4 out of 5 stars A History Lesson Done The Metal Way!.......2006-12-09

Well if you like Grave Digger like I do?, you will enjoy this 3 cd box set. Each cd comes complete with it's own jacket and other goodies like lyrics, bonus tracks etc. The stories told within each disc are three different times in history that are very interesting times for mankind for sure. You get the Scottish uprising against the English, remember Braveheart? You get the story about the Templar Knights, basically the Christian right trying to protect the Cross at all cost and you get the story of the knights of the Round Table/Excalibur. So all in all they've picked some very good topics to put some form of metal to and it all works very well together. Is it just me or does metal music and history seem to belong together?

My personnal favorite cd's are 1 & 2 with disc 3 bringing up the rear. It's not because it isn't very good, because it is. However to me it just seems to be lacking the memorable riffage the first two disc's contain.

Anyway, it's heavy and melodic and it sounds great.

Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Hard History lesson from Germany.......2005-10-28

It may seem unlikly for a Metal band to write songs about historical (to some degree) events, more impresive is the fact that these guys wrote about death on their previous albums (The Reaper, Symphony of Death), but they did wrote not one but three theme albums!!.
This package contains the first 3 "theme" albums the band wrote (Tunes Of War 1996, Knights of the Cross 1998, Excalibur 1999) in their digipack version wich includes bonus tracks not featured in the original releases. It is also the last three albums guitar player Uwe Lulis participated in (he was later replaced by Manni Schmidt). The pure sound of power metal can be heard on all three albums, with the grasping vocals of Chris Boltendahl, the fast riffs of Uwe Lulis, the punding drums of Stefan Arnold, and each album with a distinctive sound!! (Track 11 Rebellion of the Tunes of War album for example featrues a bagpipe). Really a good choice if your'e into Metal.

4 out of 5 stars History Is Fun........With Grave Digger!.......2004-10-11

Power metal veterans Grave Digger may not be as well known as their brother bands, Helloween, Gamma Ray or Blind Guardian, but they've been around as long as Helloween, and even longer than Blind Guardian! This 3cd set is a great starting point for the curious listener. If you don't like what you hear on these discs then most likely you won't dig the Grave Digger. Some German power metal bands have a very distinct theme to their lyrics and image. Blind Guardian is mostly fantasy based and Gamma Ray is sci-fi, so on first impression you would think Grave Digger would be the horror based band of the bunch. Instead, these guys are history buffs. And I can tell you that listening to them is alot more fun than high school history class. How do they sound? Well, they're a power metal band. Maybe my ears aren't screwed on straight but Grave Digger seem to play alot more heavy and aggressive than most power metal bands. If you've got a friend(and I'm sure you do coz everybody has a friend like this) that thinks power metal is wimpy, try playing one of these three albums for him. They may not like it, but they'll have to re-evaluate their thinking. The only criticism you usually hear about this group is the vocals. These are not traditional power metal vocals here. They're very rough, moreso than Hansi's from Blind Guardian. They're not quite death metal growls, but he wouldn't have to try very hard to make them growls. Some folks can't get past these. Sure they do sound kinda goofy at times, and when he tries to sing high he sounds like a constipated Brian Johnson, but after repeated listens you realize that the vocals are a big part of what makes Grave Digger Grave Digger. At least for me anyway. Hell, you may never get used to the vocals. You just have to buy it and see, and for the price you can't go wrong coz all three are very good, very solid albums.

5 out of 5 stars History and heavy metal fans start drooling now!.......2004-09-22

If you are a big fan of medieval history as well as heavy metal, prepare to weep, because this special 3 CD edition contains the best of what Grave Digger can deliver. By far, the most impressive CD of the lot is the "Knights of the Cross". Full of memorable choruses and as well as a great history lesson through the ages starting from the creation of the Knights Templar to its untimely and ultimate demise.
"Excalibur" is another fine album, unfortunately, rather than being based on Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte De Arthur, it chose to reference John Boorman's 1981 film, "Excalibur" instead. Thus, a great portion was sung about Perceval at the end of the album. A quick check on the book, it was actually Sir Bors who survived the fateful war between Arhtur and Modred and he was the one who threw excalibur back to the lake, not Percival as the film had shown.
Nevertheless, these 3 albums are a fine addition to any metal fans collection. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Authentic Middle Age Music.......2004-06-04

I don't like the idea of box sets but I only get them when I have no other choice. This German Power Metal style is kind of new to me because I mostly listen to American metal bands and Europeian bands who look/sound American.
As for the albums, they weren't so bad except for Knights of the Cross. Tunes of War is the best of the set, and Excalibur is also good but it's only 70% stand out tracks, and Knights of the Cross as I said before was the worst album. But what about the bonus tracks. They were taken from the albums back in the 80's but why them? What's so special about them? It's quite simple. They re-did the 80's hit tracks (the origionals sound a lot different). Only Knights of the Cross had a cover version of Black Sabbaths' "Children of the Grave".
