Bizarro hair metal gone real bad...........2006-07-05
This isn't the sort of release you'd normally expect to see rates as hair metal but in terms of chops and a lot of it's sentiments that's exactly the genre this release sits well in. I mean songs about sex, a song called Schools for Fools, songs with bucketloads of swearing and then a few more songs about sex. All topped off with some tunes about who knows what!
Ultimately a disposable bunch of heroes basically comprising three musicians and the inimitable Stanley on vocals - allegedly a street bum dude the guys sort of found and nurtured. Don't believe that gimmick? Hey that's OK cos nobody else did either.
Whatever the story is with Stanley the guy had a deep, resonant voice equally at home delivering low register crooning or gargled wailing. Both aspects of his voice get a decent workout on this release where his vox are backed up by sturdy riffing that's actually almost wasted on what is ultimately a joke of a release that ended up selling fine due to it's weirdness. The music is actually fairly fast paced and lively and the band are certainly solid in the wall of sound they create.
Main gripes would be the fact that the genuinely good tunes are few and far between. And the insipid pre teen sentiments of some of the tracks are only funny for about two listens before your praising the people who invented CD's as your so happy for the skip button.
A hard release to knock given that these guys couldn't possibly have been serious. The intention seems to have been a weird sort of late 80's metal implosion and that has certainly been achieved here, the sense of chaos not diminishing throughout. What this band could of achieved had they been more serious is shown by the excellent melodies married to the crunching riffis of some tracks, particularly tracks 6 and 9.
Pick up cheap as a curio if you need a laugh. Or want to shake your head at what could have been with a bit more of a serious approach to proceedings.
A very strong 3 stars, but due to it's wackiness and childish moments I can only give it the 3.
Not a very well known band. But still a kick-ass album!.......2005-07-02
This is Punk-Metal at it's best. It's too bad they never were understood by either the hair-band or grunge fans.
The vocals are gonna make the decision for you........2005-02-25
This album really grows on you, once you get used to Stanley's vocals. He kinda sounds Leon Redbone (the guy who did the Mr. Belvedere theme song, remember it?) a bit (especially on the opening Blue Velvet Moon) but once you get into the meat of the album, you realize his vocals actually complement the very modern 90's production and themes of this album. The band tackles all the usual subjects (sex, drugs and rock and roll) but adds a slightly demented twist (again, mostly via Stanley). The big boost to all this is the extremly talented band, who run rings around most bands of this genre. The band had quite an underground following and seemed poised on the blink of stardom, but something happened. Timing may have been an issue, because even though they were a novelty of sorts, their sound was definitly that of a hair metal band circa 1992, and that genre was beginning it's decline and fall. One year later grunge had basically wiped the floor of most of the prominent hair bands, and LSD probably fell through the cracks. Which is unfortunate because they seemed to have much more to offer than most of those bands. If you like harder hair bands like Ratt or Kick Axe, check these guys out.
Life Sex & Death - 'The Silent Majority' (Warner Brothers).......2005-02-06
I give it 3 1/2 stars.'The Silent Majority' was apparently this band's sole release. Some who remember this group would likely think they're a bit strange.Pretty much because of their mentally-challenged lead vocalist(who rarely showers)- 'Stanley'.Heard that he often has conversations with himself. When I first heard this disc,I was decently impressed with just how good most,if not all the fourteen cuts actually turned out to be.More or less just well written&played uptempo rock 'n roll.Tracks that had me pulling out the CD repeated times were "School's For Fools",the kick-ass "Tank"(anyone remember the video for this song?),"F**kin' Sh** Ass","Big Black Bush" and "Hey Buddy".Wanted to mention that I got to see the band play at a club, that drew maybe thirty people that night.I remember running into 'Stanley' before the show.He is creepy!!Don't think he's faking it either.About half way through their set,I was standing smack dead center in the front of the stage. What does 'Stanley' do?Start running his right hand through my hair.Ugh!!Music here is worth while just the same.
No idea how to label it.......2004-10-23
I'm going my cd collection looking for an oldie but goodie, and what jumps into my hand, LS&D. Its been about 8 years since I last listened, and I get one of those snarling smiles like I just did something illegal. This is one of those cd's you can NOT put your finger on in any way. Is it really this good, or is it really this bad? Is Stanley for real, or just a stage prop? Did drugs and alcohol play a major part, or was part of the mystique?
I sat through the entire cd and wondered WTF were the people in the studio wondering..lol. It doesnt really matter, because this is one helluva cd. It's fast, yet slow. Its subtle, and inyourface. Its loud, yet calming. Its shocking, yet graceful. It also has one of THE best metal guitar songs (IMHO) of all time in Telephone Call (this is one song you must hear if your into metal).
Anyway, its a keeper, and I'll probably put it away for another few years.. but I know its always there!

