Customer Reviews:
Solid Basic March Collection.......2006-08-07
Great solid basic collection, a real bargain with mostly outstanding performances. Having played several in bands and orchestras and sung one (the Rimsky Mlada), I have a good idea how they should go. As other other commentators say, there are better individual recordings, such as anything by Fennell and the Eastman band. The organ pieces just don't do this music justice, although a real cathedral organ can come close, but that's beyond these discs. The Nielsen Aladdin March is the new one for me. Berlioz by Solti is great! Buy it!
Bold and brassy mixes well with the rest.......2004-08-14
I am impressed most by the variety in 40 Famous Marches on 2 CDs, a Double Decca release. The performers include Philharmonic Orchestras, a Brass Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, organ, Symphony, and for nine selections, the Wiener Philharmoniker. I am not sure if the word schmaltzy ought to be applied to any of this, but the Wiener Philharmoniker often exhibits a unique sound which is not quite the same as any of the other selections. The final five selections are all performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble under Elgar Howarth in ADD/DDD format in 1983 and 1985. Two of those five are rousing marches by John Philip Sousa, another called `Entry of the Gladiators' is typical of songs played by live bands at circuses, and the remaining two are from movie soundtracks. `Colonel Bogey' is famous from the movie about British prisoners of war building a railroad bridge for the Japanese in World War Two, the Bridge over the River Kwai.
The major source of variety in these 40 selections is that many of them are taken from operas and even a ballet, Tchaikovsky's famous `The Nutcracker--March.' I originally found this collection when I was searching for `Funeral March of a Marionette' by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) which has a theme that is famous from its use by a television series hosted by Alfred Hitchcock. If you can't remember how that goes, you ought to buy this collection and listen for it early: it is selection 4 on the first CD. The main theme was fun to play and easy to learn in a book of piano lessons, but the rest is quite whimsical and worth listening to, and people who play organ with pedal notes might still be able to find music for playing the entire arrangement, difficult though it is for someone like me, who becomes confused when too many things are going on at the same time.
There was something on this CD that sounded weird, and I had to check to see what it was, and it was just someone playing the organ, but he was trying to play `The Ruins of Athens -- Turkish March' by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
Something by Handel sounds so much like the beginning of a movie that I expect someone to start singing, `The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music,' but this CD is something else. The first CD starts and ends with marches from `Pomp and Circumstance' by Edward Elgar, so people who have been to a lot of graduation ceremonies will be expecting plenty of familiar music. The 6:32 time is slightly longer than the Wagner's `Tannhauser -- Grand March' on the first CD, but long graduation ceremonies may play it even longer, until all the diplomas are handed out.
Verdi, Strauss, Schubert, Prokofiev, Berlioz, these famous composers might be recognized by people who know music, but the `Wedding March' by Felix Mendelssohn is famous with everybody for what it is used for. If you haven't heard it lately, maybe you should hear it a few times so you won't be so nervous the next time it comes around.
40 Famous Marches - a great collection!!.......2003-11-21
This is a wonderful collection. What a wide collection of exciting pieces, all in one affordable package!! It encompasses so many composers and styles, from the majesty of Elgar and Walton, to upbeat Sousa to schmaltzy Strauss. It also includes such classic marches as Meyerbeer's Coronation, a pinnacle of the French opera style, the timeless Wedding March of Mendelssohn, and the brilliant organ piece, Marche Triomphale of Sigfrid Karg-Elert. There are also some interesting oddball selections like the mysterious Things to Come of Bliss (composed for the H.G. Wells film), the jaunty Chabrier marche, and oriental flair of Nielsen's Aladdin.
In reading some of the other criticisms, it is true that the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble perhaps is not the best or most noted ensemble. However, overall, the pieces they play are either Sousa or patriotic-sounding tunes. Their only forays into the true classical realm are the Grand Marches from Tannhauser and Aida, and they are not half bad. So don't let those pieces keep you from buying the CD - 1) because most of the songs they do play are great and 2) they only play in 1/4 of the music....
