As long as rap stays largely a singles genre, though, mix tapes will remain the best value in hip-hop. --Roni Sarig

More Like 60 Minutes of Total Amazement!!!!.......2003-07-03
I can't actually believe the other reviewers on this web page when they say this CD is just OK!!! I think it's absolutely brilliant, consisting of an amazing variety of different styles of hip-hop. If you ever get the chance to buy this album, I strongly suggest you do and you won't regret it. Trust me, I'm a hip-hop expert! A great wide range of artists appear on this album such as; DMX, Busta Rhymes, Cam'Ron, Wu-Tang Clan, Keith Murray & Mos Def. There are also some great apperances from old skool artists such as; House of Pain, Naughty By Nature, Busy-Bee, Slick Rick, KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr & EPMD. The record has some fat scratching on the decks, shoutouts to the artists, excellent freestyling lyrics and great producing from the one and only Funk Flex!! Add this to your collection, as it is much better than the other mixtapes. I'm ghost! :-)
Why so famous?.......2002-01-06
I think that the world has one big question to answer. The question is: Why the hell is Funkmaster Flex so famous. Not only that his scratches aren't anything but a big joke, he isn't able to do any blends or good backspins at all. The tracklist might be interesting when you want stuff everybody listens to or if you were hit on the head a few years before so you aren't capable of understanding lyrics with more than 3 words.
Watch out for DJ A.Vee-Mixtapes but better save your money when you see a Flex-Album in stores unless you like to listen to a dj clearing his throat every two minutes.
Total garbage.......1999-08-27
This dude has zero talent...Don't waste your bucks on this trash
Nuthin' to take seriously, just a mix tape........1999-07-23
A fair showing for the overrated FunkMaster Flex. Could he have used more songs from Wu Tang or Mobb Deep? Geez...I can think of so many dope beats that he left out. This isnt a classic, 'cuz it can't be. I must admit that there are some head-noddin' cuts in there, but you could always buy the actual album that the beats came on. I always enjoy the "Hell on Earth" beat, but havin Erykah Badu over it? Kinda slaughtered the song. The decent head-nodders:
KRS-One over Instrumental. The inst. isnt spectacular, but KRS can flow over any beat
Mos Def over Instrumental. Mos Def is one of my favorites, and the beat was dope and fun.
Common over LA Times. Common rhymes superior on every cut he does, and this Xzibit beat wasnt too bad.
King Sun over Its Yourz. King Sun isnt anything special, just another WU descendant. Its Yourz has a dope beat though.
That S%*t peformed by Q-Tip & JD of SV. Just a relaxed song. Decent lyrics, decent beat.
Erykah Badu over Hell on Earth. Just cuz of the tight beat.
Shimmy Shimmy Ya performed by ODB. A hilarious song, makes me laugh every time. Good song, not to take seriously.
Jump Around performed by House of Pain. One of the best party songs ever. Gets me jumpin' everytime.
OPP peformed by Naughty by Nature. Decent song. A good addition.
Note: Flex missed too many dope emcees on the three installments of the mix tape. Someone should do one with all the underground, dope, talented emcees, and forget about adding Noreaga, DMX or Jay-Z on a mix tape. You should be able to rhyme to make it onto a decent mix tape.
Good Freestyles and slammin' beats for the Jeep.......1998-09-01
This album is very good. I bought the previous installment ofFunkmaster Flex's 60 minutes... trilogy. This album mostly sounds like 50 rappers rapping over Mobb Deep's "Hell On Earth" album and Wu-Tang Forever's LP. Volume 2 had a little more variety as far as music is concerned. I liked the freestyles. My favorites on this album are the ominously funky track by Mariah Carey Featuring The League , Missy Elliott's surreal freestyle, Shaquille O'Neal & Sonja Blade's freestyle was very lovely (especially Sonja's), Wu-Tang Cream Team (Raekwon kicks some phat rhymes), A Tribe Called Quest and JD of Slum Village and Erykah Badu's were my favorites. If you are a Wu-Tang or Mobb Deep fan I would recommend this album, if you like New York Hip Hop then this is an album for you.

It's hardly rare for a rock or pop musician to try their hand at film scoring. But, perhaps because of the medium's minefield of time constraints, business pressures, and elevated artistic expectations, only a relative few have made the transition to full-time scoring. Dream Academy founder Nick Laird-Clowes has not only survived the journey, he's arguably elevated both his art and the medium in the process. This evocative score is a deceptively seamless fusion of his distinctive pop sensibility and a moody, mature orchestral sense that belies the musician's one-hit-wonder, Top 40 heritage. His spare use of the acoustic guitar throughout is especially effective. The score also incorporates several tracks by Laird-Clowes's modern pop project, Trashmonk, as well as some atmospheric work by longtime critics' darlings Yo La Tengo and the brooding, atmospheric modern jazz-tinged work of Woodrow Wilson Jackson III and Petra Haden (daughter of jazz great Charlie Haden). --Jerry McCulley

This has 2 tracks by YLT found nowhere else. "Weather Shy" is stunning--a very warm-sounding Krautrock-esque mood-maker with the always lovely vocals of Georgia Hubley.

