3 out of 5 stars "Solid" rock........2005-11-27

It's really hard not to like a band called The Atomic Bitchwax, who also has some of the best album covers in history. Oh, and this disc will rock your socks off as well. "Atomic Bitchwax II" is like a 45 minute buzz. I like it more than "Spit Blood", though they're roughly the same stuff. Picking a favorite track would be hard, but "Smokescreen" is awesome, and hey, lyrics are overrated anyway. "The Cloning Chamber" is a trip too. I hesitate to say this band is better than Kyuss or Monster Magnet, but it is the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Old-School Hard-Rock Throwdown.......2004-12-22

This is the way that hard rock should sound. This is the kind of work that people produced before incompetence became the favored musical path. It's good to know that there are bands like this out there.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet follow-up album........2004-11-08

I don't care about solos or anything else but fun when I listen to music, and quite honestly I had some of the most honest-to-God fun with this album, more so than with any album in the past 10 years, save of course TAB's first album. An excellent CD, best songs (in my own opinion) are Liquor Queen and Fourty-Five. Solid rock songs.

2 out of 5 stars What Happened To The Solo's?!?.......2001-08-10

The First atomic album was amazing, quite litterally the best album i've ever heard, and i had high hopes for this one as well, but i was failed.... what happened to the solo's that made the first album so great? The solo's set them apart from all of the other rock bands in their genere, hopefull they'll figure this out and do more in the next album

5 out of 5 stars As Good As The Name Implies..........2001-06-17

I spent 5 years waiting for something to improve on Kyuss, and I finally found it. I love my Monster Magnet, and I hope Ed never leaves them, but the Bitchwax is a level beyond anything else. Where M.M. is bombastic and grabs you by the balls, the Bitchwax gets under your skin and pulls you along. The guitars, bass, and drums are always going, always evolving their rhythm. There is no formula for this kind of music - you never know where it's going to go - but as long as it stays in that groove, you don't care. Occasionally, it has vocals. And the vocals are the primary difference between Bitchwax I and II - the vocals on II are a little less distorted. If only kids could listen to this stuff instead of what MTV feeds them.

Album Description

The Atomic Bitchwax, long relegated to and written off as stoner rock, have come into their own. In 2005, fresh off the heels of their appropriately titled third full-length, 3, the band hit the road hard. The drama surrounding the departure of guitarist Ed Mundell (also of Monster Magnet) was long behind them, and for the lineup of Keith Ackerman (drums), Chris Kosnik (bass, vocals), and former Core frontman Finn Ryan (guitar, vocals) the future looked great. So this is where the bus flips, right? Wrong. The chronicle of The Bitchwax goes up, down, up and further up. The future actually was great. MTV was demanding dozens of songs to score two new speed Ã"n chaos-based shows, Homewrecker and Fast Inc., Ween's side-band The Moistboyz was calling with tour offers, and rock guru extraordinaire Jack Endino (Nirvana, Nebula, Soundgarden, Mudhoney) stepped forward and said, "Hey, you guys rock, let's put it to tape." So in the middle of touring behind 3, the trio hit the brakes in Seattle to record four brand new, Endino-fied studio tracks plus a raucous live set at Seattle's Sunset Tavern. Boxriff captures everything that makes The Atomic Bitchwax one of the planet's most criminally underrated rock bands. Catchy hooks, classic riffs, the airtight interplay of Kosnik and Ackerman's rhythms, Ryan's jazz-inspired interludes and solos, it's all right there. And in transcending stoner rock's simplistic limits, they've taken the initiative to prove to their audience that over the years and even with the 1/3 lineup change, The Bitchwax have lost none of their edge, live or in the studio. From the ripping lead that opens "STD," to the epic fuzz dirge that closes "Kiss The Sun," straight through to the live sing-along reinterpretation of fan favorite "Birth To The Earth" and the video document to prove it all, this is a band letting the world know that they're more than on top of their gameÉnot that they needed to say it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-09

Huge fan of this band and the DVD is great. Nothing fancy, just small stage and great crowd. Hope to see more from these guys soon. A must for the garage rock or stoner rock crowd.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad wee album.......2006-11-21

I've been a fan of ABW for quite a while now.. Awesome riffs, and spacey solos accompanied by crashing drums and killer bass..

The new songs aren't the best I must admit, but the 13 or so live tracks, truly give you the feel of what they sound like live, which aint bad.

If I have one complaint it's that they haven't changed up the songs (they're pretty much the same as they aappear on the previous albums) unlike Fu Manchu in Go for IT live who have re-jigged afew of their tunes to give them a fresh feel.