Classics on Parade.......2003-05-01
If you're looking for a collection of marches from classical music, this would be a fine one to get.
It contains recordings made from 1958 to 1996 by some of the world's great orchestras, plus several numbers by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and four arranged for organ.
The first 35 marches include many of the best-known classical marches, plus three "coronation" marches, written as far back as the end of the seventeenth century (The Prince of Denmark's March) up to 1954 (The Dam Busters). The last five pieces are "popular" marches played by the Jones Ensemble.
The liner notes give a nice history of marches, including where most of the ones in this collection fit into that scenario.
A great collection of marches by classical and popular music "masters".
Too, too much Philip Jones Ensemble.......2003-04-17
A mixed bag of music, 40 FAMOUS MARCHES compiles a good many marches - some not too common.
The CD has it's high points:
1. Chicago Symphony (under Solti!) playing Berlioz's Hungarian March (love that trombone excerpt - BAM!)
2. London Philharmonic playing Prokofiev's "The Love for Three Oranges" March
3. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (also London Philharmonic)
BUT... There's some real stuff on here, too. I must concur with a prior reviewer: FAR TOO MUCH Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Case in point - Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, as played by PJBE is completely devoid of the energy and fire it needs. The trombone countermelody at the end is just NOT THERE (you'll strain to hear it). There's just no way this is right. PBJE is great in their setting, but this is just not it.
Overall, this CD might be a good compilation for the novice listener, but I would recommend the more experienced (or trombonists, like myself) purchase works by individual symphonies that include the music you desire - a more expensive, yet more expressive alternative.

NOT WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN.......2007-01-20
DEAD PREZ & OUTLAWZ PRESENTS:
CAN'T SELL DOPE FOREVER
It took the longest time but finally two of the greatest groups in rap history have come together to record an album. Dead Prez have always been known for their political and cultural views, as were the Outlawz are most likely remembered for their diss tracks recorded with mentor 2pac, they as well have always voice their opinions and views on the same topics Dead Prez are famous for.
1.INTRO-just a guy with a screwed voice saying the name of the cd
2.1 NATION-after a sample of a guy talking about gang violence a nice beat from STIC.MAN blesses your ears, and you are immediately hyped about this release. Then the Outlawz, Dead Prez, and STORMEY all start spitting about how everybody in the ghetto should come together and stop killing each other. This is a strong start to the album.4.5/5
3.CAN'T SELL DOPE FOREVER-next up is the title track, and this one isn't as strong as the first song on the cd. But this song is a good track, and has some of the best lyrics on the album as the Laws, Stic.Man, and Stormey each trade verses. EDI comes threw with the production on this track.4/5
4.LIKE A WINDOW-Stic.Man comes very nice on this track with an excellent beat, the beat is very reflective sounding. Plus Stic comes nice on the verses with a song about his brother, and ghetto life, plus the hook is very nice. This is one of the best songs on the entire album.5/5
5.SURRONDINGS-a quick interlude
6.THUGGIN ON THE BLOCKKK-the exact line up on verses and production from track 3 return with an even better outing. All of the verses are on point and the hook by EDI is real nice. Plus the beat from EDI is perfect for night riding. This is a nice track that even the casual listener will enjoy.4.5/5
7.U AIN'T THE ONLY 1-next up we come to a track featuring M1 only from Dead Prez who also produces this track. In fact his beat is very reflective, and the perfect backdrop him and MESSY MARV. This track is about not feeling sorry for your self because every body has problems not just you, so you can find help and people who can relate to you.4.5/5
8.SEARCHIN-CHUCK P, AND EDDIE COLDFINGERS drop and excellent instrumental, and fits the concept of the song perfectly. Stormey and SCOTT LO do an excellent job on this song, and ERICA sounds great on the hook.5/5
9.DEDICATION-interlude
10.FORK IN THE ROAD-this is the absolute best song on the entire album. EDI did an extremely good job with the production on this track, with the guitar in the beat and the samples of PAC in the song. Also MALACHI does a great job on the chorus with some excellent vocals. The Outlawz and Stormey lay some great verses, which only contributes to the greatness of this song, I wish there would have been a video for this song.5/5
11.BELIEVE-Stic.Man returns to drop verses, the hook, and provides the electric bouncy instrumental. This is another great song that all people should enjoy, as it is an influential song. Plus Stic's mother sings at the end.4.5/5
12.WRBG-interlude
13.HOLDIN ON-the Outlawz return along side CHAE, and Stormey spitting over a Stic.Man production. This song echo's the sentiments pronounced on the last track, and number 7. The hook on this one is nice to.4.5/5
14.CAME UP-Outlawz, Dead Prez, and BONE THUGS come threw on this one as one of each group comes threw. YOUNG NOBLE kicks it off with a nice verse, followed by a verse from Stic.Man, and lastly is LAYZIE BONE stealing the show as he sounds the most natural over TAI ROTAN's eerie instrumental. The hook from all three is nice, especially the last part of the song.4/5
Over all this was a nice release from these two influential groups, though obviously it wasn't what it should have been.
