EMI's "society" subscription editions in the 1930s yielded a wealth of recordings long considered gramophone classics, such as the present collection of roughly half of Hugo Wolf's lieder output. Each song occupies its own specific world, due to Wolf's resourceful word setting and his avoidance of anything generic. In turn, the performers illuminate each song's felicities with effortless authority, and they avoid overpointing or enacting. Full texts and translations are included. Ernest Newman's penetrating annotations for the original 78 albums, reprinted in EMI's 1981 LP reissue, are absent. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
The Hugo Wolf Society Recordings.......2005-12-28
The songs of Hugo Wolf (1860 -- 1903)combine great attention to textual detail with closely intertwined writing for the voice and the piano. In this small form, Wolf was a master and took song in a different direction from that of Schubert, Schumann and Brahms. He wrote most of his songs in bursts of activity in five large collections, devoted to the poetry of Morike, Eichendorff, Goethe, and to collections of Spanish and Italian texts. He also composed a number of songs in shorter sets.
In the early 1930s, a young Walter Legge began a project of recording Wolf songs on a subscribtion basis to be limited to 500 sets. The recording industry was relatively new, and Wolf, then as now, too little appreciated. The result was an extensive series of recordings of issued between 1931 and 1938 consisting of 145 songs, about one-half Wolf's output, performed by fourteen singers. The Hugo Wolf Society recordings remain a high moment in the recording of song. They were remastered on LPs and, in 1998, in this 5 CD collection which includes previously unreleased selections.
The Wolf Society collection offers an unparalleled opportunity to get to know Wolf's songs performed by artists of the past that might otherwise be unfamiliar to many listeners. The performers include mezzo-soprano Elena Gerhardt, who recorded the initial volume for the society, baritones Herbert Janssen, Gerhard Husch, tenors John McCormack, Karl Erb, and Helge Roswaenge, the basses Alexander Kipnis, Frederich Schorr, and Ludwig Weber, and sopranos Alexandra Trianti, Elizabeth Rethberg, Ria Ginster, Marta Fuchs, and Tiana Lemnitz. The pianists include Conrad Bos, Gerald Moore, Michael Raucheisen, Hans Udo Muller, and Ernest Victor Wolff.
The singers perform in a variety of styles from the highly operatic to the quietly lyrical. There is a Wagnerian performance of Goethe's "Prometheus" by Friedrich Schorr with the London Symphony Orchestra -- the only track using an orchestral accompaniment. The Irish tenor John McCormack shows a more lyrical approach in his renowned performance of Goethe's poem "Ganymed". The sopranos, Alexandra Trianti, Ria Ginster, and Tiana Lemitz have light, clear, bell-like voices. I find the singers on this compilation take a much more individualized, idiosyncratic, and romantic approach to song than do their modern counterparts, who sometimes seem restrained and chaste by comparison.
Each of Wolf's great collections of songs is well-represented. Elena Gerhardt performs songs from each of Wolf's five books, with the exception of the Goethe songs. The young Alexander Kipnis gives a powerful reading of Wolf's three songs from Michaelangelo. The third CD in this collection features many songs from the Italian songbook performed by soprano Ginster, baritone Husch, and bass Kipnis together with recordings from the Spanish songbook by sopranos Rethberg and Ginster and baritone Husch. There are lovely performances by soprano Tiana Lemnitz in the previously uncollected supplementary material, which also includes several Eichendorff songs and a performance of the Goethe-song "Phanomen" by Alexander Kipnis.
There is a great amount of material in this collection, with each of the 5 CDs including in excess of 70 minutes of music. Most of Wolf's songs are highly concentrated and intense. They may prove difficult to the listener coming to them knowing only the lyricism of Schubert. I would not recommend trying to rush through this set at one or two hearings. It is best to take this music in small sections and to listen with text in hand. The compilation includes texts and translations for each of the songs together with good notes about the Wolf Society recording project. There is little discussion about Wolf or about the songs themselves.
This is an essential collection for those who love song, historical recordings, and the music of Hugo Wolf.