They're playing in front of a bunch of yokles from Hicksville, Alabama who are painfully loud at times, but all in all, this album would go dwon well with any fan of The Bitchwaxs's riffs.. Also, features is a bonus DVD of the live show. Don't expect bells, whistles or fireworks. This is pretty much stand and deliver stuff.. But cool nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Riffs on parade.......2006-12-01

Maybe most of Bitchwax fans are Ed's dieharders, but I must say Finn has indeed more sense of song writting and constructing melodies over riffs. Ed is more like a "jam free MC5 reckless life guitar player" and a little bit of discipline does good to anyone's ears.

This album is very thrilling, starts with the blockbuster "the destroyer" and so it goes, a modern approach of good old 70's hard rock style.

Besides all that boring split talk stuff, "the passenger" is my favorite track; after all, who can resist some handclaps and a slight voice box effect over the song?

Do not expect a timeless masterpiece; instead, a nice rock record just for fun listening in your car, driving down somewhere in this planet.

4.5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Fill the space with fuzz........2006-09-13

Ok so Ed Mundell (Monster Magnet fame) left the band and is replaced with Finn. That makes for a slighty different band, slightly different sound, but rocks all the same. I actually like it because the change has given the band some new life. There's tighter songs and more singing, but the playing is still tops. I hesitate to say it's better than past albums, but it's still atomic. The bottom line is that it's a must. What other band name and artwork is gonna make your friends think your this cool?

3 out of 5 stars A New Band..........2005-11-08

When I heard the news that Ed Mundell had been replaced by Finn Ryan I was worried that Bitchwax was all but finished. When I heard the demos for "Dark Chi" and "Going Guido", I was convinced even further. But when I bought the album and gave it an honest listen, I was relieved that the band still has some signs of life. Ed was the most talented force behind The Atomic Bitchwax, but even in his absense the band's sound is still great, even if it fails to live up to the classic Bitchwax standards. Gone are the heavy riff-driven jams, but with Finn we have a whole new band that is making some increadible rock music, even if it lacks the edge that Ed brought.

Although I do like the album, I must say I was very dissapointed. One obvious fact is the presence of only ONE instrumental track. If you're used to the long jams and instrumental interplay from albums past, forget it. With Finn on board, the songs are short and vocal-driven (Usually by Finn. Chris sings very little this time around). You won't hear the band jamming together very much either; the songs average about 3 minutes each. Finn's guitar solos and verses are the focal point of the album, Keith and Chris seem to stand aside with less presence than before, but their playing is still very strong even if it only backs the guitars. When it comes down to it, this 38 minute album is a new sound from an entirely new band.

But like I said, I do enjoy this album a great deal, just in a different way than I enjoy The old Bitchwax. And what Bitchwax album would be complete without a classic rock cover? The highlight of this album for me was their version of Deep Purple's "Maybe I'm a Leo". As far as covers go, it's no "Crazed Fandango", but it does make this album a lot more enjoyable.

One small fact that needs pointing out is the rediculous, amateur CD production from Meteor City. You will notice that several of the CDs track times are miss-matched with the music! Track 2, for instance, starts 4 seconds before "The Destroyer" is finished. If the music get's 3 stars, the actual packaging get's 1.

You can break it down any way you like. Some people are going to hate that Ed is gone (Note the blatant attack in "The Passenger"), others will be pleased with Finn's playing. Personally I think Ed was miles above Finn's playing, but the new Bitchwax has tapped into a whole new kind of energy: one that fails to rival the Bitchwax of old, but still stands above a lot of other music right now. I think Bitchwax is one of the best bands going right now, and 3 is a step in the right direction. It's no Atomic Bitchwax I or II, it's no "The Hustle is On", but it's damn good.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best power-trios in all of heavy rock.......2005-09-11

I wasn't all that familiar with Atomic Bitchwax when Ed Mundell was in the band, but I was a big fan of Finn Ryan's previous band, Core. I have to admit, I haven't even heard the entire CD (only samples of it), but I recently saw them play live the other night (and I'm pretty sure they played at least half of the songs from this CD). man, they were absolutely incredible. to say that they rocked the house would be an understatement. they have got to be truly one of the greatest power-trios in all of rock. each member is a master of their instrument, and can play the hell out of it. pure, blues/boogie, heavy, space-rock. don't call them stoner-rock. they are way beyond this label. if you are a fan of Queens Of The Stone Age, Monster Magnet, Clutch, and any of Wino's bands (Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Hidden Hand), then you NEED this CD... bad.

