5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Blown Away.......2007-04-07

I've had Mudvaynes cd LD 50 in my folder for almost five years and ive never listened to it. I purchased this cd before even hearing LD 50. I found out that LD 50 was ruined, so I couldnt listen to it. I got this cd a few days ago and I cant stop listening to it. The cd is almost like Stone Sours first cd. Chad Gray has a excellent voice and im very happy that I bought this cd. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent under-rated band, MUDYAYNE.......2007-03-05

I caught these guys at a small club date in Austin,Texas, several months after the release of this CD. I'm pretty jaded, I hear so many good bands in Austin, so I definitely had a wait and see attitude. MAN! This band was VERY good live. I soon went and picked up a copy of this CD and have since become a devotee. I fully recommend to all to get a copy, and then branch out into their other CD's. As a musician and recording artist, I say "Hat's Off" with much flourish and flair.
Take the time to get into this band.

4 out of 5 stars I Still Enjoy This.......2007-01-31

Mudvayne is a band that would always spark my attention. The band may not be "tr00 m3t4l", and they may have radio play, but I seriously don't care. This is the last album by them that tends to have a semi-progressive feel to it, and this is what tends to get me into this album so much. "World So Cold" is definitely my favorite song, but it's a shame that the media had to butcher it so much for radio play. It's a memorable ballad that will stick in your head. "Not Falling" has a definite progressive nature to it, and "Silenced" is an energetic song.

Overall, I recommend this album to anyone who can keep an open mind and actually care about music. It's not as great as "L.D. 50", but it will still ring in your head for years to come, like it has to me.

5 out of 5 stars It is simple.......2006-06-16

All I have to say for persons wanting to check out this album is simply listen to "Perversion of a Truth" from start to finish. If that doesnt blow your mind, I dont know what will. Coming from a guy who listens anywhere from Sade to Outkast to Megadeth

5 out of 5 stars The End Of Things To Come ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-24

Another album that blew me away after the continuation of The Beggining Of All Things To End. However though,The End Of All Things To Come defeats the 2nd album as others would say but its still a good album. Anyways, the song "Not Falling" was the original theme song for the horror flick "Ghost Ship" until I quickly noticed that Mudvaynes new album was listed & quickly bought me a copy & man did I get hooked with this album. Other critics say that this album surpasses L.D. 50 & may be true & definately surpassed TBOATTE. I also have Lost & Found, that 4th album rocks as well, a continuation from TEOATTC, GET ALL 4 MUDVAYNE ALBUMS, NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Dual Disc at it's best.......2006-02-08

I agree with the other reviewer Mudvayne 5.1 = heaven, well it's true, this one was done very well, sounds amazing. If you have a 6 channel system or above get this. I think this is Mudvaynes best album, nothing can touch it, it's pure, raw and full on hardcore passion, if you got a decent system hooked up, crank this and it is like heaven, sounds much different then the stereo version, adds a whole new world to it.

    5 out of 5 stars Mudvayne 5.1 = heaven.......2005-05-23

just a quick review of this dualdisc.

Like most people i cant get the cd side to work in my normal dvd player but WHO CARES as the dvd is in 5.1 .

Cant wait for the day when they decide to finally put LD50 on 5.1 .

Extra features arnt that great as i have them on another dvd anyway but good for people who havnt seen them before.

Extra info for anyone who needs it , You dont need a dvd audio player to play the advanced resolution sound. As long as your player has the 5.1 descret channels your set. i lernt that the hard way so i took my dvd audio player back and will stick to my 50 buck dvd player.

    3 out of 5 stars They're Nu Metal.......2005-04-16

And most Nu Metal bands I absolutaly hate. However, this is one acception that is worthy of my cd case. I reccomend this album for whenever you're looking for quick and effective "cheap thrills"

    4 out of 5 stars Definately worth a listen.......2005-04-07

This CD was pretty damn explosive from the beginning, however many of the songs aren't as diverse as I would have wanted from Mudvayne. Great CD however, definately pick this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Mudvayne is the Best Artist in Existence.......2004-11-12

If you actually listen to music that has conviction and meaning this is the perfect set. Mudvayne is by far the most inriguing powerful band to ever hit this planet. No band has the stage presents the most awesome, beautiful artistic ability of MUDVAYNE.