"Even little things can delight us.".......2003-06-02
If these six words give an approximate translation of the song "Auch kleine Dinge", then they might also describe a music lover's reaction as he makes a journey of exploration through the hundreds of little songs composed by Hugo Wolf.
Walter Legge, a very young EMI record producer in the 1930s, first made such a journey possible when he pioneered the Hugo Wolf Society and began releasing the volumes now reissued in this boxed set. Many singers were invited to participate. Legge's choice of singers was sometimes idiosyncratic. You might wonder how an Irish tenor, a Ukrainian bass and a Greek soprano were admitted to the roster. The results, however, especially in the case of the contributions of John McCormack and Alexander Kipnis, prove the sureness of his instincts.
About half Wolf's songs were made available in the original issue, between 1931 and 1938. With this reissue comes unused and hitherto unissued recordings, many by Tiana Lemnitz and Herbert Jannsen. So there is now more to discover and exploration is made easier for us in 2003 than it was in the 1930s. The remastering has improved the sound, Legge's widow Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is able to provide a perceptive introduction in an accompanying booklet, and the texts of the songs are now provided in German and English.

Wolf sung by various Lieder singers.......2000-08-15
This is an extraordinary collection of Wolf songs. It is frustrating that the project was not completed, as the quality of what was recorded is so extraordinarily revelatory. My personal favourites are the Michelangelo settings sung by the bass Alexander Kipnis, although he uncharacteristically makes some textual errors. The contributions of Hüsch are numerous and thoughtfully sung, and Karl Erb, Herbert Janssen, Ludwig Weber, Rita Ginster and Marta Fuchs are all caught on extraordinary form, with accompanists of admittedly variable quality, ranging from the sublime Gerald Moore to some very interesting contributions from some accompanists who did not really capture the true essence of Lieder accompanying, which surely cannot permit the piano to be subservient to the voice!
These precious recordings offer us so much. They are a document of a golden age of Lieder singing, and they are superb recitals, sung by a variety of voices, never allowing the listener to tire of listening to a single voice for too long. They are also, of course, examples of some of the most wonderful Lieder writing of any time. These 5 cds are a must for a Lieder specialist, and can open new doors to the novice. Buy them, and never regret having this treasure trove which will give you pleasure all your life.

As charming, learned and intelligent as she is, Hendricks has never been a particularly exciting singer, preferring to maintain a certain interpretive mid-distance from the music. Not so here. In this diverse collection of songs dedicated to her teacher, the great recitalist Jennie Tourel, Hendricks's singing takes on a specificity and vitality rarely heard from her. The program includes four Liszt songs, three Chanson de Bilitis by Debussy, some of Dvorak's gypsy songs and five selections by Rachmaninoff. -- David Patrick Stearns

Customer Reviews:
so you call yourself a metal-head..........2005-04-19
if you have never heard voivod, and your tastes run towards the power metal/progressive metal subgenres, this album will most surely satisfy.
if you are already a voivod fan,but dissed this when it first came out because they "sold-out",well you need to re-evaluate.
this album is,in a word,incredible
Different approach for Voivod, but still good.......2005-03-28
I'd been hesitant to venture beyond "Dimension Hatross" for a long time, but I got "Nothingface" a few years ago and loved it. Now I found Angel Rat for a low price and thought I'd give it a shot. Just as Nothingface, as good as it is, lost some of the heaviness from the previous albums, Angel loses just about all the heaviness that was left on Nothingface. This being said, Angel is still a cool album. Voivod fans have come to expect certain things from the band: spacey lyrics, driving riffs, and odd time changes. These styles continue on Angel, but it's more of a 'rock' album than anything else. Denis' vocals sound different than any of the previous albums, but not in a bad way. An album certainly worth adding to your Voivod collection.
Masterful.......2004-05-26
While not as progged-out as _Nothingface_ or the follow-up _The Outer Limits_, one has to think that if Voivod is one of metal's great undiscovered pleasures then this is their most underrated moment. This album is a masterpiece of colorful neo-psychadelic textures and magnificent musical economy. Songs like the majestic and cosmic "Clouds In My House", the space-age "Nuage Fractal" and especially the stunning title track show Voivod approaching Rush through Pink Floyd's eyes. Piggy's (guitarist Denis D'Amour) riffing is simply masterful on this album and wholly original, retaining elements of Alex Lifeson, the glissando guitar of Steve Hillage and the jagged chording of Robert Fripp. Not to be outdone, drummer Michael Langevin kicks up a storm on "Best Regards" while Snake (lead vocalist Denis Belanger) turns in a suprisingly melodic and restrained performance, while leading a lyrical shift away from the typical "Adventures of the Voivod" style of writing; Hard-driving bassist Jean-Yves Theriault - despite leaving the band almost immediately after the album's release and only getting a studio musician credit - still makes his presence felt on "The Golem." Although the complexity of the songwriting has been toned down just a bit here there are still surprising twists and turns in each of the songs, perhaps most exhibited by the psychadelic interlude in "Twin Dummy". Possibly stung by the poor commercial reception for this album, only the hard-driving "The Prow" still remains a live staple for the band today. Not enough bands make such thoughtful, textured music like this anymore. All in all, an excellent and unfortunately out-of-print album that is well worth hunting down.

