wonderful.......2007-07-22
These CD's were wonderful. When I drive in the Sierra Nevada mountians I want something peaceful but not boring. I love, love, love it.
Repackaged New Year's Concert 1984 with VPO, etc........2005-02-23
If I'm not mistaken, most of the pieces were recorded originally live during a 1984 New Year's Concert conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic playing in its grand concert hall, the Musikverein. Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic have had a longstanding relationship dating from the 1960's, and without question, this CD does rank among my favorite New Year's Concert performances (However, the most mesmerizing ones I've heard have been those with the late Carlos Kleiber and Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.) for the superb quality of the Vienna Philharmonic's playing. Maazel leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works composed by the Strauss family, most notably Johann II Strauss' Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Pizzicato Polka, Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March, which traditionally closes out the annual New Year's Concert. Fans of the Strauss family, Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, will not be disappointed with this excellent two CD compilation.
I am glad I bought this one.......2003-04-25
I listen to this cd to relax and it is so soothing. It starts with The blue Danube, which is my favorite. But the rest of the songs do not disapoint.
Great Music as usual.......2002-10-08
This is great recording,
I enjoy listening to it
veru much. This is a
compilation of all the
favorite waltzes by
the Strauss family, that
one might hear at a
New Year's eve concert
of the Vienna Philharmonic...
All waltzes and Polkas are
favorites of audiences everywhere
in the world...
A gem!.......2001-10-29
Who else knows Strauss better than Viennese? I attest that no other orchestra in the world plays Strauss better than the Vienna Philharmonic. Their light sound is exactly what the composer wanted, and it really makes other clumsy, heavy attempts by some other orchestras like Berlin and Chicago seem pathetic.
As far as the content of these CDs go, they are fantastic. They have every waltz, march, and polko of Strauss II that you could possibly want, as well as a nice addition of "Radetzky March" by the composer's father. If you are looking for a Johann Strauss Jr. CD, get this one!

Bela Fleck is one of the greatest five-string banjo players performing today. Beginning in the 1970s, he honed his lightning-fast chops performing bluegrass, then moved on to contemporary jazz and fusion sounds. With this album, he broadens his horizons once again by performing an entire program of classical music transcriptions. Reminiscent of classical guitar albums by John Williams (who makes a guest appearance here), the disc traverses a wide range of repertoire--from Chopin mazurkas to Bach's Two and Three Part Inventions. Throughout, Fleck displays a feathery touch on his banjo, and his instrument offers a pleasant, brassy tone with very little twang. The technique he displays on Perpetual Motion is astounding and a refreshing change of pace from the smooth grooves found on the banjoist's Flecktones recordings. The arrangements are generally minimalist and understated, but violinist Joshua Bell, bassist Edgar Meyer, mandolinist Chris Thile, and percussionist Evelyn Glennie join in on this groundbreaking disc. Bluegrass purists may be disappointed (this is a far cry from the free-spirited, folksy abandon found on Sony's Short Trip Home and Appalachian Journey CDs), but classical fans will be astounded by how perfectly natural Fleck's banjo sounds on these works. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Amazing and beautiful.......2007-01-02
Fleck's 2001 disc `Perpetual Motion' is by far his most ambitious foray into virtuosity, performing classical works by Bach, Scarlatti and Chopin.
And he does it without really showing off. He only tackles mazurkas, fugues and Bach classical inventions on the five-string banjo, a simple instrument for which this music was never conceived.
I once flirted with playing the banjo, and it wasn't an easy task, even trying to play 'Uncle Pen'.
But the man must be possessed to play it like Bela does. Alternating between delicate and complicated, slow to fast, Fleck gets about as much out of the humble banjo as anyone possibly could. He plays it precisely and with a light touch, with respect for the music and his instrument.
Some reviewers think it pretentious of Fleck to attempt a banjo foray into the classical genre. That's bunk. How is virtuosity measured, after all? By playing many genres: classical, bluegrass, pop, jazz, Indian, fusion. And by playing them well.
Fleck wasn't awarded a Grammy for this recording just by looking pretty. He earned it.