FOSTERCHILD RAWKS.......2007-06-27
FOSTERCHILD's newest (originally heard on their myspace page)
is even better than their first.
The drummer, originally from the band 'Fuel', seems to have found some new boys to play with that rock just as much.
I would like to say that I saw them, but I actually only heard them last year (2006) at the Sterling Hotel in Allentown PA. The place was too packed to actually get into the 'seeing' part of the venue, so I just listened.
Personally, I think their new stuff is reminiscent of the 2nd Audioslave release, in the effect that I felt that I was back listening to Bad Company and Led Zep influences with Audioslave. (Even Paul Simon which was kinda freaky). When I heard the newest FOSTERCHILD, I closed my eyes and thought I sensed it eeked a bit of Beatles and a bit of some of the better 80ies hair bands (as they are now termed). Anyway...I think it's obvious FOSTERCHILD has been influenced by several genres of musical styles. Who knows if that influence is anything like what I heard.
That's what I like. It seems most people end up listening, in their older years, to the music that they grew up with. Makes me wonder what the kids today will listen to in their 40ies and 50ies. (kinda scarey to think about)
Unfortunately, (for the mass market) they (FOSTERCHILD) seems to be quite content laying low in the surrounding Lehigh Valley Area and as my now deceased brother-in-law would say, being a 'bar band'. hehehe. I know better. You gotta start somewhere and it's lucky that so much good music in the past century has come from this part of PA, including +LIVE+ and Fuel. I guess it's good that when one great group of musicians break apart for whatever reason, they end up forming two really great yet separate entitys to listen to. It all started with Days of the New...loving them....then kapow....we had Tantric. Same great quality, yet so much more to listen to.
My pic is from the night at the Sterling, and I do believe I also saw them somewhere else, just can't think right now. I'm a little disappointed that they are not still selling the Tank T shirt I bought that night cause I know one of these days I'm gonna be doing a clorox load (of laundry) and splash it. It's my favorite T, although very Harley-ish, it's extremely comfortable and long. (I guess the corporate world will get ya somehow...in terms of record labels, designs, writing songs, merchandising, yatta yatta) So, pick this up while their still in their new and raw stage.
On another note, their look is rather 'rough' on promotional stuff I have seen lately, but when I talked to them after their show that night, they really were very nice, down to earth (? did I just say that).....uhm....ok.....good folks to talk to is what I meant. LOL.
So....give a listen if you like any of the other music I mentioned. Or go to their space on that space site.
And another note.....friends of mine are doing an Independent Film and when talking to my friend that's involved in that he mentioned FOSTERCHILD might be doing one of their songs in it. I hope that gels. I love that. I remember when that sort of commercialism was frowned upon in the rock arena. Yet, it tickles me when I'm sitting around watching a stupid Chick Flik (Love & Sex) and +Live+ starts playing, or I see a commercial for Special K cereal and Collective Soul is playing that they too are feeling better now. (Especially because Dean Roland is wearing the jewelry I designed in their HOME video....done in Altanta, Ga with the Atlanta YOUTH Symphony Orchestra.)
I digress, my ATD (attention to detail) took over....sorry to ramble but I wanted to be the first to review. peach out.......suzannesuzannadanna

Ouch; hot damn: no one compares to hardcore act's Long Island's Silent Majority. They are the soul son of a once rich scene that had meaning. It still is rich but you have to dig through some crap to get to the good stuff. Check out his current band Blood Red too.

keep hope alive.......2003-09-22
daryl from glassjaw actually was in this band at one point, before they ever recorded though. he does backup vocals on life of a spectator, and he also bit tommys style like a rabid dog.
anyway, this is a good ep, and a great band, but if you've never heard SM pick up "Life Of A Spectator" or "Based On A True Story" before you listen to this. the songs on this album are a little different and sound kind of unfinished in comparison to their early stuff. "amityville horror" is the standout track. also check out BLOOD RED, the singer's new band. peace.
Actually, actually............2003-09-15
No one from glassjaw was ever in this band. The singer's name was Tommy...
Actually..........2003-08-02
The last guy reviewing this probably already knew but this IS Daryl from Glassjaw's band.
damn perfect melodic hardcore.......2000-10-11
Flawless and amazing. The new EP by Long Islands Silent Majority is by far their most accomplished release. With power and melody combined, every tune is a delight to the ears. Stand out tracks are.......well........every single song! There aint a bad tune here. If bands like Glassjaw, Avail and Lifetime make your day then get this! It's a must own CD.....and plus, the band have split up so i guess its a fitting end. Long live SILENT MAJORITY!

Straight up Rock and Roll, Ahead of it's time!!!.......2007-02-03
This album has got to be one of the best little known albums of the early 1990's. Released in 1992, this was the only major lable, and actually the only album released by this band. They had some slight success getting 2 of theirs songs into Bevis and Butthead episodes (Tank and School's For Fools), these guys were quickly lost into the background for the full "seattle" sound. The band featured Stanley (Chris Stann) - Vocals Alex Kane -Guitar / Backing Vocals Bill E Gar - Bass / Backing Vocals Brian Michael Horak - Drums and had a sound that was not quite like anything else. In fact, usually stated to be ahead of their time.
This album has a ton of hooks and songs to chant too and get you blood pumping and the crowd going. Faster songs like We're here now, Jawhol A**Hole, Train , Big Black Bush, and Tank are mixed into slower songs like Guatemala, Rise Above, and Hey Buddy. About every other song is a slow song, and done from ballad to almost country folk like. Very grass roots. This is just a wall to wall pleasure to listen to, and worth any investment to pick this album up now. I own this on CD and Tape now, and I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Élan took me by surprise. Think of Boards of Canada meet modern jazz. That is the closest reference point I can draw for you. I believe this band is from the Denver CO area. Deluge of Sound tracks is a short (40 minutes or so) CD that covers quite a range of musical styling. The pieces are well and thought out performed. I think that there are not very many people that have heard of this band yet, which is why it is selling rather inexpensively at the time of this writing. Lots of electronics intermixed with standard rhythm section sounds. In keeping with an `NPR' type of collage of textual sounds, Élan Fits right in with my BOC, Autechre, John Scofield and Jim Rydl, music variety of tastes. Wonderful spin!