5 out of 5 stars the best rock record in years.............2005-09-11

I gotta come clean: I was really skeptical about the continued viability of the New Jersey power trio the Atomic Bitchwax once it lost guitar god Ed Mundell completely to his day job in Monster Magnet. 3 proves my lack of faith disturbing. Former Core leader Finn Ryan fills Mundell's shoes quite ably, providing not only the prerequisite hot solos and molten riffage, but also his soulful voice as well. Bassist Chris Kosnik and drummer Keith Ackerman respond to the new blood by sounding more inspired than they have since...well, ever. Inspired riffs flow as like beer, Kosnik hits new peaks as both singer and writer and the energy level could light up all of Hoboken. "Dark Chi," "Going Guido" and "You Oughta Know" smoke like a forest fire. "The Passenger" slays, despite an annoying electronic vocal filter; the snarky libretto both shakes its head sadly at Mundell's departure and gives him the finger on the way out. "Half As Much" throws the rules out the window for an almost avant-garde take on the whole cosmic stoner rock thing. <3> is going to be the riffmonster to beat this year; Queens of the Stone Age rocks like this only in their dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Ed Mundell uses those guitar skills........2006-07-14

What initially brought me to this band was Ed Mundell, one of the great guitar gods of space/stoner rock. And I was right to be. Plenty of excellent instrumentals and solos on this album. The vocals are quite decent as well (whenever they come around). The whole album is extremely enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars It hurts me to say this is nothing special........2005-12-23

I listened to the cd with an open mind. It didn't and will not do anything "cosmic" for me. It's an okay cd...some cool rifts, some decent lyrics, but there is a lot missing. This cd sounds very much like the Foo Fighters experimenting with cosmic rock. Again..there are some grooves that will leave some head-bangers nodding..but I feel those of us who were raised on the late 60's and early 70's have bounced a lot of these same tunes in our head while getting ready for work, or sitting on the can waiting to get away from work. ABW's cd "3" has a much stronger and aggressive sound, but still sounds like a band that is trying too hard to relate with a people and a cause. Cosmic rock needs to be swirled, tasted, tested, swished and swashed like a wine full of unique flavors. This group and cd may be labled eccentric, but sad to say it is not.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it rocks!.......2005-09-09

I don't get the 2 and 3 star reviews. One guy doesn't like the jams and riffage. He wants more straight forward songs. Please, these guys rock out, jam and the riffs are just awesome. Buy this, and you'll see. It's too bad bands like this never get any air play, but crap like the white stripes and these bands like coldplay sell millions.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected from the reviews I read.......2004-11-17

This album is not as great as everyone would have you believe. 5 stars? C'mon. It's good, it's rockin', it's groovy and all that but, the album kind of sounds like one long song to me. My favorites were the straight ahead, simpler rockin' tunes. Some of the tunes get a little too "jammy" and kind of don't go anywhere or sound a little too classic rock. They even attempt to blatantly rip off Santana on one tune. Would be better if a little heavier.

5 out of 5 stars This cd FLAT OUT ROCKS!!!.......2004-03-31

You've heard the phrase that "good music never goes out of style". Well, this cd just flat out rocks like a tidal wave. Thank God for the return of the guitar solo. Where has it been hiding in recent years? You don't hear it much in today's so-called "new rock" genre. This band is hard rock, metal, jazz and funk with a boost of high octane 104 jet fuel. I stumbled upon this cd in a Border's bookstore (of all places) in their headphone listening section for new music. Being a long time fan of metal and hard rock I found this to be a jem. For more incredible guitar solos check out BLS's latest "The Blessed Hellride" and Iron Maiden's "Dance of Death". Up the irons!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Bloody good........2004-03-07

This disc is pretty sweet. It's just good simple metal/stoner-rock. It definitely reminds me of "Kyuss", and is mostly of the same quality. The cover of "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" is a good one, but that and "Black Trans-Am" are the only songs with vocals. The rest is just rockin' and groovin'. This is good stuff for a disc of extra's, so I assume their other albums rock as well. The bonus disc here is of other bands. Decent, but no big deal. Great cover art too, even though it's not shown here. Check this out if you're into "Queens Of The Stoneage", etc.

5 out of 5 stars Far Out Man!.......2002-08-26

As stated by another reviewer this album is a collection of b-sides and unreleased material but it smokes nonetheless.........especially the cover of the classic AC/DC song "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap". However before getting "Spit Blood" I would strongly suggest checking out their first self-titled album and their second album "II" you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Groovey + Heavy = Bitchwax.......2002-05-26

Spit Blood seems to be more of a B-side type album... but don't get me wrong, it still rocks. AB's first two cds are a little better than this one but if you're a fan you will not be dissapointed. I loved "Black TransAM". Bout time somebody writes songs about "guy stuff". These guys are amazing musicians and they show that off on all of their albums. If you're not familiar with this band, they are a 90% instrumental group with vocals here and there. The guitar work is just down right...well...ATOMIC. Read some other reviews for a more detailed description of their sound because most of them are right on the money. Even if you don't like this style of music, you had better admit that these guys are some of the best musicians around today. Just check out some of the solos on their first cd and you will know were I'm coming from. SABBATH LIVES ON!!!!!