Another Bela Fleck Masterpiece!.......2006-09-17
Who knew there could be classical banjo. It may sound dumb to some of you, but Bela Fleck pulls it off perfectly. I prefer the jazz fusion of his work with the Flecktones, but that does not mean this is not brilliant. Technically speaking, Bela and all of his collaborators are the best around, and who can argue with the songwriting of the classical composers(no one openly insults Mozart). If you haven't heard Bela Fleck, here's some advice. Get one of his Flecktones albums if you're into jazz, rock, or funk, this if you like classical, and his Newgrass Revival, Strength in Numbers, or Sam Bush stuff if you're a bluegrass fan.
Definitely a Winner.......2006-07-05
It is apparent to my ears why this CD won a Grammy. It takes familiar classical music pieces and puts the distinct Bela Fleck style on them. The pairing of the banjo with different instruments makes this album texturally interesting for the ear and one does not tire of the selections, even if they are familiar. My favorite pairing is the marimba with the banjo. The liner notes are interesting, as is Bela's story on how difficult it was to make the album. It was definitely worth his time and the listener's .
Soul Food.......2006-01-30
This is exquisite! The best of human experience encoded on a simple CD disk.
AN AMAZING WORK ! ! !.......2005-11-12
I was searching a classical music CD for a long time which is something different.Which consists variety of instruments. Like guitar,violin,banjo,mandolin...for example.Something different and also exiting music. This CD fullfills my wishes. The music like this doesn't come up very often I suppose!
Béla Fleck did a great job by working with people who is masters of their instruments like John Williams etc. This causes the CD to be more joyful. You won't get bored to listen it again and again!
Anyway ,either you are a fan of classical music or not, you won't be dissapointed with this.I guarantee :)

The very, very best Johann Strauss Jr. recordings.......2006-08-14
No orchestra in the world has ever known how to play the waltzes of Johann Strauss Jr. as well as the Wiener Philharmoniker . . . and no conductor has ever led the Philharmoniker in this repertoire in as perfect a Strauss style as Willi Boskovsky (the orchestra's long-time concertmaster). The sine qua non of Strauss playing, the famous Viennese lilting afterbeats (where the second of the three beats of the waltz tempo comes infinitesimally early, rather than in strict time) is here. Tempos perfectly "in the groove" are here. Accept no substitutes: in this repertoire, this combination of performers is the absolute gold standard.

I love pgroove!.......2005-09-25
I just bought this cd about 3 weeks ago, learning from a buddy of mine how awesome they are, and plus they are from my home town of Savannah Georgia, so I knew I had to give it a try. When I got the cd I listened to it all the way, and couldn't stop listening to it for like a week, then I bought tickets to see them on Halloween, and recently just bought their other cd(which is also fab). I am totally excited about seeing them on Halloween I've heard that they are so much more intense live.
Slightly better than Perpetual Yawn.......2005-07-01
With no disrespect to those who wrote positive reviews, I find this release only slightly better than "All This Everything" [...] But hey, at least I enjoyed Teakwood Betz off of this release!
Southern Trance Jam Rock.......2005-04-24
This was the best thing to come out of Georgia in 2003. If you want to get a free taste of what they sound like in a live setting download a free show from the internet archive. Kind of reminds me of early Phish crossed with Micky era Widespread Panic.
Good stuff!.......2005-03-20
This CD is worth every penny, and is sure to please. These guys have come a long way since J.J. Cagneys in Savannah, Georgia! If you ever get a chance to see them live you'll be hooked...
unbelievably powerful.......2005-03-19
I am in shock at the one listener, R. Pinto, that completely dissed this musical masterpiece. I guess there's always one....
Walking in Place is one of the best songs I've ever heard, so powerful, so beautiful. This is one of the most talented bands I know of, and having been blessed to see them live on multiple occasions, I was blown away at their live performances. All of them. And I am going to go back and see them every chance I get. This is one group of talented boys, and I recommend them to anyone who has taste enough to appreciate some good music.

Livelovedie-get blown away.......2007-07-17
Saw these guys at Wakarusa rock fest in June and they just blew me away. They have a sonic range that is rarely heard in a live outdoor show. I bought this cd and would highly advise. Played the sucker three times the first day and it just sticks in my head.