"aint no pimps retirin', aint no prostitutes vacationing on the islands".......2006-12-02
"Cant Sell Dope Forever" is a great concept for an album. The material is at times more inspiring than others but never the less it maintains a constant inspirational feel throughout the album. Standout tracks such as the singles "1nation", "Believe" and "Fork In The Road" are all very good songs. "Plan, Plot, Strategize" is the constant saying on the album, as is making the right choices, being healthy, ending gang violence, quit selling drugs and other social issues. Basically the message from the album is we need to stop killing each other over material objects, rise up and and establish a true people's government (a REAL republic in fact and not one on paper like now) where the people are equal and have their basic needs met (food, clothes, shelter). In other words its socialism on wax but played down so the audience that it appeals to is much larger (again dead prez' sound has changed, but message stays the same). The Outlawz hold their own with lyrics, Lazy Bone from Bone Thugs-n-Harmony appears on "Came-Up" and Dead Prez as always brings the ill lyrics. Production is decent, nothing complex but nothing simple, this isnt the RBG sound, its something new and as long as it took for me to like the RBG sound after Let's Get Free when I had first heard this album and the single "1nation" I instantly liked it.
[...] for the videos from the singles.
ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE, FREE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS!
One to Grow on............2006-09-23
Real quick and to the point this is average at best. I am a Dead Prez and Outlaw fan, but this seems rushed. I know they could have done better than this. M1 from Dead Prez is not on most of the album and Kastro from Outlawz is not to present either. They put a song on here from Get Free or Die Tryin'(maybe for those who did not hear it) and that kind of bothered me.
I know it's a mix cd and not an official album but still they could have done better. I can't lie it has grown on me a little more now, cause when I first got it I was like this is whack. Hardcore fans should get it, if you are new to both groups get something else, this is a bad representation of them.
this is not an actual review.......2006-09-22
I'm just saying that Fork in the Road is the best song on the cd and that there is more Outlawz than Dead Prez flavor on the album. I bought it right when it came out and I am generally pleased with it though it sometimes becomes a little too "street" for my taste. A solid effort for hip hop in a year that is just dismay for us fans.
Better than most but one problem for me...............2006-08-23
Not bad. Definitely better than the mainstream stuff out there. There's one thing that bothers me though. I like the can't sell dope forever basic premise of the album but the hip hop community still can't seem to shake the victim mentality. Just when the take responsibility for your actions message is about to be driven home there's still a hint of I'm being oppressed or held down and the only way I can keep up or get ahead is selling dope or some other hustle. This is evident as far back as Ice Cube's "Us" on the Death Certificate album and also Brand Nubian's "Just Don't Learn". All have a nice take a look at yourself and your actions message but all still contain that racial conspiracy theory slant to it. Like part of a lyric on this album mentions "we don't own no planes, we don't own no boats" referring to the drug trade. No we don't own the planes or the boats but we damn sure own the Escalades with 20+ inch spinners and DVD players which by the way cost more than most of the single engine planes or the boats that bring the stuff here. Nobody has a gun to anyone's head making them stand on that corner.