An unusual album.......2003-09-24
All of Voivods albums are amazing in their own way. What I like about them, is that no matter where the "tide" is musically, they always manage to create unique sounding music. This album is a sonic landscape of sounds and riffs that really leave the listener wondering what the hell was it that he just heard. Tracks like "Twin Dummy" ," Angel Rat", "Clouds in my House" and "Panorama" are so unique that I wouldnt know what to compare it to, yet they are some of the most amazing songs I have ever heard. The sound is "dreamy", I literally loose all sense of time when I hear the whole album. If you have never heard Voivod, this is not the place to begin. "Nothing Face" or even "Voivod" their album with ex Metallica Jason Newstead, are good albums to start the Voivod experience, but if you want to hear unique heavy metal, get this album.

Underrated Classic From An Underappreciated Band.......2007-02-05
Voivod's unique and strange brand of science-fiction-tinged progressive rock/metal has never really clicked with the mainstream. Their willingness to experiment, rather bizarre lyrical tendencies, and a hybrid sound drawing from disparate styles and genres of music have all been a hindrance to their acceptance, but I think most Voivod fans, myself included, wouldn't have it any other way. Despite all that, some of their albums are quite catchy, and would certainly appeal to a wider audience; "Angel Rat" is certainly proof of that.
Full of catchy, pop-inflected vocals, driving rock guitar, and melodic bass lines, this album is the sort of music the casual lister would enjoy, but closer scrutiny from fans of prog will reveal intricate and unorthodox song structures, creative and artistic use of effects, clever chord voicings and experimental textures, and surreal, twilight-zone lyrical content. An amazing and approachable album which has lost none of it's appeal over the years for me; this is the best place for someone who has never heard Voivod to start...not as avant-garde or heavy as "Dimension Hatross", which is usually considered Voivod's "best" album, but the beginning of their flirtation with a more accessible yet experimental prog-rock style for a band who constantly reinvents themselves. An obscure triumph. This band has always been ahead of their time...
Bridges the gap between old & new Voivod.......2006-08-11
Voivod's ANGEL RAT is a 1991 album that was sadly overlooked at the time of its release...It was produced by Terry Brown, who has worked w/ Rush. The album bridges the gap in between the thrash metal Voivod of the eighties & the "mature" sound that the band carried into the nineties & beyond.
At the time of its release, ANGEL RAT saw the band carrying on as a three-piece machine, w/ Denis "Snake" Belanger/Vox, Denis "Piggy" D'Amour (R.I.P.)/Guitar/Keyboards, and Michel "Away" Langevin/Drums. Although Voivod was without the services of Jean-Yves "Blacky" Theriault (Bass), the album still maintains a full sound throughout.
ANGEL RAT continues the band's musical direction that was put forth on NOTHINGFACE (1989). Musically, this album is somewhere in between metal & prog. rock. Standout tracks include "Clouds In My House," "Golem," & "None Of The Above." Lyrically, this album dabbles in the Sci/Fi genre w/ abstract words painted over esoteric layered guitars.
Check this album out!! Get lost inside it!! It can be purchased for a few bucks (used), so it's worth the trip!!
Also, check out Voivod's "Nothingface" & "Outer Limits," which are both musically & lyrically similar in style.
The Sleeper in Voivod's Canon.......2006-06-01
Every bit as good as "Nothingface" and "Dimension Hatross", "Angel Rat" got lost in the shuffle for no good reason. While they'd always straddled the border between thrash metal and progressive rock, this was the album where they veered furthest into the prog region. Many of their fans weren't ready for this direction at the time (myself included). But hindsight has vindicated this album, artistically if not commercially. It is the band's loss and your gain that this album can usually be found in the cutout bin. Timeless.
Amazing Prog Metal album.......2005-10-02
This album is amazing.
Denis DÁmour didn't leave the band. He, tragically, passed away from colon cancer. He wil be sadly missed.