Go Back To The ProgJam Creative "Groove".......2007-04-11
This recent CD is totally disappointing. They lost their "groove" here. Quite frankly, on this new release, they sound like the now faded band from Colorado called "The Samples". They have to decide whether they want to be a very appealing Progressive Jam Band, or just another band with no targeted direction. Sorry, but they missed the boat here, after two very excellent previous releases. Hope their manager gets them back on track!
A treat for your ears and soul.......2007-04-06
What an outstanding effort by these guys. As you listen to each song the range and depth of the songwriting is amazing. Here is a "jamband" that has evolved into a true rock band while retaining the essence of their jamband roots. My favorite tracks are the soulful "Only Always" which talks about that true love that was lost, "It Starts Where It Ends" which talks about life and how we live it and "Two Shores" because the water's so nice!! Treat yourself to something you deserve with LIVELOVEDIE.

A classic shredder album.......2007-04-18
Who needs a song by song review by some schlep? That always kills me.
Bottom line, this is guitar playing at a talent level most will never reach or even relate to. If you like or appreciate rock guitar, this is a must have. Very underrated guitar player, cruelly dealt a bad hand while in his prime. Very deserving of your purchase.
Dweller in the cellar.......2007-02-17
I have never heard anything quite like "Dweller in the cellar" as far as emotional content, I was (of course) Blasting this whole album as loudly as possible in the car the other day and got so caught up in the emotion of this song that I found myself in tears! Probably freaking out the other drivers around me as well.
Like a tragic opera
I can see (hear) the story of this woeful wraith alone with moan, and sorrow locked within this cellar, shrieking, screaming and wailing to be set free, The horror! The fear amplified by the darknress; The anger.
When this beautiful misery ends at the triumphant break, this is where I picture the callar door finally flung open and our sad little wraith is set free, truely joyous and free to run in the sunlight, until the outro, when the mood changes...and our wraith becomes beast seeking only his revenge on those who imprisoned him. Powerful stuff!
One of the shredder classics........2007-01-29
I recently got this for the first time: something I should've owned many moons ago. anyway, so here's a song by song review of this neo-classical shredder "classic" for those who do not yet own this and are just looking for something more about "that Jason Becker guy they saw on you-tube"...
Altitudes: slowish tempo and starts out with some pretty and clean-toned melodic gutiar... breaks into a sweep-picking section followed by a flat/alternate-picking section, both of which are enormously fast, back to some melodic/heavier guitar... then an interesting tapping section, with the stuff in your left ear slightly different and complementary to what's in your right ear: very impressive from a composition standpoint... then what sounds like an improv'ish solo, back into the main theme pretty much until the end. Overall, daunting guitar: the sweep picking and the two-channel tapping pieces are exciting and interesting, but overall the rest of it is, while challenging, just not the most interesting thing around: you've heard it before from YJM, V.Moore, Macalpine, Gilbert, Batio, (etc...) ...would be a great study piece, though. (4/5)
Perpetual Burn: very fast, insane, all over the place, (etc...) but again: you've heard this a million times before from all the various shredders (especially Yngwie), and in general the different sections don't hold together into a cohesive whole all that well... truly mind-boggling from a technical difficulty standpoint, though. (4/5)
Mabel's Fatal Fable: intro is interesting and good at the start of its resolution, but that same resolution takes far too long to resolve... next section is just great though: like some high-octane Paganini or some such - just the sort of stuff you LOVE from a neo-classical shredder: cleanly played and ultra-high speed and very classical feel to it. Beautiful!!! The final outro section is also very interesting and somewhat eerie sounding - this is tied with "Air" for my favorite on the CD. (5/5)
Air: this is sheer brilliance - everything fits nicely together and it's just a thing of sheer beauty... not heavy at all, but that's not a problem to me... dual clean-toned guitars complementing and occcasionally counterpointing each other... (from what I understand, much of it was performed with both parts on just one guitar, but even if that's a rumour, it's still an absolutely brilliant and beautiful composition). No complaints here at all: flawless... this is the one that, regardless of what you hear in the next ten or twenty years, you'll keep coming back to it. All others on this album are, by comparison, expendable. This one is not. Pure genius. (5/5)