Product Description
"I'm standing at the side of the stage of a new theater in the recently established Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles. A lone figure is on stage telling a story. The audience is transfixed. My attention is rivetted on the actor speaking with a western drawl. He is painting pictures of a dusty desert with stampeding cattle and frozen jack rabbits where time has stopped. All too soon the pictures melt to form a final ending to this mystical yarn and I am back at the side of the stage, changed forever. I have been touched by the storyteller." - Geoff Levin

Celestial Navigations III - Ice will warm you up!.......2003-06-03
Being a fan of Celtic music, one day I wandered through the local B&N (sorry Amazon) and found this treasure hidden between utterly mediocre music. I took it home, slipped it into the CD Player and was immediately dismayed because it was storytelling. I nearly changed it into a coaster for my nightcap, but was disuaded by an act of caprice.
Six months later I was in my apartment looking at some moderately boring work that needed doing, and wondering how I was going to survive it when my roving eye caught this disk sticking out of the pile of unused CDs in the corner. For the fun of it, I put it on.
It didn't take long for me to realize what an error I had made half a year ago. The haunting title track takes your breath away. The Back Porch will tighten most throats with its beauty and simplicity. The bonus track (be warned) is randy, but hilarious. The prude in me (and I am quite the prude) couldn't decide whether to blush or belly-laugh. In between these three tracks are stories that will tickle your fancy, touch your heart, or stroke your funny bone. To be sure, I described this album to my boss as one performed by "Libertarian Rednecks." Whatever. Regardless, you will enjoy this marvelous treat. Pick it up today!
affected for life!!.......2001-12-30
This is something a friend played for me on a tape in 1993.. I haven't heard it since then until now however, this work actually affected my life profoundly..How many times can you say that about a story? Thank god for the internet or I would have never found it again. The story "Back Porch" has inspired me through many "moments" of my life. The "Intervention" is so visual and humorous, It's very much like having a movie in your head..The music, especially in the last cut, is moving and brings these stories to life in a way that emerses me into the world in the story and never fully lets go!!
A great collection of stories.......2001-01-31
Celestial Navigations: ICE Chapter III is a great collection of stories....which continues the rich tradition of the first two installments. The fusion of music and story-telling is in top form on this CD. War Babies, Rock and Roll are great tracks...the narratives and music paint a great picture...perfect for listening on a long commute....The track ICE is haunting.... the music and script will transport you to a bleak and forbidding place.....don't be suprised if you get a chill listening to this track....

Customer Reviews:
I searched for one song -- and found a treasure!.......2004-04-30
I originally bought this CD because it has all three verses of a German children's song called "Alle Voegel sind schon da" (All the Birds Are Here") that I wanted to teach to a German language class. An Amazon search by song title turned up this album. The sample excerpt sounded nice and the pronunciation was clear -- so I bought it. I had no idea what the rest of the album would be like, because I had not seen the documentary. Was I in for a pleasant surprise!
In addition to "Alle Voegel," there are several other German children's songs, as well as a happy little medley of Polish songs that I particularly like. I can't understand a word of Polish, but I enjoy the sound of their music. There are also several original orchestral pieces composed and conducted by Lee Holdridge. Some of these are pretty sombre pieces (""Gathering Darkness" and "Last Good-byes") that make for heavy listening, while others express the joy of homecoming ("Celebration" and "A Place to Belong.") All of it is fine music.
One the technical end, the CD comes with liner notes that include translations of all the songs, as well as some interesting background material by producer Deborah Oppenheimer, composer Lee Holdridge, and sound designer Gary Rydstrom.

Good For What It Was: A Crossover Soundtrack.......2004-08-05
This compilation of music from the motion picture Kelly's Heroes was a historical hybrid -- it was the very first non-musical, dramatic movie soundtrack to combine dull background music from the film with catchy songs added to the film which have nothing to do with the plot. Many earlier attempts at dramatic-movie sound tracks were absolute failures -- really, who wants to hear the tuneless background violin music being played when a couple of characters are hiking through the woods? Later movie sound tracks, such as Pretty Woman, Grosse Point Blank and Urban Cowboy, contain catchy popular songs only -- songs having nothing to do with the plot -- with none of that incidental background music (that no one cares about). The Kelly's Heroes album was the first to start the process of bridging those genres, a genuine pioneer effort at movie sound-track presentation. It's worth the price purely for its historical value.
car cruis'n music.......2002-10-08
One does not have to see the movie 'Kelly's Heroes' to enjoy this fusion of jazz and honkey tonk rapped in an early seventies spirit of freedom. Just pop it in and listen to Hank Williams Jr. croon for his new found Love in a troubled world; the Mike Curb Congrgation singing about lost innocence of a man in the late 60's due to the establishment conflicts of the time. Its inteligently campy at times with a down right feel for the psych-drama of the working world with a touch of Ennio Morricone influence; you know the guy who scored 'The Good The Bad and The Ugly'. On the flip side 'The Cincinnati Kid' there's Ray Chrarles singing a song about the world of gambeling while the rest of the jazz music is accompanied with orchastrated strings. Good soulful stuff. Get it for your car today!!
"Kelly's" portion of this soundtrack was less than heroic........2001-08-17
I bought this CD for the Kelly's Heroes portion. I've seen this movie more times than I can count and I really like the music. I had been searching Amazon.com for probably a year or so only to be informed after each search that this particular soundtrack didn't exist. When finally my search came back positive I couldn't wait to buy it. When I received it though it fell well below my expectations. "Burning Bridges" by the Mike Curb Congregation is good of course but much of the other music is definitely not the original music that I hear every time I see this movie. Much of it is way too jazzed up for me. For example; the track on this CD from the scene where Kelly, Big Joe, and Oddball march showdown style towards the lone German tank crew guarding the bank in the center of town has some pretty jazzy guitar on it that I just don't seem to hear whenever I catch this movie. Thats just one example. When it comes to soundtracts I like to hear what I heard in the movie. At best the Kelley's Heroes portion of this CD can be filed under the category "Something is better than nothing". In my opinion, if you absolutely have to have the music from Kelly's Heroes thats about all you can expect from this CD. If all you are looking for is the "Burning Bridges" song you can buy it cheaper simply by searching for "The Mike Curb Congregation" on Amazon.com.