1 out of 5 stars One of today's most overrated Metal bands.......2004-11-04

I bought this CD without a clue of what they sounded like. Yes I know, bad move on my part. I had heard the hype about these guys at my school, some of my friends said they were good, and that the bassist was amazing. Well I went out, spent 18 bucks, and popped it into the CD player. Now I'll admit this, I did like the first 3 tracks to some degree. Especially Trapped in the wake of a Dream (the bass really stands out there). But after that I became bored really fast, and really annoyed. These guys are not as good as people say they are and are definitely a good example of radio metal. I realize might get slammed for saying that but I'll take the risk. The DVD doesn't help either. What we have is the ridding mountain bikes, playing in the studio (they screw up a lot), 2 of them eating dinner, and 2 useless songs, that basically play and force you to look at one picture of them throughout the whole thing. They belong as bonus tracks to the CD, not on the DVD. Listening to the CD, I can't help but feel bored and feel the need to place something else in the CD player. These guys failed in grabbing my attention and are very overrated. Don't give into the Hype like I did. I plan to sell this thing and at least get half of my money back. Hope this helped.

4 out of 5 stars The Asbestosis of Metal Without the Dying.......2004-01-10

What? Weird title? KISS IT! Asbestosis is a condition that is caused from inhaling the fine dust given off from asbestos, and it is very deadly, and it can kill you. Now, take the inhaling of fine dust part, and apply firmly to Mudvayne. These Illinois-based cruisers first came to me in the form of a L(ethal) D(osage) (haha, a pun!), and now, I think this should've been the theme album for Y2K, but they were just too late.

If it sounds like I am reaming this album, then just turn around now and go look up someone else's album. I will say, this album isn't superior to L.D. 50, but it is equal. Mudvayne takes a page from Tool in evolving their music to a purified form, then shoving it down your throat. That is the only comparison you will get in this review, so deal.

OK, the music, right? "Silenced" is a great kickoff for the album, yes, I can agree on that. However, it does get to the point where you wanna skip that song because the real adventure starts with being "Trapped in the Wake of a Dream". I was quite hyperactive when I was able to get my first taste of this album from their website before it came out, because "Not Falling" and "Key to Nothing" were, excuse my French, F***ING INCREDIBLE!!! It's a good thing these guys are not only original, but continue to be original. This album delivers just as much speed, bass, distortion, and movement as the prior two. There are a few changes in the music, and for the better in many cases. Chad's vocal capabilities are expressed in this album tenfold in comparison to past efforts. Can you possibly get better than listening to those progressions from subtle to ferocious? Only if you listen from beginning to end. The drums are more sporadic and complex. The guitars are beautifully blended with that lovely bass. Everything about this album is well thought out, and you can tell from watching the bonus DVD.

Standout tracks? God, I hate having to pick out certain ones. Well, if you want to sample the songs, then I would look out for "Per(version) of a Truth", "The Patient Mental", "Key to Nothing", and indefinitely, "Skrying". Everything else is fantastic too, but those are the ones that will give you a good look at what this album is about. The two tracks on the DVD, "Goodbye" and "On The Move", are great as well, but you will understand, upon listening to them, how they didn't fit the scheme of the album.

Therefore, take one free hand, open car door, drive, find, buy, plug in immediately, and cure that cold you have, because Mudvayne will warm up every bone in your body with this other masterpiece from their deep, dark, twisted souls.

If you dig this, I would also recommend:

5 out of 5 stars Music To Get Hyped!.......2007-05-26

This single CD Import comes housed in a slim-line jewel case and has the Radio Edit, Exclusive Rea Garvey track, Radio 1 Live Lounge Session of Maneater and the video for "All Good Things Come To An End". [Bar code 0602517142640].