Temple of the Absurd: features Marty Friedman and really is a speedy, chunky, shred-fest, as you might expect... a bit loose and uninteresting in terms of composition, though. But not without it's jaw-dropping moments: kinda cool to listen to the two guys in each channel, playing such difficult stuff in perfect unison... but while that's cool and something to bear witness to, unfortunately you won't keep coming back for the music itself... (unless you like freakishly fast chugging on the low strings with Friedman/Becker solos over the top). Marty's solos are actually very interesting: it seems as though Jason is a bit more overtly neo-classical, while Marty possesses something that's distinctly his own "style". Overall: fun with some high points, but a bit forgettable. (3/5)
Eleven Blue Egyptians: eastern sounding until the end resolves with a blues jam... the eastern feel bears some resemblance to Vai's "Fire Garden Suite" (especially if you include Bangkok)... unfortunately for Jason, Vai really puts together a MUCH more interesting composition. On the flip side there is some jaw-dropping going on here, but the blues jam at the end seems disconnected. A lot of people like this but I find it a little disjointed and lacking in composition. It's fun, and is the only spot on the CD where he just bangs out some stuff over a blues rhythm, but I'd rather they just made a single song based thereupon, rather than sticking at the end of an otherwise eastern-sounding thing. (3/5)
Dweller in the Cellar: holds together pretty well: he's going for a spooky vibe here and captures it well, which makes it slightly more interesting than some of the other selections on the CD, but with that said, it isn't THAT interesting, and hold your interest for over six minutes... but if you do manage to last through the first five minutes, you are rewarded with some excellent quality "neo-classical shredding" at the end, which fits the rhythm exceptionally well... I wish the whole song were more like the ending, though. (3/5)
Opus Pocus: much like the first song, but a bit more melodic and interesting while being a bit less stunning... but not without it's jaw-dropping moments, though: there's a sweep-picking section here that's incredible, and overall the composition isn't bad. (4/5)
Overall: 4/5... very good stuff: an early shred-metal classic... this is strikingly similar to Malmsteen's early work... really rips of the fretboard. For good, classic shredding, get this and YJM's Rising Force... you'll get a few songs from each that stay on your play-list for decades to come.
Aside: I question the drums in spots on this CD: in some spots it sounds almost as though the guitar parts were recorded first, and then they had Atma Anur (a very good drummer) listen in headphones a few times and then bang away until they got a decent take... but as good as the guy is, they just don't always sound very fitting or entirely that well thought out... in these days of perfect synchronicity between, say, Portnoy and Petrucci, the drums on here just don't always cut it.
Shred or Dead.......2006-11-03
Virtuosity. To sum this album up in one word. This is composing at its best proving once more that Jason Becker isn't a guitarist, he's a Musician. This is an absolout MUST have for any fan of guitar driven music like shred for example. Forget Yngwie, forget Gilbert, forget Ziras. This is Jason Becker. Difficult to pick out high-lights in such an amazing album, but the song "Perpetual Burn" stands out for me. Harmonies so fantastic, Bach would roll in his grave. Even Becker's old pal Marty stops by to play with him on a few of the tracks such as "Dweller in the Cellar". This is an instrumental CD setting the standard for guitarists all over. I took years trackin this CD down, and here's amazon offering it you for, what will be, the best pennies you have ever spent.
Perpetually Burning.......2006-08-30
Regardless of what anyone else tells about "mindless guitar playing," "wanking," and "non-emotional songs," this album is an essential for anyone with ears. And it's definitely necessary for any guitarist.
Just for a bit of background, Jason had a lot of these songs running through his head back in his early Cacophony days (Check out the Rasberry and Blackberry Jams to find out what I'm talking about). He finally had a chance to write them out and record them with Mike Varney on Shrapnel after Cacophony fell apart. Unfortunately (for us at least), Jason never had a chance to write another all out shred album for us (At least not an album with him manning the guitar) because he was recruited as David Lee Roth's main axe-slinger shortly after releasing the album (Sort of like how Marty was recruited in Megadeth shortly after releasing Dragon's Kiss). But, anyways, now onto the review.