Don't get me wrong, It's not like I don't think prejudice, bigotry and racism doesn't still exist. It does and always will. It's just an ugly side of our human nature but it can't continue to be an excuse for an entire segment of the population not to achieve some level of success. The harsh truth is that poverty is a state of mind and there's always another way out other than slangin'. Bill Cosby is hitting the nail on the head with his comments lately. I like the conscious lyrics in this album but I just wish we could let go of this I can't achieve because "somebody" won't let me excuse, It's the 21st century people. Too many other people have done it, you can too. It's all about choices. Anyway I much rather this than the usual ignorant thuggin', pimpin', slangin' crap you hear all day on the radio. Keep it up Dead Prez I'll keep listening.
P.S. This is from a 33 year old brotha who has been around long enough to see hip hop go from Sugar Hill Gang to Eric B & Rakim to (God help us) Lil' John.

Customer Reviews:
Something very precious.......2004-11-16
John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness
Great historical resource.......2000-08-24
This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.
However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

Album Description
Dead forever., the legendary 1972 debut by Buffalo was the first to be released outside the UK on the prestigious Vertigo label. It remains one of the first . truly sinister albums from an Aussie band of the day. Highlights of this collection of heavy psychedelic blues included covers of Free's 'I'm a Mover' and the Blues Images' 'Pay My Dues' plus the band-penned tracks 'Leader', 'Suzie Sunshine', 'Bean Stew' and the melancholy, atmospheric ballad 'Forest Rain'. The album's centrepiece is the awe-inspiring title track; 'Dead Forever' - its dense, heavy riffing, multi-tracked solos, throbbing basslines, rasping vocals and a weird echoed sound to the drums created the 'definitive' Buffalo sound that would be fully unleashed on their ubsequent classics Volcanic Rock and Only Want You For Your Body. The line-up for this album was: Dave Tice (vocals - later vocalist for UK R&B band The Count Bishops), Alan Milano (vocals), Paul Babli (drums), Peter Wells (bass - later guitarist for Rose Tattoo) and John Baxter (guitar). The 3rd. release in Aztec Music's reissue of all 5 Buffalo titles, dead forever. features 5 bonus tracks (2 by pre Buffalo band Head), new digital remaster, 24 page booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Ian McFarlane - packaged in a 6 panel digi-pak.

Customer Reviews:
VILE ROCKS.......2001-07-30
THIS CD IS PRETTY COOL EXCEPT FOR THE MONSTER VOCALS ON MOST OF THE SONGS. I THINK THE KEY BAND IS VILE--AMAZING VERION OF (LOVE ME LIKE A REPTILE)-- ABSOLOUTLY INGENIUS,THUMBS UP HERE!!!
Dead forever? These bands YES, ---Motorhead NO!.......1999-05-03
Possibly the worst cd I ever purchased. I've been a Motorheadbanger since 1981, and I've never heard such a disgusting "tribute" in my life! Some songs don't even have lead guitar! Most songs are for the fans of bands like Death or Boltthrower, but not Motorhead. The only song which I can stand to listen to is Stay Clean, which is done nicely, by a band called Tyrant. Lyrics on the other songs are impossible to make out, imatating the sounds of a barking dog or even a murder being committed. Very little talent, if any, is shown on this cd. Real Motorhead fans, SAVE YOUR MONEY! This cd "tribute" shows NO CLASS!
Classic Motorhead with the new Metal edge!.......1999-02-24
A great compilation of classic Motorhead cuts with some really awesome unsigned bands! Hostile Intent's version of " Ace of Spades " blew my ears away! A great combo of undiscovered talent! A must for Motorhead and Metal fans!