All Good Things (Come To An End) Radio Edit [4:23] has the slower sounding tempos; deep felt lyrics of how good things always come to an end. Nelly's vocals sound crystal clear, deep, and listener friendly. There is guitar, and melodic beats that are laid back and emotional vs. the other dance style singles.

All Good Things (Come To An End) Feat. Rea Garvey From Reamonn [3:56] has similarities to the previous track yet Rea Garvey 's vocals are distinctly heard in a very hint like fashion. His voice has a very pleasant sound very romantic, soothing, and even Jamaican or Caribbean if you listen carefully. The combination of Nelly and Rea make this a nicer feeling as you picture more romance, love, and how it ends.

Maneater (Radio 1 Live Lounge Session) [3:01] opens with Nelly's vocals in a higher pitch, a guitar being played and much singing with very little music in the background. If you want to hear an excellent rich quality sound with a lounge style effect this will definitely do it. While the previous track had a low keyed style this one picks up the pace and brings life back. This is the song to put loud, sing along, and teach your guy or lover.

      4 out of 5 stars Good sound!.......2005-09-28

The vocals are awesome and the energy they put in every song is great...
You should get the Explicit Lyrics version, but if you didn't or don't want to it doesn't matter at all, because is about the music not the bad words.

1 out of 5 stars Your all Posers.......2004-11-21

If you get Edited Cd's then your a bunch of posers who are too gentle and childish to get the real crap. Do me a favor and go back and listen to N'sync or Backstreet Boys your mommys will let you get that. Bye

1 out of 5 stars Edited crap sucks.......2004-10-26

you guys who all bought the edited version of mudvayne are posers. THE REAL VERSION OF METAL IS PARENTAL ADVISORY. IT IS LIKE LISTENING TO SLIPKNOT EDITED WHICH RUINS THE CD. if you want the REAL the end of all things to come get the parental advisory one.

      5 out of 5 stars Mud - men - metallers are back...........2003-05-29

This is perfect. No song, no album, no artist is better than Mudvayne's END OF ALL THINGS TO COME. This is twice as different as LD.50...
...and twice as good. If you're into Mudvayne or really heavy metal, I AM SURE YOU WILL LOOOOOOOOVE THIS!!...Chud's vocals and lyrics are more intellectual and more sensible than it's prequel, Guug's guitaring is awsome, Ru-d's bass is alot btter than LD.50, and Spug's drumming is more crazy and blinding.I have put thought into this and brung you my own review of the songs:

SILENCED - 9/10 - Incredible start to the album. Crazy and weird - just what I'd expect.
TRAPED IN THE WAKE OF A DREAM - 10/10 - Brilliant lyrics, awsome chorus and the solo is at least three different things. Well done!
NOT FALLING - 10/10 - Brilliant single. Explosive and thoughtful.Chorus is amazing.
      (PER)VERSION OF A TRUTH - 9/10 - Nice chorus and overall brilliant.
MERCY, SEVERITY - 10/10 - brilliant verse guitar and exellent solo with an angry chorus. Good.

WORLD SO COLD - 10/10 - ballad at start, cool aggressive chorus, strange solo but blinding song.
THE PATIENT MENTAL - 8/10 - Overall pretty good song with a decent chorus.
SKRYING - 9/10 - Wonderful song. Different from all the rest, brill lyrics, Nice chorus.
SOLVE ET COAGULA - 9/10 - Explosive and crazy. Strange name.
SHADOW OF A MAN - 20/10 - Best song in the world. Greatest chorus I have ever heard. Verses are cool, and solo is fascinating. Completely covered my brain. The best reason to buy the album.
      12:97:24:99 - N/A - 11 seconds of nothing. I would never thought of that.
THE END OF ALL THINGS TO COME - 10/10 - fastest in the album. Strong, offensive lyrics, guitar bit too simple for GUUG.
A KEY TO NOTHING - 9/10 - Amazing finish to the best album to date. Could be a little more heavy. Well done!

Can you see the ratings I gave for each song? This is the best metal album up to date. LD.50 was good, but I've forgotten all about it. Buy it. I did, and it was the best decision I've ever made.