This album is a musical masterpiece, completely instrumental, and full of twisted melodies and 64th note, 6-string sweeps. I love every song on this album, but that's just me. The standout tracks are:
1. Altitudes - The crowd favorite, or so it seems. It's full of emotion and beauty, and it's my belief that this song was Jason's baby. It's a beautiful composition full of amazing melodies and complex guitar licks.
2. Perpetual Burn - The title track, this one is blazing. I wouldn't call it as ripe in melody as Altitudes is, but it's still a great track. The pure speed of the song is enough to impress (Although that's not the only reason to enjoy it).
3. Air - The song that brough Jason into the neo-classical scene. I still don't consider him to be a neo-classical guitarist per se, but I still think this song is a great piece. When I first heard it, I thought it was 2 guitars playing different parts, which is true in a few parts, but for the majority of the song it's just Jason playing 2 parts simultaneously, classical style. It's a great piece, and one heck of a finger twister to play.
4. And last but not least, Eleven Blue Egyptians - Marty's guest solos in this song were enough to make me love it the first time I heard it. In a way, it reminds me of a few Cacophony songs, the heavy riffing and the dual guitars firing off in both channels. It's a great song though, well thought out, and well executed. But the dueling solo between Marty and Jason is really the climax of the song, check it out.
I personally recommend every song on this album, and all of Jason's other works, as well as Marty's, and if you enjoy all of those, look into Cacophony. Just do some digging, if you truly enjoy shred and are a fan of the guitar gods, there's always someone out there who will point you in the right direction.

ProgJam At It's Best!.......2007-04-11
This is a great album from start to finish. They were really into a "Groove" on this well recorded release. It's just too bad that their newest release of 2007 didn't follow up this excellence, as they went instead with an overly written, shorter cuts, which really all sound the same. Guys go back to your roots. Your first 2 albums were excellent... and do remember that "All Is Everything".
Simply Amazing..........2006-06-28
This band is one of the most amazing that I've ever seen live. I went to a concert having no idea who they were or anything, but after the first couple of songs i automatically fell in love with them. Having heard them live, this cd was amazing and the only reason anyone should have for not liking the cd is not having heard them live. if you get the chance you should go.
the bartender at the concert was saying that although he normally hated all the "hippie jam-bands" that came through, that this was the only one he liked and he liked them a whole lot at that.
Great Pick-Up.......2005-09-14
This album is fantastic. Not to mention this band rocks serious face!!! This as well as their first album have become staples in my everyday musical listening. The musicianship and on-stage chemistry is unparalleled by any current quartet. You can tell these are four classically trained musicians that apply their skills to song-writing and jamming that enhance and blend their sound in a unique way. If you like dancing at a live show or even by yourself in your living room, get this album!!!
Groove Perpetually, Perpetual Groove.......2005-08-29
Yes, I agree, you do have to see them live to REALLY appreciate them. However, I know people that have fallen in love with their sound alone. I saw them in Charlotte, NC in early 2003 at a tiny venue & they were one of the best bands I've seen live (& I've seen a lot)! These guys know real music & they can totally jam together! See them live & you will undoubtedly appreciate them. If you can't see them live, they may be an acquired taste.
Perpetual Yawn.......2005-07-01
I should have paid closer attention to bat hunters review since he gave it away when he said; "It took me listening to this disc about 5 times before I could really start enjoying it all the way through." Heck, I was lucky to make it all the way through the first time! This release is extremely repetitive and simplistic with lame lyrics and just plain bad singing. Now, if you enjoy bad singing with real musicianship, then I highly recommend The String Cheese Incident.
While I mean no offense to anyone, this band comes no where close to the direction of King Crimson or Pink Floyd.
As a former radio DJ who specialized in jazz/rock fusion and jam bands and appreciates great music and musicianship, I find this release has absolutely no sustenance to sink your teeth in to and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
With a name like Perpetual Groove, I expected a lot more. A jam band they are not.
